"purethink" is a reference to 1984. Because Jowling Kowling cycles between the same 3 literary references to make herself sound well-read. In 1984, they have "doublethink", where the state propaganda machine is so powerful that it can cause its audience to accept two contradictory beliefs as truth simultaneously. So "purethink" is an allusion to both "nooo my free speech I'm telling George Orwell on you" and also "purity politics cancel culture nooo my free speech". So, pretty weird that she would invoke those completely good-faith talking points to instigate a dogpile on Jessie for freely speeching a fact (or an opinion, or advocacy for a boycott, or insert your personal interpretation of Jessie's tweet here). It's almost like these people aren't talking from a place of logic and reason, but merely using the aesthetic of reason as a cypher for their coded hate speech...

In one response, Rowling refers to Jessie as "sonny". Now, let's not forget that Rowling has claimed, many times, to support trans people and have trans friends. Yet in that comment she deliberately misgendered Jessie, fully knowing that is offensive and the potential for harm that has. Rowling herself has boasted that the money coming in funds her campaigns, so there is no way I can separate the person from their work. It is a matter of personal pride to me that she has never had one penny of my money, and she never shall. After six years of debating, on 22 December the devolved Scottish Parliament passed the Gender Recognition Reform Act, paving the way for gender Self-ID in Scotland. So yes, that was a lovely early Christmas present. However, the six years we have been waiting have led to a huge upsurge in extremely toxic transphobia, which Rowling has played no small part in fuelling. It gives me the greatest comfort however that she must be fuming at the Act being passed. I'll take it the comment about dogs was meant to be tongue in cheek, and a lame attempt at humour. If it was, I for one am not laughing at what could be considered advocating animal cruelty. And if you read this, Joanne, when you have Jordan Peterson supporting you, that alone should tell you that you have big problems.

I think its also worth noting that J.K. Rowling had no direct involvement in the video game, but that it was created by a whole team of creative people who worked their asses off for years to make this game, and that most of them are not transphobic. (especially since they worked in a way to make your character trans)
Problem is, it's still her IP in the end, so the money will still come to her. That's where people are conflicted on this: Hogwarts Legacy is the product of a whole bunch of creative people in a stressful, underpaid, overworked field, who don't necessarily support her views, but at the same time, the franchise belongs to Rowling. So therefore, she'll likely get the lion's share of the money, while those poor artists and programmers will get pennies compared to that.

