Just when I'm over with all the Drumeo videos, the YT algorithm suggested me this channel! So happy to see other channels picking up the idea and bring it to other instruments!
Great move, this Drumeo-like blind jump format is awesome! I'm avid waiting for the next one. Nick Campbell is always inspiring. The guests players choice has been phenomenal and surely promises more. I rake my muted strings in celebration 🤘
There's another channel that does a similar challenge for keyboards. Maybe we should have them do a collab where each of them where they combine the tracks that are recorded with the original guitar and vocals to see how it turns out.
These are my favorite videos of yours. I have been playing for over 45 years and still learn new things all the time, but I learn more from these than any other. Just seeing how people process structure, how they build and arrange the bassline, where they play within each beat in relation to the drums, how they terminate each note, and all kinds of other things. This is the sort of thing that when I’m in the studio or constructing a line, I call upon the “______ attacked this in a really cool way”, or “there was a transition line that _____ did in the Scott’s Bass Lesson video that I should reference.” Bravo for doing these. Well done.
Nick crushing Nickleback with a P on flats is exactly what I needed today! I love this format. I actually do this type of exercise often. Take an unfamiliar tune, remove the bass (thanks AI) and see what I can come up with. It's a lot of fun! I encourage everyone to try it!
Absolutely love this series! Seeing how other bassists approach arrangements for songs and hearing their interpretation is incredibly helpful and insightful.
Love this. :) What Drumeo started doing with the let-the-musician-create-whatever-they-feel-off-the-cuff thing is *super* interesting. A great example of this is what Dirk Verbeuren of Megadeth came up with for The Killers' Mr Brightside.... totally different, but *so* high quality. Great to see the musicians react to the original parts & talk about those straight after their efforts too. There can never be too much of this for bass, drums, guitar, whatever!! :)
Saw a video once of a guy that played live drumparts for popsongs with computer drums...all the fills and variations made the songs so much better! Love to see that musicianship still makes all the difference.
Nick did a great job, loved the vibe and note choices. Interesting how the sound/ tone made such a difference though. I am normally a P-Bass with flats player but I loved the tone of the bass on the original. It really suits the song.
Couple of thoughts... 1. we need more of the blind bass playing videos just like this one. the format is awesome and informational to see really skilled players break down songs and how they approach writing. 2. not a huge Nickelback fan, but this song is kinda catchy and slaps. I feel ashamed for saying this.
the vocals sound like an applebee's comercial, the guitar sounds like the intro to Monday Night Football, and the producer decided to just not record the bass in the final mix.
Love this series, but you really need two takes.. a producer friendly one, and then an el estepario hilarious over play one for the lolz and amazement.
This is a perfect example of how basses are tools, and there’s different rooms for different jobs, this was definitely not a P bass with Flats, but I like how he did it anyways, Mike is a solid bass player! I luv these!!
He’s a killer player. Out of his genre and not knowing the song…? He did an awesome take 🤘 I play an active 5 with a pick, so I would probably get close here, but I’m not in the same ballpark as him on most other genres. Killer job.
I know the thing behind this exercise is bout putting people out of there element with the musical choice but why not give them something in there wheel house they've never heard too..this just felt like a missed opportunity to see a phenomenal player like nick really stretch out, still appreciate the content
Nick was very hyper-critical of himself, which I can totally relate to but lol come on you'd never heard the song how could you expect to know what part is actually in the bridge when you did a great job playing what "could" be in the bridge. Anyway, this is fun, but I'd like to see some average bassists do it-- get some mistakes in there and wildly wrong choices. Maybe when it's Scott's turn ;)
Haha, Nick listening to NICKelback! 😂🤪 Also in all seriousness because I'm like Dave Grohl in a sense that, I'm not a trained musician on guitar or bass. However, watching this along with Sean Hurley jamming with Jake Reed (not an SBL video) is helping me understand how to play with the drums. But Ian, Scott, Sharon, do y'all feel how much groove and just PULSE Nickelback has in this song and some of the other great hits over the past 20 years? They have insane groove. Chad Kroeger's brother, I got you man.
Canada enters the chat lol. Streetheart had amazing bass lines.. Spider is a criminally under recognized bassist outside of Canada. I vote 'Action' to cover tho.. rights to a stones song would be rough.
There is a a hell of a lot music out there worse than Nickleback these days. Yet everyone still gangs up on the hate train just because its the trend. Its not music i listen to but at least it's real music, its solid stuff. I want to see more successful bands playing real music.
Yeah this was corny in a sense but so is most of the rock I like. And that gets a pass cause it's "old and didn't know better". Better than what? F**k it. Haha
I love how Pat Finnerty did a specific episode of why this song stinks and totally destroyed it, then Nick comes on SBL and makes it a listenable song. TH-cam is a wild place man.
Hey SBL I've benn following you for a while and have looked some into your older videos. But, I am curious, with all the Basses that you have, have you ever tried Peavey's original Bass? The 1978 T-40 Bass? I have 2 1978 T-40's and love them and their intricacies. Don't use them much for gigging anymore but curious as to what your take is on the T-40's? By the way, this is my 1st time hearing that song by Nickelback and Nick Cambell did a masterful job. Thanks for this interesting video.
This is kind of like the Drumeo's "first time hearing" for drums of course, As a newbie on bass this is pretty cool, don't get me wrong i'm not a nickleback fan
@@devinebass yeah I bought a G series about 20 years ago when I was 14 and it still goes hard. I haven’t played in about 6 years and your videos have really inspired me to get back to it. You guys rock! Keep it up.
Nickelback may always get shit no matter what but there's no denying that Mike comes up with some great bass lines to go alongside Chad and Ryan's absolutely killer riffs, also if I could suggest another artist I would love to see someone (be it another bassist or even either Ian or Scott) take on a Slipknot song and give some love to the late, great Paul Gray because he's an incredibly underrated bassist and came up with a lot of really solid bass parts that compliment Jim and Mick's guitars
Nickelback is like how the Beegees were before. It became an iconic trend to say you didn't like them. Because they were a big proponent of disco music. Nickelback was the biggest proponent of taking metal and alternative and turning it into pop. Although I feel it is misdirected. I feel the heat should go to Chris Jericho for pop metal that is completely unmemorable, but he slags memorable grunge music.
@@neaituppi7306 I can confidently report that I have never enjoyed their particular brand of cookie cutter radio metal. "Leader of Men" was good but that's it for me.
Proud student moment right here. THAT'S MY TEACHER EVERYONE, what a beast.

