When I was young, the construction was estimated to take 300 years, which is consistent with the great cathedrals of the past. It is amazing how much computer guided stone cutting has sped the process up and it will be finished in my lifetime. A finish in 2026 after starting in 1882 is actually a very fast construction rate, considering how intricate the artist expression of the building is.

Yep, technology speed up the construction a great deal, and yes, expectations have changed a lot! When I was a child people thought they would never see it finished (I'm almost 40 now)

The average time to build a cathedral here in UK has been 250-300 years, with Bristol Cathedral taking almost 700 years. Sagrada Familia has so far been supersonic in its speed of construction.
But they didnt have the technology during the medieval ages/early modern ages that we have nowadays. Over 130 years is such a long time even for such kind of construction.

There is also a huge political problem which might delay the construction:
The two squares in front and one at the back were supposed to be parks, like the ones on the side, forming a green cross with the basilica in the center. The facade actually needs to take half of the block it has in front in order to build the stairs. The problem lies in that construction of residential buildings was allowed on those squares, with some legal clauses stating buildings should be demolished when the construction needed the space. Now the day is getting closer, and there are families living there, not only that, the landlords make a shitton of money renting the flats to tourists. So there's a heavy lobbying and press campaign to halt construction indefinetly.

I was just there in September. The interior is complete except for the pipe organ. There will bw a battle to demolish those apartments for sure.

This building is considered fine wine at this point the longer the construction lasts the better it gets.
When I first visited in 1977, I asked when it would be completed. The answer was "give us another 50 to 100 years.
It seems the low end of the estimate was correct. I hope to see it finished, although I will be nearly 80 years old.

I visited the La Sagrada Familia last August. From a very far distance, it really looks like a big rocket ship. Then when I visited the actual site, its absolutely stunning inside and out

I went to see it today! My second visit, it's stunning.
I first saw La Sagrada in 1967 while in Spain for my honeymoon. I saw it again in March 0f 2022. Neither words nor video can adequately describe its astonishing appearance. It should be on everyones; (religious or not), bucket list. It should not however be described as a 'cathedral'. There is already a cathedral in Barcelona, a dark, grim, monstrosity and the contrast couldn't be greater. The Sagrada is light, colourful, and airy!

Building Cathedrals usually take 3, 4, 5 or even more centuries. I know nowadays we have more technology, but still a big cathedral with a very modern architecture. So only one century and a half it´s not too bad.
I went to Barcelona to see la sagrada familia I Walk upstairs the train stop and turn around one of the streets and I see that majestic structure front of me still feel the emotion.
I'm excited that it's almost done! Just a few more years to go. It's definitely on my bucket list of places to visit before I die. It doesn't surprise me at all that it's taken so long. It was too ambitious a task back in the 19th century. Technology needed to catch up to make it possible.
"The la" is "the the" and therefore obviously redundant, and hearing it so often is making me twitch.

If you think that takes a long time. Remember, the church of Notre Dame took over 200 years to complete.
There’s a small shop off to the side of the building. You can see examples of how Gaudi used natural shapes to design the interior. Pure genius.

I love how it already looks heavily eroded and decayed. Adds a very oppressive and dark atmosphere. It's like something you would have to fight through in a fromsoft game.

to finish the Duomo di Milano it tooks from 1386 to 1965...
It took hundreds of years to complete the other cathedrals as well

I was visiting the Sagrada Familia in 2001 and they told us it will be finished by 2012. I believe that church is a huge business and for that reason, it will never be finished because they are building something that Gaudi never draw.

I visited the Cathedral about 5 years ago. It was impressive but not my favorite place. I prefer a more traditional look.

Il duomo di Milano lasted some 600 years to be completed and the Barcelona cathedral itself, about 500. One hundred years is nothing when It comes to big churches.

It because of weathering. I hate how weathering makes old buildings look tbh, especially the cologne cathedral being virtually blackened from industrial emissions when it used to be light colored as well

Gaudi did leave plans for it after his death, they were just partially destroyed when anarchists during the Spanish civil war smashed into and torched the crypt and workshop.

As I understand it, it is now being paid for entirely by public subscription. It takes as long as it takes. I hope it tops out in 2025, as planned. Been many times over more than 50 years. I have my own great record. Will go in 2025.