Great video as always! Just one small thing to point out. The production for game in question, Hogwarts Legacy, has publicly stated that JKR has no *direct* involvement with creation, story, and production of the game. It’s also on the game’s FAQ. HOWEVER, with that being said, you are still correct that JKR’s still indirectly benefiting from the game. She can and HAS been using it as cannon fodder for validation of her ideas. Someone Tweeted her asking something along the lines of “How do you sleep at night knowing you’re hurting people with your views?” And she cheekily responded by basically saying, “I just look back at my royalty cheques and move on sleeping soundly”. It’s extremely upsetting. Like, JKR is not only hurting Trans folks with her Tweets. She is signal boosting and validating far-right pundits and activists who are not only transphobic, but are literally part of groups that actively fight for policies to overturn Marriage Equality and are anti-abortion. The TH-camr, Shaun has made an excellent video on this called “JK Rowling’s New Friends”. As a Cis, Gay man, I’m hurt by this. I’m an avid gamer. The game looks absolutely marvelous, but seeing as how JKR is using it as publicity to validate herself and hurt people a part of my community, I can’t support the game as is right now. I’m making the tough decision to skip it for now. I’m standing with my community. I’ll likely wait for a month or two and will get it used if I’m so inclined.
I sometimes think JK must have had some sort of a mental breakdown to turn into the monster she is - it's hard to believe the HP series could have come from the pen of someone like her 2022 version. It takes an especially cruel person to attack the emphatic, intelligent and kind person like Jessie.
Shaun has a pretty good vid breaking down how HP's ethics was pretty garbage and presaged what we're seeing from JKR now. Worth a watch, if you haven't seen it
Preach. I get looking fondly on something you loved as a kid, but the books have so many issues with world building, plot, and characterization. There are plenty of other series, many involving magic and fantasy elements, that actually strive to say something and say it well.
Funny kinda feminist that writes under the name of Robert Galbraith. You’d think it bad enough that female authors already have it hard, but instead of raising the issue and writing under a female pseudonym she chose a male one instead. Just saying she uses a male alter ego but attacks people for living in their real body it’s hypocritical.
It’s so frustrating being someone who is currently hyper fixated on Harry Potter but also like hating her absolute bullshit views. Like god I love Harry Potter and the games because I’m so trapped in the fandom right now that I’m mad at myself for liking it. :(
If it's any consolation, JKR is probably is so rich at this point that a group of people not buying her stuff doesn't make a difference (despite how butthurt she seemed in the tweets in this video). I mean not buying her books or something else she worked more directly on makes sense, but I don't think she gets a large portion of money for this game, Hogwart Legacy probably had a huge team of artists, writers, programmers etc behind it. Just to be clear, I don't support JKR in the slightest, what she says is awful and I'm not even a Harry Potter fan, but at some point not buying something you like hurts you without really affecting the person behind it. Besides, most of the things we buy like clothes, food, phones are not ethically made or made by some horrible people since being ethical doesn't bring enough profit for the greedy companies, so is something like the Harry Potter franchise any worse than buying stuff made in sweatshops? Everyone can feel differently about it, this is just my opinion on it.
Yep, I maintain that JK doesn't understand the incredible world she made. She's gone anonymous to hp fan sites and been laughed out. The story she wrote is all about inclusivity and respecting changes and differences in everyone.😅 Think about Hermione shrinking their teeth they were insecure about, or Tonks making regular changes to their face, or the acceptance of Remus, or of animagi (wizards turning into animals). True no one uses magic to transition in the books, but the idea wizarding society is pro furry and body modification and the whole wizarding world draws the line at trans gender is an insane conclusion.😅
Yar, matey, she'll not get one doubloon from me, but if I want to play the game, I'll sail me ship into the bay and download it, then she can walk the plank and be consumed by the briney deep! My parrot does not like her.
Also I really want to know her (JK Rowling) opinion about the Hogwards Legacy character creator. Your character can literally be trans. You pick your gender (witch/wizzard) based on dorms, it's not connected to voice or appearance at all. It's very weird that the HP game has the most inclusive character creator ever.
Also as someone who lives in the UK (recently moved). I sometimes feel like even if the whole world would stop supporting her, the UK alone would make up for most sales. It's impossible to avoid it here. I've seen the weirdest Harry Potter items. It's mental.
Ended up here due to searching up the Hogwarts Legacy Drama, all these people did got me support Rowling. Originally I was buying the game for my sis, since she loves Harry Potter. Yesterday I went to GameStop to check its released, I was attacked by a blue haired loser just for this damn drama. (My Buddy Jeff recorded it) To spite this guy not only I bought the game, I bought the delux edition.
The issue is that 1) she still profits from it, and 2) Rowling has written posts specifically using the ongoing success of the HP franchise as proof that society agrees with her anti-trans statements. She may not have been directly involved in the game's development, but anything HP related is still strongly tied to her name, and that's not likely to change anytime soon.
Also, they still have (at least one) big named right-wing conservative working hand in hand with the development of the game (as well as the game itself kind of being Antisemitism: The Game)- it's not just JKR's transphobia that's the hurtful thing here. It's gotten to the point where it's the series material itself. (IMO, the developers saying that "JKR had no contribution with the game" is just a shoehorn excuse to get people who "Don't support her, but-" to buy into the game)
