When our son turned 13 I asked what he wanted for Christmas that year. He shrugged. I thought about it and said, "Well then, instead of spending hundreds of dollars on gifts that nobody really cares about, why don't we go away for the week of Christmas?" Thus, our best family tradition was born. I don't know if I could name any gifts I ever received, but those memories of us traveling as a family and spending the holiday week together every year will never be forgotten. We're gearing up for a trip to Florida this Christmas and we're all looking forward to it. My long-winded point is, experiences over things wins every time.
Really enjoy this conversational style Neil, also appreciate you sharing your mistakes, Annette & I have been there as well. So thankful we figured out “looking poor” before we spent the rest of our lives in the poor house. We also really enjoy the adventure and challenge of exploring new places, getting lost and discovering hidden gems and less touristy places is such a joy for us both
@ it was amazing! Really enjoyed that floating prison 😉 it was good transportation back to the states for us and running into you and Sarah was a pleasant surprise
Good one Neil. My wife and I retired 8 months ago at 60, and like you and Sarah, sold our house and 90% of our belongings. Aside from some family commitments this past summer, we have been travelling since. We too have quickly found that the last thing we want to do in all the places we visit is buy stuff. Sure we need a new T shirt or hat from time to time as stuff wears out or gets too far gone (Southeast Asia is hard on clothes!) but otherwise, we have almost gotten to a point where it’s a badge of honour to have less stuff. But I don’t mean to pound my chest and insist that it is for everyone. It’s just how we feel. When we were deciding what we absolutely needed to hang onto I used the analogy of having a house fire. God forbid we lost everything in a fire, what would we really and truly have missed. It didn’t amount to much. I’ve recently come back to your channel, and enjoy your way of presenting. Keep it up, and I will be watching for more! Cheers.
Post divorce I had amazing trips building houses overseas with a charity and taking culinary tours with my daughter. Literally some of my fondest memories. And, I’m glad I did them while I was younger. I experienced the cultures in the countries I visited in a far deeper and more intimate manner. Don’t wait. And adventure more. The older you get the harder it can be to do some of these things.
I really like the style of this, very relaxing chat. I agree with you in the sense that when I go to a country, I really want to see it. Unfortunately cruise ships don't give you much time in port to see much of anything. I have looked at cruising with the same idea as you...sometimes it is cheaper than staying on land in a country if you don't plan on staying in that country for a month. I guess with cruising, it "may" give you a sense of whether you would like to go back and really experience the country.
Another great vlog Neil. I'm totally with you regarding looking poor. I also subscribe to "looking poor on paper". I like that you talked about "value", as this is the most important part of any transaction when you are the buyer. Keep up the good work!
I like this format, happy to have more. Your content is very inspiring and my wife and I are well on our way to reaching FIRE. Spending money on things now feels ridiculous and a waste of opportunity to actually do something worthwhile. We’re unlikely to travel much, but we’ll have the time and money to volunteer and hopefully help others improve their lives. Can’t wait 😊
Great content. I always enjoy watching your videos whether here or on your other channel. I think that part of the “charm” is the sense that we are talking one-on-one. If you’re ever headed to southern Utah ( or Las Vegas) let us know. We’d love to have a coffee or visit some of the local parks, Valley of Fire, Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, … I agree with your way of looking at the world. We could buy new cars but our RV is 20 years old, and our two cars are over 12 years old. We stay as cheaply as is safe / practical. I do believe it leads to a richer life. But have also found that overly frugal leads to missing out on some things. There needs to be a balance and balance is always difficult.
Thanks Charles. We do try to make our videos more of a conversation between you and us. Really appreciate that feedback. We are going to be in Vegas next week but that's likely too soon for you to get there. We'll be back though. All the best.
Love the new style 'off-script' video Neil.., more please :). Also would love to see a video on your decision to sell your house and how you structured your investments etc. for FIRE. Cheers
Very well put Neil. I’m on a motorcycle adventure at the moment. Low cost, gets you involved. Learn a few phases and get involved. 4 big trips next year. Can’t wait! And yes, I have more than one bike, they have become part of the family. No chance of rationalising, they will be an investment one day (that’s my lie and I’m sticking to it). You both do a great job!! Sound advice!
