I love how you wrapped up this video and I agree that Jerry is underrated by the masses but not by other musicians. The Beatles and the Dead are the two bands most studied in music schools and colleges. In 100 years, Hunter/Garcia tunes will still be sung. Hunter/Garcia will be mentioned in the same breath as Lennon/McCartney, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern (who Jerry was named after), Burt Bacharach, and Bob Dylan. I was fortunate to know Jerry and hang out with him for a bit in the '80s after his coma. I love him and miss him every day.

Without a doubt; have been to hundreds of live shows from WSP, Dennis Chambers, Allman bros, local bluegrass, Greg Brown, Neil, CSN, etc. and few and far between have provided the ride Jerry graced me with-

You can quibble about a lot of aspects of Jerry playing. His biting trebly tone(a bluegrass banjo player at heart and his tone reflects that), long meandering solos that require patience and the willingness to just let it happen in order to appreciate. Chord changes and song structure that seem simple, until you try to play them and realize how deceptively complex many of them are. Now try to memorize hundreds of those tunes along with lyrics that are commonly different not only on the verses, but the choruses and bridges as well. Then add on top letting those tunes evolve over 40 years and play each one in the moment like its the first time you heard it. Its a great musical accomplishment but it requires effort and patience to appreciate About as far form your standard 3 min pop song written by committee as you can get. For myself its about the closest thing to jazz that I enjoy. The improvisatory freedom is there, but without a lot of the complex extended harmonic structures common to jazz that require so much mental effort for my feeble brain to follow. There are jazz elements, but they are surrounded mostly by harmonic structures that have their roots in the simple folk music like the blues, rock n roll, and country that I grew up on. For me the Deads music goes down easy, but its varied and complex enough to never tire of. IDK if I could say the same about Hendrix's stuff. Yes he had awesome technique and r&b and blues chops, but I dont think his output was anywhere near as varied and complex, or incorporated so many different genres into an individual voice. Maybe if he had lived as long as Jerry but as it stands, to me once you've heard a half doz Hendrix tunes you pretty much have heard it as far as what he did. Groundbreaking and jaw dropping, sure, but it was only a snapshot of what he was capable of if he had continued to play for 40 more years, thousands of more shows, and hundreds of more tunes.

This was fun to read. Thanks. You summed up the thesis I wrote for music theory class in college in 1975. Back then I was studying Jerry's chromatic choices in the longer extended jams. Nobody in rock was playing like that back then.

I wouldn't take anything away from his guitar prowess, but I will comment on his emotional state. I saw them about 3 times, so I don't qualify as a dead head. But the vibe I got from him was he was a very sad fat guy who was just trapped in this role for the rest of his life. He had this whole nation dependent on him, he had to carry the weight of all these peoples expections and even livelyhoods on his shoulder. In the end he escaped into drugs. He was probably happiest freebasing all alone in his BMW.
