Although we tend to focus on the financial planning for retirement, there are several very important non-financial aspects of retirement living that we touch on today. We hope you enjoy the video and also join us for our world travel vlogging adventures each week. John and Bev

Retirement is wonderful if you have two essentials - much to live on and much to live for. Invest wisely and get good returns.

The key to making money in stocks is not to get scared out of them. An important key to investing is to remember that stocks are not lottery tickets. get a financial assistant

After our last child left for college, we were on a plane to Italy. Amazing trip. We watched older people struggle on steps, roads, etc. We agreed that when you could financially afford to travel, you often could not physically.
We have been traveling frequently since. We are also in our 50’s.

You guys are awesome! Such an important message. When I was 17 I started working in a medical office and many of my patients were in their 70's and beyond. Several of them told me, "Don't wait! Do what you want to do now, when you are young!" This seemed like great wisdom that was being shared with me and I did not take it for granted. So I took their advice. My whole adult life has been peppered with "mini-retirements". One of my mini-retirements was spent driving through Mexico in my early 30's. I was blown away by happy the people were even though so many of them had so very little in material wealth. It was a big aha moment for sure. Things do not, cannot, make you happy! I'm now 64, just newly out of semi-retirement (from 58-63) for an enticing full-time work opportunity i could not refuse. My family thinks I'm nuts. But I am certain that when I reach the end of this lifetime, I will not look back with regret. Playing it safe is not a good use of the precious time on this beautiful blue orb. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! You are a gift to many I am sure! I love watching you two. ♥

A local pastor we know who retired a few years ago gave us advice we hang onto all the time. "Retire into something, not away from something." Even though we are 7 years away from early retirement, we are already making plans. I love doing disaster relief work. I got involved with a large, nationally known group 2 years ago. I have done several projects with them and continue to take their training so I can do other jobs. Some of this planning does make us a bit sad, as we will be letting go of a few things, but we know what we want in our retirement which includes a lot of travel, volunteering, and work some fun jobs that we never had an opportunity to do.

If not sure how to start, just start small with saving for one overseas trip a year. It takes discipline to save and stay out of debt by not buying stuff to "keep up with the neighbors". We started at 50 and glad we did as we're now early 70's and still healthy & active-thank goodness. Have lost too many friends recently. It's not been easy as we had to keep working in order to support a parent and help a daughter with custody during a nasty divorce. Those two things alone would have paid for a cruise around the world! We're headed to Asia next year and are so grateful for all your ideas & videos! Thanks for all your hard work!!

Oh my gosh! "Starting Over" is on our "retirement playlist" too! My husband retired in December of 2021, two months after we discovered our dream - to live in the UP of Michigan on Lake Superior. I am 11 years younger than my husband and we made a seven year, long term plan that has decreased over time as we have worked tirelessly to make this dream come true. We purchased a home three blocks from that amazing lake in a small town, nine months into our plan and sold our home in SE Wisconsin nine months after that. I moved in with my mom and he and the cats moved up north! I have a year before I retire from education and our plans will be complete just over three years after we saw a magazine in a rental cabin that started our journey. "If I am dying, I want to come here," he said. I said, "If you want to die here, then why aren't we living here" and the rest is history. Our dream is to explore the UP and Lake Superior through Minnesota and Canada in smaller trips. This area calls to us. It is home. I backpacked the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in high school, shared it with my husband and our two kids over countless summer vacations. Every year when we left, I would cry while saying goodbye to the lake.
We still struggle with staying positive and fighting the urge to question why we didn't "play it safe" and "keep the house so the boys can come back an stay in their childhood bedrooms at Christmas." Living apart is difficult at time and we often wonder why we have challenged ourselves so much when we could just be "relaxing" and building a three season porch or redoing the kitchen. But our boys have encouraged us to live out our dream, excited to have a place to explore when they visit and create new memories. To leave a place you have lived your entire life is scary. To choose a path that others think is crazy can leave you feeling alone. Your channel has been wind in our sails and inspires us to keep moving forward. Thank you!!!
P.S. Tom Petty's "Running Down a Dream" is also on our list as we drive the 6 hours between our two locations!😄

Great video. I think companies that offer 401K should also offer a workshop/class to think about what you want your retirement to look like. We never had that. When I told our financial advisor we wanted to retire early and travel in a motorhome he said, 'Great!' He told me many of his clients (with means to retire early) had no idea what they wanted to do. I believe thinking about your retirement every five years would be a good exercise. It's also easier to make a big change when you have a partner that is in sync with you. I feel that I have that and am very thankful. In all of of our financial planning I never worried about Social Security (we just assumed we wouldn't get it). What we did worry about was health care. One of the reasons I switched to a plant based diet was because of this. We may choose to stay outside the US so we can have affordable healthcare (and we have no issues and take no prescriptions).