You make a lot of good points, many I totally agree with. But, many people I know (unlike me) don't have the travel mindset, they prefer an actual holiday, esp if 1. They struggle with anxiety about visiting new places, picky eaters etc etc 2. They feel they deserve a little bit of luxury now again. 3. They have impairments or disabilities that prevent them from travelling easily around the world, esp in places like India that from my experience are not always particularly disability friendly 4. Cheapest isn't always best. My wife for example has a chronic back condition and we would rather pay that little bit more for a bigger more comfortable seat on a plane if going long haul or on an extended train journey so she isn't doubled up in agony when we arrive I totally get your point about the Tee shirt, but if it makes him happy, is that wrong? I personally don't see the attraction of cruise ships, but if it makes you happy, and makes you enjoy your life more, that's what matters to me Thought provoking video that and I much prefer the unscripted style. Thanks
When I met my husband 40 years ago he noticed that my purses would wear out or break quickly. I was raised poor and had a frugal mindset and was accustomed to shopping at Walmart, or the like. He said, why don’t you go to the mall and buy a genuine leather purse that will last. It killed me to do that. It was in the 80s, so instead of being $12 for a Walmart purse. It would be a $75 leather purse from a higher end store. It was not a “designer” bag necessarily, where you pay for the name on the label. It was just made from better materials. He was right. Instead of buying at least one new purse per season or 4 purses a year. I had a purse that I was still using and it still looked good 10 years later. So, it’s not about the cheapest price as much as the best value. I assume Sarah explained to you that a designer bag costs much, much more than $100. They are in the hundreds and thousands.
"Trying to be happy by accumulating possessions is like trying to satisfy hunger by taping sandwiches all over your body" ~ George Carlin Looking poor is also safer as you are less likely to be mugged or have your house robbed.
Designer stuff can be functional plus a piece of Art. A purely functional bag has no ‘art-joy’ but a beautifully designed bag has the potential to create joy when the ‘Art’ of it is appreciated.
New to the channel - I love your data driven videos but really loved this one off the cuff. You have great insights and it got me to think about things differently however I'm 65 and not quite ready to retire so I'm in a different stage of life. Will check out the travel channel as well... Thanks!
Such a great way to chat with us about your thoughts. Especially since many of us who are slow traveling or getting ready too, are thinking similarly. 🤔 Thanks for sharing 👍
Utility example. I can buy 3-4 cheap t shirts and they may last 6 months. In summer where I live go outside do a 30 mins walk and I am sweating like a pig and t shirt wet as and uncomfortable as. Go to hiking store pay the price for 1 tshirt worth the 3-4 rubbish ones and it last 3-4 years is moisture wicking you don't feel uncomfortable as in summer you actually feel cool not wet. There's your utility cost. So your argument on clothing flawed as quality lasts rubbish doesn't
I like the comment. You know i do the same. Look back over the 4 years we've been making videos and you'll see in have the very same tshirts. I don't buy them because they are made by a fashionable designer, i buy the shirt that does the job. We're on the same page.
I struggled a bit with this one. It took you 20 minutes to get to the point and the video was only 21 minutes long. I felt I wanted to press your fast-forward button.
That titles been very popular recently, it's done the trick with this video. As an anorak I'm fascinated by the TH-cam algorithm! Not the right channel but I wonder how you'd make a video that illustrates the amount of time and effort it often takes to live like this? For me, i find often winging it day to day can be quite exhausting and I've no home to go back to for a rest! Best I get is if I book two or three weeks in one property or location. We'd like a bolt hole for 4-6 weks in-between playing out but owning and leaving a property in the U.K Is expensive. I've never not owned a property (several at times) until May 2023 and although I love the freedom i'd like the perceived financial security of a home.
There's even a popular TV series made about low-cost adventurous travelling: Race Across the World (BBC). The hitchhiking and time constraints wouldn't be for me, but these guys have some great adventures!
A very wealthy fellow once ask me what person did I think prestige meant more to than anyone else ? I replied with 'not sure'. Then he said the answer is, 'the poor sap that's trying to achieve it while no one else cares.'
As many already replied, this is fun and thought provoking. My wife and I enjoy the fully produced videos as well because we enjoy your comedy. As for looking poor, another benefit is that it makes you less likely to become a target. I might get some skeptical looks on the plane, but I can ride a New York subway without ANY attention at all…😂
These statements are really not true. I know some extremely wealthy people who have lots of designer goods. I'll admit they're often also quite tight though.
