  • As several people have pointed out, there is a difference between real colloidal oats and ground oatmeal (see some of the comments below that cover it really well and why you might prefer one over the other). I should have stated clearly that by grinding and sifting the rolled oats, I was actually making a substitute for fine colloidal oatmeal to use in the soap. I've used them both in soap, but you may prefer to stick with real colloidal oatmeal instead of oat powder like I used. Sorry for the confusion! 😊
    This is an oatmeal soap made with lots of shea and cocoa butter that I made for myself during these dry winter months. Thank you for watching! - Holly :)

    Hi! This is one of my favorite soaps, especially during the winter when my skin gets super dry. The lather test at the beginning was at about 4 weeks.
    I should have my goat milk, oats, and honey lavender soap video posted in a week or so.

    Love oatmeal soap, I use it all year round and I can never keep it in stock for the shop. On a side note there is a difference between ground oatmeal and colloidal oatmeal. Oats powdered in a coffee mill at home is oat flour where as colloidal oatmeal can not be made at home it is a specialised product requiring specialised equipment in a manufacturing lab setting. Oat flour can not be dissolved in water (even if it looks like it may have) and therefore not as affective while colloidal oats can be dissolved completely and permanently giving it a much more potent effect on the dermis surface (as seen by the difference in price) I only mention it because there seems to be confusion on YT between the two products. 👍🍂🍂🍂

      Thanks for pointing this out! I added a pinned comment to help clear up any confusion and should have been more clear in my video I was creating a substitute with what I had on hand but not actually making colloidal oats. 😊

    Hi Holly, beautiful video and music.
    Just to mention colloidal oats and simply ground oats are two very different things. Colloidal oats are produced in a lab by processing oats in a manufacturing setting by boiling the oats and water soluble active compounds are turned into powder. It cannot be replicated at home by simply grounding oats. Colloidal means it never settles at the bottom and forever dispersed in a medium and cannot be separated/filtered out. So if you take USP grade colloidal oats, it would dissolve in water and never settles at the bottom, nor can be caught with sieve or filter of any sort, whereas if you take simply ground oats like you just did in the video, they would settle at the bottom. It also has certain efficacy guarantee that they measure in the lab for anti-inflammatory effects on skin for it to be called colloidal oats. That’s why it’s USP grade colloidal oats and not simply ground oats.

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely should have mentioned that you can grind oats as a substitute for true colloidal oats in soap, but that there is definitely a difference. In my experience, they have both worked well for me in soap. Thanks for mentioning this! I added a pinned comment to hopefully help clear up any confusion! 😊

    Hola Holly, te escribo desde España. He descubierto hace poco tu canal y estoy enganchada, me encantan tus vídeos y tus jabones. Llevo poco tiempo en el mundo del jabón y aún tengo mucho que aprender. No conozco tu método para curar el jabón con el horno, yo siempre los dejo 24 horas, los corto y después los dejo curar por 4 a 6 semanas. Pero entiendo que tu método acelera este proceso. Me encantaría ver un video explicando este proceso, la diferencia entre un jabón curado en frío y por tu método del horno. Me ayudaría mucho a seguir aprendiendo y crecer como fabricante de jabones. La diferencia es que con el metodo de el horno se acorta el tiempo de espera para poder usar el jabon. Tratalo de va gustar, es muy simple calienta el horno a 170 grados Fahrenheit o la temperatura mas baja de tu horno, una vez caliente apagalo. Mete el jabon en el horno y dejalo 3 horas dentro del horno, o toda la noche y lo sacas por la mañana. Cota el jabon y dejalo secar 4 semanas mas y listo.

      Definitely not a dumb question! I did lift the lid and look at the top of the soap. It had a gelled look to it that was much different that how it looked initially. I should have taken a video of it, actually, but here's a link to an article by Lovin' Soap with photos in case you want to see those. Mine didn't crack or wrinkle up, but it was completely dark all the way across. I'm not sure if it would have overheated or anything, but since the gel phase was complete, there was no reason to leave it in the oven any longer, so that's why I removed it at that point. Hope this helps!

    Starting my interest in making soaps. This may be a very dumb question but we can’t just copy your recipe right? We always have to start with what mold we are using and go from there correct? 😰😰

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a dumb question at all! Yes, you need to adjust the recipe for your mold volume. In case you need any help with that, here's a great article by Modern Soapmaking on exactly how to do that: www.modernsoapmaking.com/blog/how-to-resize-a-soap-recipe-for-your-soap-mold-imperial-and-metric
      Hope that helps!

      @@hollysoapmaking Just wanted to extend my gratitude, for not only your beautiful videos but for taking the time to reply to our comments. Your videos have motivated to try and make my first batch. I’ve been a stay at home mom for 10 years and recently just tried to find a passion and soap making sparked something in me! So very thankful for your videos.
