    Thanks as always for your creative, thoughtful, and BALANCED perspective! If only all of we responders below were as fair and balanced as you. 🙂
    You asked about Freelance Soundlabs NKS templates. A couple of pros, several cons:
    Pros
    - A lot of 'non-NKS-compatible' libraries (e.g., Omnisphere, Keyscape, Analog Lab) have been made much more browsable and editable (are these words?) in KK and Maschine.
    - and fairly affordably, especially if you consider the amount of time these guys must spend to put together the database and image files it takes for even a single instrument/library.
    Cons
    - The $ and complexity will add up if you have a lot of products/user libraries you want to add. I have Omnisphere and two Sonic Extensions and a bunch of user patch libraries. Each of these are separate templates, which means separate co$t$, and separate installs.
    - Their template may not match the button/knob/parameter setup you want in your editing. (You built a MIDI template for Omnisphere that reflected your preferences in editing.)
    - You must use KK to use these templates. You don't have to with your built-in MIDI template.
    I would enjoy you doing a video on one of their templates (e.g., Omnisphere w/ Unclean Machines?), and getting your perspective on pros/cons. Oh one other thing you might like about their templates. You get to see the Omnisphere jpg. ;-)

    Freelance Sound Labs...if you haven't heard...this guy devotes most of his time to creating third party NKS compatibility (Komplete & Maschine) for a very broad range of unsupported VSTs - and it works like a charm. To date, I can load: Omnisphere 2, most of UVI like augmented orchestra, Quadra, Falcon (plus expansions), Steinberg stuffs like Padshop, Halion, Arturia Analog Lab, Cube, Iris 2 ...all within the KK environment...includes mapping, previews, tagging etc. He covers probably about 50% of the popular ones out there. Tested and works on KK MRK 2 and Maschine MRK 3

    I rely on MIDI templates for controlling external synths, so I've been holding off on getting a mk3 until they added this feature. It's finally here, and fortunately, they did a solid job on it, so I just got an S61 mk3. What an awesome keyboard! The keys feel fantastic. Aftertouch is really smooth and easy to control expressively. The screen is beautiful. A very worthy successor to my old S49 mk1.
    For most plugins, it's better to just load the plugin in Komplete Kontrol, edit the controls there, and save that as an NKS preset. You get better two-way communication, with the values on the keyboard updating as you change them in the plugin. Many controls have more useful values as well (like Hz for cutoff or LFO rate, time values for envelopes, etc., instead of just 0-127).

    Nice, quick tutorial Jef. I'm pretty pleased that NI have finally added custom setups. I have found a couple of things missing, most importantly, NRPNs. They're going to be pretty critical for hardware synth control. But otherwise, I'm pretty stoked!

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! How would you use NRPNs in this setup? I'm not ashamed to admit I had to do a google search ;)

    • @GerenM63
      @GerenM63 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jefgibbons I don't know if it's that big a deal with software synths, but when you get to the hardware you might find that things aren't as flexible. NRPNs allow for more controls than just CC, and a lot of more modern synths are going beyond what is allowed for in "regular" MIDI, both in number of parameters and range of control.
      In software, you can pretty much aim a CC at whatever you want, but in hardware, the various parameter numbers (CC or NRPN) are usually hard-coded, and in many cases, the CCs will follow a loose industry standard. That was kind of restrictive, so NRPNs were developed for manufacturer and/or device specific parameters.
      I that makes sense...

    • @GerenM63
      @GerenM63 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jefgibbons I also don't know how much this will matter to most users. Realistically, most people will be using this to control VSTs that aren't NKS compatible, and for that, it's pretty darned close to perfect.
      I agree it would be really cool to be able to include a graphic, like most Kontakt and NKS instruments do.

    Can't wait to actually put the MIDI Template into practice. I do hope that a software editor eventually can be had; as a person with low vision, I'd hate to bend over to have to look close at that otherwise beautiful screen and having to look close to type. But otherwise, I dig the potential, especially or sharing and for working with hardware and not dependent on NKS only. I look forward to the other things to be added that's on the NI roadmap. As for Machine integration, I wouldn't hold my breath, at least for this year. I can see it possibly returning, but it's not on the 2024 roadmap, at least not the one that NI has shared publicly. That said, since the Kontrol S Series MK3 keyboards have a computer inside, I'm intrigued by what's coming. Thanks for the informative video and for sharing your thoughts.

Do you have to scroll through all your pages to remember which was osc1 page? Or can you jump straight to OSC1 controls from a main page or something? At the very least allow you to assign an image to appear on each page so you can visually see what this page of controls does quickly.

      It’s not really necessary. You can switch templates with the previous/next buttons in real time, each with different title. For large control sets like say Roland Zenology, I just set up multiple templates labelled by section (filters; amp envs; etc).

