This version was a revelation when I first discovered it. It was like opening the fridge and finding a beer you didn't think you had. The same kind of feeling :-)
I had this happen recently. I had pilsner but don't care for it unless I'm desperately thirsty after a hard day of work. I moved a bottle of water and one of Gatorade and low and behold, there was a bottle of Shiner Bohemian Black Lager. It was nearly as good as sex. And like sex, it's not good cold.
Oh, well said, old chap. I always thought the original was too short. I found a CD of this remix in 1989 at a record fair in San Angelo, Texas. I bought it, even though I didn't yet own a CD player. People were still buying cassettes in 1989.
Blessings to you, Shane. You've brought around a lot of people from all walks of life no matter where they hail, their heritage, and disposition. We won't forget you.
Anyone who doesn't know about bluegrass's derivation from Celtic country music should give this a listen. Though this is new, it's clearly in the tradition.
I've loved this song for 25+ years, but this is the FIRST time that I've heard THIS VERSION. It is, in a word, AWESOME. THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT, SWYNDONBYF!!!!
First time I made my daughter listen to this song she was about 12. I asked her what she thought after and she said "I kinda wanna get drunk and fight..." God Bless the Child...not bad for a 4th gen bog trotter. I couldn't have been prouder. Kirsty at 3:40 like an angel makes me tear up a bit...still can't make it through "FTofNY" without full on crying...
SWYNDONBYF. Thanks for being the one who has shared and introduced so many to the Pogues for so so many years . Your a good soul All the best for you always
Wow... 3:28 to 3:44 is amazing. Not too shabby for a drunkard and his mates, and I mean that in the nicest possible way because the Pogues are one of my favorite bands! :D
If I should fall from grace with god Where no doctor can relieve me If I'm buried 'neath the sod But the angels won't receive me Let me go, boys Let me go, boys Let me go down in the mud Where the rivers all run dry This land was always ours Was the proud land of our fathers It belongs to us and them Not to any of the others Let them go, boys Let them go, boys Let them go down in the mud Where the rivers all run dry
i hate most commercials and their music but this is the exception. i wouldve never heard of this great group if it hadnt have been for that dumb commercial.
@bossyboo32 I'm not saying you can't interpret the lyrics how you want, or that it's even a big deal, but it's definitely referring to the continuous oppression from invaders Ireland suffered throughout their history.
@peacefrog1916 who cares? they're 2nd generation irish kids i believe. its like, if you're parents are african but you move to america and live in a neighborhood or area where there are alot of african immigrants like your parents and other kids who have african parents. you retain alot of that culture and identify with it. then your family moves back to or visits africa routinely, you're pretty much african.
Some say there is a recurring reference in old poems to drowning men (like those who fell or were pushed off a ship) resurfacing three times before going under for good. As far as I know its just a guess.
Thank you for your Pogues uploads. They are one of my fav bands. Original Pogues, tits of Soho. First time i heard them in 88 i was like "who the#:::ck is this! Rum sodomy and the lash( it's the Eng navy saying). Ha
obvious answer is that it sounded cool. but if you want a deeper answer... the kid were the underdogs and a irish rebel song sounded like a perfect anthem for them.

You have described it perfectly. Fair play. I had the same experience recently when i added the 12" single to my collection.

Beautiful
Yes! I absolutely love this version and the instrumental interlude is the perfect time to do a little toe tappin and have a drink
Blessings to you, Shane. You've brought around a lot of people from all walks of life no matter where they hail, their heritage, and disposition. We won't forget you.
He spoke for the dispossessed.
If this isn't played at my funeral, certain relatives of mine are getting seriously haunted.
Spookd
init
Body of an American
...for my funeral (not that I'm going to die, ever, but if did die in some imaginary world where I'm mortal).
Pedro Wiegmann no funeral for me. I'm having a wake!
Calvin Maynard Aye. This is the Irish way...and I really like that. It's a good way. The song 'Body of an American' is made for a whiskey soaked wake.
i love the chick voice that comes out in this version in the chorus as well, adds a lotta depth
choirs in that song are magical
This land was always ours
Twas the proud land of our fathers
It belongs to us and them
Not to any of the others
Beautiful!
Tell that to Kilburn.
I'll stand on his coffee table.
Anyone who doesn't know about bluegrass's derivation from Celtic country music should give this a listen. Though this is new, it's clearly in the tradition.
Every year around this time, I listen to this song.
Oh shit, it's that time again! YEEEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!
"May you never go to hell, but may you always be on your way!"
The Pogues will always be best!
R.I.P To ma Da George Masson! This was his song! Love you always ♥
I'm a second generation Irish American living in rural Minnesota missing my fam back in New York. This brings back good memories

Perfect. The harmonization is sublime.
If there's anything better than this, I haven't dreamt it.
I just saw the car commercial with this song playing. I like the commercial, had to look up the song. Funny that I found it. Great song!
I looked it up around the same time. Summer of 2011.
Such a magnificently buttoned-up sound considering the many different instruments and the rhythm complexity.

Who gives a fuck about your daughter?
SWYNDONBYF. Thanks for being the one who has shared and introduced so many to the Pogues for so so many years . Your a good soul All the best for you always

This is the first time I've ever heard this version, it's fucken brilliant.
Wow... 3:28 to 3:44 is amazing. Not too shabby for a drunkard and his mates, and I mean that in the nicest possible way because the Pogues are one of my favorite bands! :D

If I should fall from grace with god
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I'm buried 'neath the sod
But the angels won't receive me
Let me go, boys
Let me go, boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry This land was always ours
Was the proud land of our fathers
It belongs to us and them
Not to any of the others
Let them go, boys
Let them go, boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
Go boys

Is that Kirsty MacColl singing in the chorus? I'm pretty sure that's her...
...and you are pretty right
@Ca1861 Really beautiful state =) I live there

I agree. And the overall echo. But what's with the occasional strange extremely loud bass sound... ?
