Nice truck! If you’re going to stretch the frame you are much better off to add to the rear of the the existing frame so you only have 1 splice. I also recommend step cutting the frame at the splice I know that it’s more hole drilling adding to the rear but the frame splice will be much stronger. As for the ac you should start looking for a junkyard cab with ac to rob the parts you need the hvac system is under the passengers seat and that cab was used on several models of trucks ie 4200, 4300, 5000 & 9300 etc. So finding factory ac components to do a conversion should be fairly easy. Just my 2 cents worth.

    • @haroldphipps3457
      @haroldphipps3457 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Have to agree. Adding to the rear of frame, then rolling axles back is more work, but the one splice is kinda worth it.
Actually not much advantage step cutting the frame, but if it makes you feel better, go ahead.
BTW, this stuff is what I do full time.

Food for thought DP. I have a small dump truck with an extended frame and had enough room to add a fuel transfer tank between the cab and dump body. Can't tell you how awesome it is to always have fuel transfer on another jobsite truck. Don't have to drive back to the yard to grab the pickup, back to the job to fuel the equipment and back to the yard again to swap out the pickup for the dump truck again. It is by far the most universal and convenient mod I have ever done.

Mikey... you are in luck!!! I have extensive experience with customizing trucks.
At age nine I got my first truck. My dad had picked it up at a farm auction. It was yellow and had an off road dump bed on it. It must have been a 1953 or so. It didn’t come with a title and I was too young to know what a VIN was... but the rust on it told me it was at least as old as I was.
Obviously it had been overloaded once or twice. The front axle was bent.
It didn’t have air conditioning. That was because no one else had it back then. But, it didn’t matter anyway because, it came without windows and a windshield.
I wasn’t too fond of the yeller color... and even at that young age... I thought rust was ugly. So, my first modification was a new paint job. My dad had several cans of spray paint in the well house. I selected black. I prepped it by hosing all the dirt off and parking it in the sun. Then, I moved it to the paint area. (Well actually, I parked it on the new oak fence boards my dad had bought for upgrading the pig pen.)
I didn’t know anything about masking paint... but hey, it was going to be all black any way! So, I commenced to squirting paint all over it. (I learned a lot about painting from that experience... paint too heavy and it runs... painting over wet paint runs will turn them into drips. Point the paint can the wrong direction will turn white Chuck Taylor high tops into Holsteins. And, that if you paint all over your dads new pig pen lumber; you’ll receive a quick swat on your keester.)
The next project was to fix the running gear. I had seen my dad straighten bent T-posts by laying them on a railroad tie and smacking them with a sledge hammer. I figured that would be overkill... plus, I couldn’t figure out how to get the bent axle off. So, I got in the tractor toolbox and grabbed dads monster screwdriver. Slipping it under the front bumper and prying on the axle worked good enough. It wasn’t perfectly straight but, at that age, I was only allowed to drive off road anyway!
The next modification was to put decals on it. I’d recently traded my neighbor a whistle for two stickers that he’d gotten out of a box of Cracker Jacks. (If I remember correctly they were King Cobras.). I put them on the doors... they were just big enough to cover the embossed brand name of the truck.
With that, I successfully restored my first Truck! The mistakes that I made were true learning experiences... The lessons that I learned have been invaluable in future projects.
Just one last piece of advice for now... don’t use paper decals. As soon as they get wet, you end up with just a black Tonka Truck!
Mikey, I be along for the rest of the build. Don’t be shy about making withdrawals from my vast fountain of knowledge. There’s an abundance of life lessons that I’m happy to share.

43 years ago i started driving a 1976, i think, Paystar 5000 with a six speed. It had the tag axel behind the tandems. It , the logging truck, had a Barko loader that could hold about a full cord of hardwood straight out and not drop a stick or fall down once i let go of the controls. I had the fan come loose and lost power steering on a corner and had to stand up to get enough torque to make the corner and not crash. Thank God it let loose when i was empty and that large steering wheel came in handy, pun intended. It also took out the radiator. Very large and spendy. It was very close to being alot worse. Another miracle from above, no doubt! It didn`t have air either, but in Wisconsin, no need. I smiled almost as much as you were when i saw it.

Mike, I own one of these trucks. You can get many interior pieces from other models of international trucks like the eagle, the Pepsi holder in the dash is originally the ashtray, but it vibrates so bad that soda will slosh out of the can, it is much smooth to put the soda holder on the floor between the seats. The heater box is under the passenger seat, my truck actually had the air conditioning condenser coil in there. My engine is a big cam 2, 270 horse, I turned it up to 450 horsepower with different fuel pump, injectors aftercooler and pulse exhaust manifold keeping the the original Turbo. Yours should be a big cam 4 could be one of several horsepower settings, with step timing, the step timing was a crossover to the Cummins n14 electronic engine. The step timing will eventually give you problems but it can be eliminated in part, by changing the injectors and reworking the fuel pump.
I'd recommend extending the frame adding to the rear of the truck, that way the frame will be reinforced with the frame liners of the Hendrickson suspension.
Best of luck with the new truck

When you started talking about removing the 5th wheel, I figured either you were going to do a dumper or a street legal 6x6 excavator.
With the bed, you might be able to get away with not extending it if you set it up like a Silage bed, where the end of the bed extends behind the frame so the hinge is 4+ feet in from the end. It wont be good if you plan on feeding a paver, but it will put less strain on the frame as some of the load will be cantilevered behind the hinge, which means less force is needed in the lift cylinder.

