Brendan Fraser had done another role in the past where he experienced everything for the first time. A cool fun movie called "Encino Man" from 1992. You guys should check that one out as well! You know, if you can get past Pauly Shore having a main role. At least Sean Astin is in it.

As many times as I’ve seen this movie, until this reaction, I never noticed that when Eve is narrating at the end and we see her in the glass, she’s twirling an engagement ring on her finger. Probably because she doesn’t look down at it but is looking out at her soon to be father-in-law. It gave me a totally new feeling for the end of the film. Not “different”, just a more “happy ending” feeling than I had before. 😁

I'd always heard that the microwave oven was accidentally discovered when a scientist performing some sort of experiment as a part of nuclear research noticed that some chocolate melted near the device and they had to find out why, and then they turned it into the oven. I was 12 and living in Queens outside New York City at the time of the Cuban missile crisis. I do remember how scary it was and how through my childhood, the concept of an atomic war was deemed pretty inevitable, even if we didn't know when.
Different newspaper and magazine articles would publish maps of the city with circles centered around ground zero presumably in Manhattan, as to how much damage would be done for a certain sized bomb (as they grew in size). The smallest circle indicated instant vaporization, working outward to say we might have a few weeks before succumbing to radiation sickness.
All science fictions stories at the time set in the future, it seemed, had an atomic war in its presumed sequence of events, which only continued to raise the level of fear.
Most depictions focused on the blast damage, with the radiation threat over in a mere few weeks. We never even considered a nuclear winter possibility, so the idea was if you could hide out for a short time, you might survive but then face a hellish post-nuclear nightmare.
    Very scary times.

The microwave was invented in 1947 and the size of the unit and the price tag slowly went down over the next three decades. I remember going to college in '68 and there was a large snack room in one of the classroom buildings, with vending machines lining the walls. In the center was a microwave, the first time I had seen one. But I can't remember when I actually had one in my kitchen.

Brendan Fraser has a uniquely sincere quality. His emotions and tone and care for everyone around him makes the character come across so authentically. And I think that quality rubbed off on Alicia Silverstone and Dave Foley. They can project that on their own, I'm sure, but when the star of a film can bring that degree of it into the film, everyone in the film feeds off of it. What a great film.

I love this movie. It's perhaps the most wholesome movie I have ever seen, and yet it's not preachy and is very funny. So well written, so well acted. Brendan Fraser does such a great job of portraying a true innocent experiencing so many things for the first time. I tend to think of it as the inverse of another favorite of mine, Pleasantville. Instead of being a modern person thrust into a world of innocence and ignorance, it's a true innocent thrust into the modern world. The best thing about this for me is that, despite everything new that he encounters, Adam never loses his positive outlook.
