    For a while I had a bad case of distro hopping and trying different things without ever being completely satisfied. I tried Zorin on a whim and long story short, Zorin is my go-to distro now. I will be surprised if something else comes along that will make me switch again.

    I agree about ElementaryOS. I've been playing with Zorin 16 recently. It's quite nice, but I can't make myself like it as much as the Cinnamon Desktop. For the heck of it, I added Cinnamon to Zorin just to see how it acts. I was quite surprised. Zorin Cinnamon works great, and RAM usage on a fresh boot is a bit lower than most distros running the Cinnamon Desktop. After uninstalling gnome-software, it was about 640 MB. That's significantly less than Mint or Debian running Cinnamon. (I don't use gnome-software.)

    Awesome, really appreciate the info and opportunity to learn. You're channel is truly very valuable for many, I hope they get to learn too. Do you have a quick overview of how best to switch, like an overall summary for 2021? While the detailed videos on new distros etc are helpful, it's too much info for many who need a quick introduction, especially those who are less experienced with computers in the first place. I'm trying to get people in South Africa to switch, for all the reasons, but mainly cost as that is a big factor for them. Thanks.

    I absolutely adore Elementary's UI and find it very minimalist while also having enough depth to stand out. I was planning to install it onto a 128GB live USB until I saw this, and I know now I'm going to opt for Zorin OS. My only questions are a) is it viable to install it as a portable OS on a flash drive, and b) is there a way to somewhat replicate the look and feel of Elementary? I think the design language of Zorin is on the same par as Elementary, but I still prefer a Mac based UI more than Windows (ironic, considering I've used windows 10 more than any other operating system). I assume with the initial customizability settings (which are awesome, by the way) it is possible to some degree. Regardless, any help would be appreciated.

      Me pasa igual.

    as an almost-seasoned linux user, i would recommend to use Linux Mint (Debian Edition), some people just want OS that works and no need to bother to fix anything, but when it comes to looks , i would say zorin does better in comparison. Elementary does looks good, but its true pretty hard to make it works out of the box, they are too focused to be like MacOS that the way they handled is almost feels like how a company would design their OS with the limitation of customization and apps

    Just my personal opinion based on my own experiences. I'll tell you upfront that I'm only fairly competent tech wise :) I installed both onto actual hardware. I've always liked Zorin and how it works. Elementary 'might' work better, visually at least, for someone coming over from Mac. Zorin will install NVIDIA drivers if you're running a NVIDIA GPU, Elementary won't. And, trying to install NVIDIA drivers on Elementary can lead to problems... as I found out :) I personally found the Zorin software store took forever to open compared to Elementary, even after I'd set Elementary up for flatpaks to be included. Zorin doesn't include 'all' flatpaks either, just the ones it prefers. Zorin also has a much better solution for people who have .exe apps they just can't do without. I could happily work with either but Zorin has a more broad-minded appeal, to me anyway. But, I'd still choose Mint over Zorin as a newbie :)

    Elementary shot themselves in both feet and knees. It is sad that this is will be a Linux's first impression for a new user. With that being said they try Elementary and get a bad feeling from it and will not even try another Linux Distro because of the awful experience... I agree with ya Tom!

    Tom,
    I understand the need for different distro’s but, do we really need SOOOOO many to choose from? How many are very similar to each other and the major difference comes down to a great support team?
    That would be a great video, compare a handful of distributions that are very similar, show how they basically mirror each other and recommend one distribution based on longevity and rock solid support.

    • @justthebeginning1448
      @justthebeginning1448 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @smarfbag8714
      @smarfbag8714 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think people should just recommend different distros for different type of people. Gamers tend to go to arch systems and people who are fairly new and just want a system that is stable and just works goes to the ubuntu side.

    • @fredashay
      @fredashay 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, so many distros is confusing. But Linux is FOSS, so there's no central authority to tell someone they can't make their own distro. Hence we have a ton of distros.
      The only way to limit the number of distros would be to make Linux proprietary, and I don't want that. Do you?

    • @IBDman
      @IBDman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fredashay No! Not at all, I just wish developers wouldn’t just turn out distributions for the sake of small differences. But, that’s a losing battle, I will just worry about myself and use what I want without worrying about all the others. Linux is so customizable you could make a lot of changes yourself and make it seem like a new distro, if you get bored that is. Linux is fun, God bless the FOSS community!

    Quick answer : Zorin. With a familiar look and feel, it doesn't try push their own stuff more than other apps or tools. While Elementary decided to disable by default any app that is not from their own repos. Even flatpaks Aren't available by default. That poor decision makes virtually every app unavailable, and a beginner will never know where to search.
    They should reconsider How they treat beginners and how they see non-elementary apps. Marking these as untrusted just because they didn't make it, is a lack of respect for other teams for me.

    • @jpsalis
      @jpsalis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ugly? n a h
      I mean, it's very middle-of-the-road. It's far better than a lot of DE's out there IMO. I kinda like the aesthetic, especially with the new rounded title bar they've added in 20.3 (I think). It's really consistent, everything looks like it belongs. I'm super happy with it on my old laptop. I've found that it's very functional without losing out on much of that tasty styling.
      I think Cinnamon looks better than even vanilla KDE Plasma. Personally I would happily recommend it or Zorin for a first-time user, especially a windows user. Pop looks promising, but looks like information overload waiting to happen for a new Linux user. I could see myself using it though.

    I agreed with you Zorin OS is the best choice of the two. I wasn't buying into paying for an OS that does not allow me to install basic office software. The Linux Experiment guy thinks that elementary os is a great Linux distro. I think not, and you just confirmed my suspicions.

    Just google stuck on boot logo after install and you will not even try this trashy OS, never had an issue with ubuntu

    Mint is better than Zorin. I have tried Zorin several times and each time a update made it unusable. Mint is more stable and just as easy to use.

    Elementary OS is made so you can click around gasping at how "beautiful" it is... it takes your mind off cropping photos and such nonsense.

      Eh, I feel like if you are coming from windows, you will feel more accustomed to zorin. Pop os and its DE makes it feel like you are using an ipad in terms of the layout of things. To me it along with fedora are the best gnome environments. Just might be weird to use at first for beginners

      For me latest pop was only problems. Update wud cease to work frequently. It broke system twice... Zorin is rock solid.
