regarding the image: it's pretty frequent that a pitch deck features "borrowed" artwork to suggest the marketing direction but they don't really mean to use that literal image. my guess is they gave it to a fiverr web person and said "something like this" without specifying that it needed to be replaced. the person who passed on the deck might have been another hired hand from fiverr themselves and not even known. it's lazy and indicates that the owners didn't care for sure but could easily have been accidental from that perspective.

Late but can kinda confirm? When I'm designing websites i often use frames/images of "Megumin" from Konosuba as placeholders to either test out looks or functionality. well there is still a few issues with this as a "place holder"
      1. if it gets posted publicly or spread like this they can still be sued from the rightful owner even if it was an accident
      2. as callum said it was cropped (you could argue it was going to be a styncil to be traced over which is also illegal for marketing/profit revenues, dankie vs activision is a good example of this)
      3. if was a random image they cropped for testing/placeholding they should label it as such or have text expanded across it so a mistake like this wouldnt happen

    • @legatelaurie
      @legatelaurie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@GGG_gaming 1. You probably wouldn't get sued at this level. CDPR would issue a cease and desist and the image would be taken down, end of.

If i played the devil's advocate... and that's for my entire post...
I'd say the trailer frame was from a game-pitch folder, folders and presentations where game designers use footage or screenshots from other games that have a style they are going for for their new game. The orchestra for the Skyrim OST was given the Techno Viking by Jeremy Soule to show them the game's overall vibe, because they couldn't show them game screenshots at that point without breaking NDA. But that means that Midnight Society's web dev also is one of the guys involved with the concept, which is wild or they have a really tiny team at that point. The "Wallet Address Unveiling" is probably because they don't think that most of us Doc fans know how to even make a wallet ourselves. For the e-mail login i think you already have described the best possible outcome in your video - user data security. And when it goes into currency i find no way to make this make sense in a good way... unless the Doc actually goes full Nintendo, like Nintendo did with the Nintendo Switch, and "produces" and sells the NFT at a massive loss initially in hopes that it takes off eventually. In a way guaranteeing that this project has a long life because there is no way to rugpull something that slowly starts in the negative and climbs up together with a game project.
And if i didn't play devil's advocate, this seems like something either shady or super naive on the Docs part. Basically worst case could be crypto influencers that got him to start a NFT project alongside his game just like they did with all the other celebrities in USA the past few years. Every celeb has some sort of NFT involvement, or had it and completely faceplanted with it. I don't think the Doc is cynical enough to pull something shady with his followers, unless the switch to TH-cam made him so bitter that he doesn't really care anymore. But why would he then show his face all of a sudden everywhere like he does now. He would make enemies if he pulled something shady and now suddenly reveal his real self.
Maybe i'm naive with giving him the benefit of the doubt, and even if i hate NFT and will stay away from it for all my life, i wish him luck with both projects. And i rather become a naive old man than a cynical one myself, cynicism literally drains everything of any fun that could be had in life.

4:09 I did it all the time back when I was a web designer (I'm now a server-side programmer). When you're designing a site, it's common practice to use copyrighted (and sometimes even watermarked) images that match the desired aesthetics and color scheme. You use these images until the final images have been provided to you. This is perfectly fine so long as it's only for internal purposes during the mockup and design phases of the project. In this case, it's likely a CSS background image that has a center-left position placed on it with no-repeat (meaning it doesn't need to be manually cropped). Oftentimes this will have a generic file path like "/assets/images/bg.jpg". Then when you've been provided with the real images, you just swap them out before publishing. I honestly believe that is a legitimate mistake.
Anywho, I do agree that this NFT crap is getting ridiculous.

Buying nfts with fiat isn't abnormal. Your concerns are valid, but none of this is abnormal, and the vast majority of the time its fine. $50 risk is also extremely cheap inc. gas; and no, average gas is not $85 per transaction. Its a fraction of that. If you are worried about your $50 don't buy. And tbh if you are worried about your $50 just get out of crypto altogether.

The whole bit about the cyberpunk image in the first 5 minutes, honestly I'm not sure why Callum is having a such a hard time with it being a mistake. You'd be surprised how often in commercial environments stuff like this is done as a placeholder to match the aesthetic they're going for and outright forgotten. I mean I have tons of issues with the whole midnight society thing, but this particular fiasco is pretty normal human error behavior. As far as no one noticing, I mean again, it's easy to miss these things. You ever listen to an audio book and the dude/girl reads the same line 3 times and forgets to cut it out? Mistakes happen, especially obvious ones. I mean to be sure it's possible it was intentional IP misuse, but it's just such a nonissue for me.

    Hey Callum. A few things.
First, really enjoying all your content mate, keep it up.
Second, this sounds incredibly scammy and I have a bucket of popcorn ready to watch it all go down in flames. Lol. However!!
Third, as someone who has built software on the Internet for 25years, I think there's a couple of red herrings in here, specifically the Cyber Punk image and the Login Token system.
The first sounds like their discount WordPress developer used it on their local machine to get the design straightened out while waiting for real content. Lorem Ipsum text, stock images, and all sorts of other fake data are used galore in this sort of thing as just a matter of course. They forgot to replace that one and then pushed to prod. Human error. I would really hesitate to read anything malicious into that, Okham's Razer etc etc.
The second thing is a very common architecture when you don't want users to be able to create their own logins, whether that's because they have to negotiate a contract, be vetted, or any number of other reasons. I work for a Real Estate SaaS and we use this exact same token + email based flow. Our sales & ops people create the login and then press a button for the system to email the approved users at client company XYZ. I can think of a dozen other sites that do this as well off the top of my head, and several hybrid where one class of user can register directly but you have to go through Sales to get the other type of login. it's just a gating mechanic.
Again, the rest of this sounds hilariously on par with every other snake oil scheme in this space, and I look forward to further coverage from you and the usual suspects.
    Cheers.

I think you misunderstand what a fallback-image is. It was probably a placeholder while they were developing the website, and it wasn't removed. A fallback comes to action only if the original content doesn't load, in this case the video. There are not many occasions where this could happen, so it basically went under the radar while testing the site. This can happen in web engineering/web design. Yes, they uploaded it intentionally, yes they cropped it to their needs, yes they took this image knowing it's from cyberpunk 2077 but only to use it as a placeholder while developing the site while it was not online because they had no footage until then, Simple as that. But they, and I'm quite sure from a logical perspective, didn't upload this purposely on the official website and tried to let people think it's an image from the game xD I'm pretty confident with that, that would be pretty damn stupid. I mean, CP is not an unknown game...
// In addition to that. »Why do they use a picture from cyberpunk?«. Well, because it seems to be a good reference for the look they are aim for. I mean, imagine going in a feedback round for the website, and you have sunny landscape with happy rabbits in the header... the website wouldn't look »midnighty«. When developing, you work with placeholders which should be near the look you want to add later on. You can't finish renderings beforehand just to realize that they don't fit and start rendering again. It's all a simple process in developing. You give this topic much more attention than it deserves. Can't say anything to the other stuff, I'm just here to clear the first part out from a perspective of someone who's working in this field.
