      FYI Allot of Komucha on the market is being pasteurized now this prevents the beverage from continuing to ferment and raising the alcohol content which has been a legal concern in the industry. Typically the pasteurization process kills off any live bacteria/cultures or yeast in the process and hence halts the increase of alcohol. A allot of the major manufactures now add live cultures back into the beverage so they can still say it has live cultures in it, though it's not from the original /organic source. However the high alcoholic versions of Kombucha that are now sold as is and continue to ferment fall into a different category similar to beer. Some manufactures filter out a lot of the yeast to halt the fermentation process before bottling as another means to prevent it from post fermenting and raising the alcohol content. As you mention in the video some people react to Kombucha in a negative way or have bad reactions to it. This could be more related to the high yeast content that comes from added yeast or developed from certain fruits they use, which a lot of people may have sensitivity to these yeast cultures. Kombucha is not much different than other fermented beverages and shouldn't be consumed in excess. The recommended amounts by aficionados is no more than 4-6oz daily. Also unless someone is making there own and not monitoring there PH levels or practicing proper brewing techniques it's pretty unlikely they are going to get sick or die from consuming it, especially a commercially made version drinking moderate quantities. Kombucha has acetic acid similar to vinegar, if it doesn't under go a secondary fermentation process the PH levels should remain low making it much more vinegary tasting drink. Usually the higher PH the more desirable and a much sweeter the drink. The lower PH versions with high levels of acetic acid will prevent the growth of most harmful bacteria but are less desirable to drink and have a similar taste profile to apple cider vinegar. In general Kombucha is not any healthier than apple cider vinegar for that matter if you consume the raw form. The only major health concern should that it can erode your tooth enamel from the acetic acid and avoid high alcohol forms of it. Kombucha sales has skyrocketed in the last few years, I don't see that changing, but the health myths created mostly by marketing hype definitely needs to be examined and brought to public attention and I appreciate your effort in doing that. Keep up the good work as always. Thank you!

      Kind of disappointed with a case-report analysis. 4 people death and 5 with some kind of toxicty in 25 years.... So what!!! More people die of peanut and seed allergies. Are they not on the Daily Dozen? 29-,000 people can died in 2012 un the US also from C difficile (doi: 10.1056/NEJMoa1408913.) ..this bateria is also found in vegetables (doi: 10.1155/2014/158601) Should we not recomend vegetables? Man. Dr greger can do better. Can you please incorporate new research about fermented foods and inflamation? (Looking at Stanford studies).

    The case states the patient was a 22-year old Filipino male recently diagnosed with HIV a month earlier. He consumed 34oz (1 liter) of raw Kombucha in one sitting though he did share some of it with a friend but it doesn't sound like he has ever consumed it previously, so 15 hours latter he ends up in the hospital with acute renal failure after ingesting Kombucha. His other medical history included anaphylaxis to peanuts. People with peanut allergies shouldn't eat peanuts and people with yeast sensitives shouldn't consume certain fermented beverages like Belgium Beers and Kombucha either. Obviously he had both issues. Kombucha should not be consumed like water, too much of a good thing doesn't make it better. This doesn't mean Kombucha is bad it just means you need to be sensible. This guy consumed it as a means to help raise is T-cell count though there is little if any evidence to support that theory. The question should be how much Kombucha is safe to consume, for some that may mean not at all.

  • @shaneashby5890
    @shaneashby5890 3 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    In regards to Dr. Greger's anecdotes of those people ending up in the hospital. The thing we need to keep in mind is, what was the original source of that Kombucha? Was it store-bought? Did they get it from a friend if so who was that friend? Or did they make it themselves? Where proper hygiene practices followed? What was their experience level with making it? Did they know what they were doing? What type of tea did they use? What type of sugar did they use? Was it organic tea or was it contaminated tea from China with chemicals and heavy metals in it? How much Kombucha do they drink per day (the dose is 1 cup)? There are so many variables to take into account! The truth is Kombucha has been around for thousands of years. So if it was harmful then it would have been stopped and known long ago. And one other thing to remember is homemade Kombucha is superior and completely different from inferior store-bought Kombucha. You can't even compare the two!

    • @lc2654
      @lc2654 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Some very valid points, Shane however “ if it were harmful it would have been stopped long ago”... like smoking cigarettes and consuming meat? One should not equate popularity with healthy benefit.

      @shaneashby5890 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lc2654 Your entitled to your own opinion but not your own set of facts. What was offered in this video? He offered no proof, no studies and people giving personal anecdotes (Chinese whispers) is not evidence. People who smoke and eat meat do it because their daft, that’s why they do it. People who make homemade Kombucha from organic ingredients do it because they know something you don’t.

