    Hola!

    Well done brother, I am a T3/T4 Paraplegic 30 years now I am now 47 and for years never put any breaks on until last year when the chair roll out from under me leaving me sat on the floor. this happened as now my shoulders have got the beginnings of arthritis. SO Please never be tempted to get in with the breaks off as you will regret it. But be lucky mate Daron.

    My 5 year old son was curious on how paralyzed people get in and out of cars. This was very educational for him. He says "Thank you so much for your video!"

    I love watching your videos so I can help my 2 year old son learn how to do certain things that he will need to know as he gets older, things that I won't know how to teach him. He was born with spina bifida L3-S5, complete paralysis below his knees. He is already mastering controlling his chair but I know there are so many other things he will need to learn. Thank you for your videos!

      Hey Kyle, I'm the mom of a son who is a T5 SCI. His motorcycle accident happened June 2018 at 32 yrs old. It's been difficult for him to accept. I'm watching Brian's videos to get ideas, & I told my son about it too. His doesn't want to drive yet. Thinks he needs more core strength.

    Thank you so much for posting this. I have just bought a Jaguar XK-R and your video will enable me to get my wheelchair in to the car. I particularly noticed the aspect of getting the fame across your torso; that will make things much easier for me. Really terrific video, thank you to you and to your camera woman - great work.

    Thanks for posting this. I'm an author and wanted to see how a person gets in and out of a car so that I can portray it accurately in a book I'm writing. I have a friend who sometimes uses a wheelchair but she also has prosthetics so her situation is a little different.

  • @SmartAceW0LF
    @SmartAceW0LF 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Outstanding blackpearlv6! Aside from your having overcome these obstacles, I commend you for having the strength of will to share it with others. I also am a paraplegic with very similar interests as you. As for riding though, I elected way back when I had my injury to build a trike. I can assure you that in 82 and 83 there was virtually no one on the planet to speak with about accomplishing that feat. Still, I always yearned for the leaning experience of a regular bike. Continued...

  • @SmartAceW0LF
    @SmartAceW0LF 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was also impressed with the outrigger you built for your bike too. Also, like you, I drive a coupe (Menox-equipped 97 CL3.0) (Sweet setup). I use the Quickie revolution folding chair. It being discontinued is what drove me to your site actually. I wanted to see how easily the rigid frames effect transfer in a coupe. Doesn't matter if it takes a week to transfer! When folks watch me get in my ride, I always finish with saying, "Mini-Van is just not me!" Keep the rubber side down my friend!

  • @fubarmofo6969
    @fubarmofo6969 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don’t lock my brakes but it’s a good idea as I’ve almost fell outta my car before cuz I have bad spasms and have had my chair roll back as I’m trying to get in and almost fell to the ground lol
    For me it’s easier to transfer if I put my right leg into the car first then transfer over into the car then put my left leg in. For me it seems a lot easier getting in if u have a leg in first. It kind of gives u more support too since u have the tension of your leg stretched out.
    Nice ride btw and your wife has some beautiful legs on her! Lucky man

  • @ParalyzedLiving
    @ParalyzedLiving  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's actually an automatic transmission...I just installed a shift boot so it looks like a manual. They do make a hand clutch called a "duck bill" that is basically a shift knob with a lever on the front.

  • @ParalyzedLiving
    @ParalyzedLiving  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Klfalter No, the trunk on this car is extremely small. If I am riding with someone who is used to taking apart the chair, they will put the wheels and seat cushion in the trunk and the chair frame in the back seat.

  • @ParalyzedLiving
    @ParalyzedLiving  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Actually, I chose the car before realizing how many "accessible" features it has. The power seat switches next to the console, the folding seat release on the back of the seat instead of on the side, the memory seats, the smart ignition key, bluetooth,etc. I have been to several auto shows recently and have not found a car on the market that is as wheelchair friendly as this one...and it looks bad ass. :) My only gripe is the gas mileage...17mpg city.

  • @kellysweetman6070
    @kellysweetman6070 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My next chair is going to be a rigid frame. I am sure it's going to make getting the chair into my car easier. My latest car is a 1996 Mark VIII. The seats have memory and an auto glide feature. I think that's going to be a big help in having the extra room to put the chair into the backseat. Thanks for your video.

  • @madras1234
    @madras1234 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just something I do - always put the seatbelt on my chair when it's on the passenger seat. Why? Well, imagine what would happen in an impact with all that metalwork flying around.
    I also wear my seatbelt while I disassemble / reassemble my chair as it helps with stability and stops me falling.
    I drive a 5 Series with memory seats and they are close to essential.

  • @ParalyzedLiving
    @ParalyzedLiving  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrNillows Awesome! Don't worry, it will be hard at first but you will get the hang of it. And its WAY BETTER THAN A MINIVAN! Hopefully you have a lightweight chair. As a C5/C6, I'm not sure how much grip you have. If you have a solid backrest, you may want to take that off too to lighten the load. How's you bicep control?

    Yea, I've always been into cars...as long as I can remember. I can't work on them as well as I used to but I can still do some stuff. I changed my brakes and rotors by myself a few months back.. Hardest part was mounting the wheels back on since all I have is arm and shoulder strength and no core or back muscles.

      I became a T 11 incomplete para 2 years ago at 63. I remember those days at rehab when they would have you practicing transfers in-and-out of some random car. @frankaguilo A folding chair with wheels and backrest would be very bulky. I doubt it could ever fit in the back seat even if I wanted it to. Folding chairs are also heavier because they have more parts and are less durable. At this point, this transfer is cake with this current chair.

  • @141sharon270

    I have been looking for a 2 door car for couple years, 4 door cars like my ford Fiesta is so difficult because of the much smaller doorway. The doors on 2 door car are much bigger, like this guy has. UK cars are too small for wheelchair users, I have to slide seat right back and wind the recliner as far back as it will go, I even have to watch my waist line otherwise I wouldn't have enough room to get it past me. It takes me about 15 minutes. I bought the car new in 2015 and I only done about 200 miles total. I'm in mid 70's now and always had a car since I was 17 for the convenience and quickness. I think it's better to have a car and not need it than to need it and not have it.

    Isn't it just faster to take a folding frame chair and lift it over your head into the back seat? Although the rigid frame chairs are much lighter it just seems like such a hassle to have to take the wheels off. I know these rigid frames are the popular way to do transfers now but it just seems like the process is more time consuming than a folding frame.

      Hi Mike. Check out TiLite Wheelchairs. Mine is the ZR. The ZRa or the TRa (adjustable versions) are a great option though for newly injured people.

    You make it look so easy, but I would imagine it’s a real pain in the ass it was pouring rain outside, or snowing, does your car have any sort of canopy you can put over the driver side so you don’t get soaking wet when it’s pouring rain?
