I drove a similar 5x3 for several years. Later on I took a drive test for a company and they had an old Pete with a 4x4 they used for parades. They tried to play a joke on me by making me take my test in that pete. You should have seen the safety guys face when I drove it like I knew what I was doing LOL.
This guy is smooth as a baby's ass on those sticks. I started driving in the mid 70's in a 65 Pete with a 5x4. I was good once on them. I'm sure it wouldn't take long to get back in the saddle!
I've been driving for 43 years and thought I'd driven everything, but I've never seen a transmission like this ! To drive this one I'd have to go back to driving school all over. Bring it down to my place I'd love to give it a shot !
My boss taught me to drive his '69 Bulldog dump. It had a 5x4. His teaching technique was beautiful. He said"This stick does this, this stick does this, now get in there and do it!" The first time on the road with it was in traffic at 4:30 in the evening.
Watch his hands. It’s an old horseshoe 9 speed Starts in lo then goes through 1,2,3,4 on the bottom end Preselects hi Pulls it into 5th Moves the aux from OD Lo And splits 5th with LO-DI then 6th LO-DI 7th LO-DI 8th LO- DI- and finally in double over If you wanna get technical he’s shifting like a 16/17 speed. Splitting the top end....
This brings back memories. I drove a narrow hood KW about 20 years ago & it had this same setup with a 350; Cummins. I hauled logs and pulled lowbed. This setup came in handy with the D8 the boss owned for road building. When hauling logs I left the brownie (auxiliary) in under, used the main box till I got up to speed then used the brownie. Now I drive a 2018 KW hauling logs.
Great driving. Gotta shift those old trucks slow. I started in a 1973 300big cam Cummins and an old Eaton8 speed reverse pattern. I jumped in a new truck for harvest and grinded it for the first couple shifts cause you have to shift it so much quicker.
Definitely one smooth mammer jammer!!! This is way more entertaining than that goofball with the 3 sticks that are also air assist 🤣🤣!!! Old school cool brother!!!
Me and dad have been driving somewhere around 80 yrs combined So mom finds that 3 stick air shift video. And sends it to me. I told her that was a fake. The one id love to see is that 56 LJ MACK lowboy truck that dude needs a 3 stick shifting video. 9x4 is cool. Theres a couple heavy haulers down the road that have planatary drive axles big cats18 speeds with 4 speed augs. They pull a 20 axle Diamond.
That's funny right there. Hey bud you seen 4th anywhere. I always liked driving 2 man till you find out the other guy ain't got no skill. Then it's like Hey bud why dont you take a nap
I drove a DM800 10 wheeler 711 non turbo, quad box with panties on, pretty panties at that. Ran on a lot of projects around Philly during my summers off from college in the 80's
main box 9speed overdrive , auxillary box 4speed overdrive. rears might be 433s ..on tall rubber...What a great set up! be nice if the driver of this rig tell us something about it.
I d still run one if given the chance. 45000 lb ISO tankers on a 20ft container chassis that still runs 10x20 tube tires on 5 spoke Dayton rims. Is that old school enough for ya?
...I think I would run through the lower gears in the main box with the brownie in direct rather than over...hard on the brownie bearings running all that main box torque multiplication through the overdrive gear...good video...thanks for posting...
That guy is pretty damn smooth, it's been years since I've been in a two stick, I don't think I could do it right now. I run an 18 speed now( I know, probably the most popular tranny out there) I didn't really want to run it after 7 years in a Volvo with an automatic
So curious how many "modern truckers" from Debbie Dotson Trucking Driving School even would know what to do with a truck like this? Lol I bet she'd shit to see the forearm through the wheel to split the boxes... Like someone said earlier it's an lost art and I suppose it shows our age... Cool video