Completely agree rich poor is about assets and liabilities. Where I feel you have gone wrong in this video is defining your own value system then telling viewers to adopt yours. I know that was not your intention, but it is what stuck out to me. What I believe, is people need to create their own value system within the means they live and then apply it. For example, in this video you value function over form (TV, water bottle and T-shirt analogy) or challenge/risk over certainty. Another way to look at it would be ‘investing’ in yourself (the real asset) rather than ‘investing’ in stuff (not asset). You then can define what ‘you’ looks like to understand in what you are investing. This comes to breaking the consumer cycle so many people are stuck in. You can genuinely assess what is of value to ‘you’ and buy in on that basis in full control. This approach to personal value system helps to avoiding falling into the ‘buy into status’ trap - where the reason for buying is not for personal value but to buy status in the eyes of others. Eg buying a Porsche for status and how others see you rather than because it is a personal passion that is important to you and part of your value system. Now I am firmly in your camp - ‘doing; rather than ‘having.’. Thank god we realised this at the beginning of our 30s and have spent lat 2 on our own adventures while holding down jobs and saving for retirement. We cannot wait till retirement when we can dial this up to eleven once we get that luxury of ‘time’. But for others, their value system is different. BTW I am with you re the scam of aspirational fashion. But that is not to say all fashion. It isn’t unnessasry fashion for the rich that you have identified, but aspirational fashion purposely targeted by the fashion houses to people who can barely afford it. It is a huge segment and utterly ruthless scam. The real rich won’t be dressed in this overpriced, branded nonsense. But nor will they be dressed in Primark. Their clothes will be more expensive, perhaps very expensive, but it is really down to quality and cut - washes better - lasts longer - doesn’t shrink - fits better. It’s dangerous to think cheap clothes = good, expensive clothes = bad. It is about value and application.
I enjoy this style of video but I think its good to keep a selection to keep things interesting. Quite a lot of points in your videos strike a chord with me. I'm in my late 30s and wish I'd started pension planning much younger rather than just contributing the defaults into my workplace pensions for too long. My wife is taking a bit more to get on-board (She has a DB scheme with her work and just assumed she'd be sorted). Its taken some effort to show that's not great for retiring early but I've got her to start a SIPP and an ISA this year - but she still loves a designer handbag! Something that resonated with both of us though is your point about learning how to adventure. We are often scared about having a bad experience after spending our money on holidays. We often choose the tailor-made 'adventures' but they tend to cost a lot, aren't that authentic and never really venture off the beaten track.
I love this - means so much and so many truths in your video. I'm ( as i've said before ) approaching 59 next year and I know I have enough money and do not need to work and will live well on what I have but - I'm going to work for myself and it's not for the money, it's for the drive in life to challenge myself. Your thoughts on wasteing money drives me insane but that is just people and that can make them happy - it's a persoanl thing but not me. I think the same an old teashirt and old jeans are used the same as a designer one ( got to look decent lol ). and that money wasted could work towards been so much more happier in later life - thanks for the update and good luck onwards.
We have always travelled poor (by sailing to destinations in our own boat - you have to get the boat first). But this means you can go to places away from the usual tourist destinations, and the adventure is getting around the towns, finding where to buy food, fuel, phone etc, and talking to the locals. Our D-in-law always wants to travel to 5 star hotels and all inclusive resorts, where they are totally isolated from the country and people around them, just like you say in the video. Our friends went on a 7 week cruise around South America, and at each port just got off and walked around the city, even that is adventurous, instead of taking the organised tours,.
Most of my t-shirts are at least 3 years old. I do not care, but I have a few very nicely fitting "dress shirts" that I keep clean and ironed. I never know when I get another job interview. Pants, I have like seven pairs and two of them are "nice" pants. We live very frugal.
This comment was made to Appease TH-cam algorithm God 😳 Interesting outlook on life and I have to say normally when I go to a resort that appears to be a prisoner in disguise I always jump on the local transport and go visiting the nearest towns regardless of whether or not I’ve paid all inclusive, I did notice, however when I was in Mexico at one of those resorts and explained to an American couple that we’ve got to know what we intended to do the next day they were rather Trient about leaving the resort. Does this say something about American culture and the way they live or not? Having watched several of your videos now, I have to say that I appreciate the unscripted one’s far more than the scripted ones you create For whatever reason they seem to come across a lot more genuine than (forgive me for saying so) bad puns, so yes please do continue to just reel off your thoughts on whatever subject you appear to want to talk about this week
Thank you for appeasing the algorithm 😃 Pleased you prefer this style, this is how they will be from now on. No guarantees that there won't be bad puns though.... i have an awful sense of humour.
I almost didn’t watch this video because I’d seen a lot of similar titles from “influencers” recently and assumed it was chasing views, but honestly I think it was one of your best. Appreciate the honest unscripted sharing of experience. Thank you.
Off script is great! We need our toys. Travel and audiophile equipment and live music is my thing. We have all the latest TV’s and a new car. We deserve it. The clock is ticking. Spend your money. It’s fun. Die with zero. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Neil and Sarah from Canada with love. Paul and Helen
I like the relaxed, unscripted style. Great subject and content, as always, thank you. Although I'm financially independent now and can afford them now, I've never liked anything with large logos or obvious brand advertising. I always thought why should I pay a lot of money for something and show off to other people what I can afford, whilst providing free advertising for a wealthy company?
