    Yes, all of these movies are great, but being someone who grew up during World War II, I absolutely love "Saboteur."
    Yes, it is the earliest of all of these films and most people would consider it a relic of World War II.
    For me, the plot really keeps you riveted and its ending (death on the Statue of Liberty) went beyond any death scene up to then!
    Oh yes, the other films are excellent Hitchcock, but I adore his early British films and "Saboteur" walks the same path as "The 39 Steps."
    It is hard to evaluate Hitchcock movies because each are unique and all of his films are masterpieces of filmmaking.

    Great review! I had the pleasure of seeing "Family Plot" in its initial run in 1976 and loved it.I was a high school senior at the time and it was the only Hitchcock film that I had seen in a theatre. It was not known at the time that it would be his final film.. It is still a favorite of mine. An interesting side point... I had seen it in a "first-run" theatre at the time. As films got a bit older, they would add a second feature to it and it would play in cheaper second run movie theaters. I remember that after a few months after I had seen it, they dug up "Psycho" to play with it ( usually the added feature would be older, but not that much older-perhaps no more than a year older-but they obviously wanted a Hitchcock double feature)...and ..It was a "dollar" theatre!- Yes.. literally you could see both Hitchcock movies in a theatre for a buck!. It only played for one week as those second run theaters usually changed features weekly- I was planning to go, but sadly there was a death in the family the last night that I could've seen the films together. (By the way, there really weren't many "dollar " theaters back then--most of those second run theaters may have have cost a buck more or so.)

    North By Northwest was allowed in the Masterpiece collection in exchange for Universal letting WB release Spatacus in their Stanley Kubric set.

  • @unityoc
    @unityoc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    North by Northwest was only part of the big set in some regions, I've got the U.K. release and that's only got the 14 Universal films in it. I doubt they have / had the worldwide 4K rights. Hopefully we don't have to wait for the 65th or 70th anniversary for an individual 4K of that. The Trouble with Harry "pops" the most because it's shot in VistaVision, i.e. a larger than regular 35mm negative.

      Third volume will definitely be released. Have heard the 4K masters are done and ready to go, just a matter of setting the date. I’m almost certain NxNW won’t be among it though. I personally can’t wait for Frenzy!

    North by Nortwest is a Warner Bros title so wouldn’t be included in a Universal only 4k set. Got the UK vol 1 and 2 only watched Family Plot great scene in the car with Bruce Dern he was also in Marnie. I believe The Trouble with Harry May have been Shirley MacLaines debut performance.

    I love Hitchcocks films and have the 4K Volume 1 and will definitely get Vol 2 when the price drops a little. At RRP its just a bit too expensive for me to justify. Like you say, if it contained North By Northwest (I realise its owned by another studio) or Rope I would have bought it in an instant.

  • @JacobFrey

    Thanks for telling me about the movies, Ken. I already owned everything from the previous "collection"release, but I don't have (and have never seen) any from this set. I gotta get this.

    It's interesting this 8 month old video of yours popped up in my feed as I only just ordered this set last week lol. However like with volume 1 i ordered the UK edition as it has slightly better packaging. I already have all these films on blu ray as part of the massive House of Hitchcock box set but I'm very happy to check them out in 4k as the first volume looked really great (not that the initial Blu rays are bad, they are also fantastic but the 4k res and HDR really add to these movies).

      You still have the set with you?
      Are all the 4k dics working well??
      Actually I'm asking coz I wanted to order this myself but I was really worried about getting the 4k dics scratched since this set has such bad packaging.

    • @darrenblizzard3851
      @darrenblizzard3851 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@princesmith8008 yes it works fine. But that's why I went for the UK sets as they have different packaging to the US sets and not prone to scratching.

    Great review!! In terms of Marnie and the aspects of her being sexually attacked, it was made after the Birds where she had issues with Hitch due to abuse as seen in The Girl Movie from 2012. Hitch has a lot of his women characters lying, stealing and cheating. It is a difficult personality flaw of Hitch and makes some of his movies uncomfortable.