agreed! just way too much talking for me lol
There's another channel that does a similar challenge for keyboards. Maybe we should have them do a collab where each of them where they combine the tracks that are recorded with the original guitar and vocals to see how it turns out.
@@TheBigburcie - "Pianote" is the channel you're talking about.
I just came here from there as a matter of fact.
Campbell is a monster player.
Thanks man
I love this format. I especially loved that he was willing to talk out his thought process during his decision making.
This was super cool. Nickelback is under-appreciated. The memes are funny, but they can jam.
Love for Nick and Nickelback ❤🎸❤

Nick you are a real talent
I would love to hear Nicks Bass parts processed to fit in the mix.
Nick crushing Nickleback with a P on flats is exactly what I needed today! I love this format. I actually do this type of exercise often. Take an unfamiliar tune, remove the bass (thanks AI) and see what I can come up with. It's a lot of fun! I encourage everyone to try it!
Bringing "the wrong bass" really is just the icing on this episode. Never knew P with flats could rock like this
Nick: Nailing intricate parts
Notes: Don't play the downbeat
please more off this kind of videos , is soooo goooooooood
More to come!!
His line is killer. Would Just change the approach for a more agressive attack on strings
The flat wounds aren’t helping on that note no doubt!
I don't know... I feel like a little fuzz, it would of fit! The bass is sitting great in this mix
Absolutely love this series! Seeing how other bassists approach arrangements for songs and hearing their interpretation is incredibly helpful and insightful.
Cheers, more to come!!!
I questioned his note choices, at first….
Then he laid that fat groove, and everything came together for me.
Outstanding!
Cant wait for videos like these! Pls make these more! Its not very often that this format come out. On that note Hadrien next pls!!😊😊
More to come and we would LOVE to see Hadrien crush this!
Love this. :)

SBL completely ignores Nick’s hat and gives him Nickelback
😈
Hahaha
🤣🤣🤣
Stfu. Nickelback are awesome
What’s wrong with Nickelback??
I like very much what you are doing with these awesome bassists. Keep the good work 💪🏾
Glad you're enjoying these!!
These are the best videos. I love seeing the thought process - helps me come up with ideas and a process for them.
👍👍👍
Nick killing it on a P bass with flats! 🤘 👏👏👏 Loved it! 👍
🔥🔥🔥
Scott: Headbobbing
Nick: Headbobbing
Me who's only ever picked up a bass once in my life: Headbobbing
Nick’s part definitely added some syncopated funk and made the song mo betta. I can definitely hear Jamerson’s influence on Nick.
Had the same thought
Like John Paul Jones. I always said JPJ is what Jamerson would sound like if he were a rock bassist. Especially Zeppelin II
Had a great time watching that was fun!!!!😊
And obviously, Nick is awesome and his take is a perfect alternative to the original part.
Nick did a great job, loved the vibe and note choices. Interesting how the sound/ tone made such a difference though. I am normally a P-Bass with flats player but I loved the tone of the bass on the original. It really suits the song.
There’s actually two bass tracks.
Super interesting and entertaining IMA, the drumeo format on baass kills! GJ buddy 🤟
Couple of thoughts...