Thanks for the note and a great suggestion on the retirement class! It sounds like you guys are aligned as well. We are heading back to Colombia in January for all of our yearly medical checkups. It is SO CHEAP and great quality!! We also had some tests done in Athens and it was also amazing. Healthcare in US is very expensive. Safe travels, John and Bev

We are still a ways off from retirement (I’m 48) but we know those years will be upon us sooner than we might want them to arrive. So we appreciate videos like these that help us prepare well. My husband is not interested in full time travel but it has been a desire of mine for many many years. What we do now is discuss what he is willing to do and then I plan accordingly. I get a little of what I want (travel) and he gets a little of what he wants (stability.) In the end, we are both happier because we have met in the middle and made sacrifices for each other.

I love your channel. We have just found it and we haven't stopped watching it! Your advice is GOLD. I've been on the fence for a while about retiring. Husband and I are in our late 50's. We love our life. We bought an amazing farm 7 years ago and have been DIY owner building for years finally moved to the bigger farm from a smaller farm on the edge of the suburbs last July. I just got a really great job, finally living a modern life off grid with horses, cows, sheep. I have saved enough retirement funds for both of us etc. A dream really BUT....I am so sick of DIYing (husband loves it) now that our projects are nearly finished and running a farm and working full time is ALOT! I want to travel too. Husband doesn't want to travel. He loves home. We also have active healthy elderly parents and are aware that we need to enjoy as much as them as we can now. So I just keep watching you tube and living vicariously through others. I love the idea of being a Flexpat. One action I am going to take though is to get rid of the clothes I don't wear and the things I don't use. That is a start. One option for having an adventure is for me to pack up everything in a saddle bag and ride the horse up into the high country for a few weeks (not far from home) whilst husband stays home (he does not ride). One thing is for sure, we do love your channel. We love finding out where to go for cheap dentistry. It is so expensive in Australia. Do you know anywhere to get teeth done SE Asia?

I have made a lot of money in the past few years, in fact passive income is no longer an issue, the huge problem is how i loose this money from foolish diversification, this January I have already blown my account of a million dollars investing wrongly, last year i lost a total of six million dollars from very bad diversification, I believe i will loose all my wealth and not be able to build anything from my passive income,,, I need serious help immediately I cant continue like this...really needed to voice this out here.

Really, I must say that I'm sorry for your losses, but they are not the end of the world; last year, I suffered a significant loss as well. A portion of my investments were in a pharmaceutical company, whose shares dropped at the beginning of the year amid worries that the company's drug would not be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As a result of all these losses, I stopped doing research and diversifying my portfolio; Admitting that I don't have the necessary skills, I found an FA who helped me enhance my portfolio once more, and it has been doing well ever since. I recovered my losses, and as of this January, in addition to my losses from the previous year, I have made an additional million dollar. Annette Michelle Walters search on line and explain your issues to her. She'll probably have a solution, I believe.

As a full time traveler I would say to focus on your health. Are you mobile enough? Life in the US is full of safety that we take for granted. Streets are full of holes in other countries. Stairs don't always have railing. Many buildings don't have elevators. Can you sleep in an airport? Can you keep your balance on a metro. Without good health, travel is hard.

Great video. So true about spouse alignment. My husband and I retired in April 2022. I had the opportunity to travel to the Holy Land this year but my husband did not want to go. That pilgrimage has been on my bucket list since I was a kid. I didn’t let that stop me. So I went with my church group. In a few weeks I’m traveling to Spain to hike the Camino de Santiago (Frances). The hike is about 70 miles with a group. Then in October my husband and I will be traveling to Dublin which has been on our bucket list for a while.

