The 4K release fixed a lot of audio issues that were on the DVD and blu ray. Also, keep in mind that VHS and DVD were color timed for CRT TVs and often had a magenta push. I watched the 4K last night, and I thought it looked pretty good. I’m not going to claim that this is one of the best looking 4Ks in my collection, but it’s a worthy upgrade.
Does the Atmos mix retain all of the original music cues that were present on the original mono track or was it just based off the old remixes found on DVDs and Blu-rays?

I've just passed the melting stairs scene, I saw that as it being a true natural look, as the upstairs landing walls are blue, and some of the stripes of the wallpaper going upstairs are blue too. So moon lighting coming through windows would make that scene a little blue. I didn't see too much of it, and some of the outside scenes just before it also had the right blue lighting too. So it's the true norm, so far it's great. Hope this info helps you enjoy this movie more, from now on. As I think it's looking great for a HDR 4k movie. 👌
Nah man the old bluray has incorrect aspect ratio, too much digital noise and incorrect dvd-era color timing. While new release fixes all that and includes uncut version, OG audio plus atmos
Yea I noticed nancys butt was cropped out on my blu ray and that was a major bummer. So they fixed that

I was initially disappointed when I received the movie upon inspecting the packaging to see that DolbyVision wasn’t included, but as soon as I saw and heard the quality of this 4k scan, my jaw dropped in amazement. The quality and clarity of the Atmos soundtrack means it sounds far better than the blu ray version that I own. I feel enveloped in the sound, and its so immersive without ever being to loud or abrasive in places; very well done. Also the quality of the visuals are so sharp, vibrant, and clear with some grain, with the motion clarity on my tcl qm8 turned on and balanced priority, it looks so fluid and lifelike. Plus the added uncut gore finally! The aspect ratio that almost fills my entire television screen is also adds to the immersion. The packaging I still feel could have been done better, plus a new special feature or two but I am beyond happy with purchasing this release!!!

@@gameoverwehaveeverypixelco1258 i normally turn off all frame interpolation with my movies and just watch at 24p or whatever. However, with This particular movie, turning on smooth motion with motion blur and judder to 10 just noticeably enhanced the experience to lifelike, without looking artificial and no glitches or artifacts to speak of. Just an awesome transfer, and I love the color saturation and clarity!
@@mabusestestament with Dolby vision set to “off” on my Sony ubp x700 4k player, all 4ks default to hdr10. Now, in my television’s (2024 QM8) advanced picture settings, you can either set priority to “detail”, “motion”, or “balanced”. I choose “balanced”, which I prefer for hdr 10. Then in my tv’s motion settings, I switched motion clarity “on”, and was pleased with the results on this film. You won’t acieve the same results with every movie; with Arrow video’s Friday remake 4k, having motion clarity set to “on” introduces noticablecglitches and artifacts to both hdr 10 and dolbyvision (dolbyvision IQ with precision detail turned “on” and all tv motion and clarity settings normally turned off, I prefer).
@@gameoverwehaveeverypixelco1258 I normally turn off all morion and ckarity settings on my tv and just watch in 24p or whatever bc i don’t like soap opera from frame interpolation either, nor the glitches or artifacts that come with these enhancements settings turned on. However, in the case of Nightmare 4k, it only made it more fluid and lifelike without appearing artificial.
After hearing so much overwhelming positivity about this release as I waited for my copy to arrive, I appreciate your honesty. For me personally, the 4K is a worthy step up from the previous Blu-Ray, but much more noticeable in the daytime scenes.
I reckon that the likes of Second Sight and Arrow would have taken it up a notch and made all those night-time scenes (which of course, is most of the movie) look much richer, with some nice inky blacks etc.
As for the packaging - which let's be honest, is really important given the fact that most of us buying this are super-nerds who already own the film 10X over - this was a real mixed bag. Yeah, we got a nice steelbook with classic artwork in the UK, but the rest was all over the place.
The case... nice to see a vintage VHS effect, but how much better would it have been with that incredible UK poster from Graham Humphreys instead? The booklet... wtf is that? Zavvi showed an image of a hardback book, but gave us a booklet with a cheap, tacky cover (from NOES4 maybe?) and nothing but images we've seen before from the first film in a random order.
I'm willing to bet whoever did this was not a fan of the series and hadn't seen the film. The art cards are a bit basic and half-arsed - why not just some cool original lobby card replicas? Finally, the numbered certificate - 27,400 copies?! Am sure it was a few thousand when the pre-order went live.
Anyhow - first world problems - am glad we got a decent enough 4K, but I feel fans deserve some new special features. Now is the time to record some audio commentaries while most of the key cast are still around. The archival features are not bad but very dated. NOES2 gets slated quite a bit in the interviews, and I feel the US has since caught up with the UK in thinking it was overlooked.
And how cool would it be to get all the Dream Warriors back with Robert for a commentary?!
Here's hoping we get the sequels soon and then perhaps WB will give a boutique label the rights to deliver the boxset this series deserves - even if it means we all have to own Freddy's Dead in 4K haha
I’ve said before and I’ll say it again. Sony is about the best studio that does great work on 4k. They don’t get the credit they deserve far as transfers. They are about as close to boutique label work as you can get.
I gave in and ordered the steelbook, knowing this is the best we'll probably ever get of this. The audio upgrade and uncut version sold me.
Until some studio does a Dolby vision scan. Thank God I haven't bought that many Disney movies yet.
Just watched . the picture was better than the blu ray ,but the sound in atmos was amazing. Great movie steelbook is cool 😎
It worth the update. Looks so much better than previous versions.
My purchases of 4k restorations or new physical media is more for the atmos upgrade than anything else. Atmos is truly amazing and immersive when done right. Nothing else compares .
Been waiting for WB to give us Gremlins 2 on 4K, all we have is the 2012 bluray.
I think the old 7.1 audio is pretty awesome on Bluray. When the old school Nightmare logo comes up, and that Charles Bernstein score kicks in for real, it doesnt get much better. I am so interested to hear that in my atmos system. (7.2.2 setup… just sounds better than 5.4.2 in my room)