Aw heck, am I that old? Props to this guy, he made that rig sing nicely. I did that in my early 20's, it still looks cool letting go the wheel and both hands on the sticks.
Looks like I finally found the transmission used in all the car racing movies... they shift and shift and shift and shift... then they change scenes... and shift and shift and shift... lol
Learned to drive Thermadyne Mack Tryplex trans.this is the reason for the no shift law crossing R R tracks.get them hung up, underneath with a pry bar.do it once u won't do it twice.my dad had a Int.transtar Emeryville,501 gas burner 5.4 trans 10 22 rubber.big unit in 57.
In a 9 speed or 10 speed when the shift pattern is reversed between 4th and 5th (and also the top two gears) then it is an overdrive. The actual arrangement of gears on the counter shaft does not change between direct transmissions and overdrive transmissions (for the direct gear). It is the gear opposite of direct that changes. So in a normal 9 speed 4th gear is an underdrive gear and 5th is direct. In an overdrive transmission 4th gear goes from an underdrive gear to an overdrive gear, so the shift progression changes because you would not want to go from 3rd gear straight to an overdrive gear and then back to a direct gear. Wow!! I think I just confused myself!! Lol
Yes Sir. I have always said. " Real Truck Drivers take pictures of their Trucks" This vidio is of a Real Driver. Not one of the metro-sexual steering wheel jockey's that are taking selfies while behind the wheel. The Truck Drivers that I idolized as a stary eyed kid, those who influenced me to become a Driver. Most of them are covered by dirt. They are a Rare Breed now.
George Elliott Its a 9 speed main box. Has 5 low forward gears and 4 high. Lo is bottom left, 1 is middle up, 2 middle down, 3 bottom right, 4 up right. Pull range valve, 5 is up middle and carry on same as low range. 4 speed auxiliary box (the long stick with a bend) is the "overdrive" box. A 4 speed auxiliary box tends to have 2-3 overdrive gears and 1-2 underdrive gears. Once you get into high range, you can start splitting them into smaller ratios. Like a modern Eaton 13 speed.
what transmission model numbers are you running? i've got a divorced 4x4 and im considering swaping out the main 4 speed for a 9, it looks like the ratios match up pretty good between the 9 and 4 thanks great video
Looks to be a 9 over, should be the same ratios for the older transmissions regardless of tq rating. I was going to put a 4 speed behind my 9 speed direct in a truck and even with the 3.90 rear ends it was going to be very long legged, so keep that in mind.
It's sad the few snowflakes of the millennium generation that think they can drive do so with automatics. I learned to drive these as an apprentice mechanic before I could legally drive a car on the street. Learned how to drive, shift, hookup and drop and back a trailer with a foot of clearance by age 15.
SMOOTH !!! >LOOK AT HIS LEFT > LEG :: DID NOT MOVE !! > LEFT HAND GOS IN SIDE THE WHEEL >GETS HIS GEAR >RIGHT GET HIS AXEL !! OLD SCHOOL !! LOVE IT !! GREAT JOB >NOW THATS SHIFTING !!!( CAN ANY ONE TELL ME > HOW MANY GEARS IN ALL DO THIS TWIN HAVE ???REAR AND TRANY > LOOK AT IT GOOD ?????
My mother is so disappointed in me because I watch hours of this instead of porn...and by the way...slammin' a Big Gulp while slingin' around a pair of stixx...BIG STRAPPER stuff right there folks...Bee Eye Gee...B I G
Great ! drive it every day of week around North circular road London, but ok on long runs. better still have range change, splitter and then these 2 extra gearboxes, plus 2 speed rear axcel, manuaul engage turbos . must have forgoten about somthing
It's all about feel. No trucker once they learn the vehicle uses all the ratios in the transmission, you skip around depending on the load and conditions. The twin sticks just give you more options and unless you heavy haul ( and I am talking super heavy stuff ) you don't need them. This truck is overkill with gears.....and that makes it cool.

