Inside Libya's Detention Centre Hell: Kidnappings, Rape and Torture | Libyan Refugee Documentary

  • Thousands of refugees are trapped in Libya’s hellish detention centres, where abuse, rape and extortion are rampant. They live in subhuman conditions, awaiting someone - the militia, Europe, the UN, anyone - to decide their fate. We investigate the entire detention system, how this traffic works, the role of the militias and the way in which their control is exercised.
Officially, Libya’s 26 detention centres are run by the GNA, the UN-recognised government in Tripoli. In reality, they are in the hands of the militias that control the country, who see migrants as a ready source of cash. The European Union finances the camps but then takes no responsibility for what happens there.
This is an important documentary of political denunciation, with significant testimonies, that succeeds in telling not only the story of human trafficking in Libya but also the background of the migration policies implemented by European states. The wise and calibrated direction manages to offer great control to the narrative, letting the audience think about what is happening in Libyan detention centres and what it means to “migrate” from that African land.

I travelled to Libya in 2016, It was hell. I got kidnapped two times and escaped and by the Grace of God in 2017 I finally crossed the Mediterranean to Italy. It wasn't even worth all the suffering and trauma that I had to go through. There isn't a big difference because Italy was worst. I was depressed and almost committed suicide. I stayed in Italy for 3 years and willingly decided to go back to Nigeria and that is the best decision I have ever taken in my life.

"All my hope is to go to Europe". What kind of a dream is that for a young man? Why not stay in your country and make it better? Why abandon your own land, stay and resolve the century old problem. Why take it to Europe?

Some just want an easy life and they think Europe will give them it. For them, that’s way more preferable than staying in their own country and working hard to make it a success. Were Europeans just given a nice life? No, they had to work hard to make it prosperous, but some people don’t want to do that.

@MM Your words are true to some extent; unfortunately, that is not the full truth. Once you read the history of Africa, you will know that they have the resources and the manpower. However, Europe has always sought to take the best manpower to build their countries and still does so, extracting every kind of resource as they please. They create wars in Africa to sell weapons. What you don’t know is that Europe would freeze and starve to death if not for Africa. So just take a deep breath and watch.

As a black woman, I really wish black men would fight for the right in their country so that their citizens, both men and women, are treated as human beings. It seems like running to another man's Patriarchy is a solution to many black men. It's one thing to travel to a country. Versus migrating because of despair in your own country. The truth of the matter is other countries don't want the degenerates in their country, so they're gonna look at you as suspicion. I will also say that many countries of color the women are badly treated. Do you like property or sexual items? And they haven't really evolved in that way. So the whole society ends up being not so Great for the general public. Everybody wants a visa. If they don't like it, they should do what Europeans did over centuries to live in prosperity They fought hard to change systems, worked hard all day - women and men, they always reinvented...that's why in Europe is better. Thousand migrants from libya already testifyed about the torture, slavery, abuse, starvation....over there for many many years now (since 2015).
Crossing the mediteranean sea can lead to death. Many died or were taken back to Libya.
They are just wasting all their money, energy and time on this illusion of Europe. Those money could have helped them get a better start in a safe african country. Racism between african is temporary until they speak language and integrate well.
Europe is already trying to find solution to keep migrants out. They do it with Turkey, Poland, Morrocco...and even Libya. Italy paid Libya to take migrants from the sea back to Libya.
So even if in Africa is not good. It’s still better than wasting all those money on smugglers for nothing and dying on the mediteranean sea. This journey will make them poorer, traumatized and old. @@djb.8507I remember an Ethiopian with his family spent 16 000$ to try to get to Europe from Libya. They had to pay 3000$ - 4000$ each.
He said he sold lots of their land to get that money. But they were caught by libyans coast guards, ended up in detention center and later asked to be deported back to his country. He regretted wasting so much money.
But he still hope to get to Europe someday. African countries need to teach patriotism. They would rather spend all the money to gangs/mafia/smugglers than their home countries

Marie Kimbi that is true. This is the reason why I think it's good what is happening in Mali and another country. We as people need to stand up and say no to the puppets that are governing some countries in Africa. But the thing is Europe and America are changing and its not for the best, they are changing for the worst. In a few years, it will be hard to survive in Europe, especially if you don't want a chip in your body. Without that chip, you can't buy or sell.