This is one of these classic films that needed the special treatment in the transfer to 4k but instead they seemed to put the special treatment in the limited edition box set with the postor books and cards

For Twister, I worked at a news station and became friends with the meteorologist...he had been there for 16 years already before I got there. I showed him the green out scene on both, and he said that the original is more accurate. The 4K pushed it a little too much.
Thanks for your review. While I think that Dolby Vision would help I think this is a great 4K transfer. I don't have an OLED tv, I have a pretty good Sony tv with a Panasconic player and I have noticed quite a few details that I have never noticed before.
The image of Freddy on the back is actually from Dream Warriors lol, so that's another re used image from another movie. If you look on the back of the Nightmare 3 VHS it has that same image of Freddy except in reverse with a blue background instead of yellow and red.

hi, that movie was made with 1080p digital cameras (Panavision Genesis)...maybe we would see an improvement in the HDR department, but it's only 1080p to begin with...

Yea I almost bought this when it released early on digital for 15 dollers. But I popped my blu ray in to check it again and noticed it was a very good looking blu ray, also there were no reviews yet. So I passed. Sounds like I made a good choice thanks for the review

We could have had an incredible box set from Shout!, bu t no, WB wouldn't let anyone license it from them because they're freaking assholes.
BTW, Depp said a few years ago he would have loved to have been apart of the Never Sleep Again documentary, but no one contacted him about it. I feel like studios are too scared to approach him for new features than him not being willing to do them.
I also got the box set. The packaging and artwork is great, the steelbook itself is sexy as hell but the booklet was pathetic. Pages and pages of pictures and no writing. Also I'm sure they said it'd be limited to 4000 units not 20 something thousand
I’m upgrading from an old snap case dvd. I’m pretty happy with the restoration. Especially the HDR. The reds really pop. I don’t usually care too much about packaging, but I do love the VHS rental look of the steelbook.

They fixed the sound stings, missing music in this though (not on the 5.1 track on the Blu-ray) and added the original lossless mono so I'm picking it up. I would have been ok with no special features and a perfect presentation with high bitrate though instead of cramming everything on a 66gb disc. They messed up on the cover art they really should have just used the original poster art.

No one’s talking about Devil 4K it came out Tuesday it’s definitely an underrated gem and it’s a great transfer from SF

Great video! Between the 2006 infinifilm DVD and 2010 Blu-ray there were some sound effects/music cues that were missing unless you switched the audio back to mono. Just a little tidbit is that I have some of my ANOES/Freddy Krueger Collection featured in the doc titled "The House That Freddy Built". The webmaster of the ANOES Companion website and myself were about to have our names in the credits but was cut due to time length. The Uncut version is only 9 seconds longer which is during Tina's death scene

I watched it last night and thought it looked and sounded (chose new audio mix) pretty great! The steelbook also looks much better in person, which was a nice surprise.

