Hi Katie, I was re-watching this video as I just purchased a few Molotows. My experience is that they are really opaque, even more so than the Poscas. My guess is that you perhaps should shake them really well before using them? Thank you so much for your always so informative and well thought out videos, I really appreciate them! 💚
Oooh that's interesting Roberta! Thank you, I'll definitely be giving them a better shake and trying again! I really like the colour range they have so that would be a great if they're higher opacity that way. Thanks for your lovely comment 🥰
i love acrylic markers/ paint pens too, especially poscas. they’ve always been my go to brand even though they’re pretty expensive because we can’t really find them in stores in canada 🥹 love the video though 🫶
I really like the consistency of the Poscas - when I started using the bigger nibbed ones I was a total convert! I hope they bring out more colours in that size 😊 Thank you for watching and commenting! 💖
Karin decobrush come in a huge color range but they are a brush tip with acrylic paint in them. They may be too small for you but you can buy them open stock and colors are gorgeous! 😊
Really informative video, thank you! You could always mix some of the Montana refills into your liquitex or other markers to make colours you'd be more likely to use, then they're not sitting unused.
Your caps get dirty because you overpump the markers. 😊 1-3 pumps is enough most of the time, though you still should shake before pumping to prevent leakage. The Molotows are extremely opaque, but they require good shaking (and possibly 'better' paper, ie. something less thirsty). I'm having a hard time with the Liquitex markers. Some days I really love them, some days I really really hate them. It's great that they're less opaque and work like regular acrylics (esp for fluid blends) but the shine and stickiness... But the nibs are so nice! I'm thinking of refilling all of them (big and small) with Molotow or Montana refills (btw, loving your yellowish green Montana 😍) when they run out of paint. Or maybe try adding liquid matt medium to some when they're almost out. But we'll see. I have the full range of Molotows in 2 & 4 mm but only a few of the larger ones (some own mixes, some pre-made) so I wouldn't mind having the Liquitex nibs extending that range. 😁 Acrylic markers are so fun! And no setup/cleaning! Thanks for the lovely video. ❤️ Your demo piece ended up wonderful, really inspired me to do quicker and looser work with acrylic markers.
Oh that's so interesting! So you don't need to pump them continuously until the paint is in the nib? Just a few pumps and then waiting for it to fill? Thank you for sharing that! Yes the paper is a great point, though I love just using these quickly in my cheap sketchbooks. I'd like to buy a few more Molotows as I think they have a great shade range! Totally agree r.e. Liquitex. I find that no other brands have the glossy sheen that they do! Great idea to refill them though, I'll definitely do the same if I ever use one up! I hadn't thought about adding liquid matt medium to them either, what an interesting idea! Lots of things to think about - thank you! 🥰
@@KatieMoody it's enough to give only a couple of pumps, replace the lid and stand the pen up with tip down. 😊 Takes a few seconds, and the larger nibs usually need a second go. But it's worth it to not flood the nib! And it won't get soft as quickly. To further diminish flooding and dripping/spills, don't pump while drawing. Instead, use an even pressure all the time. Unfortunately the pressure needed depends on the brand/line/size but it'll become instinctive soon enough. For me it's about the same as 2-3 in the 1-5 pressure scale for coloured pencils (1 lightest possible, 5 burnishing). So basically only pump when prepping a new pen, after replacing/cleaning nibs or getting back after long breaks (like weeks-months).
@@thinkerdreamersketcherspy This is so useful, thank you so much!! I definitely notice some brands are easier to get the acrylic flowing, others not so much! I'll take your advice into consideration next time I buy markers 😄 I recorded a haul video last week which will be published soon which had a few new acrylic markers in, so you'll have to forgive me when you watch it and see me still over pumping them 😅 Next time I'll know better!
@@KatieMoody haha, you're fine. 😁 To each to their own, but it gets me when people diss a medium/technique/product just because they're using it wrong. I think your attitude is just right -- you like markers but acknowledge there can be downsides/problems as well as things you've not discovered yet. I definitely was one of those people dissing things willy-nilly growing up! I thought Poscas were pieces of turd and threw them away, but now I know I just didn't know how to use them... 😅 (also, I'm actively working on 'destroying' some nibs because I want the wear and tear! and I do overpump to get certain effects so it's not so absolute) (( looking forward to the haul. I'm on an art supply no-buy and living vicariously through youtube 😎 ))
Hi Katie, when you mixed up your own colours in the Montanna did you use the Montanna paint or did you use another brand of paint? I was wondering if the Flashe paint mixed with air brush medium would work to give that matte look.
@@KellyC77 No worries! They were all mixed myself! For the light blue one, I started with a white marker and then just added in a touch of blue as I knew I wanted it mostly white and made more sense than just filling an empty marker with white anyway 😊😊

oh and you can go over the acyrlic markers with a bit water while they are fresh on the paper. This way you can mute the glossiness of the liquitex markers. :)
Thank you so much for sharing! That's really interesting, perhaps I just wasn't shaking them enough. I do wish the Poscas had a wider colour range especially for the thicker nibs. That's really good to know about the liquitex markers too, thank you! I think the smudging straight away afterwards also helps to mute the glossiness 😊
Thank you so much for the feedback! This is something I've noticed lately though I am a total novice with technical things like audio 🙈 I am looking into it for future videos! 😊

Also, poscas can be refilled but you'd have to use an alternative ink/paint 😊
Ahh I had no idea about this! Thanks for sharing Jaime - I'll pin this for the video! 💜

I love this idea of staying loose with the big markers. Staying loose can be so hard but I love the look it gives the art!❤️
It really helps me not get bogged down in the details! Thank you so much 🥰
You can try acrylic ink in a dropper bottle or the golden high flow acrylic to refill or alter the colors of your paint pens!
Oh really!! That's a gamechanger if that works - I'll have to try it! Thanks so much for sharing! 🤩
The markers with pencil and neocolor on top (your example right at the end) creates a great effect 👌
Thank you so much 😊 Definitely my favourite way to use them!
I didn't realise there were so many different brands that made them now, this is super helpful ❤