@@trashcat4886 Yeah, the older I get the more I notice problematic symbolism all throughout the HP series (and I'm no spring chicken...). It already has a bunch of preorders, and most TH-cam vids on Hogwarts Legacy don't even mention the controversy with Rowling. Frankly the way many transgender activist channels are covering this game makes them come off like they spend a huge amount of time in insular online spaces, something Vaush talked about. A lot of people round here would be surprised how many normies like the harry potter franchise and dont even know Rowlings political positions,. Please try to remember next month, that the vast majority of people buying the game are doing it because they love the Wizarding World, not JKs personal beliefs. I'm genuinely concerned a lot of well meaning trans activists are gonna hurt the cause by making enemies of average apolitical joe and janes who just want to play the game, giving the right ammo,
As much as I like Harry Potter, no one should be using the author or her books as a reason to hate others, especially in the way that some of the commenters on her post have.
I’m just hoping that the Scottish government’s recent passing of the Gender Recognition Act that made it easier for people to legally change the gender marker on legal documents, will annoy JK enough for her to leave the country so we can be rid of her.
I honestly really wanted to buy it to support the artists behind it, because it looks gorgeous, but if she keeps doing this I'm gonna end up pirating it. (I still want to support the artists, as an aspiring game artist this looks phenomenal and really inspired (not talking about the story) but not sure how to do so given, yknow, JK).
Yeah the world is not as easy as just black or white, it's hard. If I didn't get anything from any artists/companies I didn't agree with on stuff minor or major I would have like nothing to enjoy. I hear the lead dev is a dumbass too or something but the rest of the people seem chill. I mean there is obviously a point when it's pretty much a singular person and they do crap like JKR but I do not really get mad if they buy stuff, if they don't agree with her. HP is all she has anymore everything else has failed, she knows it. So that is kinda' funny in a sense.
I want the deluxe edition because of the extra cosmetics, but I'm conflicted. And I'd love to pirate, but I literally know nothing about it, how would I even do that?
@@fredericksaxton9782 I understand that. If I do decide to purchase it I'll likely preorder for the black hippogriff, because at that point... why wouldn't I, yknow? As for pirating, my only experience is with the Sims. It's all about finding a reputable person who won't give you malware, but I assume it's different for every game. If you really want to play but don't mind waiting, I assume the unpopularity of JK will make finding a pirated download easier since it'll be "in demand" of sorts.
A few things about the game: - Hogwarts legacy is incredibly antisemitic and racist. The villains being the goblin bankers which are a well known antisemitic depiction of jewish people, who team up WITH dark wizards, who are based off NAZIS, because they realised the goblins were too sympathetic as villains. So basically the aim of the game is to stop a goblin rebellion, and prevent them from having CIVIL RIGHTS, like owning a wand. (I wish I was joking). - Jk Rowling is profiting off the game. Even though Warner bros stated that “JK Rowling is not directly involved in the game”, she owns the Harry Potter IP, so she will still have royalties from the game. - You can play a transgender character, meaning JK Rowling has no creative input. (But does this matter?) This is most likely due to Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software wanting to clarify that Rowling has no real substantial creative input in the development of the game. But just because she has no creative input and they have decided to actively disagree with her transphobic views, doesn’t mean she isn’t earning money from this game. So to summarise JK Rowling is profiting off the game, even though the game creators themselves tried to separate her from their work, by giving her no creative input. Although even though they tried (emphasis on 'tried') to do the right thing, the game is also heavily racist in its storyline and themes, which is also problematic. The game itself is problematic and racist, and adding trans characters won’t change the fact the JK Rowling is profiting off the game. It’s important to be informed of these things so you can separate JK Rowling and the problematic elements of Hogwarts Legacy. Not gonna lie, really wanted to get the game, still do, but I’m trying my darn best not too.
Don't forget about John Levitt being the Lead Designer while having smash TH-cam hits like "The injustice of social justice" and "In praise of cultural appropriation"! Avalanche saying that JKR didn't have any creative input on the game is just The Great Oz behind a curtain, because they gave her creative freedom to other bigots. It's still just as shitty and outright harmful, but obviously no one supports JKR, so that makes the bullet wound go away with a bandaid, right?
This is ridiculous, the gas lighting and ignorance by some people in this community is amazing. I love Harry Potter and I think the video game is amazing. If you think it's okay to bully people for playing a video game then you can kiss my rear end. Make common sense common again
JK Rowling holds a perfectly reasonable and majority view. She is not anti Trans, she is pro women, of the biological variety. She's pretty much as liberal as people come.
wait until jk rowling finds out about the marauders fandom and how we have literally used her fictional characters to create extremely gay stories and we headcanon so many of her characters ad trans 😭
JK Rowling hasn't said one thing hateful to trans people in her life. Jessies take on her was completely disingenous. But then again this dude or Jessie call anyone who doesn't bow to their bonkers gender religion beliefs transphobic.
The wealth of evidence against your argument, that lives on the internet forever, disagrees with you. Gender is also not a religion, it’s an entirely separate construct. The fact that you clearly don’t understand that speaks volumes about how the education system failed you
When Americans call drag queens inherently sexual, I wonder what they think of us Brits and our yearly tradition of Pantomime? There's always at least one bloke in over-the-top drag? And Peter Pan is always played by a woman. I think it's a holdover from back when women weren't allowed to be on stage (?) and all the parts in plays (like Shakespear) were played by men? IDK, don't quote me on that.
I know that when the Peter Pan stage musical was initially created, they cast petite, sprightly women as Peter because they more easily captured the look of a child-like, youthful, agile figure while still being able to carry being the lead role in a way that an actually young actor couldn't. Also, of course, a woman's lighter voice would sound more like the perpetually youthful Peter Pan than a male actor's voice. So it's possible that this came from similar mindsets?