    No I didn't purchase that Alfred Hitchcock Collection Vol.2. I have a Hitchcock Collection boxed set on DVD for $5 at Goodwill and it has a lot of the master's movies. I find ridiculous that in this day and age they do a set with a handful of movies for a premium so they can divide it in several volumes to make the most out of it earn the most money. Ridiculous! I am only buying my very favorites or rare on Blu-Ray or 4K. But for those that don't have these films or are beginning to collect this is the way to go. Me I am good with my DVD boxed set and the multi-movies multi-disc sets. Good reviews and cool video.👍

    I don't know how i feel myself. the first set had at least 2 DTS-X upscales .. and theoretically could have have all of them done. The second set has practically NO AUDIO UPGRADES? Which is 1/2 of my 4k release cost dependent "double dip" reasoning. Myself I like Max Movie Minutes in my collector sets in Simple Straight forward (Movie Shelf Friendly ) packaging... Yet these sets both seem a packaging nightmares Between the "Scratch your highly scratch prone 4k"s " because they're in a sleeve of set one or the "Unfolds and movies can jump off the pins" 40" wide set 2. I'm gonna wait till they're in the bargain bin. They could've given us Single cases in a decently sturdy Box (but quite big on the shelf) version or big book style flip page versions like Lord of the Rings/Hobbit Extended Edition Trilogy sets. there are so many fails in these 2 sets.. and it heartbreakingly sad... I didnt buy the blu-ray sets because as 4k began to come out i've severely dialed back my blu-ray purchases ESPECIALLY on Large Sets. And Hitchcock Sets were one of my most anticipated offerings. They could've done so much better

    You didn't even mention about Bernard Hermann's scores for 'The Trouble With Harry or 'Marine', he is so closely associated with Hitchcock I'm surprised that you didn't give him a shout out for TTWH, since you liked the film. Hermann even called the theme 'A Portrait of Hitch' on a compilation album. When you listen to the music in the film you can image the portly man shuffling about. I'm not trying to bust your chops Ken, it's just I really love Bernard Hermann's music and feel he contributed so much to his trade and always try to give him a mention when possible. Were you also aware that the actress in 'Marnie' who played Lil Mainwaring was the same actress who played the senator in 'Silence of the Lambs'? Her name was Diane Baker (I actually met her, quite nice). And speaking of North by Northwest, I can't wait 'til it comes out on 4k.

    • @midlevelmedia
      @midlevelmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was aware he did the score for those. I loved the scores as well, but like I said at the top, I wasn't going to go as in depth as I usually do because of time. I did love the music, so I do apologize for glossing over the great Bernard Herman.

    I agree the relationship between Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotton in Shadow of a Doubt comes off a bit odd. You'll notice, though, both characters have the same name, Charlie, so they are linked thematically. I think the filmmakers were trying to say the characters represent opposite points of view of how the world works. Teresa Wright is very naive and has a sort of pollyanna view of the world, while Joseph Cotton is extremely cynical and has let the world corrupt him. I think to some extent, both characters have their eyes opened by the other. Even though the film predictably leans toward favoring Teresa Wright's view of things, I think the movie challenges both points of view.

    When reviewing Hitchcock and something kinky or sexually seems off, it was most definitely intended.

  • @leoinsf
    @leoinsf ปีที่แล้ว

    In my book, "The Trouble with Harry" is the weakest movie Hitchcock ever made.
    It was the only movie that Hitchcock made where he tried to make a comedy but Hitchcock came to realize that comedy was not something he could really "pull off."
    "Marnie" was infinitely better than this movie.
    "Saboteur" was an excellent World War II move.
    Your evaluation is excellent, but I do differ with your choices!

  • @samuelstephens6163

    Even though I personally think The Trouble With Harry is garbage and one of the worst A-level productions ever made, I enjoyed your review and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Also: I'm not as sure as you are that Hitch didn't intend a pseudo-romance between the two Charlies. She was nick-named after him, and everyone seems to approve of the two being a pair. Obviously, she wouldnt be allowed to marry him, but I do think she is in love with the idea of him and the opportunities she thinks he represents.