I really like your content, as somebody interested in travel, being intentional with my finances and early retirement (20 months and counting...). I went to the Maldives for just 36 hours (because I enjoy trying to visit as many countries as possible, and that window worked out on one of my trips). I stayed on Male and I am certain I enjoyed that more than I would have done for a week or two on some resort island with beach cabins, or whatever. Each to his or her own, but for me that would just be just boring, boring, boring. Male was fascinating. I learned a lot and have great memories of it.
I enjoyed this style of video Neil. MWe did do a few luxury holidays also, but one of the best was a 10 day holiday Greek Island hopping, staying in cheap pensiones. I do still appreciate a little luxury from time to time though.😂
Last summer I went on a hike with a rambling group. It was brewing up to be a hot sunny day, no kidding. I pulled out a tube of ALDI factor 50 and applied it. Shortly after this other guy pulled out a spray bottle of the finest factor 50 money can buy. He then proceeded to spray his arms with it. Me and another person gave a knowing look to each other. Not sure what percentage of the spray actually went on his arms. Ten percent (or less!). What a ********* waste!
The Paul Smith T Shirt calculation isn't quite right because you said it would be. £100 now. He wouldn't still be on £3.5k 30 years later. It might be a days pay which is still a lot for a t-shirt but not a week and a half pay, that would be £700+
People used to criticise me when i bought expensive camera gear which i knew i would use a lot. I would ask them to calculate how much they spent on fags year in year out. So I bought my full frame canon over 10 years ago. Its still working whereas smoking is literally burning money whilst shortening your life.
I enjoyed the video! Wanted to let you know we went back and rewatched your Australia videos, especially the ones around Brisbane and Byron Bay. We are planning our trip there in March 😊. I heard you mention that you bought a house in Spain. Where did you buy? I recently obtained my Spanish citizenship so I am interested in buying a place in Spain on the southern coast. Would love to hear about your experience in purchasing your home in Spain!
One thing that turns me OFF completely is 'designer' name dropping, or wearing something with a name brand all over it. I started watching a YT video and the lady immediately started rattling off the name of her pants, shirt, shoes and coat. And it was not a video about that. It was actually about moving to France. I could not get past that. I kept thinking about it and after 5 minutes clicked off. If I won 5 million TODAY, I would definitely buy a house but it would be near my family. Something inexpensive in todays terms, though. And I could travel instead of work. But since I don't gamble that will never happen. I will only be living on SS so I have resigned myself to that. I currently save about 40 percent of my income so I can have a bit of supplement to the SS when that time comes.
Wasting money (buying something you don't actually value) is a waste. Figuring out your actual values early on makes deciding what and what not to spend your money on so much easier.
Mate I've lived very tight all my life. I still wear underwear that is truly air-conditioned. But it still works, I wear clothes until they are truly dead, and then I use them as rags.
Do you have to rough it to adventure? Genuine question, because having "made it" I've grown quite fond of nice hotels (with comfy beds, nice showers, gyms, pools, etc.), taking cars instead of public transportation, eating at restaurants instead of street food, etc. I haven't yet made the leap to business class long haul flights, but I'm semi planning to.
Yes! Actually this would be a great idea for a video. I'll take a copy of your comment and reply in a video. I thought exactly the same as you before we started travelling. Hopefully you'll find its a far better experience than you could imagine. Thanks so much for this!
For drinking water etc. I reuse a plastic bottle that came with something else in it. For backpacking, the reuse bottle far lighter in weight and easier to carry than the branded heavy bottles. Because the bottle came with a foodstuff in it, it is food grade plastic. I was shocked that your bottle cost £10… mine was free!
Those free (not free) water bottles are not very durable. They get small cracks because they're weak/less durable which harbour bacteria. And they're not as easy to wash with warm soapy water and you definitely can't put them in a dishwasher. We've probably all reused one use plastic bottles but it's not the best thing to do for the sake of a few pounds?
The rich get richer by acting poor. The poor get poorer by acting rich. The wealthiest people I know drive a 15 year old volvo and shop at lidl. You would never guess how wealthy they are until you visit their home. They live in a 'Hall' with walled vegetable garden, paddock and indoor pool.
