    Fun fact: a lot of video games use similar principles as the enchroma glasses for their colorblind modes. They also pretty much universally get shit from colorblind people because of how poorly thought out the idea is and how badly it's implemented in nearly every case.

    31:46 the crazy thing is that other then curing color blindness your idea of sunglasses that lets you see animegirls instead of real people could actually work. It wouldn't be normal glasses, instead it would be a camera and display setup. If you wanted to be real fancy you could even do it the way my cars rear view mirror works. With a semi transparent display mounted in front of the mirror that only gets activated when tilting the mirror. There are already filters that let you look like you're drawn so integrating it into sunglasses should be possible. The technology at least does exist

    Well they aren't lying in their text, 3x0=0 and 5x0=0 so it is technically "possible" to get a 3x to 5x improvement, because that kind of improvement won't actually make a difference in the tier 3 case. I'd buy the glasses because the red looks kind of cool, but now I can't buy them because people will think I'm an idiot for buying fake colorblind glasses.

  • @Jobocan.
    @Jobocan. 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    I was wondering how the science worked for those glasses, because it sounds wild that you could change how the brain itself processes colors in general, just by putting something in front of the eyes (with the advertising directly showing monochromia being cured by the glasses). Turns out it doesn't because it's clearly nonsense.

    Surgery to repair the eye wouldn’t even work to fix the blindness. The brain learns to interpret visual signals when you’re still little. As an adult, even if you went in and perfectly fixed their retina and ocular nerve, they would still have their blindness because the brain never learned to actually interpret those signals at the critical period in their youth. You can’t just have functioning structures. Your brain has to know what to do with the sensory info coming from those structures.

    eyes are weird anyways if i remember correctly the immune system doesn't really know the eyes exist and if it does find out it destroys them but they are Immunologically privileged

    • @Spectacular_Insanity
      @Spectacular_Insanity 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And your eyes and brain are weird in general.

    • @boanoah6362
      @boanoah6362 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup, your eyeballs are essentially external just sunken into your skull and wrapped in skin flaps, but they're protected by being constantly coated in salt water. If your immune system detects your eyeballs they get flooded with white blood cells which destroys your ability to see, you need basically clear fluids for sight to function.
      By their very nature an immune response fucks up your eyes, so a natural body lifehack is to just pretend they're not part of the system...
      Same sort of way your brain fucks with what you see to make it seem seemless.

    • @lickumdry6016
      @lickumdry6016 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      What you're talking about is ocular immune privilege. It's not really right to say the immune system is unaware of your eyes but as it's currently understood (which is admittedly still early and plenty of parts have holes in them) the eyes effectively have their own "override" to prevent typical inflammation responses and other issues to preserve vision this applies to the area cushioning the eye and the eye itself. This is helpful because due to the eye's constantly being exposed to things that typically cause inflammation and other immune responses like debris it helps stop inflammation from occurring that would damage sight and make it significantly harder to navigate and our bodies are apparently aware (aware in the evolutionary way as in not aware but adapted overtime) of this issue and which is likely why the eyes and cushioned area around the sockets will rarely or at all become inflamed.

    Even the idea of a “peer reviewed” study is a misnomer. More often than not, it simply means having a colleague in your field sign their name as having “reviewed” the study without doing so since it takes a lot of time to actually review and verify the validity of a studies methodology, data, etc and all of that would be unpaid labour. It’s why there’s been a surge of fraudulent studies being discovered from a bunch of universities and their staff cause this system of checks and balances for credibility in studies has been ignored and abused for decades.

    Very interesting to see you react to the academia parts of the video especially! The first study referenced in the video was not even peer reviewed, as you mentioned, but it's pretty common to have one or more of the authors try to commercialize what a part of a study, especially if it's a system that can be adapted. The filter there is the peer review process, and even then, there are different quality tiered publications that a paper can appear in, so that's another consideration. The other part is that you are supposed to disclose any CoI to the university, the other study, clearly said that the glasses do nothing, obviously. Overall, great investigation, and nice video.

    OK so going off one thing that guy said about differentiating between green and red traffic lights ... what if you actually perceive each of those colours as the opposite? To me, the red traffic lights actually look green, and the green look red. It took a teacher in my primary school years who noticed this helping me to recognise and adapt what was going on so now I know when I see those colours I automatically think the reverse.

