    I have cat grass/catnip for my cat, in that way I distract him from the other plants. It helps!

    I have a small can that I put 4 pennies in and when my cat does something that I don’t want him to do I make noise with the pennies. I leave the can on the desk that I don’t want him up on. Worth a try.

    I guess each grower does what works for them. My oncidiums (especially my sharry baby heaven’s scents) do not like moss. They grow in a mixture of orchiata bark and perlite. I’m thinking about doing an experiment with a seedling in semi hydro... actually with a Phal as well... my cats do not touch any of my orchids🤷🏽‍♀️...😁they just sit on their perch’s and watch me working with them.

      You're lucky your cats stay away! Nothing more frustrating than cat bites on orchid leaves. Yes, the medium completely depends on your environment! I've been experimenting with leca as well and my phals seem to like it. I haven't tried with the oncidiums yet, but I'm considering switching a few this spring. Thanks for watching!

    I just got a Sharry Baby 'Ruby Doll'. It's my second oncidium type and my first labeled orchid. I hope the fragrance won't be too strong once it blooms.

    What a cool Sharry Baby collection! Funny, I only have the Aka Baby. I heard they’re more compact and have shorter spikes than the reg Baby...but my cat broke the spike, so I will have to wait next year to see if it’s true. They turn into beautiful space hogs with their giant spikes 😁

      Thanks for watching Jess! Yes! I've heard the same if the Aka. Baby. I hope to find that one someday. Some folks have said the same about Heaven Scent Redolence, can't wait to see it bloom. Alas, our cats love to set our orchids back. One day, they will bloom ferociously for us :) Have a great weekend!

    I have my orchids in my room and the cat is not allowed in there anymore. I also keep my houseplants up really high and my cat is lazy and won't jump up that high to get to the plants lol

    Beautiful video. Question when you mentioned self watering pot how much water is poured in the reservoir? Cheers and happy growing.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching! When I put it into the self watering pot, I did it for times when I go on vacation during summer time. I find oncidiums so thirsty and they need to be watered as they are approaching dryness. I only add water to the reservoir in the summer, when I'm unable to water, so I'll add about 2 inches of water and leave it there to absorb slowly, this lasts for a few days. I don't always leave water because I found that it rots the moss if I'm constantly leaving the reservoir full! I've learned over time that inorganic is best for self watering (leca) since it doesn't break down. I'll probably switch this next year. I hope this helps :)

    Nice collection there Nicole. Have you noticed much difference in the fragrance between them all? I’ve got a ‘Sweet Fragrance’ and a no ID but they smell the same to me. It could be of course that the no ID is also a Sweet Fragrance! 🤷‍♂️

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I noticed a slight difference between the red fantasy and heaven scent sweet baby. Both smelled deliciously sweet and chocolatey. Red fantasy is a bit stronger. The original sharry baby that hasn't bloomed since 2017, I think will bloom soon, I need to get a new whiff of it since I forgot and can't really compare. Thanks so much for watching 🙂

    Good morning Nicole I have the heaven sent but it's not in spike for a year now I need to devide her and my cat also eating the leaves too. Like you I didn't know how to grow oncidium either so I'm learning. Keep safe and happy growing : )

      They are so easy to take care of, yet even if you mistreat them, they are resilient and survive. Can't wait to get blooms again on my older ones. Now I know better ☺️ Have a great weekend!

    OMG! I just came across your video and i'm so excited! My very first Sharry Oncidium is being delivered today. This will be my first Oncidium, is it best to grow her in bark or moss? I live in NY too! I do have Phals, Cattleya, and Dendrobium they didn't seem to be doing well in moss so I switch them to bark (some are in a mixture of bark & moss). I'm hoping my Oncidium will do well. Any advice? Thank you

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yay! Oncidiums are easy to grow here. I like growing them in moss. Oncidiums like more moisture than cattleyas and Dendrobiums..I recommend watering them as they approach dryness. Water thoroughly but let them drain, then water again when you see it's starting to get dry, but not bone dry. Let me know how it goes!

      It's so frustrating! I keep the thin leaved orchids on grow shelves where my cat can't get to them and keep the precious ones on display in my bedroom and don't let her in. I wish my cat would stop it! I would love to be able to display them in the main living area but she's so destructive. Thanks so much for watching, and have a lovely day ♥️😊

    I had a cat that bounced off my walls - just for fun. Explaining paw prints 5 feet off the ground was hysterical.
    Cats need to feel secure as they walk around. Create an unstable, spongy environment around the pots to change her habit. Put pots in a 4-5" +/- deep tray and surround the tray with cactus, spongy balls. Or something like that. Go to the Dollar store and see what they have that might work & looks decent. Or, can you hang them from the ceiling.
    I know what you're going through. Had cats for decades. When my last cat died she was replaced by a dog.
    Just read: Oils like citronella, lavender, peppermint, lemongrass and orange tend to repel cats when they smell them and are nontoxic.

      Thank you so much for the tips here! I understand the cats bouncing off the walls. My cat does the same thing. She doesn't get that high, but I have some epic paw prints to clean when I do a deep clean this spring. 😂 Really appreciate the suggestions, they are good ones! Going to try some of those oils, and perhaps find a un unstable barrier for my grow shelves. Thanks for watching ☺️

    Perhaps rubbing some orange or clove oil along the edge of the shelf would deter your cat.

      This is a great idea, thank you so much. I'm going to give it a try! She's driving me crazy, she still jumps on my shelves and digs into the pots (sometimes knocking them down). Appreciate the recommendation, and thanks for watching :)

    Better ideas: Surprising smells cats hate
    Citrus: orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit. Citrus smells are widely reported as being repugnant to cats. ...
    Lavender, geranium, and eucalyptus. ...
    Rosemary, thyme, and rue. ...
    Banana and mustard. ...
    Pepper, curry, and cinnamon. ...
    Mint, wintergreen, and menthol. ...
    Pine and cedar. ...
    Dirty litter box.

      Lowes sells a product called " cat, Dog Away" . Or something like that. It is a powder that contains things they dont like . You could put some in little containers on your shelves. Or I think sprinkle some on media. Not poison. I put some in a small container with USED coffee grounds. Lasts a month or so. Also hot taco powder works for some dogs cats. How about citronella oil on leaves?