In my 20's before the internet and mobile phones I rode my old BMW motorcycle through Europe into Africa and then Cape Town. And I've done lots of similar journeys and adventures since. We still try to lead a (relatively speaking) adventurous lifestyle but it's a bit easier with modern technology. Unlike you we make no forward plans. I just get an idea and within days I act on it. We rarely have anything more than a week in advance booked and luckily my wife just rolls with it. We both have one of those expensive swiss made watches and my wife likes mulberry handbags so she has some (in the storage unit!). Waste of money? Not really, if I think I almost never buy a coffee when we're out, I make packed lunches and we eat in our accommodation most of the time. We do eat out to try the local or regional food when travelling. We live a similar lifestyle to you but when I watch your videos I actually think you're spendthrifts! And that's not meant as an insult. We're all the same but different. Those swindon town shirts were a good buy though weren't they!
Good idea about the European train travel. We're in Portugal and got a one way ticket to Lisbon, then we used the Flixbus to go to Porto, Evora and down to the Algarve with a few regional trains, bolt taxi cars and quite a lot of shanks pony. We're going back to the U.K by bus and train. Nothing planned.
Really interesting. I'd say you two are really adventurers! Blimey, if you saw the video with the Swindon shirts, you've been here a long time! For that we both salute you.
I think that there's a big difference between looking poor and not having designer brands. I wear dress-up shirts daily at work. So I look fancy, but I get my shirts from Uniqlo which is amazing quality for value. I could technically wear my old shirts and have yellow pit-stains, but people base their opinion on your appareance. If looking good makes me 1$ more an hour, then it returns the value within a week. Also consider what you are saving on. If you buy a new car over a used, but save on your grocery-shopping, it's a lot more hassle and you might have lower quality food which gives you future issues. I think "is the lemon worth the squeeze" a fitting saying.
Buy low profile high quality items. Pay attention to the materials, especially when it comes to clothing. Be careful what you put against your skin. P.S. I’ve been blessed with terminal buyer’s remorse.
Always done type 2 holiday fun activities. Remember cycling through Vietnam and locals though I was poor because the wealthy westerners were on the buses passing by.
Generally speaking, this video could have ended at the 5-minute mark. I value your experience and have enjoyed your other videos, but I had to turn this one off 1/4 of the way through because I got the message. 🙂
8:53 I think it’s fair to say a good majority of your audience. I’ll very much like me and a bloody skinflints. I’ve never apart from one car when I was young took HP out. I never buy anything brand named whatsoever and if I do get a new car to me, it’s always at least 3 to 4 years old as far as electrical goods are concerned as you say they always come down in price the next year so wait till then
I have been living a flexible lifestyle since 2001. Unfortounantly not financially literate in my 20s, So have to take jobs for a few months at a time to fund my travels. Whereever I go I want to live like the locals. I will rent a room in someones home if there for a while. Or traveling around SE Asia I find host families and live with them. Much more exciting that being on a ship or resort. In the US you can go to places like TJ Maxx or Marshals and buy designer clothes for bargain brand prices. Since I am a minimalist I only have a few pieces and make them last a very long time. So consumerism is not my thing.
That sounds great. There is a pedicure that I'll be talking about in the next video that it sounds like you'll find interesting. Basically about part time retirement. Thanks for the interesting comment.
Good video, but I don't think it's about showing poor. Is about maturity and knowing what you want out of life. I am older than you I would agree that cruising and resorts can get boring.
So, I’d own both: when you feel like being poor, then you will by my crappy goods. When you feel like being rich, then you can buy my luxury goods. Choose how you want live and whatever way I am there to sell something to you.
Honestly? I did not notice significant differences in style in this video, very similar it struck me That said, I like that style! Agree with the thrust of the video. I am guilty as hell of buying designer shirts these days, but in mitigation I have, in the main, followed the advice given here all my life and am therefore now in a position to be profligate in some ways like this particular example. Sensible in most other ways Never ever really made those types of mistakes you mention
That is also a very useful point about value and cost. If you can more than afford something and have diagnosing independence then you can enjoy guilt free.
I have more than £2M in assets and savings and I buy t shirts on ebay for £5 each. They are very good quality and last many years. My jeans are from m&s and are about £30. I never buy designer or big brand names which is in part due to not wasting money on stuff. I have saved for my retirement and to help my daughter get a step up in life.
If I won the lottery I could enjoy my dream to retire and travel while still keeping our home for my husband and our dogs and he could continue to stay at home and keep his job which is his dream. This is the reality when life partners have two different dreams and not the income to sustain two different dreams.
Keep up these rants, They are great. I have not bought clothing in so long. LOL.. I just do not care. I am addicted to buying assetts that generate passive income. The only loans I do are loans to buy more passive income streams. Keep up the great work. WHo needs a Paul Smith Tshirt when you can have a condo in Vegas to rent out?