The fact that the game devs have actively gone out of their way to be trans inclusive is what saddens me the most. They clearly don't support JK or anything that she says, they've even gone out of their way to clarify that JK has absolutely no involvement with the game itself, yet JK's continued bullshit makes it impossible for the game to be judged fairly, and it sucks too because it looks astoundingly well made TLDR: The game devs are anti-JK, but are still mandated to work on a Harry Potter game, and include things that would make JK throw a hissy fit
It's so obvious these people see attacking the trans movement as a game. They've stopped applying any nuance to the situation. They've started taking an ends justify the means mentality, even about extremely serious topics, even when they have no reason to be so sure of themselves. Like seriously? You'll throw around the word pedophile like it's nothing, that's a huge fucking accusation to have no evidence for. And they believe it so strongly that some of them will show no remorse for trans people being _shot_ because they think 'it's okay, that groomer had it coming'. Excuse me? God I'm so tired of this now
I hope you have a good new years, Samantha! You deal with so much hate and transphobia, I don't even know how you deal with it without being angry at the world. You're stronger than I could even imagine❤️❤️ 😘
Harry Potter was a safe space for me as a kid. When I couldn't get along with my peers and couldn't handle real life, I'd escape to Hogwarts. I can't express how much that world and those characters meant to me as a kid. I played a few of the games back in the day, but they were never what I really wanted out of a Harry Potter game. It's looking like this game is going to be exactly the Harry Potter game I dreamed of as a kid, and I'm pissed that Rowling has ruined it. I'm still shocked and horrified at who she has turned out to be and the fact she continues to actively harm the trans community. I wanted to be a "famous author" for most of my childhood, and Rowling was my hero. I can't completely abandon Harry Potter after everything it meant to me as a kid, but I will not buy anything new that would give her more money. Honestly even reading the books now leaves an added bitter taste. I just don't understand how she could dig her heels in so deep to die on this hill when she's only hurting people. How can she not see it? How is she so blind to the thousands -- maybe hundreds of thousands -- of fans she has hurt? She doesn't care. She doesn't care about the people whose lives she touched with her series. She doesn't care about the art she created. She only cares about the money, fame, and power it has given her. She is now just another reminder to never idolize celebrities because they will inevitably disappoint. Part of me hopes she'll see it some day and will change, but I don’t really think it'll happen. She just keeps getting worse, and at this point I wish she'd just go away into the obscurity that she deserves.
@@ryanthomas9306 I don't hate Harry Potter. It just has a sad edge to it now because of Rowling, and I won't give her any more money by buying anything new. I'm sure the game itself will be fun, and I'd have liked to play it, but not if it means supporting Rowling after all the harm she has done.

