Man it's hard to believe our Guitar Superhero is gone. How blessed we were to witness his incredible talent...
I saw a video where his guitar tech said he would tune Ed's guitar slightly flat because Ed had a heavy fretting hand and he would naturally make the notes go sharp. So his tech compensated for this and lo and behold, he got the job!
That's a old clip . Always great to hear Eddie. Rip.
These are excerpts from a 1980 Guitar Player interview about the time Women and Children First was released.
Eddie also tuned the 2-4 strings so that they sounded good as a chord. This means the B string was a little flat. Try it, sounds good
Appreciate that detail!
In modern recording techniques it makes editing and punching in a lot easier. I learned this in the early 90s when I was still a free spirit.
Early 90s. Best time of my life. I'm with you on that one.
Back then it would have been a worse GD pain to come in to do some overdubs and try to 'find' pitch before you could do anything.
Real Rock & Roll! Thanx Eddie.
432 Hz is the way and that is the quarter step he speaks of. Tuning the same way helps with absolute pitch in the long run.
Tuning has always been subjective.
The only problem with the alternate tunings is when you're playing live, but I get it, Ed sounds like he was a free spirit, long live the king!
Why? As long as the instruments tune to eachother, it'll sound right.
Right I was gonna ask the same question , if the guitars and bass are tuned to each other or use the same tuning 1/4 step down or whatever it may be it should sound in tune .
@@MikeyAR7373 That's how they did it. Same with Pantera and a bunch of other bands.
Some guy did bring up that it wouldn't be in tune with say a keyboard/synthesizer (which Van Halen did have sometimes) which holds some water.
@@all_invite_0hm maybe why he didn't have keyboards in most of his songs. The ones with keyboard are half step or just standard I'm assuming.
@@all_invite_0hmwell my opinion is you won’t sound exactly like the album, a whole step down does not sound the same as standard tuning, but I suppose overall it might be splitting hairs.
It is a talent to be tuned differently than the others in the band - one needs to adjust to where notes “usually” are to where they are a half or whole step away. Next level theory in use. Jazz performers do it all of the time adjusting since the horns are in different keys or “tunings”.
He speaks quite nonchalantly about tuning, even though a strobe tuner was always visible in his setups (even in the really early days). He used compensated tunings, but I would be willing to bet he was quite methodical about it.
Tuners still work when down tuning!
Allan garber has the exact tuning’s Eddie used. In his channel. Different tuning s different song.
What about Runnin' With the Devil tuning?
E flat just half step down
@@TwistedRiffster I think he's referring to the major 3rd tuning between the G and B strings and slightly compensating to make those chords so in tune. Sounds great as long as you're playing that song. An open G chord sounds terrible that way, lol, but he wasn't doing that and it made the guitar sound amazing. But yeah, down to Eb for sure.
Yes exactly. It’s not just flattened but that song 2 and 3rd. Need extra fine tuning. Allan garber. Chanel had the exact. Sweetened tuning for Ed’s song. It’s awesome. In 5 seconds. You go. That’s nail that song . U have do it. Or is sounds wrong
Allan garber channel. Has the exact. Tunings for all evh songs. It’s great
I believe Black Sabbath tuned down one step(E string to D) on a couple of songs. It was neat. Brass instruments you can pull your main slide and get a lower tone, kinda of neat, but considered a sacriledge
D was standard on several Iommi albums, but I got the idea from Lou Reed decades ago . I've never used or liked E Standard.
When drop tuning, your ear loses its standard reference points at C #, and it tends to make even familiar patterns sound totally different.Bands like QOTSA have been using C standard, D Standard and E flat for decades, which is partly what provides their distinctive sound.I've found alternates essential when writing original material; they invite fresh ideas.
