My father quite frankly stated that, "The new system will be here before you graduate highschool. So there is no need to even consider it." Here I am with 2 children and 15 years past high school... I have never forgotten that conversation. This explains his beliefs. I will be saving for my children. I have no good reason to believe the idea has no merit for consideration.

But one elder's wife jumped on it and started telling everyone, congregation members and householders, Armageddon was coming in the 20th century. When it came time for the congregation Watchtower study, she raised her hand and the oblivious brother conducting it called on her. Most of us were cringing as she proclaimed the end was coming in no more than 10 years. I believe the other elders asked her husband to 'put her in her place' as she never spoke of it again. So glad I got out shortly thereafter.

Rational arguments really are comforting after a lifetime of apocalyptic predictions and false dichotomies. A lot of abuse occurs within this organisation, but I would argue that the belief structure itself is also traumatic and, ultimately, abusive. So consistent, rational rebuttal isn't just important as a method of wake-up; it's genuinely therapeutic for those who are 'awake', but are still coming to terms with the trauma caused by what they once believed.
That was the idea I grew up with! We would never see 2000. I had already faded by then and was still freaked out on New Year's Even 1999. I remember being very young, like 9 or 10 years old, and my oldest brother said "don't worry about turning 30. Armageddon will be here before then!" Ha! I can laugh now!!! but back then, it was terrifying!

And when we did the paragraph you're referring to, I leaned toward a friend of mine and whispered "I wish they (the writers) wouldn't do that (make predictions of this nature)." And he, a regular pioneer and ministerial servant sort of nodded and said "Yeah, I know," in agreement. I also wish I still had that issue ... But it probably went into the landfill with the rest of my Watchtower library about 20 years ago. No regrets!

Most witnesses I knew clung to this as their main indicator of when the end would come . How they got away with moving the goalposts on this is beyond parody.

I just saw this video, but man, brought back memories of an assembly I attended in 1989 where one of the speakers said something to the effect of, "the time is short, surely we can expect the end of this wicked system to come before the new millennium", and the attending witnesses, including my family, lost their collective minds with excitement. Now, however, my family denies that anything of the sort was ever said. Thank you for finding essentially proof of this in writing Lloyd!
They do this to a lot of their material actually. This would be a great subject to cover in detail. I remember there was several revisions in the Bible Teach book like this. One was where there was a pic of a candle having had the flame put out. It was there to illustrate how when we die we go nowhere amd cease to exist, but the original had smoke coming off of it and lots of people that studied it commented that that smoke was like our soul leaving the body lol. The wt took the smoke out of the pic, covertly, of course.

I remember looking at the arrivals at the Kingdom Hall library and thinking, "my, there's a lot that's been removed from what was originally printed"... Word to the wise: Keep your original magazines because you don't know how they'll be edited once they go to the bound volume...🤔...
I pointed the exact sentence out to an elder at the time...he hadn’t seen it yet so I showed him from my mag.....he just pulled a face, shrugged his shoulders and fobbed me off. When I showed it to others nobody could not see the millstone I was showing them. It would be same today....just like every other false utterance... oh, that was back then.

WT didn't make a cover-up in Japanese edition - it still reads "この二十世紀に完了するであろう業の基礎"~ "the foundation of the work to be completed in this 20th century" while French edition has altered expression "...... à notre époque". Greek edition is also unaltered: "... στον 20ό μας αιώνα".

Before I even watched this when I saw 1989, memories were automatically triggered. At the global assembly that year, I'll never forget, the organization proclaimed that the end would surely come before the year 2000, and it was all anyone could talk about for like the rest of that month, and now my family denies that ever happened.... of course they do. I remember it clearly because it was such a big deal. No surprising that they would try everything to hide even suggesting that.
Some years ago at a meeting there was an article about how close we were. The defining point was no more time for a new president, we were that close, Obama was president at that time and the elections were growing ever closer, well, we have trump, that was a few years back. I wish I new when to record or keep magazines cause I throw them away, I see now I should have kept them,at one time I had the really older books from the late fifties from my mom and they were covered in idols, sun gods , and all strange things o couldn’t understand I was too young. Omg 1989, the year I got married to a JW brother, under a dark cloud of guilt and embarrassment caused by me to my family.... All because I was pregnant before marriage. I married a brother who on the surface was upright but in private he was violent and controlling. Luckily I got the strength 9 years later to leave with my two children. Wow! I have the Spanish version of the bound volume and it says "siglo XX" meaning 20th century. This same quote was said in the book Revelation and It's Grand Climax... 1988 edition it says 20th century wich i have but on the 2006 edition it says in our days also I have it says "in our days". From English to Spanish it's amazing sometimes what is published.

