This looked great to me. Instead of just giving them housing and food, this place teaches them to read, write and speak Italian. They do volunteer work around the community so they have something to do and learn more about the culture and people by interacting with the people and give them a respect for the community they live in. The academy gets them jobs, which through their own hard work like Keita's can become permanent.
You could tell Sambou didn't want to be there, he kept complaining and coming up with excuses. It showed in his work which is why his employers would then not offer a permanent contract. While Keita was willing to work hard and was rewarded.

What a great idea. We should do something similar in Australia. I joined the British Army when I was 17. I signed on for four years. At that time one had to complete those four years and the only way out was to get married, be pregnant, or get a dishonorable discharge and nobody wanted that. The 6 weeks basic training was very tough but the discipline helped me to become the best I could be. I laughed at the bed inspections which I also had. At our base the bed had to be made a particular way. The inspection consisted of the officer running their hand across the bed and if it had any lumps they would plus the sheets and blankets down. If you came back and you found your bed like that it meant that you had to 'barrack' your bed for a week as punishment. To barrack your bed meant stripping it every morning and folding it into a particular way and of course after work/classes you had to remake your bed. There"s nothing wrong with discipline and expecting something back from the migrants,.The program seems worthwhile and obviously works for those who are prepared to work towards being accepted and getting permanent residency.

Every country has their own heritage, customs, foods, culture and people. It would be a sad world if one day we go from country to country in Europe and find the same thing. No more blonde blue eyed sweeds in Sweden, and Italy being all cafe latte. If you are smart enough to immigrate in these tough times you’re smart enough to make changes in your own country.

If you don't have discipline, you will accomplish nothing. They are being cared for - and if they want "freedom" from responsibility, then they can go home. They owe Italy their efforts to integrate - all immigrants have to integrate (I am an immigrant, btw). My father had us learn the Pledge of Allegiance FIRST THING. We were to use the vernacular of the country we came to. We worked hard, got educated and followed the law & we were LEGAL - why should others not be held to the same standard?

Wow.....want a HUGE difference from living there in 1985-87...The only place where you would see Africans would be on Milan's Via Tunisia OR Italy's version of 125th street Harlem. That consisted of Egyptians, Sudanese, Lybians, Ethiopians and very few west Africans. And Eastern Block European and Spanish from Spain HOOKERS were almost everywhere in Milan, even soliciting in front of Police stations...