The only thing you can do to correctly tune a guitar to standard tuning IS to try to memorize what a low E or a low A sounds like and then tune the guitar to those strings , better done with harmonics 5th fret to 7th fret on y string below
There is a guy has evh set. Tunings. For different songs. Of Eddie’s . “Allan garber “has them all documented. Look at his channel. He has the the exact offset tuning s. Most extensive. Detailed tunings of evh
Allen is the man when it comes to evh stuff
I agree . To many people play by the rules and blindly follow not even questioning it . Eddie had his own rules and could think for himself . If someone invents one rule then why can’t someone else create another . Probably for this reason he was the greatest ever .
Rules matter when you're playing with ensembles or orchestras. Conventions matter when you're playing with the same group of people every night.
Eddie did a good job at tuning for the proper song that he needed to. He would cater to diamond Dave when he had to, and when he played with Sammy, he could do whatever he wants because Sammy can literally sing anything. I know I’m gonna get a lot of hate for this comment ha ha I don’t care.
YOU SUCK.
You're spot-on. Nobody hating that understands music.
Wrong, EVH always had a plan, nobody told him what to do, his band, his rules
@@autk if he didn’t tune down during the diamond Dave era it wouldn’t have worked and you know that. Go listen to Sammy sing those songs they’re not keyed down lol.
No hate here. I always like others opinions and insight on things. 🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵🎣
I think the sense is that the song and guitar dictates the way it should be tuned to sound good! It could be the position you're playing in,so you tune the guitar to itself.Sometimes like with the old acoustics, you can only crank the tuners so high.He rules the Hollywood streets! tone raven-gtr-We Are The Black Things(Hollywood CA!)Edward Van Halen was a musical genius, brilliant songwriter, and an amazing man!
what's the old saying,I did it my way😅
He would also tune the B string(usually) down a cent or two, until it rang intune with the Skinny E string , which wasnt "proper" but ...thats eddie
Intonation is important in recording…
Dimebag was doing the same
He sure did
i use to buy them either nickel bags or dime bags
He was no Frank Zappa, even though he would go to Frank's house and give Dweezil some lessons.Dweezol has some great albums out, he should start incorporating them into his show.
Thank God he didn't care for Franks music .
I play in a cover band. Singer with LSD can’t hit the high notes. Band decided to drop down a 1/2 step. I don’t like it strings feel like rubber bands 😑
He was just lazy. The reason you tune standard is for other instruments like keyboard .
That’s the real answer. It is being courteous to the other musicians you are playing with - unless you are doing it so that the others don’t need to adjust.
Actually it was he’s incredibly stupid ego. And Eddie can’t play the Blues per Eric Clapton
I think it’s safe to say he’s not stupid or lazy…… he’s earned the right to tune any f’in way he wants with HIS band. Like any of you tools can debate tuning with Eddie Van Halen… good god people.
It still works with keyboards, just down tuned, not out of tune!
yeah, that’s exactly what I think of when I think of Ed. That he was “just lazy.” 😂😂😂😂😂
Eddie def was not about rules anytime when it came to guitar,.......he built his own amps,.....wound his own pickups,.....built his own guitars,........that people pay a ridiculous amount of money for now,.....everything about his style was innovation,..experimentation ,...bending the rules,......thats EVH,....the king
Low E 12 cents low, A 10 cents low, D 8 cents low, G 4 cents low, B 6 cents low, high E 3 cents low.
Yea that doesnt even begin to scratch the surface on it especially in regards to how different a lot of the songs on VH1 are in regards to tuning
@@knightfall9394 I was referring to the sweetened tunings EVH used - not how to re-tune to play along with recordings.
@@bobmanners8624ah my mistake, but what you posted isnt really near it either especially for live stuff, ed is all over the place even with the final 2015 tour.
Allen garber figured this one out and it was supposed to be a live tuning if I remember right
1st string: Eb +27.7 cents
2nd string: Bb +27.9 cents
3rd string: Gb +29.6 cents
4th string: Db +30.0 cents
5th string: Ab +30.0 cents
6th string: Eb +27.7 cents
Pretty sure the only time Eddie played in tune was in the studio. Just sayin
Yea you dont know what you’re talking about and should probably do a bit more research. Just sayin
