Johnny Marlin interesting you say that, because psychopaths in real life don't really have a personality of their own. They are always mimicking someone else. When you scrape past the act, they are completely emotionless. So it makes sense that by showing less emotion, you come across more as the bad guy.
The reason Oldman was overlooked for an award here is that at the time he was seen as an over the top newcomer actor, and many critics also didnt give Leon a lot of praise generally as a movie (it had different titles for European & US markets, a major disadvantage) because violence for violence sake relegated movies back then to the rated R violent shelf. Also, Oldmans performance was labelled "over hammed" by many, especially the references to liking Beethoven, and being on edge on drugs, which is fair comment. Reservoir Dogs and Henry: Portrait were also unfairly put in the same category in the same era for the same reason. But 25 yrs later, they didnt know what they had until it was gone, because Oldman was in his prime here.
@@johnhopkinson4054 in a literal sense this is true. Like Meisterly said every age has its own set of "standards" and a different take on them. Gary's performance is now considered a timeless masterclass performance. That will never change.
Like Kathy Bates amazing career defining performance of Annie Wilkes, it’s characters like Wilkes and Stansfeild that require a more hammy type performance because they are the over the top characters. But the fact that Gary or Kathy found a way to put nuances to their performance is actually more impressive to me than a lot of the cold emotionless villain performances we have seen over the years.