    • @shaneashby5890
      @shaneashby5890 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Mario Hashiba The reason I wrote my first comment was because the notion that kombucha is harmful to human health is pure non-sense. When you use reverse osmosis water, organic rapadura sugar (which is high in vitamins & minerals), organic green tea, and organic kombucha vinegar (starter tea) to make kombucha. How could any of those ingredients be harmful? And if kombucha vinegar is harmful then you would have to say apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, and white vinegar must be harmful too right? Well, that is absolute non-sense, everyone knows vinegar is extremely healthy for the human body. So those anecdotes in Dr. Greger's videos are garbage and is proof of nothing.
      Yes, there needs to be more research on the health benefits of kombucha.
      I personally drink homemade Kombucha because in one cup there are trillions of beneficial bacteria. I look at it as a drink that helps with creating and maintaining a healthy microbiome. Here is the nutritional profile of kombucha and this is not including the nutrients of the green tea & rapadura sugar too;
      Bacterium gluconicumBacterium xylinumAcetobacter xylinumAcetobacter xylinoidesAcetobacter KetogenumSaccharomycodes ludwigiiSaccharomycodes apiculatusSchizosaccharomyces pombeZygosaccharomyesSaccharomyces cerevisiaeAcetic acidAcetoacetic acidBenzoic acidpropenyl esterBenzonitrileButanoic acidCaffeineCitric acidCyanocobalaminDecanoic acidEthyl AcetateFructosed-Gluconic acidGlucoseHexanoic acidItaconic acid2-Keto-gluconic acid5-Keto-gluconic acid2-Keto-3-deoxy-gluconic Lactic acidNiacinamideNicotinic acidPantothenic acidPhenethyl AlcoholPhenol, 4-ethyl6-Phospho gluconatePropionic acidOctanoic acidOxalic acidRiboflavind-Saccharic acid(Glucaric acid)Succinic acidThiaminplus 40 other acid esters in trace amount.
      One other thing to keep in mind is kombucha is brewed over 10 days. You know it's ready by how sourer it tastes. And at that stage, there is no sugar left because the yeast and bacteria have eaten it as fuel. I love Dr. Greger but on this his wrong. Mario kombucha is healthy but if you disagree well that's your choice.

    Sorry but you've cherry picked information from articles to support your hypothesis. The elaborate nature of the one 2003 Study devotes pages to the documented health benefits of the drink, and the other two deaths that you referenced in the beginning of the video happened in 1995 all in the same area that was traced back to one bad batch of tea.
    With that being said, there is volumes of evidence showing the benefits of tea and kombucha is a more bioavailable version in its fermented form. Also, the probiotic benefit is overwhelming as there are studies showing the 14 different strains of bacteria and yeast present in varying forms in kombucha. I've been a commercial brewer now for nine years and I've read almost every study you referenced in this video.

The patients in most, if not all, of the case studies to date had underlying conditions such as asthma, HIV, heavy alcoholism, malnourishment or overweight (with strong potential for diabetes myelitis and hyperthyroidism) and the only link to kombucha was that they had mostly either drunk it in the 24 hours prior to presenting or had drunk it daily for a month or two. Acidosis happens if you drink large amounts of kombucha, and people might not be aware of that, which might explain people getting sick when drinking it in large amounts. Kombucha also contains caffeine , which could be problematic for people with compromised kidney function, and make acidosis worse.
    However, consumed in moderate amounts (a bottle or so a day), it's not really worse than any other probiotic food.

    Eating animal products "only seems to benefit those who sell it." Cattle ranchers, poultry farms, fishermen, etc. All these benefits from people eating animal products. But in the end, beginning around age 50 or so, manifestations of clogged arteries appear, requiring high blood pressure medications, blood thinners, cholesterol medications, etc. By about age 60, many people need stents, bypass surgery, pacemakers, etc. By about age 70 long-term use of medications results in kidney failure. So many older people are hospitalized mainly as a result of the diet they have been eating all their lives. I'm 62 and vegan for 7 years. I was a caregiver to elderly parents and a grandmother for 17 years. I saw what the Standard American Diet did to them. All I can say is that I wish there was this much publicity about the dangers of consuming meat and dairy as there is concerning relatively harmless foods like kombucha. Most commercially prepared kombucha is safe. I think that contamination from home-brewing kombucha is what causes most of the dangerous side effects.

