My mobility is decreasing, and I am on the journey to get a new chair. I will hopefully be able to load it over top of my self like you do instead of loading it into my trunk as I can no longer ambulate safely to the front of my car. I have been watching videos on car transfers to get some more ideas as I am small and so the chair seems unwieldy at the moment. So far I have just trialed a new chair and so I haven’t had long to practice. Watching you has given me some ideas and has also given me hope that with some determination I can make this work

That's brilliant!!! Love how you notched the slide board!! And I love that piece that protects your car with a hook to make sure the hair doesn't roll away and stay in position!!

Hi, im a C5 C6 incomplete Quad and i have a few questions. Where can i get a sliding board, wheel locks and that leather piece with the hook at the edge of the door? i have a car with an expensive paint job and my chair tends to move outwards when i transfer out of the car. Great video thanks!
Hi 915power, thanks for your questions. I found a few different people to make my adaptations up as they are made to suit my needs. For the slide board I went to a local handyman who made it out of plywood and glued laminex to each side. The cutout section that fits around the wheel was done by getting a piece of cardboard and cut to the shape of the wheel then used as a template for the slide board.The wheel locks are standard wheelchair brakes I got from GMS Rehabilitation. These can be sourced from most wheelchair suppliers as they would have similar types for their chairs. I'd check out your wheelchair supplier first.The leather protection flap I had made up by a Saddle Maker. I gave them the size and they made it up. Any leather worker that has an industrial sewing machine for leather can do it. To attach it, on the top edge I have a strip Velcro sewn and on the plastic sill of my car I have glued another strip of Velcro. My dad made the metal hook, but any person who is handy could bend a piece of 4mm steel rod to the required shape to fit your wheelchair tube. I attached it to the leather flap by a loop.An occupational therapist would be able to get these made for you, or even rehab centres at hospitals can make equipment for the public. If you are in Victoria, Australia a volunteer organisation called Solve can also make equipment for people with disabilities. They volunteer their time and you pay for the materials.For many of my modifications on equipment I have an engineer who makes and adapts things as I need although it can get expensive.Hope this helps.

Hi Juan, sorry for taking so long to get back to you.Regarding your questions, my answers are as follows:1) I assume the "hoops" are what I call "push rims" on my wheels. My pushrims (Hoops) are steel with a rubber coating for grip. I had these supplied by GMS Rehabilitation in Australia www.gmsrehab.com/ however I'm sure there are other suppliers around the world that can provide them.2) My push gloves are made up by an Occupational Therapist at the spinal rehab centre at a hospital. They are made from leather with thin rubber patched sewn to the palm which provides grip on the pushrims and on the slide board when I transfer out of my wheelchair.3) I'm not sure what your question is? I will assume you are asking whether my clothes and seats in my car get dirty from my wheels. This is a problem if the ground is wet or muddy when trying to get into the car. If it is wet/muddy then I have a towel that I put across my lap so my pants and top don't get dirty from my wheels. The seats in my car are leather so I don't worry if they get dirty. They can always be cleaned.Hope this helps.

Hi Juan, I get the rubber from the spinal centre that makes the gloves for me. If you went to a rubber supplier I'm sure they would have some type of rubber that is thin around 3mm, malleable and grippy. A boot maker could sew the rubber onto a pair of gloves. Cheers

Hi Penn, thanks for your message. I'm finding it harder the older I get. Twenty five years ago when I worked out how to transfer there weren't any vans available in Australia, so I didn't have any choice. In the last few years they have become quite common, which is fantastic getting many more people with disabilities driving and giving them independence. I am considering the van option now as I can see that it will make my life easier in particular as I get older. Thanks Dave
I think that you should see if an accessible car or van an elec wheelchair could be purchased for you something that has a dette seat which rotates making transfer so much easier
Thanks Aoife, I've been transferring this way for 26 years and am very used to doing it this way, but as with age I am looking at the van to drive behind the wheel. I'm not sure what a dette seat is?

I have a question about the video. Are you wearing something to protect your butt like a diaper? I used a transfer board two years ago to practice transfer, and I got hurt my butt, so I haven't tried it since then because I'm afraid to use the transfer board.
Hi, Sorry to hear you damaged your skin. No I don't have any protection apart from my jeans and underwear. I've never had any problems. The more you practice the better you get at sliding your but which minimises the risk of hurting your skin. At times I may have sat on the edge of the board and got a small scratch, but nothing that was ever a concern. It may be worth trying again and modifying how you do it slightly to see if your skin handles it. It is worth pursuing as it gives your another level of independence. Good luck with it. Cheers
My chair is similar to the TiLite ZR but it is an old design around 6 years. It is full titanium frame making it very light. The chair weighs around 10 kg without the cushion and I'm 6 foot 4 inches tall.
Guys to make your lives a little easier an electronic chair and hoist that can lift the chair or a ramp as i saw via youtube an american quadriplegic guy has a van and ramp so maybe look into it
I think hoists and electric chairs are great if you need them to increase your independence, but [personally I like to do as much as I can while I still can and will use them when I really need to. Cheers

You should consider D's Locks to help lock & unlock much quicker & Quad Release Pins to easier remove your wheels. I've used both & it's great

props im c5 function c7 and i just minivan it. things seem like they could get risky when you are in the car and spinning the chair around

Dave Jacka it's a rotating seat basically it swivels to aide movement or transfer of people with mobility issues