I don't like what these studios are doing now releasing variant cover art versions of their releases. WB purposefully put the original (amazing) poster art on the steelbook for the big box collectors set so they can charge a higher price for it. They are using just the lazy repurposed photoshop art for the slip and individual steelbook releases. Shame on you WB.
I have it pre-ordered. The Nightmare series is one of my few horror guilty pleasures. I like 3 and 4 better though, maybe because they were the first two I saw back when 4 came out. I don't have any of them on blu-ray, I only have the dvd set, so the upgrade is worth it to me. Assuming they carried over all the special features from the dvd box set, I don't really see the need for new features. The original ones were done pretty well and I don't need new stuff just for the sake of being new.
The last time I owned this film it was on VHS. So him happy to have the 4K. 👍
I loved this movie as a kid...
Until the end, when the mom gets pulled in through the window. It was so unintentionally funny that it just ruined the movie for me. I remember being in the theater, laughing, and yelling, "What the f--- was that?!"
@Windupchronic Wes Craven actually wanted the movie to have a happy ending. The scene with the mom at the end was added to the film and muliple endings which are still unreleased still exist! Hence why he didn't have anything to do with the sequel Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Wes did return for the third film which he produced but he didn't direct. And the whole Freddy jumps out of the movie and into the real world was his original idea for the 3rd film but Newline🎞said no. Hence Wes revisting this idea for New Nightmare released in 1994!🎩🧤🧣🎥

Great review, as always! Are the missing audio cues present on this release? There were some missing stinger sound effects on the DVD, and I believe it was ported over for the bluray too. The missing stinger effects occur when Rod grabs Nancy from the bushes, when Freddy enters Rod's cell, and when Nancy walks up the melted steps. Have those been restored? Just curious! Thanks!!
Yes, the missing cues have been restored in the Atmos track and the mono track is lossless DTS HD 2.0.

I got the 4k steelbook from gruv today and I don't think for that one the cover art is bad.
It’s crazy how bad 4K covers are from studios. I definitely hoped a boutique label would’ve released this. I feel like we’re at a point and time where studios need to just pass them off to better hands.

This is the DVD cover from 20(ish) years ago. The entire series was released with these god awful covers. I have no idea why the stick with it. It’s horrendous.
I don't get why it is so hard to use the original poster art. Just use what sold the movie in the first place!!

I got my copy of NOES in the mail yesterday and I watched it last night. I was impressed with the restoration. The color of Johnny Depp's red cadillac popped. I'm happy to have it in my collection

Its possible the movie may have been dark to begin with but was lightened in the home video releases until the 4k. EVERY release of Batman 89 from the VHS to the blu-ray were lightened, the 4k was the first time Batman 89 was actually the correct darkness level
@@lutherheggs451 For sure and by no means am I saying the color is incorrect, just saying it’s not what I remember and prefer from my many experiences watching the film.
The light and dark were off in the past due to the limitations of the formats. They boosted the brightness, which was the norm for many horror films on VHS and DVD.
Sadly, the only people who know the correct colours/brightness are the people who made it. Even then, if they sit in for the restoration, you have to hope they stick to that and not (as some do) start tweaking it to make it better (in their eyes).

The New Line Cinema Infinifilm 2-disc DVD set may still be the best transfer because it actually said on the back 'restored from the original 35mm negatives.'
I've been unimpressed by Vinegar Syndrome. Not just the picture quality but also their selection of restorations. Arrow has done some great work, but like others, they can be hit and miss. Warner has done some very good work on their huge catalog of classics. I received my Nightmare steelbook from Gruv yesterday and watched it last night. It is a substantial upgrade over the blu-ray in both picture and sound. I don't know if you're one of them but some people see that a movie doesn't have Dolby Vision and they automatically downgrade the release before they even watch it.
Not the case here. I’ve seen plenty of great 4Ks that lack Dolby Vision. And for sure this is an upgrade over the Blu-ray, just wasn’t as substantial as I hoped in my opinion.
I watched this digitally. I got the Ultimate Collector's Edition diabolic and the second one from orbit DVD. I figure I haven't bought any of those movies since the DVD box set in 99. I thought it looked good. I mean, it could have been better, but it was a lot better than I was expecting it to be. I didn't think the end sequence was in the mother's bedroom as blue as the previous releases, but again, I only watched it digitally so far

First time we ever seen him his face is ripped off like a skull Halloween decoration while he’s laughing. Freddy was still fun right from the start. The second one is definitely scarier.
The European version special edition has the steel book with the original art work.

Ken, the major studios are far from the only ones who don’t bother to give us new special features when they remaster a film to 4K. KinoLorber used to do it all the time. Though, to be fair, they seem to be starting to catch on. And let’s not forget Shout! Factory/Scream Factory. ‘Death Becomes Her’ got one measly featurette when they remastered it for BluRay a few years back and when they recently remastered it for 4K, they added zilch!
So, yes, call out the major studios for this, but also call out the cheap boutique labels that fail us as well!
Big studios are getting lazy with physical media packaging and not adding new special features to classic films.