    I basically never had a headache for my entire life, maybe only the few times I got the flu. In my 50s I started getting migraines that would last 8 to 10 hours. They became quite frequent, 2 or 3 times a week. I had started drinking 1/2 a bottle of kombucha every night after my dinner, so 8oz I guess. Had been drinking the kombucha for probably over a year before the headaches started so it didn't register that may be the cause. Was just reading about migraines and came across the info that some people get migraines from kombucha. So I cut out the kombucha and the migraines went away immediately. After a month or so I decided to add kefir to my diet. After a few days migraines came back. Stopped the kefir and migraines gone. It's seems that for some people the over consumption of fermented foods causes issues. Could be similar to lactose. We all have a limited tolerance for it, it's just different for each person.

      @@Cochita322 The amount of sugar you can add depends on the size and the number of the scobies you are using.
      When I harvest Kombucha (after 7 days) there's no sugar left and so I have to make more sweet tea and then I transfer the scoby directly into the sweet tea (after it has cooled enough that I can comfortable touch the jar).
      Since there's no sugar left I add some in the form of juice or berries for the 2nd fermentation.
      For me, the trick to avoid mold (or black spots) is to aim to keep the scoby in the tea mixture.

Honestly that steak you ate for dinner has dangerous chemicals. Nutmeg is slightly toxic. Your non-stick pan has horrible chemicals in them. Everything is out to get you. If you enjoy kombucha just enjoy it! It has wonderful capabilities of turning people away from addiction to sodas (Coca-Cola gave my grandfather diabetes he doesn't really eat candy or anything. Soda is a big issue in diabetes). It also has a very very small amount of alcohol which can be healthy for people that wish to abstain from drinking beer or liquor. The only FDA control on nutritional supplements or natural remedies is the following disclaimer: "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration." and/or "This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."
      Also, something many of us don't understand is that the FDA was not and is not in order to protect the population but to service industries that are regulated, such as pharmaceutical, which is, IMHO, the enemy of true health care, which is by nature preventative rather than interventional like is promoted by Big Pharma and the allopathic medicine industries.

    Maybe ppl are having side effects cause they are drinking the whole bottle ( 1 cup) with every meal. It might be to much, and should be taken in small amounts like apple vinegar.
    Isn’t this a drink that has been used in Asia )China , Japan etc for hundreds of years, seems weird that it’s being considered as dangerous now

    No one is trying to prove the "health risks" of yogurt, kimchi, miso, tempeh, sauerkraut or sourdough, other cultured acidic foods like kombucha that have been safely consumed for thousands of years and have clear dietary benefits!

I'm sure the Kombutie industry LOVES you now......however, I never did like the taste of this stuff and never bought into its supposed health benefits....although, as you say, its fermented, so surely it has some kind of positive effect on our healthy bacteria in the lower gut???? Anyway, so glad I never got addicted to this stuff and I actually didn't realize some people have died from drinking it....very scary.....Thanx as alway Professor Greger!

    Dr Greger , you're not leaving cited sources on screen long enough for people to actually read them. Your previous format videos of a voice over with cited sources is much more easy to follow and assimilate. It is distracting to try and watch you and the sources cited at the same time. Thanks

    I tend to occasionally get kombucha to mix with other drinks like a kind of non alcoholic cocktail haha. Find it can make juice drinks a lot more fun due to its sour/carbonated flavor.
    Don't personally find much out of it in terms of healthiness since it seems not much different than a more acidic(?) sweet tea. Imagine just drinking straight tea without the added sugars would be better personally. But, I like mixing it up with the stuff occasionally.

      It's absolutely amazing for you I know multiple people who have cured their IBS with kombucha and other gut related problems as well as it helps my gut issues, he's cherry-picking a few cases of people who drink contaminated kombucha and there is absolutely no science-based evidence that kombucha is bad for you and it said that science has not explored the wonderful benefits of this absolute miracle health drink that you can make yourself and you don't need to pay into some big corporation or big Pharma poisoning you with pills.

    This is really disappointing. I've given so much up (meat, dairy, alcohol, most flour and sugar), kombucha (although grossly over priced) was a real treat. They ferment it at the micro-breweries in my neighbourhood and it was a great swap for beer. I'm having a little pity party for myself today. 😥🙁

    • @JosiahMcCarthy
      @JosiahMcCarthy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I mean, he didn't say it's terrible, it's just been identified as the cause of some problems, rarely, and it's not been tested for benefits. It's just like a million other foods out there. You should probably not drink a whole lot of it, but occasionally would be fine. For him, he's making recommendations to thousands or millions of people, so he's not going to recommend it, but what he just went over was NOT damning evidence, it was basically just, "this hasn't really been studied at all, so hold your horses on health claims."
