    Two things, first I still have my KK Mk1 and have no plans on getting rid of it any time soon. Second and I've said this elsewhere but, I think they kind of missed the mark on this one as the lack of Maschine support is a big deal breaker (or at least for me). I'm surprised they didn't develop a product like the Akai MPC key 61 as I think the market is going that way with a standalone keyboard and drum pad all in one unit and NI has all the instruments and drum kits etc. for something like that. Maybe the lack of support for Maschine is a sign something like that is coming?(probably not though).

      @jefgibbons  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don’t think so… my guess is the amount of maschine users that also have an s series is pretty small… so they’re focusing on probably a huge percentage that don’t need Maschine… sounds strange, but this means they could go in a different direction with the maschine interface and not have to keep it consistent with their keyboards… this is just occurring to me right now!

    • @noodles4921
      @noodles4921 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Maschine 2 is out of date that’s why

    • @alchemistrpm82
      @alchemistrpm82 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It’s for the same reason that for three iterations of the S series keyboards, not a single one has had pads. When they’re not selling software (NI), they’re in the business of selling controllers. And they want you to buy a separate controller for Maschine. Period. I don’t think it’s much more complicated than that. I think the percentage of Maschine users who also own (or at least want) an S series is higher than Jef thinks. NI are just extremely poor at providing customers the features they want.

      @@noodles4921 Huh? Have you seen the age of the Octatrack? No sign of slowing that unit down. There are many using the Maschine, anything Elektron, or the Roland Sp-404. They are everywhere out there...just go to a few shows. I often see combos of any of these three as well.

    Imagine an “upgrade” that “downgrades” your workflow. I just don’t comprehend the thought process. Given the enormous Maschine/KK user pool, this should have been a layup. • @Jeremyelrick

    Appreciate you looking out for the user Jef. It feels bad that NI haven’t responded to all the update and feature requests from enthusiastic maschine users over the years and now look to be abandoning these users who have heavily invested in the ecosystem. I hope I’m wrong but they originally seemed to abandon the Maschine jam (such a good bit of kit btw). I, for one, would be sceptical about buying into any new NI products if they abandon the old Maschine mk3 and s2 keyboards - given past experience, I have little faith in NI making significant updates and supporting any new system. From a user perspective, NI should charge users for a major Maschine software update that would allow us to use all our existing hardware - the jam, mk3 and kk HW ecosystem was damn near perfect - the software needed work. Maybe they do indeed have plans but, either way, some communications would go a long way….

    So let me understand something. I have the A49 mk2, and want to move up. I had the S49 mk2, but gave it up because I couldn't read the screen very well; I'm almost blind. I also gave up the Maschine mk3 because of really had to work at using the screen; poor eyesight again. I really liked the Maschine software though. Are you.saying that with the S49 mk3, I won't have access to Maschine software? Now that would be a drag. I understand the mk3 screen has better resolution than the mk2. Is that right? If I have to, I'll think about the mk2, and just work it out sight wise. As Sanjay C. pointed out in a past video, I don't really need the Maschine hardware to use the software.

    Hi Jef. Thanks for the heads up. Well it is 4 months passed. Has anything changed or still you think Mk2 is a better purchase. I just have an opportunity to get a used KK S61 mk2 for 1/2 price. I also like to buy a midi controller that works well with different DAW and different synth parameters (ease and efficiency of navigating, assigning variables to rotaries, and basically a good companion for real time performance experience and not having forte in those areas just for Kontakt). I was originally thinking of Nektar T6 but that 1/2 price KK S61 mk2 is also very tempting. What would you do? DAW wise I am using Pro Tools, Cubase, and hoping to get to Bitwig ... or Ableton Live perhaps.

      Great question! Been using the MK3 a lot the last few weeks, and I'm getting used to the keybed... I still think I liked the MK2 keys better, but it really is just about what you get used to! The main things I still love are the browser and previews, as well as the lights to show keyswitches etc. You get all of that with the MK2. I am seeing more and more instruments getting the tab for folders of parameters and that's really nice, but it still feels like it's got a long ways to go. My only concern would be the future-proofing of the MK2, I think you still have a good few years with it, but we'll see how long they support it for! For the record, I do think the MK3 will be fantastic once they really get edit tabs and screen optimization down!