Not sure what the problem is Ken it clearly states on my 4K digital copy purchase both on iTunes, Fandango, and Movies Anywhere Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. It looks Incredible the best it ever has.

I got it early and the 4k of a nightmare on elm street BARELY looks better then the blu ray. A nightmare on elm street is one of the best horror films ever made and we have gotten AMAZING releases for the texas chainsaw massacre and halloween and to see this released and thrown on a disc real quick just to make a quick profit makes me sick..
That’s because the boutique labels released Halloween and Texas. They are the only ones who care.

Color timing is such a difficult thing to review. It seems like you have to be a person that's seen a 35 mm print of a movie to accurately judge what the movie is "supposed" to look like. This is especially true when comparing a 4k to an old dvd or bluray, as a lot of them were rush jobs that did not have accurate colors, but it's what we're used to so we perceive any changes to be incorrect.
Yup I agree. That’s why I can only speak to what I’ve seen and how it differs from that.

We got that nice steelbook book with some bits and pieces here in the UK but I’m just getting the standard 4k.
I don't know why people care so much about dolby atmos, particularly for old movies. What should be the most important thing is having the original audio mix.
I read that the original negatives have been gone for a long time so there can never be a true 4k version from the original negatives.
In the end, we all just wish boutique labels would release everything.
I'm so over it. I wish this, I wish that. Movie companies know we like the stuff and they are constantly raising prices or releasing the same movies with a few changes making you want to double triple dip. I can't tell you how much money I've lost yes lost throughout the years with buying movies I love then a new version comes out and you get FOMO wondering oh maybe I do want Atmos or Dolby Vision etc. Nightmare is an old badly recorded movie that can only be enhanced so much. People start crying right away to much this or that just like the Cameron films.

Ken, great review video. I'm so glad you called out the color difference. That's been something I've been complaining about for years! They completely changed the colors when they released it in 4K to theaters several years ago. And I remember seeing it at the theater and being disappointed that the colors did not match what was on the original blu-ray release. It's the same thing they did with the Halloween 1978 movies. That movie has gone through dozens of color-timing changes. And now they are messing with the color-timing of ANOES.
@@mstevens372 and who says the original blu ray color timing is correct? Also you’re talking about a completely different studio now with Halloween. The fact is the color timing is more accurate now than that bluray. And the Scream factory Halloween is closest to its original theatrical look supervised by the original cinematographer
The vhs, dvd, and bluray color was off ...they always pushed red and warm for older tvs
Great observation about the slipcover art. Terrible. I actually think it’s even worse than The Exorcist 4K slipcover art that WB used. Pretty shameful.

I pre ordered that limited edition only for that original cover art steelbook. It was so friggin expensive. I paid 75€ (that's like +80usd) here in Finland. These new big studio limited editions are way overpriced and we don't even get proper transfer too often, just postcards and posters for that extra money!

My concern is that WB is going to put a weird filter on the movie or lazily done. I've never seen a studio so into putting a damn filter on EVERTYTHING recently.

Batman and Batman Returns teal filter with audio changes
Black Adam piss yellow filter.
Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, ZS JL had a grey filter.
Its like they either put a filter on it to try and cover things or its so lazily done the things may not even look better than the blu-ray

Sounds like maybe Dolby Vision could have made a difference. I wonder why more major studios don’t choose it rather than just HDR? Even a 10% difference can be worth it. I know it costs more but…

I remember the scene when Nancy is running up the stairs, the first time I watched it, the lights were on and then watched in later version and it was so dark, I see in the 4k it's dark and that is disappointing.
Something about that scene having the lights on made it more scary to me. Like it doesn’t matter if it’s dark or lit, Freddy is still coming for you.
That was artifical lighting not supposed to be there
Transfer is freaking phenomenal on my 100-inch QLED Hisense Projector and they included the original mono and fixed the audio sting issue from the crappy blu-ray... This dude really needs a new pair of glasses or a better T.V. cause this is by far the worst take i've heard all year.
Another thing about your review with the extra bonus features and you’re complaining about having no new features. Some people are dead that did these interviews again that should be brought up. It’s not like they’re around to do new interviews. I’m grateful for the 4K remaster and I hope the other movies in the franchise from Robert, England and West Craven,

I want to wait for a box set or individual 4K’s
These Boutique Labels would have given you a bettter Box with a better Transfer, but those a US or UK only releases. I am from Germany, and I like to have a German Audio Track. Big Studio releases have that because they make World Discs with many language tracks on them.