Your only supposed to use deep under to get moving, once you start progressing thru the gears you do not return to deep under , you go back to under. Progression usually goes like this. 1st deep under , 1st under , 1st direct , 1st over , 2nd under , 2nd direct , 2nd over , 3rd under , 3rd direct , 3rd over , 4th direct , 4th over , 5th direct , 5th over. Notice once you get past 3rd gear you don't use under anymore. You can but I have always heard not too, overlapping ratios. going from 3rd over to 4th under would actually be a downshift in most cases, or just the same overall ratio. 6 x 4 setups have a slightly different progression that I am not familiar with. I never drove a 6x4 only 5x4. I would love to have this 9 x 4 setup!!
Probably would make better drivers. Trucks with automatic transmissions sound like there's something missing, and there is. It's not the same sound as a driver shifting.
I’ve been trucking for three years what the fuck am I looking at? Why not just drive a 10 speed, 13 speed or 18 speed? Is this custom or do they come from the factory like that?

@@seventhson279 speed overdrive with a 4 speed auxiliary
Wow a 9 speed with a 4 speed auxiliary! Fantastic!

Must have been an adventure lol
How'd you do?

I find it interesting that these guys act like it's no big deal to shift like that. Very talented!
Good to see someone can shift without ripping the truck apart like most drivers these days!
You dant driver's anyone
Watch his hands.
It’s an old horseshoe 9 speed
Starts in lo then goes through
1,2,3,4 on the bottom end
Preselects hi
Pulls it into 5th
Moves the aux from OD
Lo
And splits 5th with LO-DI
then
6th LO-DI
7th LO-DI
8th LO- DI- and finally in double over
If you wanna get technical he’s shifting like a 16/17 speed. Splitting the top end....
Hmm! Oh my yes thanks for the explanation. 👍
That is a real "truck driver" my respects
This brings back memories. I drove a narrow hood KW about 20 years ago & it had this same setup with a 350; Cummins. I hauled logs and pulled lowbed. Nice to see a great job of driving a real main and auxiliary transmission. Not a pair of fake sticks switching air valves
Smooth as silk ... nicely done!
Definitely one smooth mammer jammer!!! This is way more entertaining than that goofball with the 3 sticks that are also air assist 🤣🤣!!! Old school cool brother!!!
I second that. Three sticks on a Road Ranger and all the posturing makes me ill.
Me and dad have been driving somewhere around 80 yrs combined
So mom finds that 3 stick air shift video. And sends it to me. I told her that was a fake.
The one id love to see is that 56 LJ MACK lowboy truck that dude needs a 3 stick shifting video.

Man that big CAT grunts like a train locomotive.
Good linkage I drove a twin stick where 4th on the aux was somewhere in the sleeper lol
Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!.......so true
That's funny right there. Hey bud you seen 4th anywhere. I always liked driving 2 man till you find out the other guy ain't got no skill. Then it's like Hey bud why dont you take a nap
Pura vieja escuela, old school real truck drivers. 💪💪😎
Twin shifting is a lost art...and this guy knows what it's all about. Very nice video!!!
Not lost at all---many of us know how very well just need some new trucks to come with them---haha--how we wish.
And you hear “I ain’t got no panties on” coming thru the CB. Now we’re truckin.
I bet nobody will never try to steal this because of how complex and complicated the shifting will definitely be
"I ain't got no panties on" classic 👍👍
Timothy Mcilwain
Listened for that🤣🤣
I drove a DM800 10 wheeler 711 non turbo, quad box with panties on, pretty panties at that. Ran on a lot of projects around Philly during my summers off from college in the 80's
Those were some smooth moves. Dr. Exlax would be proud!
best shifting ive seen on u tube yet nice ehhh
1:47 Through the wheel, Yeah baby.
Mine was a 13 with 3 speed aux double over I hauled cattle, that was the 70s early 80s
This man is really an ACE there a way to change the speeds it is just perfect
Thats some slick stickin son!!
I’ve driven truck for over 40 years, and I still don’t understand why all the shifting!
Mean, I would guess 15 and 4, and a V8 Cat, dude you badass, I drive the same but A model 8V92, different clockwork, smooth!
Jason Tengan I was guessing a 15 and a 5 aswell. He sure is !! I was guessing this was an old a model too
You sure tahrs a 15? Looks like a old 10 speed road ranger and either a 4 or 5 aux.
That big ol v8 cat sounds good man
main box 9speed overdrive , auxillary box 4speed overdrive. rears might be 433s ..on tall rubber...What a great set up! be nice if the driver of this rig tell us something about it.
Listen to those gears howl! Wonderful.
The driver of this rig ain’t gonna tell you nothing....he’s too busy eating!!!!!😂
Sad that the men that really know how it used to be are slowly being pushed out.
I d still run one if given the chance.
45000 lb ISO tankers on a 20ft container chassis that still runs 10x20 tube tires on 5 spoke Dayton rims. Is that old school enough for ya?
Two sticks is for 200hp
...I think I would run through the lower gears in the main box with the brownie in direct rather than over...hard on the brownie bearings running all that main box torque multiplication through the overdrive gear...good video...thanks for posting...
Wanna stop texting and driving? Put a two stick in everything
That guy is pretty damn smooth, it's been years since I've been in a two stick, I don't think I could do it right now. I run an 18 speed now( I know, probably the most popular tranny out there) I didn't really want to run it after 7 years in a Volvo with an automatic
not to bad on the boxes! I learned on 5x4 cummins 220
Me too 5&4 230Cummins Reo
Great entertainment - i added to my "truck favorites". (i like to save these kind of vids with V-8 diesel power) 3408 sounds great
Me too
So curious how many "modern truckers" from Debbie Dotson Trucking Driving School even would know what to do with a truck like this? Lol