Oh hey is the new game the one where the villains are goblins? Specially the HP universe goblins that have been widely criticized for their antisemitic portrayal? I remember hearing some people talking about it when the trailer first dropped. Apparently the main story follows a literal goblin hunter who is trying to squash a goblin uprising. So yeah, while her vocal distaste for trans people is more blatant, I do think it's important to highlight the way she has dismissed the concerns of these antisemitic portrayals in the past as well when talking ab the game.
(Also correct me if I'm wrong, it may have been a different HP game in production.)
Yeah. I also heard people say a lot of the story bits from the trailer borrow an unconfortable similarity with blood libel narratives.

@@larabee688 Honestly though!

I love JK Rowling and she is right about trans !

A few things about the game:
- Hogwarts legacy is incredibly antisemitic and racist.
(But does this matter?)
This is most likely due to Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software wanting to clarify that Rowling has no real substantial creative input in the development of the game.

Purethink is the organization leading the game
Jkr is saying this game has nothing to do with me so to condemn it is idiocracy
Purethink isn’t related to trans ideology
Imagine thinking everything is about you
That’s called narcissism
A lot of awful people created wonderful things
JKR said nothing wrong. She's 100% right and is awesome. Delusional people playing dress up can be mad all they want.
No transgender woman is playing dress up you ignorant Malaka.

I loved the Potter movie’s but I’m not buying anything from Potter ever again, Even if my copies were damaged I wouldn’t replace them (or at least buy used so JK doesn’t get cent” Lucky everything after the original movies was bad.
Who cares the games amazing
Honestly yeah it look nice
People get your brains straight, its Her right (J.K Rowling) to say what she thinks, respect that for F. Off.
Some people believe in god some don’t. Some believe in trans some don’t. Why can’t we just respect people’s beliefs
I believe in being good, and anyone who pushed religion on others are complete wackos
But doesn’t that mean people pushing trans beliefs on me are also such wackos ?
To me yes. Some religious people are good, most trans people are good, but the religious fucks that come to my house and judge people are bad
That horseshit about 'Respecting beliefs' crosses a line when your belief is that my community and I should die. This perpetuates the myth of tolerable intolerance. Piss off. I can look in a mirror and see I am real. I can look at my friends and family and see they are real. I can't prove a God but I can prove a trans person. Reevaluate yourself and your stances.

Unfortunately I did buy it, but I didn’t know about what was going on about the tweet issue.
she never said fuck the trans
It’s called subtext, honey bunch. Learn about it
im going to put that game out there for ppl to pirate it and not pay for like if youre gon play it dont give jk more money
idk hard for me to even like the books when theyre just as problematic as rowling. they directly represent her thatcherist racist views towards black people , her anti semitic sentiment towards jews, and her cavalier view of chattel slavery. i dont think they ever stood for anything good
The fact that the game devs have actively gone out of their way to be trans inclusive is what saddens me the most. They clearly don't support JK or anything that she says, they've even gone out of their way to clarify that JK has absolutely no involvement with the game itself, yet JK's continued bullshit makes it impossible for the game to be judged fairly, and it sucks too because it looks astoundingly well made
TLDR: The game devs are anti-JK, but are still mandated to work on a Harry Potter game, and include things that would make JK throw a hissy fit
Rowling's bigotry is weird and disgusting
She is not a bigot she tells her own opinion. Everyone is entitled to one.
She didn't even do anything bad
But now you can handle real life and you hate it ???? Okay
@@LWeOAreVOneEyou hate it because of woke social culture
You admit, you love it without any social bias until you learned to hate her
@@LWeOAreVOneEbtw jkr is saying in her post that she has nothing to do with Purethink, the organization that created the game
Sam is incorrectly stating Purethink is an anti trans slogan..
This whole video is built in lies and misinformation
@Ryan Thomas Nope. She didn't capitalize the 'purethink,' so she's not referring to the company; she's a writer and knows how to capitalize proper nouns. She's talking about the concept of "pure think" and accusing Jessie of it. That's what the comment about "the truly righteous wouldn't just burn their books" is about. Besides that, from what I can see, Hogwarts Legacy is being developed by Avalanche Software under Warner Bros. Portkey Games label. The company PureThink has nothing to do with it from what I can tell.
Maybe if we start ignoring JK she'll go away.
My thoughts exactly. She's not even standing up for what she believes she just wants drama at this point.
Hogwarts legends....
Really?
One plot point of the new game is about stopping an enslaved group of people from overthrowing their oppressors
Yeaaahhhh that's the real kicker that the "JKR didn't work on the game!" devs elect to ignore. But hey! At least you get to explore the slave kitchens and run around... with your slave.
Guh, I think some of my brain cells just died reading those TERF reactions to Jessie's well thought out, grammatically correct tweet. I still like the movies, mostly because the younger actors disagree with JK, but they came out on DVD years ago and every time I watch them (my brother has them) it makes me sad that she's slid so far that there's most likely no way back, even if she does reconsider her ways. The internet doesn't forget.
You like the movies cause the actors disagree with a political belief from the creator of the story?
You have a real tough time separating art & the artist huh? 😂