If you could see me I'm a right scruffy git. People laughing at me at work, that was until I showed them how much I invest each month. I put £2500 away every month. I also buy classic cars and do them up. I agree that buying liabilities and depreciating assets is daft. In fact someone complimented me for wearing a classic style retro top. Until I pointed out it's actually a 1990s top. I see money for what it is, a means to an end. I spend on what I need not what I want. 5:315:31
While it may be true that winning the lottery today may not serve your personal monetary endeavors in life - and I understand it may seem a waste of money to purchase lottery tickets - still imagine the bigger possibilities you'd have with extra funds to enhance other's lives, as you said you'd help family, friends and charity. Instead of being a curse, it may instead be an exhilarating way for you to enhance other people's life journey, perhaps as an extension of your business and mission.
I enjoyed the style of the video. I don't like the 'Look poor' thing, though. I see it all over You Tube. I think it's a bit insulting to people who really are poor. Looking poor isn't a choice for some people. I understand the idea but I don't like the choice of words.
@2GoRoam ha ha that's funny... we are in Perth... thank goodness for trees and the shade they provide otherwise I would be a crispy critter at the end of our long hot summers... a vehicle with air con and a trailer load of water will you give you a fighting chance. Love your work Neil.
I prefer using the word modest as opposed to poor for a way to describe how to present oneself....modest without the religious or sexual connotations. Second, I never allowed my kids to own or wear clothing with designer names on them. What, we have to pay THEM to do their advertising? Third...I never told my kids we could not afford something they wanted. (In truth, we were comfortable enough to get anything they'd ask for, although we wouldn't.). Instead, I always told them it was not in the budget to acquire what they asked for, unless it was something they needed or we wanted them to have. Finally, winning a lottery? It would not change our lives in any measurable way. We get lottery tickets on a regular basis to enjoy the psychological game of 'what if'. But if we won, we already have a game plan of what to do with it that doesn't, as I said, measurably change our lives...just the reaping of enjoyment of how we'd distribute it.
I'm 55 and seriously considering retiring soon, although I'm already self-employed doing something I enjoy which is low-stress. I really enjoy your videos. Great insights that make me think.
Yes we will. We are waiting on the TV show being aired before we do. We have a whole series of videos planned. There has been a delay in the TV show. Looking forward to that getting out there in the world.
Interesting question. Certainly removing the drag of all the expenses of owning a home in the uk made everything much, much easier. Doing the maths and seeing that 25% of our monthly budget when travelling was spent on a house e wouldn't be using seemed daft. We could still have fired with the house but... FIRE is a lot to do with making the right financial decisions. If we'd have kept the house, all the hard work we'd put in to get where we were would have seemed a little wasted... ie, have a life where you don't over spend on frivolous things and then hold onto our largest asset that we wouldn't be using. How that helps.
Here's my problem with this video. You're basically ridiculing the things that you personally dont care about and suggesting that you're somehow enlightened and those that do care about that stuff are wrong. Look everyone has a thing, some people spend money on eating out a lot. Some people enjoy travel, some people like to watch live sports and buy season tickets, some people craft, some people like tech, some like old stamps. Who are you to say what other people should spend their money on. How arrogant are you to think that your path to happiness should apply to everyone. I own a Goyard backpack and it cost £2500. What does it do? It makes me happy. It wouldnt make you happy but it makes me happy. It makes me more happy than the additional £2500 in the bank made me.
Totally Mel. I wish my parents did that with me when i was younger. Experiences are memorable.
Thanks Mel.
I like this style because it's more conversational as opposed to a more scripted narrative.
Thank you. This is helping me a lot.
Really enjoy this conversational style Neil, also appreciate you sharing your mistakes, Annette & I have been there as well. So thankful we figured out “looking poor” before we spent the rest of our lives in the poor house. We also really enjoy the adventure and challenge of exploring new places, getting lost and discovering hidden gems and less touristy places is such a joy for us both
Thanks Mark. Think we'll be doing more like this.
As floating prisons go. It wasn't so bad eh 😃
@ it was amazing! Really enjoyed that floating prison 😉 it was good transportation back to the states for us and running into you and Sarah was a pleasant surprise
Likewise Mark.
Cheers.
Before you buy, always ask, "What could I sell this for tomorrow at a garage sale?" Great video!
Great point! I like that a lot.
Sadly the answer is not nearly what you paid for it.
Why would you buy stuff you plan to sell? I usually buy stuff I really need like a heater or computer.
Yes, yes, yes Dorothy! You'll have those memories forever. Resort vacations are instantly forgettable.
You look like you’ve regained some of your health over the past year. Congratulations! Nothing more valuable than that.
Thank you Lori. 2025 is going to be our year to finally get totally travel fit 😃
Great video. Love the format. You’re a great storyteller. Love listening to you and learning. ❤
Love this style. One thing full-time travel with a small suitcase resolves is the urge to buy…
Your videos are always good but I really enjoyed this conversational style.
