What did I just watch! What a man, Gary Oldman! I realized I’ve watched many of these movies - only now realizing that some of the key characters were played by Gary Oldman!
Fascinating. I love when he played villians, one of the best in history of cinema like Norman Stansfield and Dracula, and less known but amazing role of Drexl Spivey.

I was thrilled that he finally won an Oscar. He deserved to win a long time ago, but he's so damned good that people don't recognize him from one role to the next. I cant count how many times ive watched a movie for the first time, not knowing the cast, and never realized it was Oldman until half way through. Like damn, Gary got me again!
Most actors have a certain "shtick" or "programme", their personal range of different speech patterns and body language patterns, they chose from and if they play a different character in a new movie, who is similiar to one they played in an earlier movie, they will play them in a similiar way. There are even some great actors who do that, f.e. if Leonardo Dicaprio (whom I admire a lot for his intensity and who does have a rather wide range himself) goes "ape shit" in a movie, he will look very similiar to him going "ape shit" in other movies. He does it well, always very convincing, but always in a similiar manner if his characters are similiarly constructed. And then there are actors like Gary Oldman, who, even when he plays a similiar character to one in his earlier works, he will always come up with an entire new character every time, a new idiolect, a new speech pattern, a new body language, new mimics. Sometimes I didn't even recognize him at first, when I went to a movie with him in it without knowing the cast, even though he's one of my favourite actors. He always surprises and impresses me in everything I see him in.
Daniel Day-Lewis and Gary Oldman may in fact be the best living actors at this present moment. Gary has provided us with so many memorable characters, it's almost like a "pilgrimage" whenever you go back to old movies he was in to appreciate them. For me, as a slightly younger person - my 'Mecca' of Gary is Agent Stansfield from "The Professional". I can't imagine what my movie-going life would be like today without seeing him in that role. What a fantastic actor.
DDL never exhibited the range of Oldman and has one big flaw that Oldman doesn’t have. He cannot break character once he enters it. Oldman doesn’t have that issue, he can literally flip the switch and be Drexl Spivey, Dracula, Jim Gordon or Winston fucking Churchill.
@@ruly8153 he’s one of the best of his generation which by definition makes him one of the best of all time, and the range of characters he has successfully portrayed without acting tells is broader than pretty much anyone. Brando can’t hold a candle to the man, Lewis could but both have the issue that once they got into character the couldn’t get out til filming was wrapped. That’s a huge deal.
I haven't seen many of his films, (maybe 2 or 3, honestly), and seeing this made my jaw drop! I used to think his performance in The Dark Knight was one of his best from what I'd seen. After watching this, I'd easily call it his least impressive. This man's ability is phenomenal!!
For me his performance in TDK trilogy only further proves how talented he is since it is so different than his other roles even if the performance itself isn't all that captivating.
The best part about this video is this channel. "Another TH-cam channel about film. But this one is dedicated to the appreciation of great actors." And has only one video. Gary Oldman. Well deserved imo.
It may be debated but some , but Gary Oldman, Is now and forever will be the greatest actor who has ever lived. No one can touch his body of Outstanding work, not just the volume of it, but also the execution! He’s NEVER turned in a half ass performance!
I think most great actors usually have 2-3 standout performances where they're unrecognizable and completely transcendent but Oldman almost does it every time. I can't say his movies are necessarily the best but even DDL is more repetitive in his speech patterns than Oldman is. I can't think of a more versatile actor than Gary Oldman.
It’s awesome that he conceived the look of the character as well. He took the role without reading the script. Tony Scott basically described the character as Alabama’s white pimp who thinks he’s black. Oldman took the role and created such a memorable on-screen presence.
That scene in True Romance was maybe my first exposure to Gary Oldman and it was absolutely incredible. I’m not sure that I knew it was him at the time. It was frightening then and it is still an extremely dramatic moment in movie history. I’ve never forgotten in and it’s been decades since I saw it.
I turned on Darkest Hour on my andeoid TV with only interest in learning the history, and thought the cover looked cool. Was very into the movie dialogues and Churchill's personality. Gave me goosebumps. Until the movie ended completely and I saw the cast... I went WHAAATTTT?!? I jumped out of my seat! Had to google it immediately out of complete shock and confusion. What da? Wow! All that was Gary Oldman? For real? And here I am watching this VDO leaning about many other roles I have entirely missed him out all along. What a master in his own class! Unbelievable.
