100 year old vegetarian eatery in melukote, temple town, mandya district, pandavapura taluk, iyengar food, iyengar cuisine, brahmin cuisine, puliyogare, sakkarai pongal, bela pongal, sambar, rasam, banana leaf lunch, traditional meal, karnataka
Located around 150 kilometres from Bengaluru, the temple town of Melukote is home to culinary traditions that have evolved over centuries. Many say that quintessential Iyengar delicacies such as the sakkarai pongal, bela pongal and puliyogare trace their roots to this sacred town where one modest eatery, Subbanna Mess, has been serving traditional Melukote cuisine for nearly a century to pilgrims who journey here. In this episode, I explore the making of the puliyogare gojju, savour a delicious lunch and meet the family behind this eatery who state rather humbly, that they are merely preserving the culinary customs handed down by the generations that came before them.
Hope you enjoy this watch. Stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

    Rs. 100 (usd 1.3)
8.5/10 (10/10 for the bella pongal, sakkarai pongal and puliyogare)

I am indebted to you Kripal. Almost ten years back I was in Melukote, and I was staying in a government Inspection bungalow. Lunch was arranged at the bungalow and take away food was served. I was not expecting anything special. But the food surprised me. To say I was blown away by the taste of the food is understatement. I am now more than convinced I was served food from this mess. I kept trying to find out the place and had given up. But as soon as I read the title of the episode, I was smiling from ear to ear.

Omg, this simple food and the way the owner has maintained the simplicity of the centuries and yet comes out with the most delicious dishes, my mouth’s watering!! Learned a few things watching this. Kripal the fact that you have warmed up to the local lingo and Kannada! Lovely! This shows that we dont need to add onion garlic for every dish, which is the case with most restaurants today. Keep up the tours of places like this!!

While going through a book Poison for Breakfast by Lemony Snicket, a thought passed my mind how we have gone into a self- destruct mode by adopting fusion foods, foreign cereals etc abandoning our age old healthy traditional foods. I am not against momo or street food culture but the way we are fast losing our traditional food culture is something food vloggers and foodies must act quickly and restore our food traditions. Corn flakes ,oats or breads etc are not equal to idlis, upma or parathas. Kudos to you for trying to review and revive our Indian food culture so passionately and lovingly that should make everyone realise how we are fast losing our traditional foods to imported culture. Request you to keep sharing and showing more traditional foods for our future generations.
    🙏🙏🙏🙏😷😷😷🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍

    Kripalji,,
Me and my wife Sudharani visited Melkote a couple of times for the Darshan of Sri Cheluvanarayana and Yoganarasimha. Accidentally we had food at Subbanna Mess. Even today we can remember the extraordinarily beautiful(Cheluva) main diety and the Yoganarasimha. And ofcourse the traditional food of Subbanna Mess and in particularly the Pulihora and Chakkara Pongal.
The rice is called Bangaru(gold) Theegalu(wires).
    Thanks 😊 a ton sir.

I just picked up Puliyogere gravy from their Malleswaram outlet. 250 gms cost 140. The disturbing fact is there is no name of manufacturer, DoP and UB and MRP.. Just a sticker of the shop mentioning the rate. The sales persons have no idea of the product and they suggest to keep in fridge for longer use. None of the products sold at this outlet has the above details. Please follow the government procedure as it's come under FSSAI. Because you are more than 100 years old, you cannot ignore the rules as it's food item and has shelf life.

Simple, strong, (healthy too in some sense), homely food needs to be preserved and presented to our people to showcase the grand history we have had as a community since times immemorial🙏🙏.

Mel - kote - During Ramanujacharya's times this part of Karnataka was known as mel-nadu or a " superior place". It became attached to "Kote" since this place protected him like a fort when he was in danger. So there is no real fort here nor was one there earlier

    Dear sir
Please correct me if im wrong
The culinary establishments and street food vendors (which ever place it may be ) which have been running successfully since decades are encyclopedia for knowledge on business and economics .These have seen everything.
Losses ,profits, hardships, resource management , personal losses, knowledge transfer from one gen to another , expectations from customers demand and supply , calamities ,competition, work load management, preserving traditional foods and whatnot. They stand as centres for real time knowledge. These ppl are neither reputed economists nor business experts. Yet they have succeeded. Why ? How?
I strongly think that all IIMs and business schools in india should include special courses in their curriculums for all the students about them.. Either these people should be asked for special lectures in reputed business schools or some kind of workshops should be conducted for students.
We gain immense knowledge from them

The Pongal described so beautifully. I love to hear you describe all the dishes.
Sometimes,u don't translate the entire regional conversation. Also earlier it would be all out non veg eateries. Good to hear and see that u are covering veg delicacies of so many regions

Dear Kripal & FL TV - The Subbanna Mess has well and truly carried on the ancestors legacy !! I certainly opine that this was one of your best Puliyogare rice + the sakarai and the decadent Vella Pongal . Kudos to Mr Sankarnarayan to explain about the history of the mess I detail and also was candid in showing the preparation of his dishes !! It’s HAPPY EATING for sure ! Today for lunch we have Bisibele Ba’ath and some spicy mixture ! Thanks once again for this wonderful Vlog ! Much love to and all ! HAPPY DIWALI ❤️❤️❤️🌟🌟🌟🪔🪔🪔🪔🪔

Sakkara pongal is mentioned in the devotional poetry of the Alwars (of Vaishnavism) couple of centuries before Melkote was built!

    • @Rajesh_Mukundan
      @Rajesh_Mukundan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Not sakara pongal. Azhwars talked about akkaradisal.. or ksheera-anna... Sakara pongal is a modified dish that came many centuries later.