    • @oobesan
      @oobesan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, and another reason they should have gone with a touchscreen. Imagine jumping from page 1 to page 6 simply by tapping that on your screen. I remember making this argument for a touchscreen when it was released and getting crucified by "pros" on reddit and the NI Community forums for how stupid a touchscreen would be on a MIDI controller. It's not like physical controls and touchscreens are mutually exclusive. I agree that adjusting faders and knobs with physical controls is superior to just a touchscreen. But a touchscreen is unbeatable for browsing and typing. The solution is, obviously, to have implemented both. I would have happily paid another $100 for this keyboard if a touchscreen was an option.

    • @mjrisinsd6836
      @mjrisinsd6836 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@oobesan there’s just so much nonsense in their ecosystem that needs to be fixed it’s getting pretty ridiculously. Having MIDI templates is great, but like you said a touchscreen is basically a standard feature on today’s instruments. Another thing is being able to map the darn buttons in plug-in mode. I actually think the MIDI templates are better than plug-in mode unless you need more than 128 cc mappings because I can map button assignments.

      @nico5 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jef! To the best of my knowledge, Omnisphere, like many (or most?) plugins doesn't send MIDI from their controls, but they send VST automation (in addition to receiving it). So using the DAW (like Cubase) or another plugin wrapper to effectively provide the bi-directional translation from hardware MIDI to plugin VST automation is the only way to truly take advantage of hardware like Komplete Kontrol or Maschine. And then you might be better off just using one consistent template on the Komplete Kontrol, and do the mapping to the VST in the DAW or wrapper. Might also be possible with the Komplete Kontrol Software acting as the wrapper around Omnisphere?

    • @st0rmchild
      @st0rmchild 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, and that's why MIDI templates aren't a good fit for controlling plugins. They're meant for controlling external, hardware synths. For plugins, it's better to load the plugin in Komplete Kontrol and edit the controls directly in there. That will provide two-way communication, and in most cases, more useful values than the standard 0-127.

    • @nico5

      @@st0rmchild Yes, however unfortunately a lot of classic synth gear uses a lot of MIDI SysEx rather than MIDI CC for parameter control, and I doubt that the new Mk3 mapping is SysEx capable. So yet again, you’d need some sort of additional mapping hardware or software as a translation layer. Except this time it would be MIDI SysEx rather than VST Automation. And in that case, might as well return to a single Mk3 map. The problem with most gear is, that it goes for the stuff that makes marketing copy read well. But advanced integration is not a real priority for most. As so often, a nice piece of hardware is limited by its firmware/software. I’m typing this on an iPad - a classic example of the software not measuring up to the hardware.

    this should have been included at launch along with the Maschine integration BIG BIG BIG FAILURE form Native instruments as mainly using Maschine2 as my DAW and then LUNA as DAW for what not possible in Maschine2 I been so much disapointing by the choice of Naticve instruments all the request user asked they don't do then but just want to sell us software and hardware, finish with precipitation.
    we want Maschine3 as a full DAW the best DAW and all crazy innovation, all iZotope plugins and pluging alliance all NKS1&NKS2. and KEEPING UPDATE ALL HARDWARE AS POSSIBLE
    then new softwares and new hardwares with best features possible and TOUCH SCREEN it is a MUST to have NOW
    my Keyboard S1 MK1 not updating anymore, I got a keyboard S2 MK2 too, Maschine MK3 AND Maschine JAM who doesn't have anymore update too it piss me off

    • @bodhibeats8257

      Yes and no. The mk2 does have MIDI template creation and editing. However, that is done in Komplete Kontrol software, not on-device like it is on the mk3. And, the mk2 implementation is not as comprehensive as the mk3 one is. But in general: yes, you can do this kind of thing on the mk2.

    The workflow looks awful. Like I get that you want these templates to live on the keyboard so they can operate midi devices without software running on the PC/Mac, but why isn't there an editor for the PC/Mac? Never mind how much better a touchscreen would be for entering labels - there's a qwerty keyboard right next to you that you could be typing on if the software was well thought out. NI, it seems like they have good hardware people (or they use contractors for the hardware), but they have 1/10th the programmers they need for the number of products they sell.

      Editing templates on-device is actually pretty quick. But it does allow you to export templates to your computer, and they're just text files, so you can edit them in a text editor if you prefer, then import it back to the keyboard.

    Native Instruments is like one of the worst companies in the market. They literally sold us an unfinished prototype with a very very limited feature set. And now it has taken them one year (!) to give us midi templates back, that we always had with MK2. And the Maschine integration is supposed to come sometime in the future. Maybe in one year or maybe in two? This is unbelievable. Imagine buying a premium car and paying the seller and then he's like "Oh yeah, the tires. We deliver them in 12 months to you. Oh and the engine will come at some point later. Because our telemetry data showed that cars are just standing still for the vast majority of time. So only a small fraction of our customers are actually using the car to drive. So they are not that important to us. Thanks for your money. Bye".