And this lady got into a car accident yada yada got blinded and has to use cameras over her eyes (or something like that) connected directly to her the back of her skull and into her brain bypassing what was damaged from the crash allowing her to see. and its got me thinking if it was real could that be done though the lengthy process she seemed to go to see doesn't seem worth for being color blind. just a random thought from a non-professional.. }---{sword>

He was like a grumpy old man type grandfather and I guess their were hoping they would get this huge reaction for their video. They set up all the balloons and surprised him withe the glasses. Dude put on the glasses and didn't react at all. And they were pointing at balloons and asking him about the colors just thinking he wasn't paying attention or something. He just shrugged and basically went about his day doing stuff. Was the only realistic video I saw of these glasses.

    Anime girl glasses could actually become a thing pretty soon(TM). All it would take is some augmented reality glasses using some form of real time generative AI. So with that said, the main limiting factor right now preventing us from doing this... is likely processing power to actually be able to generate it in real time.

    1:03:03. Nah the balloons were labeled the wrong color, not the right color. It was so the kid could remember what color he was supposed to say he thought they were before putting on the glasses. Assuming the kid was actually colorblind, he could probably still get most if not all of the colors right, so they had him get them completely wrong on purpose.

I don't know the corresponding schools for usa but we have the lowest form of school that you can end in wich is Hauptschule and ends after year 9, the middle form of school wich is Realschule and ends after year 10 (that is the one i went to) and then there is the highest form of school befor universitys wich is the Gymnasium wich ends after either 12 or 13 years (it changed a couple of times so i'm not certain wich it currently is). Since i only went to the Realschule i can't go study but we still learned in relatively high detail about how eyes and colourvision works in humans

    I can sort of see the concept that Enchroma was aiming for, it's like fixing a lazy eye if I'm understanding their stated goal, which on paper could theoretically work. By forcing the eyes to adapt you can make some of the stuff going on in your eyes work better, but I don't know if there's any research or even a process of testing to see if it can improve cone sensitivity...
    So on paper yeah I can see what they're trying to do but the fact that like 95% of scientists they approached didn't think it would work also says to me it just straight up doesn't work.

    I have slight color blindness, but in the yellow spectrum in my left eye. But my right eye sees colors more vividly as in the bright highlighter or hot colors. Which when you combine both eyes, causes a double vision or overlapping effect. I often see Silhouettes or after images sometimes when watching television or screens. Especially with the lights off.
    I sometimes wear red and blue lens 3D glasses and it helps this problem. I look weird in public when your glasses is one blue lens and one red lens. But what's more important scene correctly, or looking weird for wearing glasses?

    I can imagine a system like this could be made in a way it works, since from what I heard if you used glasses that turned everything upside down your brain would adapt in around a week, but...
    IF it had a chance to work, it would not be like this.
    It would be something like those 3d movie glasses, the modern ones that switch quickly between two scenes not the red and blue ones, but instead of switching between two images it would be switching between tinted and not-tinted, and thus the brain could POSSIBLY "create" the actual color in-between.
    Basically, we do the way Alana suggested, by making the brain trick itself, by making the images switch between the original color and the tinted ones. Kinda like we do for... well, videos.
    That is not really that weird a concept. After all, "magenta" is not really a color, it is a "color" between red and blue that *should* be green but, well, the green detectors say it is not that either, so our brain creates magenta in its place.

    • @UTO7
      @UTO7 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The problem is that the receptors in the eye aren't picking up the distinction in those colors. It's like trying to train your brain to have night vision. Sure, you can definitely do some things to make it better, but you don't have cat eyes, the "hardware" just isn't there.

    • @masteryoraerasante
      @masteryoraerasante 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@UTO7 well, my idea is not so much for them to *actually* see more colors, but for the brain to have a way to identify them without losing the others like this cellophane method does. So it would not so much be letting you see colors but identify them... Which could still be useful, I guess, just nothing that would amaze people like these glasses claim to do.
      Although, there *are* "impossible colors" that our eyes can't really see, mostly "seen" by crossing our eyes and messing with our brains. Kyle Hill made a video about them. My ides would be taking advantage of that, but I wouldn't claim it would really work without testing of course.
