I think this might be the second time in my life I've heard this song and I attended conservatory for bass performance and played professionally for a little while. There's a whole world of music out there. Your standards aren't everyone else's. I've played at jam sessions with guitarists who have never played a blues before, but then they knew every note to every Randy Rhoads solo or whatever. I find that mind boggling, but that's just the way it is.
Isn't it weird before his go at it he says "I'm gonna let Dave have the intro" and in the end when they reveal who the band is he goes "aaaah". How did he know it was Dave Grohl singing then if he didn't know the band?
3:34 How can he say "I'm gonna let Dave have the intro" if he's never heard the song before? Does he know FF and DG but not The Pretender? Seems unlikely.
Any professional musician is at least familiar with who Dave grohl is. He was in 2 of the most popular rock bands of the last 30 years. Even if you don’t know their music, you know dave
It’s not hard to believe. If you don’t listen to a certain genre of music, and you’re a working pro in another area, then you don’t have time to hear everything that’s out there.
Videos like this shows the real difference between pro musicians and the rest of us. A lot people can play nice licks and crazy chops. The pros have elite level ears. They simply listen better than the rest of us
At 3:34 he says "I'm gonna let Dave have the intro". Obviously that doesn't necessarily mean that he knows the song beforehand, they _could_ have told him after the first playthrough that it was Foo Fighters and just edited it to look like it was all revealed after the final take, but it does seem a bit odd. Sean Hurley is nonetheless still awesome and an absolute beast and I have no doubt he'd be able to do play this by ear this quickly regardless if he actually does it in this video.

What makes a difference is the best part in 4:47-4:48 and 5:02. Great play, Sean!!
Joe dart or Bobby Vega would have interesting approaches
Props to the editing of this video. Especially in the first play section. The cuts were seamless.
Would love to see Robert DeLeo on here
Sean ROCKED it! Loved his very powerful way of writing and then playing what he heard. Amazing. My head exploded. I am going to go burn my basses now.
Jumping on that drumeo train eh
can't argue with a really solid type of content 😂 seemed like a waste that it didn't exist for bass 😜
get it girl!@@devinebass
I am not a bass player and had never heard this song but this video was actually really fun to watch! Loved the energy and passion! Im a new fan. Thank you!
🧡🧡🧡
How can he be a bassist for so many famous musicians without ever hearing a song as well known as the pretender?
I think this might be the second time in my life I've heard this song and I attended conservatory for bass performance and played professionally for a little while. There's a whole world of music out there. Your standards aren't everyone else's. I've played at jam sessions with guitarists who have never played a blues before, but then they knew every note to every Randy Rhoads solo or whatever. I find that mind boggling, but that's just the way it is.
I was saying the same thing. This song has been played out to extremes both on radio and TV.
@@josephwalton487 you think pro musicians spend a lot of time listening to the radio these days?
Isn't it weird before his go at it he says "I'm gonna let Dave have the intro" and in the end when they reveal who the band is he goes "aaaah". How did he know it was Dave Grohl singing then if he didn't know the band?
Yeah I'm not buying it lol , this is a ubiquitous radio airplay song at this point
I love how pumped Ian gets lol made my day!
That was completely bad ass. This needs to be a weekly series.
🔥🔥🔥
I refuse to believe he never heard this.
Same.
It’s not hard to believe. If you don’t listen to a certain genre of music, and you’re a working pro in another area, then you don’t have time to hear everything that’s out there.
Me too
Watch more videos of Sean Hurley. He really is all that and more.
no words man. brilliant in every sense. thanks for letting me see this.
there is no way he never heard it before
Yes, there is.🤓
Videos like this shows the real difference between pro musicians and the rest of us. A lot people can play nice licks and crazy chops.
The pros have elite level ears. They simply listen better than the rest of us
💯💯💯
My first thought is always how is it a professional musician has never heard an extremely famous song before??
Huge fan of SBL, Scott, Ian, Sean Hurley, and the Foo Fighters. This is a dream come true for me. Thank you!
absolutely no way in hell he has never heard this.
The guy is a top session guy
At 3:34 he says "I'm gonna let Dave have the intro". Obviously that doesn't necessarily mean that he knows the song beforehand, they _could_ have told him after the first playthrough that it was Foo Fighters and just edited it to look like it was all revealed after the final take, but it does seem a bit odd. Sean Hurley is nonetheless still awesome and an absolute beast and I have no doubt he'd be able to do play this by ear this quickly regardless if he actually does it in this video.
What a start of my Friday morning 8-12-‘23 in Holland. Just came out of my bed and this is the first thing I heard. I’m a big Foo Fighters fan and than mister Sean Hurley on base. Brilliant film brilliant performance. My weekend can’t go wrong. Thanks Guys. I’ve seen a few differences in my bassline of the Pretender. Going to work on that
There is a 0% chance he hasn’t heard this song as a bassist for those artists- I’m shocked
Not sure why everyone says this. I love Foo Fighters, I know every song, but not everyone listens to everything.
You might not have figured this out, but he was busy with his own career, not sitting around in a basement listening to all the songs in the world.
This song won a Grammy in 2008. From Wikipedia: “The Pretender was the most densely played alternative rock song of 2007. It held the record for longest running number-one in the Modern Rock Tracks' history”. Just seems pretty hard to miss!
Man, what a great perform!!!!
He looks like knows this song.
Great feelings.
