    I have a 1980 oldsmobile delta 88 2door coupe and it had the half vintly top in the back of the car.Replaced it twice after the factory top which was much stronger than the new ones I purchased went bad.I was lucky, not hardly any rust on that part of the top when I took off the last one.Then I just sanded primed the top and painted it the color the vinyl top was ,Autumn maple red.,Then black later on..Look pretty good.

    Make sure you paint the roof before you put a new top on.. Helps prevent further rusting...

      Do you just use base coat or does it need clear coat as well?

    • @VaibFormers
      @VaibFormers ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffdecker8490 all you need to do is spray base coat with hardener since the the only purpose of clear coat is for shine and uv light protection so the base doesn’t get damage, but if you’re just putting vinyl on top of it, it’s safe to say just spray base coat with hardener.

    • @jeffdecker8490

      @@VaibFormers thx for the info. Was curious if clear coat added any extra moisture protection but guessing base shouldn't let moisture permeate through to primer then to metal. Make sense an appreciate it. Was just working on car today getting roof prepped and started on sanding.

  • @caddi70
    @caddi70 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It all depends how good it was prepped in the first place and how long it sits outside. I have a 70 Impala and there was barely any rust at all under mine and I plan on redoing it

      If the car is going to be kept in the garage all of its life and never driven in the rain it will not rot out,but most people who own a car want to drive it,not sit in the garage and look at it.
      I personally hate the way vinyl roofs look and I hate what they do to the metal of the car

    I am redoing one and I have almost the same problems a little bit less rusted because the area where I live is less humid what I am going to do since the surface is not going to be exposed it's always going to have vinyl I am going to put a coat of urethane this will do two things seal and protect the roof of the car and this will also allow the adhesive to adhere better

  • @packard5682
    @packard5682 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Like with anything that is not taken proper care of, it weathers and things like this can happen. I have replaced many vinyl tops over the years and most that were properly stored and taken care of are in good condition. If you don't have a garage available to store it out of the sun and weather don't purchase it. Just like convertibles these are not cars for everyone to own. They require attention and not everyone is willing to do that.

  • @CaptainFALKEN
    @CaptainFALKEN 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great information. Might as well take off the vinyl top on the 68 goat. Taking the car from Michigan to Alabama so it should be way more free of immediate rust or surface rust

    Majority of cars with vinyl tops are pushing 40- 50 years old and aren't driven in rain and snow anymore. Top rust shouldn't be an issue.

  • @Suddenlyits1960
    @Suddenlyits1960 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I HATE vinyl roofs. They look stupid (the car ISNT a convertible and convertibles look hideous with the top up anyway) and the rust the hell out of the roof. It amazes me that people will pull a vinyl roof off of a car and see the immense amount of damage that it’s caused go through all the effort of repairing it and then put another damn vinyl roof back on again.
    What the hell is wrong with you guys? Paint the roof like the rest of the car. There’s a reason cars didn’t have vinyl roofs in the 50’s and why they don’t have them now.

    Fuck, I'm installing one on a Mark Five Lincoln. The only difference is, I'm making this one from scratch. Usually I install the ready made tops but this time I decided to make it from scratch. Unfortunately, I forgot to crown the front and rear part of the top and that proved to be a disaster. I also used 1/4 inch closed cell foam instead of the 1/8th. ...lol...lol... Vinyl tops are a pain in the ass. You have to rip the rear part of the interior out just to get to the opera windows and that urethane goo they line the channel with looks awesome when you get it on your hands. That shit makes a mess. This one is a 72. I heard they're worth more. This guy that owns this car is a nice guy and he's paying me good money so I'm gonna do this motherfucker over again. This is however the last one. These Lincoln's are the land sharks of the seventies. Ugly as fuck and they get terrible gas mileage. Nothing on these cars is easy to work on. If you keep your car protected from the elements, this usually doesn't happen. But then who the fuck does that? My other problem was the fact that it got really cold in the shop and vinyl is hard to manipulate if the room is too cold, even with a heat gun, and of course I'm old now and have more difficulty pulling. It's funny, when my pop died I was stuck with three of these Lincoln's. I gave one to my buddy for watching my crop and then traded the other two for a pound of kill-kill and never looked back. I couldn't give these cars away. Nobody wanted them. These Lincoln's are nothing more than an aerodynamic brick. Two more cups of coffee and I'm going back in. I hate this car. GRRRRRRRRRR......
