    This is the last book I have finished and I totall agree about the first third or so being slow. I found it a bit difficult from the perspective that you knew something wasn't right, but there was nothing obvious to really pull you in. I have left a really short comment on goodreads because I thought it impossible to review without ruining the storyline too. Good to see you back!

    Excellent review. I'm struggling with the first 40%. So much so that I had to start a new book and put this one down ...I'll give this one another try thanks to you!

    Glad to see you back in my subscription box, I love your videos! I haven't read The Girl on the Train. I was planning to, but after reading and watching some book reviews I quickly took it off my TBR list. This one sounds interesting, I love a well thought out plot. It's unfortunate that the first half is slow and repetitive though, it seems like the book could have been edited down and still be a good read.

      ***** Thanks Serai! Glad to be back! Yes I think they could have cut off about 50 pages of the beginning and would have been a lot better. However still a really good realistic thriller.

    Sidenote: I finished Americanah and recalled your video about it saying, "Yes. Yes. Yes." And I so agree with you---> YES! I recommend that book so much I dreamed about recommending it last night. If you're interested in thrillers, I recently finished the audiobook of YOU. Highly recommend the audiobook over the printed version because the narrator is spot on.

    Agree with you 100%
    The book was so boring until basically the end of Part 1 and then the storyline TOOK OFF.

      Exactly what I thought. I honestly almost gave up on it until the very end of part 1. After that I couldn't get enough.

    Gone girl and Girl on the Train are on my hit list. Interesting a thriller from an ex police officer; different.

      Pretti Uneekhair Gone Girl don't know yet but it's not a priority read for me right now. The Girl on the Train is good but predictable, but I Let You Go was far better, except the slow beginning.

    So good to see you! A hit-and-run thriller. Those are always fun when you have that sort of instant blind spot for the culprit, only to find out how close he or she was to the actual victim. That kind of thing can go one of two ways. So at first I kind of wondered about that, until you mentioned how plausible the set-up actually was. Now I know you mentioned how the lead was boring and typical, but at any point did you find her (I'm assuming it's a woman-or hoping anyway) a little more resourceful and capable? You know I die for female leads in this genre, so I'm curious to know how much of the investigation fell into her lap and how much of it was by her own deductions. (Look, you got me started. Lol.)

    • @browngirlreading
      @browngirlreading  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Troi Towel The main character is directly involved and she is weak. The main detective is a bit stereotypical and was a little preoccupied by his the young woman on his team. You see where I'm going? ;) But that part is just added to the story but doesn't have anything to do with the main plot. IT's a predictable mini sub plot.

    Thanks for this review deedee. Like you, I don't often read thrillers, but I like books that delve into the psyche of others and I need a bit of a break (only a small one) from literary fiction, so I will check this one out.

    I found this book Amazing !! But I didn't find the beginning slow at all I couldn't put it down .. I have since retread it certain things read differently the second time around! But I agree with you about the comparison with the girl on the train ... This just seems more ..human?

    Great review....I can't say I've read this one. But I will look into it. If it's better than The Girl On The Train, I'll will give it a chance.

    I'm reading this right now and its sooo slow. Watched your review to see if its worth it and looks like I should stick through with it.

    • @browngirlreading
      @browngirlreading  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one takes a minute to get into. If I remember correctly I read about a third or a little over a third until things started to liven up. But if it really isn't floating your boat you probably should just DNF it.

    Oooo, once you said it was better than The Girl on the Train, I was definitely interested. I know we had similar feelings about The Girl on the Train, so I might like I Let You Go.

    I'm going to call that your Bad Points Finger. Girrrrl!
    I think that's a big thing with thrillers for me: I don't mind it not making sense if it grips me and the threads start to pull together but I do mind if it's 90+ threads which seem unrelated to no real purpose.

    • @browngirlreading
      @browngirlreading  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      literarydiversions Totally agree! She really came through though from 40% on. Some great surprises. Worth the read! A hell of a lot better than The Girl on the Train!

    I've been picking it up, reading a couple pages, falling asleep from boredom for MONTHS with this thing. Do I really need to read the first part? Is it relevant to the rest of the story?

  • @WKDowden
    @WKDowden 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review! I'm not sure I'll give this one a go though based on your review as I can't stand stories that drag. Very interesting that it's by a police officer though - have to admit that's got me interested.

    • @browngirlreading
      @browngirlreading  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Waynes Bookobsessions Give it a go just for the fact that it's better written than The Girl on the Train. lol! I say skim the first third. ;) But no this is not a priority book. Are you reading any of the Man Booker prize books? And when will you be filming again? IT's been a while, nest-ce pas?

      frenchiedee I recently did a review for All The Light We Cannot See and will definitely be reading as many as of the Booker long list as poss - Thanks for asking! The Year of the Runaways looks particularly interesting. Have you read any of them yet that you can recommend? I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday. x

    Is Ian alive or dead??

    Is there romance in this book?

    • @browngirlreading
      @browngirlreading  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This isn't a romance novel. It's a thriller/mystery.

    • @shari5033

      I understand what im asking if there is a romance element to the novel

    • @MilliVanilli2007
      @MilliVanilli2007 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there is. But it isn't overly developed, that part of the story. So if you are looking for a detailed romance, no. It is more just an element of a bigger picture