I loaded the excavator on the trailer on soft ground it’s sunk to the axles. The truck did not even hesitate pulled it right out with no effort. The truck is an 07 with 7000 miles on it. Unbelievable Power. It has the central tire inflation system. The tires are used on 3 yard cat wheel loader. The tire size is 16.00R20. My plan is to make the body dump. For the description below, ignore the fact that this Paystar has a driven steer axle, nothing about the steer axle is affected by the rear driver power divider.
As Mike said, the power divider "divides" the power equally between the first rear axle and the second rear axle (or more if equipped). Then the differential in each axle carrier further divides the power to the left and right wheels equally. So long as all 4 wheels have traction available, each wheel is putting power to the ground equally. If just 1 wheel loses traction, the other 3 wheels stop and the wheel that lost traction spins uselessly. When that happens you can say the spinning wheel is the only one being driven or "getting power".
Then, when you engage the power divider lock, you lock up the inter-axle differential and force power to be sent to both axle carriers. At that point the inter-axle differential loses its "differential capabilities and is now functioning as a driveshaft coupler instead. Even when both axles are locked together, if 1 wheel on each axle loses traction, you can end up with 2 spinning wheels and the vehicle still not move.
That is when it requires a differential lock in each axle carrier to guarantee that all 4 wheel positions will pull together in unison.

I must be an anomaly! I love trucks and tractors, just don’t understand the details of the guts like you do.hubby had a 1909 Brush Runabout when we met and married. It was restored, had won many trophies at AACA meetings(his dad was a judge). It had been his grandfather’s sales car in the 20s-40’s.

Id definitely change that exhaust to something like the Mack, That puppy dog sounds so awesome. If it's going to be an off road truck, you going to need beefy tires like the ones that are on it, and a winch for when a machine gets stuck or the Mack. Just never know when you might need it.

Antique truck guys use Vintage Air for A/C.
Vanderhaags Trucks and Parts has used dump bodies. And used lift axles.
Good idea to get DOT guy to help with axle spacing so you can haul the weight you need to. Sometimes putting extra wheelbase helps with interior or exterior bridge weight.
If you plan to haul a tri axle pintle hitch low boy, you need heavier tow plate than is on there now.
I like your company colors FWIW.

You forgot to mention double frame rail. That is a heck of a find, I'm guessing since it came from Colorado the previous guy figured jakes are a must. Definitely a solid project truck and I will apologize for the following wall of text. I like someone else's name suggestion of "Paydirt"
This is going to be an oddball suggestion, see if you can find a cable roll off hoist system or a hook lift system. I have used auxiliary hydraulics to power open gates on roll off boxes with a cable roll off system, so you can have your power tail gate. The plus side to the cable is you can use the hoist to yank a stuck machine or truck out with hydraulics instead of jerking with a chain, something I have done that a few times when I drove roll off for a few years in Wyoming.
I recently saw a video by lady out of Sweden: Razorkitten - Trucker Cassie here on TH-cam; use a hook lift truck and flatbed to haul an excavator on it, not something 120 sized but bigger than your mini cat. You can still yank trailers with either cable or hook lift, but given how much taller this truck is compared to your Chevy, dropping the box on the ground is likely the only way you will be able to load it with the smaller machines or if you have low over head clearance. Plus with a spare box, you could use it like a giant bucket to keep your gravel in, instead of dumping it on the street like the retaining wall job, which should save you time since you would have less to clean up.
I know its a more expensive option, but I think it would make the truck more versatile in the long run. I am going to buck the trend likely and suggest not putting diff locks in it, cause that will get you dozer stuck, which is when the only thing pulling you out is a dozer.

When you said it’s a Navy truck, I got an idea you’re gunna love! Navy uses blue for their famous color, do you see the correlation between you and blue?
I don’t mean just paint it blue, what I’m suggesting is to contact Pepsi headquarters, tell who you are & what you do, since you advise Pepsi on you channel. They will most likely sponsor you in a much bigger way, provide you a wrap for you truck, transporting it into a Pepsi billboard, of course you may become the PepsiMan of dirt! I’ve seen Red Bull sponsored vehicles on the road, and that a sight to see.

Mr. Dirt Perfect, it is fun to see a good guy get as excited as you did over the truck. Some people would look at it as a big hunk of old used metal.
The ability to Invision it as a greater thing is a great gift. 🙂 Yes there will be some frustrations 😬 on the project but, when you successfully complete the project the satisfaction is wonderful thing to experience.
    A side note.
I work with wood and salvage wood I picked up on the side of the road and make it into something useful and sometimes beautiful. My wife did not understand why I waste my time and money on my project.
One day I told her that she spends her time and money on makeup to transform something old to become pleasing to look at. Believe it or not she sort of understands my point of view, no more guestions.
Have a great 2021 to you and family and friends.
    Stay safe

Being a Navy truck, and with the circular blackout spray paint on the door, I would guess that it's an old Seabee truck. If that's the case I would name it for one of the characters from, "The Fighting Seabees", like Wedge or Natasha.
As far as the decals go, company name on door, " Dirt Perfect" on the bed sides and add a Seabee logo somewhere.
