Great comparison! I think I'd like the Tombows more as markers for writing or calligraphy, whereas I'd prefer the Ecolines for a painterly effect and blending colors. I do love that the Ecolines are refillable and include a spare nib.
This is such a fantastic video idea! I've been preparing for a trip abroad and more than anything else (wardrobe, accomodations, restaurants, etc.) I've been fretting over which art supplies to bring. 😂 OR rather, which to leave behind. As a mixed media artist, it can be difficult to really pare down choices because depending on the weather, the subject, the location, how I'm feeling, etc. I never truly know which supplies I'll reach for more than another. Some days pencils are more prominent, other times they're just a finishing touch, some times I'll resort exclusively to paint, or rely solely on brush pens!
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Oh 100%!! It's so hard to know what to take isn't it?! I always want to take so many of my art supplies 'just in case' 😂 Like you say, it can vary so much depending on our mood and also what we want to paint! I really love the variety of being a mixed media artist but when it comes to travelling it makes things very hard indeed 😅
Morning Katie, lovely review thank u. I didn't realise that the ecoline were refillable, has the turnaround spare nip and that they did the refillable bottles.....the ecoline have been in my basket for ages! i must purchase come black friday, hopefully they will b reduced a tad. I have quite a lot of empty brush pens, that u will will water and i think i will purchase some of the dropper ecoline colours and mix muted colours in them, instead of contaminating an original ecoline colour pen. Love Alli and Bella XXX
Aaah thank you so much Alli and Bella! So glad this video was useful 😊 I don't think they advertise the refills or spare nib enough, it's such a good selling point! Love the idea of using the empty brush pens with the refills too! I've also seen people fill them with normal ink and it works really well!
The moment you said ecoline was refillable you won me over. I chew through art supplies so quickly i hate it when i cant refill them, it's a lot of waste and a lot of money.
thank you so much for the video! 💖 I've gotten my first few ecolines just recently and I'm still learning to use them, but now I'm also interested in tombows 🤔 despite their similarities, I feel like both are different enough to provide different results in some cases and to serve different goals in creating artworks, if that makes sense. again, thank you for an informative and interesting video! 🥰
It really comes down to what you're going for. If you want the juicier effects, Ecoline. Otherwise maybe Tombow. I have Tombow and really like them, although one of my reasons for following some of your videos is to maybe get encouraged to use them and my other markers more. I think that whenever you get the Royal Talens paper wet, it pills, so the wetter the marker, the more pilling. That said, I adore my Royal Talens sketchbooks, so thanks for making me aware of those too! Now that you have little spots on your green sketchbook cover, you should paint it with acrylics! I've gotten to where I only buy the Kraft Royal Talens sketchbooks because I paint them. It is so fun as the sketchbook becomes a way to display a picture. Thanks for the video.
I didn't know you could paint on the Kraft RT sketchbooks! What kind of paint do you use? Do you modge podge it after to ensure it doesn't come off? I'm also curious if RT pill with wet paint. That's what I'm afraid of, and why I haven't tried a RT before. I can be a little "slap happy" with my watercolours and gouache, and I love layering different media on top. 😅
Yep I totally agree! I love the Royal Talens sketchbooks because I'm not precious at all, but I do have to be a bit cautious with how much wet media I add! I was thinking of painting the cover too! I think I'll definitely do it for my new one as I've almost gone through all colours now so I'll need to distinguish them another way. I haven't seen the Kraft versions!
Just jumping in to say that I use gouache and acrylic all the time in my RT sketchbooks! I would say they're not suitable for watercolour though, but with layering and because of the thicker nature of gouache and acrylic paint, I've not found too many issues. It buckles a bit but considering the gsm it's impressive! 😊
Thanks for the video Katie. If the Ecoline peel off more than the Tombow, is it because they are wetter and the weight of the paper is not high enough to absorb it?
I followed your instagram and I'm just so happy to have found your videos on YT as well! Thank you for creating this very helpful content :) It does seem that the Ecoline pens can itself create a quite complete watercolor like finish, while the Tombow ones might need help of more layering and other media to have a more integrated look.
Oh thank you so much! 🥰 yes I totally agree!! The softness of the edges really help with that I think, and the ecolines sure are juicy for blending a bit like watercolour too ☺️
Thank you, so glad it was useful! I'm pretty certain that they're not lightfast unfortunately. As I mostly use them in my sketchbooks and for experiments, I'm not too worried but I wouldn't use them for commissions or original art to sell 😊
I like the Ecoline better in general, but think the Tombow is a better match for the beloved non-preciously priced Royal Talens sketchbooks. Pilling is my pet peeve.
We know a lot of companies put out the same product at two different prices. I'd love to find out if anyone knows an expensive line and what they put it out as in a cheaper line. For instance they do that with make up and alcohol.
Mine were mostly bought open stock! But there's a few sets I'd recommend that contains most of my favourite colours, such as the Frau Holle set and the Portrait set 😄
Yes of course! 😊 For lilacs, I'd recommend the 620 or the 623! The 620 is a little bit lighter but they're both a really nice soft purple. If you'd like one that's a more blue toned then I love the 553!
One of the huge advantages of the Ecolines is the endless customization of the shades! I'd love to see a video of you adjusting certain brushes 😍
Absolutely! Thank you so much for that feedback, I'll pop it on my 'to film' list! 🤗
Yes, please! 😇🩵🙏🙌
Oh my, this is genius! I had no idea the Ecolines were refillable and had a spare nib. Very helpful tips!!
So glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching 🥰

