    We are always being asked if Kombucha is good for the health and whether it has a beneficial effect on your Gut Health. We speak to Adam from JARR Kombucha to find out his take on the health effects of drinking Kombucha - fermented tea.
    It is important to note that studies continue to be done on Kombucha and tea in general. The opinions in this video represent Adam's understanding of the literature available and are by no means exhaustive or fixed in any way. There may be some probiotic effect by drinking Kombucha but at present, there is no evidence that he has seen to suggest that any probiotic action is significant to our health and the value of Kombucha on gut health seems to be more pre-biotic in nature.

    I love that even with a clear financial conflict of interest, you tried to present the best available scientific evidence in a neutral manner. The marketing pitch of "it hasn't been scientifically proven to *not* give you eternal life so who knows" that some people subscribe to turns me away from products. Ultimately this is about tasting good and being an alternative to things that have been proven unhealthy. If we find out down the line it has some previously unknown benefits, all the better.

    I'm in the field of nutrition so I think it would be really interesting to see a study looking at whether or not spore-forming bacteria in Kombucha outlive the acidity of the stomach or even if the digested bacteria, as they release DNA in digestion if this would be picked up by the microbiome - bacteria have the capacity to pick up DNA from other bacteria to incorporate in their cells or even genome via vectors, ultimately, modulating their gene expression and possibly their benefits. This is how we now produce insulin from microorganisms - we insert a plasmid vector in them so that they replicate this plasmid. I made bacteria glow last year by expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP). If anyone is interested go check that out and feel free to reply to the comment if you have any questions etc.

    Thanks for this. Too many lay writers and social media personalities traffic in misinformation about basic biochemistry and biomedicine let alone interpretation of what scientific evidence does or doesn’t support the health benefits of kombucha. Dialogue and difference of opinion are valuable so long as misinformed “truth” claims don’t promote dietary choices that can be outright harmful.

    How much caffeine is in kombucha? Does it not retain 100% of the caffeine from the tea?

    • @MeiLeaf
      @MeiLeaf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adam says that there are about 15-20mg of caffeine per 240ml bottle of their booch which is probably less than the fresh brewed tea and about a quarter of the caffeine in an average espresso.

    fermented foods and drinks have a long history of use among many cultures - and for very good reason - unless we are eating fresh raw fruit and veggies that are full of enzymes most of the time, our digestive systems invariably need a little help - not so much when we are young, of course - but get a little older than 35 or so....

    • @Metalbirne
      @Metalbirne 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason is preservation. That's pretty much why we started and continued doing this. I don't think potential health benefits played a major role in the adoption of fermentation into the different cultures. That doesn't mean that there aren't any benefits though.

    Don, Adam guys, thanks for sharing this info with us. I make my own kombucha at home and it's fantastic. However, people refuse to drink it (the same problem with tea) because of caffeine. Is there a study about exactly how much caffeine stays in the drink after fermentation? Also, is it OK for kids to drink?

    Interesting to hear that the probiotics don’t have any health benefits. I though lactobacillus was a well studied bacteria for helping digestion?

    • @Abha53
      @Abha53 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As per my knowledge, the predominant strains of bacteria in Kombucha are the acetobacter and gluconobacter, which are not normally found taking up residence in our gut. A few Kombuchas, not all, have lactobacillus as well, but in smaller quantities. You are better off eating yogurt and fermented vegetables for probiotics. But Kombucha has lots of health benefits nevertheless because of what the bacteria do to the tea as they ferment it...the acids, enzymes, vitamins and glucosamine that are created in the process.
