    Ian Bremmer's Quick Take:
A Quick Take to kick off your Monday morning. Let's talk for a moment about the state of US politics, US democracy. It's the one thing that almost all Americans today can agree on, and that is that their political opponents at home are fundamentally opposed to democracy.
Now, that is actually something I think that unites Americans in kind of a weird way. If you are a Biden supporter, you believe that Trump and MAGA supporters are fundamentally opposed to democracy. If you are a MAGA supporter, you believe that Biden and the establishment Democrats are fundamentally opposed to American democracy. It is incredibly dysfunctional. It is no way to operate a government.
It is no way to build a nation. And that means, you know, when you believe that your political opponents are opposed to democracy, you take away their value as people, you think that their political views are wrong and they need to be erased. They don't need to be engaged with sensibly. You also believe that anything that you might do to ensure that your opponents don't take power is justified because you're fighting over something very essential. And so it's kind of Machiavellian. It's the ends justify the means. Any means are justified if your opponents are fundamentally opposed to your system. And I mean, I certainly have political views of who I think is and is not appropriate. And I've said that historically, and I will continue to with this election. But this piece is not about this.

What on Earth are you talking about? The promise to lower immigration has been part of parties' campaigns for years on end now. Or you can just look up polls on the subject. Also, free movement was for EU citizens, not Africans or Asians. You seem to be grossly ignorant about this subject. I thought you liberals were supposed to be so well-read, educated, and informed.

Both parties oppose democracy. That's why they don't let third parties in debates and it's a nightmare for them to get on ballots. And they'll never reform our voting system because it means someone moderate who actually appeals to the greatest number of Americans might get elected and we can't have that. The parties cause politicians to act in the party's interest instead of in America's. Washington had it right.
The Trump faction is definitely the craziest right now though, so I guess I'm voting Democrat instead of for a candidate I actually like. Again.*sigh* Props to Trump for getting a libertarian to vote Democrat.

I think my political opponents have some great and some poor policy positions - they likely think the same about me. I don't think they are anti-democracy. One of my dear friends from my time in the Army was an African-American from Texas. I loved him like my own sibling. We used to sit in front of a George Foreman grill and watch Cornish hens rotating through the glass, while drinking beer and taking football. Political figures will tell you that there are race issues throughout the country but most people are like me and Juan - friends or potential friends that have not yet met. Shame on the swamp for dividing us.

The unifying position is that both parties are disasters.
It looks to me that being too loud in favor of either will have you quickly identified as a very gullible soul!
I don't see many people making public cases for either candidate. I think it's just too embarrassing an activity.
The popular base of both parties' are tired of the nonsense.
It turns out being marginally better than the worst accusations towards your opponent only gets you so far.
We need a significant popular mandate, and to achieve something for once in the eyes of the general public.
The status quo of debt servitude and lyin' about it is not a long term solution.
It also has zero democratic legitimacy.

I think we have an issue with the term “democracy”. I love my constitutional republic and our democratic way of electing representatives and many levels of government, but I want a country based on the wisdom of natural law, diffuse in where power lays, and through laws codified and clearly applied. Ian, allow my to take exception to your reasoning on, "Trump on the ballot." You completely ignored, as did the Supreme Court, the 14th amendment the the US Constitution. If we don't like a provision in the constitution, it provides a mechanism for changing that provision. Until we make that change, the constitution is the law of the land.

    • @Alopen-xb1rb
      @Alopen-xb1rb 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Not a fan of Trump at all but the Supreme Court did look at the 14th amendment. And it rightly pointed out that the method of determining sedition against the government is not really clear and best left with Congress. The alternative is states can remove their political opponents off the ballot at will. That is not a healthy path to follow. It’s just frustrating since Congress is so dysfunctional right now.

That's why the American obsession with democracy is fundamentally flawed. It is a way of selecting your leaders which tell you what you want to hear, and not what you need. It's not based on the will of the people but rather the attention of the people.
An honest system would not need a process like that to elect a good leader, and a dishonest system is dishonest enough that democracy will not save it.
There is a difference between "the common people have the power to run the government" and "people participate in a ritual every few years to cast votes to elect some government officers". There is a problem when you fudge the difference between these two things under the word "democracy".