HUGE fan of Mr. Oldman. He and Benedict Cumberbatch may be in a tie for top two fav British actors, though there are several I think very highly of! This is a wonderful compilation which not only displays his enormous versatility, but showed me there are many of his movies I have yet to see!
It's Daniel Day Lewis and Gary Oldman Best actors of all time . Both can speak so many accents flawlessly and perfectly. Great method actors. It's never a dull moment with G man
I have been binge watching every Gary Oldman movie I can find. Even the obscure ones! I'm OBSESSED in LOVE with this man!! Who knows the name of the movie where he plays a Skinhead, though???
This is such a great compilation! Thank you! There are VERY few actors at his level, imo. I first saw him in Criminal Law when I was a kid and I've been a huge fan ever since. His talent and versatility never ceases to amaze me.

He may very well be the greatest actor ever I'm up in the air about it. But he's in the company of Brando and Daniel Lewis
Brando ... yes
Ddl Is quality....
He’s not thaaast good
He’s not one of the greatest of all time
But he is one of the best of his generation
Brando is overrated
I haven't seen many of his films, (maybe 2 or 3, honestly), and seeing this made my jaw drop! I used to think his performance in The Dark Knight was one of his best from what I'd seen.
After watching this, I'd easily call it his least impressive. This man's ability is phenomenal!!
If you haven't seen watch The Professional ❤️
He agrees. He felt he didn't have much to do in the trilogy. However, he gives the character the respect it deserves.
The thing with Gary Oldman is you have very probably seen more of his movies than you believe. You just didn't see him acting.
The fact I didn’t know he was Resnov in the OG call of duty modern warfares until 15 years after they came out is crazy to me
For me his performance in TDK trilogy only further proves how talented he is since it is so different than his other roles even if the performance itself isn't all that captivating.
This dude had better win a life time achievement award.
He'd be perfect for the role of David Bowie
He's too old. Should have done it years ago. But obviously then I would've agreed with you.
Absolutely he could do it. 👀
The best part about this video is this channel.
"Another TH-cam channel about film. But this one is dedicated to the appreciation of great actors."
And has only one video.
Gary Oldman.
Well deserved imo.
He deserved a Oscar's nominee every year since 1986.
It may be debated but some , but Gary Oldman,
Is now and forever will be the greatest actor who has ever lived.
HOLY SHIT, Oldman played Drexl in True romance?! My jaw droped
Oldman is one of my favorite character actors of all time! He is AMAZING!!!
His Acting is Simplicity and Beautiful 👏🏼
Man of a thousand faces. There have been times when I didn’t even recognize him, he’s so good. 🥰
The role of Dracula in Bran Stocker’s Dracula was the magnum opus in his career.
HUGE fan of Mr. Oldman. He and Benedict Cumberbatch may be in a tie for top two fav British actors, though there are several I think very highly of! This is a wonderful compilation which not only displays his enormous versatility, but showed me there are many of his movies I have yet to see!
You have great taste in actors . Benedict & Gary are my favourite actors too. 🎉
Gary Oldman is simply the BEST!!!!!
A favorite if not the fave.
One of my favorite actors 😎
Love ya Gary..I was background in Oppenheimer, what an actor
It's Daniel Day Lewis and Gary Oldman
Best actors of all time .
Both can speak so many accents flawlessly and perfectly. Great method actors.
It's never a dull moment with G man
One of favorite actors. Totally brilliant.
I have been binge watching every Gary Oldman movie I can find. Even the obscure ones! I'm OBSESSED in LOVE with this man!! Who knows the name of the movie where he plays a Skinhead, though???
That he can go from the dark knight to true romance is crazy
Gary Oldman is an unbelievably good actor.
Enough to see him on "Leon the professional" to understand how good he is
This is such a great compilation! Thank you! There are VERY few actors at his level, imo. I first saw him in Criminal Law when I was a kid and I've been a huge fan ever since. His talent and versatility never ceases to amaze me.
He is obviously insane. An insane genius
Hands down one of the best performers of his generation maybe even all time