Oooh yes, excellent point! I know the Tombows are favoured for brush lettering and I can see why! Thanks for watching 🥰
Loved seeing the differences. And I would love to see your experiments with mixing your own shades of ecoline - that sounds really interesting!
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed it! I'll film that video soon, thanks for the feedback 😊
You can replace the nibs on Pitt brush markers too by pulling the nib out and turning it around. A little known trick.
Great video, so useful!
Oooh I had no idea - what a great tip! Thanks for sharing 😄

I’ve always wanted to see the difference. Thanks for sharing. Very helpful. Thanks!
Oh you're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful! 🥰
the ecoline pens look so bright! great comparison, I currently just have the one tombow ❤
Super bright! Thank you so much for watching and for all your comments and support on my videos! 🥰
This was very helpful Katie. I too would like to see how you customize Ecoline Brush Pens!
Thank you Nancy Jane! I'll record that video soon 🥰
You are my favorite artist !!! thanks for posting
Aw!!! Thank you so much 🥰💖

Awesome comparison! Definitely helped me determine which ecolines I'm going to add to my collection.
Thank you for sharing❤

The moment you said ecoline was refillable you won me over. I chew through art supplies so quickly i hate it when i cant refill them, it's a lot of waste and a lot of money.
I totally agree, the refillable aspect is such a huge positive! I really think they should advertise it more as lots of people aren't aware!
What a wonderful video. Instructive and so calmly and confidently explained.
Oh thank you so much! Really pleased you liked it 😊

You're welcome, I'm so glad it was helpful! Haha that's the problem with art supplies isn't it - we always want more 😂

Very informative for me, thank you! And I'd love a video of how to do custom colors in the ecoline brushes!
Thank you for watching and commenting! So glad it was helpful, I'll be sure to film that video soon! 🥰
Thank you Katie! The Ecoline performed much better than I thought, I don't have them but I do have have the Tombows.
The Ecolines are great but I do wish there were more softer colours! The Tombows are a great choice 😄
Really useful for deciding which ones to go for, thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks for the video Katie. If the Ecoline peel off more than the Tombow, is it because they are wetter and the weight of the paper is not high enough to absorb it?
Yes that's exactly it, Luisa! On a thicker paper they would perform much better!
Awesome comparison❤thank you sooo much🎉
My pleasure 😊 Thanks for watching!

3:48 omg that's so useful I didn't know that!!!
Yesss I love that they're refillable! 😊
Have you used the Tombow blending brush pen?
I have! I've got a video about it so I'll link it below! 😊

Fantastic video, great information. Thank you so much, Katie! Sondra Borrie
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed it! 😊
nice video, well comparison ✨
Thanks so much! 🧡
I have another question; are the Derwent drawing pencil like colored pencils?
Yes, just like normal coloured pencils but I find the lead quite soft. They are similar to Luminance pencils!
I like the Ecoline better in general, but think the Tombow is a better match for the beloved non-preciously priced Royal Talens sketchbooks. Pilling is my pet peeve.
Yes I totally agree, I also love those sketchbooks 🥰 I do wish the ecolines had more of a colour range but maybe they’ll introduce more!
We know a lot of companies put out the same product at two different prices. I'd love to find out if anyone knows an expensive line and what they put it out as in a cheaper line. For instance they do that with make up and alcohol.
I haven't seen this happen with art supplies, but if anyone has hopefully they'll share here!
Did you get those ecoline open stock or ina set and if you got them in a set..which one 😂
Mine were mostly bought open stock! But there's a few sets I'd recommend that contains most of my favourite colours, such as the Frau Holle set and the Portrait set 😄
I have been looking for a good light purple tombow, could you tell me what shades you have because you have an amazing collection?🫶
Yes of course! 😊 For lilacs, I'd recommend the 620 or the 623! The 620 is a little bit lighter but they're both a really nice soft purple. If you'd like one that's a more blue toned then I love the 553!