I appreciate that, thank you.
We enjoyed the rant style Neil.
Ahhh thank you guys!
Nice bit of life conversation therapy, its good to just air it off without a script and just say it how it is.
Thank you. This is really helpful.
That's great Jagman. Travel or not, you are building a life where you control what you do, not somd Brand Manager.
Another great video Neil, always appreciate your insight.
Glad you enjoyed it Toga!
So agree (with a little spilling every now and then 🙂) That’s why the Aussie gap year of back packing is such a great life experience
Yes, that's a great thing you guys do!
Great content. I always enjoy watching your videos whether here or on your other channel. I think that part of the “charm” is the sense that we are talking one-on-one. If you’re ever headed to southern Utah ( or Las Vegas) let us know. We’d love to have a coffee or visit some of the local parks, Valley of Fire, Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, …
I agree with your way of looking at the world.
But, many people I know (unlike me) don't have the travel mindset, they prefer an actual holiday, esp if
1. They struggle with anxiety about visiting new places, picky eaters etc etc
2. They feel they deserve a little bit of luxury now again.
3. They have impairments or disabilities that prevent them from travelling easily around the world, esp in places like India that from my experience are not always particularly disability friendly
4. Cheapest isn't always best. My wife for example has a chronic back condition and we would rather pay that little bit more for a bigger more comfortable seat on a plane if going long haul or on an extended train journey so she isn't doubled up in agony when we arrive
I totally get your point about the Tee shirt, but if it makes him happy, is that wrong? I personally don't see the attraction of cruise ships, but if it makes you happy, and makes you enjoy your life more, that's what matters to me
Thought provoking video that and I much prefer the unscripted style. Thanks
We really enjoyed this style. You really made a lot of sense. Thanks!
"Trying to be happy by accumulating possessions is like trying to satisfy hunger by taping sandwiches all over your body" ~ George Carlin
Looking poor is also safer as you are less likely to be mugged or have your house robbed.
Designer stuff can be functional plus a piece of Art. A purely functional bag has no ‘art-joy’ but a beautifully designed bag has the potential to create joy when the ‘Art’ of it is appreciated.
Yes I agree! The cruises bring him joy but there’s no return. (Apart from memories) each to their own 😊
New to the channel - I love your data driven videos but really loved this one off the cuff. You have great insights and it got me to think about things differently however I'm 65 and not quite ready to retire so I'm in a different stage of life. Will check out the travel channel as well... Thanks!
Thank you Kathy. Hope you like our travel channel too.
Love this style!
Such a great way to chat with us about your thoughts.
Especially since many of us who are slow traveling or getting ready too, are thinking similarly. 🤔
Thanks for sharing 👍
Our pleasure! Thank you so much.
Really like this video, your reflections and hindsight give me food for thought about real adventures and further discovery 🙂
Thanks Kath. Pleased you found it interesting.
I felt I wanted to press your fast-forward button.
great convocation my wife n love travel i look like I'm employed to keep her safe lol life about gratitude and remaining humble
I liked this style of video, but then I always get some good nugget of info and enjoy your videos however you choose to do them. Variety is good! 😊
I'll try to keep it interesting and different Annette 🙂
I really like this style video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Another great video. Scripted or non spirited, I like both. If I had to choose I’d probably steer to the latter.
Thanks Carly! That's really helpful. Always enjoy getting your comments 👍
I might get some skeptical looks on the plane, but I can ride a New York subway without ANY attention at all…😂
That's true! Rich people don' buy designer goods!
These statements are really not true. I know some extremely wealthy people who have lots of designer goods. I'll admit they're often also quite tight though.
@@MartinSheldon-r7e yes , They will buy Quality with Disposable Cash .
Not on Credit and not with investing moneys .
Love the off script. Love all your videos 😊
Thanks so much 😊 really appreciate it.
Words of wisdom separate the needs from the wants. It's difficult though I know we all have guilty pleasures.
Yes that is really the first step isn't it, then you can build.
Thanks as ever. Love having you here.
I also love that you still enjoy working. Think you'll find the next video interesting as I discuss that subject.
Love that! We're just the same.
This comment was made to Appease TH-cam algorithm God 😳
Interesting outlook on life and I have to say normally when I go to a resort that appears to be a prisoner in disguise I always jump on the local transport and go visiting the nearest towns regardless of whether or not I’ve paid all inclusive, I did notice, however when I was in Mexico at one of those resorts and explained to an American couple that we’ve got to know what we intended to do the next day they were rather Trient about leaving the resort.