I’m 14 and I’ve drove DM-686s and DM-800s with 4x4 and a 5x3. Al generations can do this it’s just newer trucks.
Es un manejo prolijo🤘🍺💪👍
Looks like I finally found the transmission used in all the car racing movies... they shift and shift and shift and shift... then they change scenes...
and shift and shift and shift... lol
kleetus92 fast and furious 1 comes to mind when they street race 4 of them haha
Famous nos boost part
kleetus92
Lol!!!!
hahahah
Dude was smooth as silk, compared to some of these hamfisted vids I see.
This is what we call a stick and a half. This is kinda funny. A whole lota shiftin on flat ground and 400 horse
Pretty DAMN smooth brother!
I'm guessing not your 1st time...
9 speed direct with a 4 speed auxillary
9 over, probably has 4.11 rears or in that neighborhood.
9 over 5th is against the dash. And a 9 progressive you pull the selector up in 4th instead of 5th
Ya, but can you float gears while shifting on the space shuttle??????
Why is there a splitter lever on the one stick?
George Elliott Its a 9 speed main box. Has 5 low forward gears and 4 high. Lo is bottom left, 1 is middle up, 2 middle down, 3 bottom right, 4 up right. Pull range valve, 5 is up middle and carry on same as low range.

Once you get into high range, you can start splitting them into smaller ratios. Like a modern Eaton 13 speed.
for a second i thought the second gear shifter was for your high speeds. but that splitter proves otherwise.
what transmission model numbers are you running? i've got a divorced 4x4 and im considering swaping out the main 4 speed for a 9, it looks like the ratios match up pretty good between the 9 and 4 thanks great video

