The first time I left for long-term travel, I put a lot in storage. At first, it was cheap because of the "intro" rate but then the price increased. By the time I returned 2 years later, I was spending $200/mo. Then I had to pay movers to transport everything into my new home. If I had just gotten rid of everything, I would have saved $5000 that I could have used to buy all new stuff! Rule of thumb: If you're going to be gone for more than 3 months, don't put anything in storage...just sell or donate everything and be done with it.

If in doubt chuck it out! We all have too much STUFF.

When I travel for three months I wouldn't even move out of my home... Too much ... selling everything, packing, moving costs storage I would be exhausted before I even started...

We did the same when downsizing 7 years ago. We paid for 12 mths of storage at £165 a month. At the end we couldn’t even recall what was inside the boxes…. we got rid of everything in storage and regretted the waste of money.

A question for Sarah. Have you ever considered putting Neil into storage to go out and really enjoy yourself?

Just scanned through the questions to watch later with the missus. Gonna be very informative- thanks for doing this, it's very helpful for those of us about to head out. House goes on the market April 15th!

We’re on the same path as you. Been traveling for the last 2 years and the hardest for us is not having creature comforts that we would enjoy like more than 1 kitchen or bath towel, a great espresso machine and a really comfortable sofa with arms. We miss not having a home base to leave our things when we want to go for a 2-3 day trip. Holidays surprisingly haven’t been too bad as we enjoy the smaller crowds in cities when all the locals are at home celebrating with family.

Congratulations on 2 years! We are just five months into our digital nomad life, and we have to comment on the Plovdiv comment. We are currently in Plovdiv, been here for one week, and we absolutely love it! Highly recommend!

Great advice about selling your belongings early. It’s hard to sell your things that you’ve held close to you for so long. ‘Bit-by-bit’ is key. I started selling mine 2 years out. Great advice about remembering why you’re doing it and having the Friday night playlist to fantasise. It was the same as my process 2 years out.
    Safe travel guys. 🤙

How funny. We randomly went to Bulgaria last year, just for a few days. We did two in Sofia and two in Plovdiv. I can honestly say that Bulgaria surprised me. I had really low expectations and the cities were really easy to navigate and what we did see was excellent.

2 things i noticed - sold your house during covid and accommodation prices seem like they've recently doubled. maybe the two are related. suppressed covid prices when you began and now a post covid boom.

Hi guys, great video today and thank you for answering my question, much appreciated. I have a couple of quick follow on questions for next Saturday's Q&A part 2 if I've got them in, in time. If not please could you answer here. Thank you. Here goes:
    1) what equivalent yearly retirement budget would you need for the UK if all your retirement time was spent travelling here, e.g. staying in AirBnB's, eating out, entertainment, groceries etc..?
    2) I'm assuming all the budgets you suggest are after paying UK income tax on your money taken out of your pensions, ISA's etc..?
    Thank you kindly! Cheers, Ian

Great information, thanks. Looking forward to next week's conclusion to this series. Also, TH-cam popped up a suggestion earlier this week and I went back and watched the series of four videos you have regarding finances and fire. Still good information. Additionally, I spent the last two days reading JL Collins book. Great suggestion, thanks. Safe travels

Had to pause the video: Neil "it's now 2013..." Sarah "eh?! like 2023" 🤣 that just cracked me up! 😂 How I travel: I don't take risks abroad that I wouldn't at home. My skepticism stays the same and my barometer for trust remains same too.

Happy 2nd anniversary! We just celebrated our 1st year of super duper slow travel around Mexico - 8 months in San Miguel de Allende, almost 2 months in Guadalajara, 1 month in Oaxaca, and now starting at least a month in Valle de Bravo. We are finding that 1 month in a location is too short and places are starting to blur together. We think 2-3 months would be ideal for our shorter stays in the future. We have not yet cracked the Airbnb code - a place can look amazing online and comments are enthusiastic, but our experience is different. The cost benefits for a 30+ day stay are huge, but we are wondering if shorter bookings would be better to start and then negotiating a longer stay if we like the place/location or switching once we have a better idea of what suits us best in a city. Curious about your decision to plot out so much travel ahead - how do you account for travel problems or wanting to stay longer in a location?

Thanks for the informative and funny video. Question: are there any kitchen implements you always take with you, e.g. a preferred knife, or moka coffee percolator, or knife/fork/spoon set? (things it might be hard to find in a new place and unlikely in an Airbnb)

Love your channel. Just wondering, do you have a strategy in choosing which countries/continents you visit at certain times of the year? I follow several travel youtube channels and it seems that the destinations and time of year are pretty much the same for all of them. Is it due to visas, following warm weather, financial reasons or is it just coincidence? I enjoy listening to your tips & your experiences. You’re such a lovely couple! I hope you make it to Australia and visit some rural areas. Happy travels 😀

I have lived in SE Asia for 14 years and have never had an travel or health insurance. If pre-existing conditions are excluded the insurance is not FULL COVER and I would question it's real effectiveness. However, some countries with high medical costs like USA and Australia would be good exceptions. Having the money is always better - and less stressful - than waiting for an insurer to approve a claim.