2. not a huge Nickelback fan, but this song is kinda catchy and slaps. I feel ashamed for saying this.
I really love this format! Get Adam Nolly Getgood on a jazz or R'n'B tune, that would be very cool!
We would love to see Nolly do one of these!!
This was a cool jam vid for sure. I love these colabs and you all's appreciation for music!
Dude nailed it!
💯💯💯
The best thing about this song is Pat Finnerty’s video
I was really happy to see SBL finally acknowledged this Tortured Agony rip-off ;]
I Iove that I've never heard this song before either 😂
Thanks guys & Shaz, interesting conscious method breakdown to catch the song as quickly as possible.
Love this guy. Thank you Scott!
I want u to make more of this.
More to come!!
Absolutely agree 🎸🤘
This P-bass tone makes me so happy even though it’s kinda out of place on a metal record.
Don’t know why so many people have the hates for NB, great improv by the way
👍👍👍
because our ears work and we've heard their music.
the vocals sound like an applebee's comercial, the guitar sounds like the intro to Monday Night Football, and the producer decided to just not record the bass in the final mix.
Keep this series coming 🙏
More to come!!
Love the content you guys make. the post mortem with Nick was awesome.
Love this series, but you really need two takes.. a producer friendly one, and then an el estepario hilarious over play one for the lolz and amazement.
1. Nick is amazing
2. Nickelback have been criminally underrated
3. Go listen to the sea shanty version of Rock Star.
1. Yes 🤘
2. Also yes 👍
3. On my way, that sounds like a good time 😁👍
My dude brought a Rolls Royce to a track event and still made it work. #Respect
This is a perfect example of how basses are tools, and there’s different rooms for different jobs, this was definitely not a P bass with Flats, but I like how he did it anyways, Mike is a solid bass player! I luv these!!
I was just happy to hear he didn’t go for distortion or fuzz to match the guitar feel.
Great song, great bass!
He’s a killer player. Out of his genre and not knowing the song…? He did an awesome take 🤘 I play an active 5 with a pick, so I would probably get close here, but I’m not in the same ballpark as him on most other genres. Killer job.
Great job!! 🤘🏻
Kinda feel like that on a jam session.🤘
Love this series
Glad you're enojying them!!
Nick Campbell is like the reincarnation of Chaz Chandler. Super bassist with excellent taste. Even the voice seems to resemble Mr. Chandler
The opening riff reminds me so much of Emmure, so you can imagine the disappointment when I heard it was just a regular Nickelback song
Love this! Maybe suggest the bass part to Puddle of Mudd - Psycho … plenty of cool little moments in there.
I know the thing behind this exercise is bout putting people out of there element with the musical choice but why not give them something in there wheel house they've never heard too..this just felt like a missed opportunity to see a phenomenal player like nick really stretch out, still appreciate the content
Nick takes Nickleback to Iron Maiden with his bass tone.
Yo this dude’s bass line is phat!💪
About time SBL showed Nickelback some love

It’s those little details that make “easy” songs kind of difficult
Funny that he mentioned AC/DC because I was getting a strong Thunderstruck vibe on the choruses.
Motown meets metal...
I want to see you (Ian) or Scott take a rip at Streetheart's album (or live) version of "Under My Thumb". Dare y'all - LOL!!!
Canada enters the chat lol. Streetheart had amazing bass lines.. Spider is a criminally under recognized bassist outside of Canada. I vote 'Action' to cover tho.. rights to a stones song would be rough.
Great concept !! you have to do it with Munir Hossn ! it will be fantastic :)
We would love to have Munir on the channel to do one of these!!
Campbell just destroyed this song , a beast he is !!🙌

a really cool format

This is incredible, I hope he enjoys being traded to Nickelback, because that KILLED
Finally!!!!!
up front and boosted it sounds a bit out of place, but I bet if his line was seated in the mix it would sound great. Cool interpretation

Nickelback...good, actually?
This kinda rocks, actually. Still a bit poppy but a looong way from "look at this photograph"!
Really cool!!!
I view Nickelback as a a sort of rock-funk band. Like, is that weird? They have a ton of funkyish groove in a rock context
Great song
Please start turning up the bass in theses videos!!!
Try using headphones if you aren't already!
turn the bass sound up guys
What are you listening through? If you're listening via phone/tablet speakers, plug in some headphones
Vers interesting.
Please do some more.
More to come from this series!
tbh I've never heard that track either lol. Nickelback actually had rocking songs? who knew...
I NEED TABS TO NICK'S

A lot of baseball hats on this channel.
Nice!
This is kind of like the Drumeo's "first time hearing" for drums of course, As a newbie on bass this is pretty cool, don't get me wrong i'm not a nickleback fan
Kind of like? It's literally the same thing
I still cant get my head around all the hate thrown at nickleback, theyve done dome absolute killer stuff.
Do you guys have any Cort basses? Would love to hear your thoughts on them.
Great instruments at a great price point, they punch well above their weight for the most part!!

I'd love to hear a take where he grabs a 5-er and combines the parts.
This is the only time I have ever enjoyed anything by Nickelback.
Mike portnoy did a Nickelback one on drumeo, shit was awesome too

"we took this great bassist and made him listen to slop"
He looks so much like Billy West
Imagine he plays this with his Dingwall
He's a ridiculously talented geezer.
He really really is!
Ngl, I like Nick's version better
Nick is incredible for coming up with that on the spot - but you can tell he's out of his element here and doesn't rly get basic 'rockisms'.
Yeah exactly. The verse was begging for pumping 8th notes and drop d tuning.
“I don’t even own a bass that sounds like this.” - Nick Campbell