    I precipitated and bought the S61 MK3 a couple of weeks ago when I saw that it arrived to my nearby store, to realize hours later that there is ZERO integration with Maschine?!.
    Now, instead of enjoying this fantastic piece of hardware, I parked it aside and left it off all the time and continued using the KK A29, as it works better with my relatively new Maschine MK3.
    I tried to send it back to the store, but the store do not accept returns of opened and tried items.
    What a disappointment!
    I think this is a Komplete nonsense, as if I brought an Apple watch and figured that it works somewhat with Samsung and Huawei, but not the iPhone :-)
    I will most likely switch next year to AKAI MPC ecosystem if NI doesn't sort this out soon ...

    Wow! I wish I would’ve known all of this before taking the plunge and buying the new mark three machine and the mark three kontrol …. I thought I was doing something wrong and couldn’t get the two to communicate in the machine software. It literally does not make any sense. Why one of their controller keyboards not at least do some basic rudimentary control functions without having to go through a basic midi map like this is a third-party keyboard. Native instruments are crooks. This information should’ve been way more transparent and now I can’t return any of this. The whole purpose of going this route was to have an ecosystem that can communicate to each other. Literally furious at this and it’s purely misleading. This information his not obvious on their website and coming from older kontrol and maschine I would never have thought this was even a possibility.

    I own the S-series 61-key MK1 which for some inexplicable reason, Native Instruments just decided to not support anymore. The keyboard line that was made specifically for the Komplete Kontrol Software, is phased out. There's literally no good reason to do this other than to try and get you to buy another 800+ dollar controller.
    I had to uninstall the 3.2 version and install the 2.9.6 version in order to continue using my keyboard controller.
    Arturia would never do this. I purchased their Pigment software version 3. They gave me versions 4 and 5 (the latest) for free as an upgrade. Same thing with their microfreak. Just giving away riches....that's called good customer service. Take notes

    As mentioned on NI website:
    "Does Kontrol S-Series MK3 Integrate with Maschine?
    Kontrol S MK3 can be used with Maschine as a regular MIDI controller. This means that while you can play your plug-in synthesizers and instruments with your Kontrol S MK3 in Maschine via MIDI and use MIDI CC, there is no advanced integration such as transport control, scene change, etc. at this time.
    We are investigating opportunities to extend this over time as we evaluate overall improvements to the product experience that benefit the majority of customers"
    I won't buy Kontrol S-Series MK3 until advanced integration such as transport control, scene change, etc. of Maschine has been added.

    I suppose they have some strategy in mind that isn’t so obvious, but I very much prefer to use a keyboard over a pad controller and the integration with Maschine is pretty useful. I mostly use Maschine as a scratch pad since I feel Logic is a much more ‘logical’ (lol) platform - being able to record instruments for example is a pretty basic function of a DAW but is a chore with Maschine, but sometimes you get into a flow and Maschine + keyboard is nice.

    As owner of a Mk 2 88, I haze ZERO understanding or use for their new Mark 3 concept. Like Korg's Nautilus compared to Kronos, the Mk3s are a poor man's controller keyboards, not giving keyboard players remotely enough freedom to get assignable hands on usability. - not even talking of Maschine users. And they haven't even provided touchscreen functionality to make up for missing controllers. They obviously went for easy accessability of few NI core functions on a few knobs and buttons, massively cutting their costs while still overpricing the new devices - which is NOT what all keyboarders I know and talked to really want. NI will learn their lesson, I guess...

    I posted over at NI's video how it was a strange choice to remove Maschine support on their S MK3 for their stated reason of not many people using it like that, but at the same time knowing they will release Maschine 3.0 sometime in end of 2024 where the update might actually increase users pairing their SMKII with Maschine. If anything why would they not wait until Maschine 3.0 to see if there is an uptick in people using the Maschine stuff and then remove it for S MKIV. Wad such a premature decision. I also mentioned to them maybe they should create Komplete DAW as a bridge for Maschine and Komplete Kontrol.

  • @mjrisinsd6836

    I remember the whole reason I bought the MK2 board was to use with Maschine because I wanted to use a keyboard and didn’t want to use two controllers. So sad they nuked the functionality. I think it has to be said as well that NI has a software identity crisis. Which is it NI? Kontakt, Komplete Kontrol, or Maschine. We only need one piece of software that does everything and uses one controller. Figure it out. Maschine is a better for me personally because it does all the Kontakt sampling stuff but also lets me bounce from PC to Mac without worrying about file type. It runs Kontakt for God’s sake, so just put everything in Maschine and be done with it. The silver lining is the MK2 boards have lost nearly half their value and still probably have enough of a life left that they are a good purchase. I am just really struggling to see what people find great about the new board. Seems like an obvious shrinkflation to me. Less of everything for more money. I really hope that they drop something like the MPC Key 61 for Maschine users, but I feel it’s in vain.