Thank you for appeasing the algorithm 😃
Pleased you prefer this style, this is how they will be from now on.
Thank you.
Yep, I would never go on a cruise ship!
I prefer videos that aren’t as refined. They feel more personal and real.
Thanks Shane 👍
Haha that's a great example! Aldi for the win 🏆
Really good point Libby. If you know your values, hit spending will surely follow.
You should of cruised on a tug boat rather than a luxury Virgin cruise. Would of been more interesting less predictable.
I love that!
Generally speaking, this video could have ended at the 5-minute mark. I value your experience and have enjoyed your other videos, but I had to turn this one off 1/4 of the way through because I got the message. 🙂
Understood. Can't expect anyone to enjoy all our videos.
8:53 I think it’s fair to say a good majority of your audience. I’ll very much like me and a bloody skinflints. I’ve never apart from one car when I was young took HP out. I never buy anything brand named whatsoever and if I do get a new car to me, it’s always at least 3 to 4 years old as far as electrical goods are concerned as you say they always come down in price the next year so wait till then
Skinflint, haha if I didn't know you were British, I do now 😃.
We're the same. Spending money is difficult to do for us. Value always comes first.
Absolutely. Get out and adventure eh.
Great content.Thanks
Glad you liked it!
So, I’d own both: when you feel like being poor, then you will by my crappy goods. When you feel like being rich, then you can buy my luxury goods. Choose how you want live and whatever way I am there to sell something to you.
If you don’t have the money, do not step inside of a store to do window shopping. Better yet if no money to fund the credit card do not use it.
Ive been in Thailand now a year & Ive lost the desire to keep getting the latest of anything, ive been possession driven most of my life, not any more
Looks like we've travelled that same path!
@ yes & our team look like going out the football league !
Come on Ollie
Have you read "Richer Wiser Happier?
Honestly? I did not notice significant differences in style in this video, very similar it struck me
That said, I like that style!
Agree with the thrust of the video. I am guilty as hell of buying designer shirts these days, but in mitigation I have, in the main, followed the advice given here all my life and am therefore now in a position to be profligate in some ways like this particular example. Sensible in most other ways
Never ever really made those types of mistakes you mention
That is also a very useful point about value and cost. If you can more than afford something and have diagnosing independence then you can enjoy guilt free.
I've got a bag for life. I used to be able to get a free bag at the supermarket, but now the thin bags cost 5p.
I might buy something designer if I find it in a thrift store. On sale😄
Yep, that's a great way to do it.
Ahhh that's cool. Nice way to be... you're not concerned what people think, you're concerned with getting from life what you want. I like it.
Not everyone wants adventure, people skimp and save for a lovely luxury holiday and look poor the rest of the time.
I enjoyed the style of the video. I don't like the 'Look poor' thing, though. I see it all over You Tube. I think it's a bit insulting to people who really are poor. Looking poor isn't a choice for some people. I understand the idea but I don't like the choice of words.
The best thing about money is it gives you security and freedom . Don't waste those things on stupid cars !
Yes, money should but freedom, not more stuff.
I like the tangents. I've been known to go on a few myself. Love your content
Thanks Mark
What would you waste it on? Food?
Virgin are just the best cruises !
Can't disagree with that. Incredible service.
If I won 5M, I'd change noting except for opening a deposito and put it there so I get a bit more interest.
We're in the same page.
Have you thought about cycling across australia?
Blimey! Is that even possible?
@2GoRoam ha ha that's funny... we are in Perth... thank goodness for trees and the shade they provide otherwise I would be a crispy critter at the end of our long hot summers... a vehicle with air con and a trailer load of water will you give you a fighting chance. Love your work Neil.
Thanks Sue. Yes we'll stick to an Aircon option 😀
No problem, I am poor....
No.... you're different to me and that's totally cool 👍
That's brilliant. What a great way to teach children about the value of money.
I'm 55 and seriously considering retiring soon, although I'm already self-employed doing something I enjoy which is low-stress.
I really enjoy your videos. Great insights that make me think.
Are you going to tell us where your property in Spain is in 2025...
Yes we will. We are waiting on the TV show being aired before we do. We have a whole series of videos planned. There has been a delay in the TV show. Looking forward to that getting out there in the world.
@2GoRoam is it a TV show dedicated to you & yours or for instance... A place in the sun
It is, yes.
@@2GoRoam 👍
95pc in life is SHOW OFF
Could you have retired without selling your house?
Scared to sell up with no base for later but we would be FI if we sold? 😝
Thank you Neil
looking forward to see your 2025.
It is a bit rich to say "Look Poor" when you are cruising in luxury. Do you really need the trip from point A to B? 😆