My health permitted me to aciebmve my bachelor's degree at age 61 and to continue pursuing employment in what I enjoy. My husband takes care of our small 1200 square foot home and lot. Such a great video - thank you! My husband and I are on the same page with just about everything as we prepare for retirement. We both want to travel as much as we can and we've saved to be able to afford to do that. But, my husband has other (costly!) hobbies that he wants to pursue in retirement and it will require that we keep our home base and our stuff. Luckily for me, he is not a "stuff" kind of person so overall I'd say anyone who knows us would call us minimal. As I say weekly, I appreciate your videos so much! Really enjoyed watching this clip was very informative. You are so right about health being important and to do things while you can and while you are able. Now we are not in the EU and my husband having health issues we do travel mostly Europe now but are always conscious of health insurance and costs etc as he is in his mid 70s and I am turning 70 next year. It is so important to do the long distance travel when you can too. We have been fortunate to spend time in Australia when our children were living over there and stop overs in Hong Kong Kuala Lumpa. Not quite as inspiring and life changing as yourselves and Debbie and Stijn . We do enjoy when going abroad to go mainly by ourselves as we find that you then get into the local way of life and to meet different people too. Keep well and keep enjoying x

We are both making the most money we have ever made in our professions and it is hard to give that up and begin spending rather than saving. Love your vibe and energy! So positive and inspiring! I have retired at the age of 50 and my husband has 3 more years of work left. He will be 55. However, he is taking a lot of time off work now - before he stops work for good so we can travel now…We are planning to travel the world so much more…

Absolutely, we have already traveled extensively, and we were able to show our children a lot of different countries as well…but…never enough of travel!😀

This is well thought out advice. I'm right at the beginning of the process of planning to live outside of the US and want to immerse myself learning the culture of my host country which I think will bring plenty of rewards. Thank you.

The last thing you said. I'm 45 now. But even before I hit 40 I always shake my head whenever my folks say "people here live up to their 90s."
I really just want to enjoy my remaining life while I have it. I don't care about getting rich.

Hi John and Bev, wow, great channel and great T-Shirts ;) Nice that you seek inspirational targets and that you try to inspire others as well. It seems to me that you are maybe more standing in middle of life then at the time in your working years. For us Ronald & Barbara, an interesting vlog since we want to go into early retirement in three years. I find it not easy since you give up your financial "security" your job and go into an adventure, at least that is what we want and need. My wife lived many years in the US, Canada, France and Italy and now we are going (back for me) to the Netherlands for retirement. Thats our first adventure and new step. At this moment we are busy with working and taking care of my mother in law of 92. Since we are both a kind of free birds, we looking forward for the "time after" all the obligations. I think it is good not to plan to much in detail, to get first a holiday of 6 months, get some distance from stress, work, daily live. Time and distance are mostly good components to think better in terms of what you want to do. Sitting still is not an option and giving up freetime for a passion and some voluntairy community work to help others, are surely topics we think about. Hobbies there are enough to start. And travelling is both a passion of my and my wife (fortunately). Thanks for some good thoughts and inspirational stories. Wonderfull to hear about some Vietnam Veterans going back to help to build something up for the local communities. That are stories that are warming the heart. Many kind regards from Switzerland and if you need some Europe tips don't hesitate! But I warn you, there is too much to see here, you need more then one lifetime ;)

Thanks for the video. Any tips on working with a spouse who may not want to leave their comfort zone, sell everything and live other places on the planet for 6 months or more. We have traveled enough that I think she has experienced the joy of travel, seeing new places, meeting new people. etc....

    • @RetirementTravelers

No tips on that, but we know for us it is helpful to have “planning sessions” where we can list our goals, dream destinations, etc. We find these good for finding compromise solutions. Best of luck, John and Bev

Another very helpful video! We love the freedom of retirement and being debt free! Our challenge is elderly parents who need our attention, so these days we are trying to travel a drive way or a quick flight from those who need us. Excellent editing loved the transitions to each one of you! Great job! ~Cara 😊

As a retired Home Health nurse, I saw so many families broken emotionally and financially with the burden (yes, burden, no matter how noble) of in-home care of aging parents. One person has to quit working in the primary earning years of their lives. Not everyone works remotely. Many careers, like mine, are impossible to do remotely. Additionally, most of these elderly are up at all hours of the night, depriving family of restorative sleep. Additionally, most doctors will not prescribe sleeping pills or pain killers for elderly. So, they lay in pain all night. My soapbox.
