- There is a strange phenomenon when someone gets kidnapped where they will sometimes fall in love with their kidnappers. It's referred to as Stockholm Syndrome, and in today's video we're going to try and find out what leads people to sympathize with their evil kidnappers.

This actually makes a lot of sense and not too hard to understand. When humans are cut off from basic human needs (like food, going to the bathroom, communication, entertainment) they become vulnerable and desperate. Then to think that their captor is the only person providing them these needs they become almost grateful for them and slowly feel an attachment towards them. Not to mention that when put in such terrible conditions, a person will have their standards lowered and will not expect much more from their captors than simple survival needs anyway.

I guess anyone would do what they can to survive, I'd probably be more sympathetic towards my captives cuz I grew up a Christian and we were always taught to be more like Jesus. If Jesus still loved and prayed for the people that beat him spit at him and get him crucified, then I'll do the same, but I would also want justice served and they punished. This can come in many ways, with thoughts such as "why was I the one who survived?", "I should have known better", "I should have told someone", etc. If you're asking about the original comment: the brain will go to extreme lengths to survive and try to make some sense of a person's current position, aka developing feelings for their own kidnapper. These lengths are mental disorders that will cause harm if/when the trauma is "over".

Stockholm Syndrome as a survival instinct pretty well describes what it's like to grow up in an abusive home. Everything terrible becomes so normalized that you convince yourself that nothing is wrong. Subconsciously, you focus on the little things that bring an inkling of happiness to your life, and start to ignore the rest as background noise. Then, you get confused and defensive when other people start noticing and pointing out the fractures running through the mask of normality that your family is wearing.
In my particular case, basic habits like cleaning, doing dishes, doing laundry, taking out trash, and even feeding myself - not to mention the long list of other skills needed to be an independent adult - were completely lacking. At times, it felt like my mom wanted me to never leave the role of her pliant doll to dress up and puppet around and brag about; like she never wanted me to gain independence or to disagree with her or to leave her dollhouse, because I belonged to her. What made it worse was that any independent choice I made was undermined and twisted around as something bad, and was blamed on my wonderful boyfriend as him "being controlling and turning me against them." Really, he was only helping me open my eyes to the reality of my atrocious family situation, and it required more than just his opinion. The opinions of childhood friends and the snapshots witnessed and commented on by current friends helped create a majority vote in my head that opened my mind to the possibility that my home life wasn't exactly stable or healthy.
My mom was always in charge of all of the vital adult tasks, and this made the prospect of running away from home understandably daunting. I did it anyway because I knew I had other people (like my friends and my boyfriend and his downright angelic parents) in my life who love and support me.
By far, the hardest part about running away from home is the fact that I do still love my family, and I intimately understand why they acted the way they did. Three years of intense personal growth, therapy, and success has not changed the fact that it still hurts to exclude my family from my life.
How are you now ? I hope you're alright and I'm facing the same situation but I don't have anyone in my support ...