I've always had an interest in space and it was always something I kept to myself IN FEAR of my parents reaction since the scientific proof is inevitable. They never saved money for me to go to school past high school and never encouraged me to ACTUALLY follow my own dreams since their idea of what my "dreams" were, were all based on Jehovah and the religion.
I was in the Canyon Country Congregation, north of Los Angeles California< then in 1989 and I remember when we studied the article. The watchtower conductor, last name Nichols, actually said, "so brothers, we will be in paradise within 11 years." I was not very strong in the "truth, I mean faith, then, and so I questioned an elder friend, last name Sherman, what he thought that statement meant. He said "well it means "SOMETHING" And so it did. It meant the boys in Brooklyn didn't know what they were talking about. LOL But I don't remember anyone really taking that sentence very seriously. Too bad the same couldn't be said for the rest of their crazy doctrine. Oh yeah. I'm not a JW anymore.

In the current WATCHTOWER ONLINE LIBRARY, you can read the same article (Jan 01, 1989) in other languages. WT didn't make a cover-up in Japanese edition - it still reads "この二十世紀に完了するであろう業の基礎"~ "the foundation of the work to be completed in this 20th century" while French edition has altered expression "...... à notre époque".
Greek edition is also unaltered: "... στον 20ό μας αιώνα".

Before I even watched this when I saw 1989, memories were automatically triggered. At the global assembly that year, I'll never forget, the organization proclaimed that the end would surely come before the year 2000, and it was all anyone could talk about for like the rest of that month, and now my family denies that ever happened.... of course they do. I remember it clearly because it was such a big deal. No surprising that they would try everything to hide even suggesting that.
Some years ago at a meeting there was an article about how close we were. The defining point was no more time for a new president, we were that close, Obama was president at that time and the elections were growing ever closer, well, we have trump, that was a few years back. I wish I new when to record or keep magazines cause I throw them away, I see now I should have kept them,at one time I had the really older books from the late fifties from my mom and they were covered in idols, sun gods , and all strange things o couldn’t understand I was too young. I sure wish I kept them, I ran away from home and never went back till two years ago after my stroke, but gee wiz, now I research and find out all the dirty secrets, I’m not getting g along with the elders or my sisters cause I told them a few things and they lost a few screws
Omg 1989, the year I got married to a JW brother, under a dark cloud of guilt and embarrassment caused by me to my family.... All because I was pregnant before marriage. I married a brother who on the surface was upright but in private he was violent and controlling. Luckily I got the strength 9 years later to leave with my two children. So much happened, I'm enjoying a simple life now, what a difference, so glad!!
When did they start printing the bound books? Do people still ask for old ones and is that why they changed the text in such an old magazine?

I actually remember this because me and my brother started hassling our parents about its meaning. Unable to clarify if it meant Armageddon would come before the new millennium or we wouldn't have to go on the ministry any more my dad distracted us with other stuff until we forgot about it ha ha

Before January 1, 2001, at least. Maybe before, but not after. So the prediction has well and truly failed by 2018.
They cleverly dangle the "paradise" & "armagedon" like a carrot before a horse. Some have spent their entire lives in the JW's believing they would see "the end" but it never comes.

This same quote was said in the book Revelation and It's Grand Climax... 1988 edition it says 20th century wich i have but on the 2006 edition it says in our days also I have it says "in our days".

I've always had an interest in space and it was always something I kept to myself IN FEAR of my parents reaction since the scientific proof is inevitable. They never saved money for me to go to school past high school and never encouraged me to ACTUALLY follow my own dreams since their idea of what my "dreams" were, were all based on Jehovah and the religion.

I was in the Canyon Country Congregation, north of Los Angeles California< then in 1989 and I remember when we studied the article. The watchtower conductor, last name Nichols, actually said, "so brothers, we will be in paradise within 11 years." I was not very strong in the "truth, I mean faith, then, and so I questioned an elder friend, last name Sherman, what he thought that statement meant. He said "well it means "SOMETHING" And so it did. It meant the boys in Brooklyn didn't know what they were talking about. LOL But I don't remember anyone really taking that sentence very seriously. Too bad the same couldn't be said for the rest of their crazy doctrine. Oh yeah. I'm not a JW anymore.