why did it the divorce the 2x4 ? LMAO
shiz, even got time to slam a mountain dew. pfft
Ahhhh.....Hell.....(O_O), they had it rough back then !
seem like it lol
So the right is the split. ...but thers still air for the high side
Sounds like a v8 cat?
How do u know when it's time to use which shifter. I would love to know
It's sad the few snowflakes of the millennium generation that think they can drive do so with automatics. I learned to drive these as an apprentice mechanic before I could legally drive a car on the street. Patriot Warrior yeah yeah, up hill in the snow both ways.
minischnauze13 not far from the truth in Buffalo.
Ding ding ding there it is. Just won five dollars betting on how long it would take some low brow losers to turn it political or religious.
So the low range has no aux gears just the high range? Never seen a twinstick with a range selector.
9speed main, 4speed auxiliary
15 speed?
9 speed main, 4 speed auxiliary
She takes a bit to wind out but god she has one hell of a stride
SMOOTH !!! >LOOK AT HIS LEFT > LEG :: DID NOT MOVE !! > LEFT HAND GOS IN SIDE THE WHEEL >GETS HIS GEAR >RIGHT GET HIS AXEL !! OLD SCHOOL !! LOVE IT !! GREAT JOB >NOW THATS SHIFTING !!!( CAN ANY ONE TELL ME > HOW MANY GEARS IN ALL DO THIS TWIN HAVE ???REAR AND TRANY > LOOK AT IT GOOD ?????
mike Lane its a 9 over with a 4 speed aux and V8 cat
mike Lane stupid
Watch his left leg, it does move.
Thats skill
No entiendo se supone que está mostrando cómo se opera , entonces porque vuela los cambios?
My mother is so disappointed in me because I watch hours of this instead of porn...and by the way...slammin' a Big Gulp while slingin' around a pair of stixx...BIG STRAPPER stuff right there folks...Bee Eye Gee...B I G
I learned on a 5 by 4,transfer trailers in kalifornia,I wish they ere still around, kids now adays would not what to do
RT-910 Roadranger? and a Spicer auxiliary ? that is a SFB setup.
George Foltz 9 0ver with a 4
36 speeds, you'll never have a problem😉
Steve Ross n
Katie p
Yes, five low range with four high range plus four speed second stick..
Steve Carras so thats how u would shift this thing, i drove a tranny 4x4 manual and air.... wow these were the times....
Actually you wouldn't get 36 different ratios as many would overlap.
Traigo un doble-remolque cervecero...me dicen La Fresa y que viva el buen y fino conducir
36 speed?
9x4? That is 36 gears. Do you think that is enough gears?
How many gears you got? Looks like quite a few! 😁 is it a nine by four? Overdrive
Did you skip a few gears?
So much shifting with these transmissions. Now a lot of trucks have automatics. Just wonder how the automatics hold up.
Great ! drive it every day of week around North circular road London, but ok on long runs. better still have range change, splitter and then these 2 extra gearboxes, plus 2 speed rear axcel, manuaul engage turbos . must have forgoten about somthing
You gotta turn up the sound. At around 2:35, a guy comes across the CB. and says he doesn't have any panties on... that's a crack up
I'm lost, what's the splitter knob for, you already have 2 sticks?
9 over with a 4 speed aux...
This may be a silly question, but how do you keep track of what gear your in?
D J Tanner
Don't need to really keep track. Just listen to the engine and go up or down a gear depending on what she needs.
He doesn't talk on the phone
I know I am replying to a 4 year old comment, but what the heck. He has a 9 speed main transmission and a 4 speed aux. Most twin sticks were 5 speed main and 4 speed aux.
Main transmission the gears are numbered just like you expect 1 thru 5. The auxilliary transmission you name the gears. Deep under , under , direct , and over. So whatever gear your in with the main , plus what ever gear the aux is in. lowest possible gear is 1st deep under , highest gear is 5th over. Your only supposed to use deep under to get moving, once you start progressing thru the gears you do not return to deep under , you go back to under. Good driver
Good job driver. (Left that signal on a lil long! 😁 Didn’t have enough goin on!?)
that looks difficult
TOO BAD THEY DON'T MAKE TWIN STICKS FOR CDL DRIVERS. IT WOULD IN MY MIND MAKE BETTER DRIVERS AND BETTER PEOPLE AS WELL.
Probably would make better drivers. Trucks with automatic transmissions sound like there's something missing, and there is. It's not the same sound as a driver shifting.
So I'm guessing your a bull hauler? And you got a friend that has a horse farm?
Pero que maestría eso sin duda lo escribo
SKILLS!!!!!
Yup keep u busy lol I drive mack 5x4
Cowboy shifting
Que chulada manehar
A 4 speed aux box don't see them any more I have a few stashed in my shop for projects not built yet .
Ok so 13 speed nothing for your thumb to move it's been replaced with stick
Nope, this is not one of those fake twin sticks. This is a real twin stick. It is a 9speed overdrive with a 4 speed overdrive behind it (divorced).
1:40 you’re regular 13spd ain’t there bud haha
Damn it Boy
Maestria total....
I got an 18 spd with a 10 spd aux...got 180 gears forward...I use'm all!
Hahaha!

すぎちゃんネル what u said....
Skinny charlie
Japanese trucks are easy to drive.
You are driving with very nice techniques.
I subscribed to the channel! ️
すぎちゃんネル Thank you Sir for getting back..... Good Man....
I’ve been trucking for three years what the fuck am I looking at? Why not just drive a 10 speed, 13 speed or 18 speed? Is this custom or do they come from the factory like that?
1971 peterbilt.
1693ita cat no govoner
5×4 and 3.55s
When cat sounds like International 1086 but it using Eaton Fuller 18 speed? or Cummins Big Cam 400?
