Hey Rob - this is no doubt going to get buried in the comments but I thought I'd put it out there anyway: Since you've been doing this series of videos about different and interesting players and instruments, I couldn't help but think of my bass idol - Michael Manring. That dude is seriously an amazing player with a crazy unique instrument - the Hyperbass. It's a 4 string fretless, 3 octave bass with really light strings, outfitted with extender levers on EVERY string, a bridge that can shift tunings with a lever, AND a pickup for every string in addition to 4 body pickups. The way he approaches and plays the instrument and just approaches music making is astounding, and to top it all off he's a super down to earth guy! I think that if you could get in touch with him and sit down to chat about the instrument and his style, it'd be a really interesting conversation for people to see. He really pushes the boundaries of how I've thought about my playing and how i listen to music, and I think it'd be really amazing to see him on and spread his work around to others. Love your work Rob, keep the amazing content coming! Edit: thanks for the likes guys! I appreciate it and hope you enjoyed the new music - here’s hoping rob sees!

This is how I feel when I’m jamming with electric players and it’s hilarious to me the differences between players from classical to electric. They’re both so cool in different ways
Businessmen and brands (the worst one Martin) try to make a vintage and historic market for guitar but these guitars are so overpriced! When this guitar is 270000 a real old guitar ( befor 19s ) must be 10 millions!!! My father's violin is older than this guitar (at least 50 years) it is not a famous brand but he believes it was made by a master luthier in Bavaria for a professional player. And i think it is at least15 times cheaper than it.
@@nmnmnm9509 we had a couple come to play in my orchestra class last year, the Man was a very professional concert musician, his wife was a film musician, hers was worth 1.6 mil I think? This really brought home to me how I felt after playing flat top and electric for 42 years at an advanced level, I took up classical. It was like the guitar deeply resented by lack of touch and expression. Still trying to catch up ten years later. It was good to see how Rob so quickly go from awkwardness to being musical here, and yet, and yet. Indeed, great classical guitar is soul and love.
rob: "is the idea that the sides would amplify it?" brune: "yeah we really don't know why they made it like this" literally everyone there for the next 4 minutes: "wow that's really loud" me: hmmmmmm...
You can see the sound hole in the internal back so the sound through a tiny channel and up the sides. I would assume that there is bracing that fans out from the rear sound hole so that the path of the sound is not obstructed.
I took approximately 3 years of classical guitar lessons and was around a lot of great players during that time period and wonderful guitars too.The torres, the 275k guitar is the most beautiful sounding classical guitar that I have ever heard
@Vernon Wallis value doesn’t just depend on raw materials, it also depends on history. Francisco Tarrega’s Torres is not for sale but if it was I guarantee it would be worth a whole hell of a lot more than that. Also Stradivarius violins cost 10 million on average and some go much higher, the reason being that Stradivarius himself died before he gave anyone the formula on how to make violins with such superior tone quality, and even the most talented experts in the world haven’t been able to figure it out since. Because of this, the only Stradivarius violins with that superior tone quality that exist are the ones he made during his lifetime, which is why they start at ten million each.
I have long believed "collector" is a form of obsessive-compulsive insanity. There are millions of dollars being paid for items every single day... and those items of themselves simply aren't worth it. But they're worth it in the insane battle arena of collecting. I can hardly wait for the wood on my guitar to develop a discoloring that looks like Elvis...
@Luther Blissett if it’s “just wood” and can be replicated easily then how come extremely cheap violins sound considerably worse than professional instruments
@Luther Blissett you do have to admit that the age of the wood used to build them does give them a uniqueness. Whether thats worth the millions people pay is up for debate but it is a tangible thing
The amazing part is how the sound depends on the PLAYER. When Rob plays those 100k beauties they sound like classical guitars. But when Brandon pulls the strings...maaan, you can just drift away. The style of approaching the instrument is crucial to the sound with acoustic instrument and here's the ultimate representation of this statement :) Thanks, guys.
google it...but basically there’s certain spots on the fretboard where if u only very very lightly fret the string and then pluck it, a light higher octave note will play. Brandon used those notes extensively in some of his playing, and it’s truly amazing.
@@isaiahhha7560 Almost right. It is not only octaves that you hear. Do you see? The octave is half the string, the other ones are some other fraction. You could check wikipedia or ask a music teacher for details. And try them all yourself. It's cool!

I was the UPS driver in 1979 for Sherry-Brenner In Chicago.. They were the supplier for the Guitars of Andres Segovia. I actually got to touch a guitar that he tested to buy. They were kept in a bank vault. I played $10,000 dollar guitars. I dreamed of someday owning one. I never did, but I learned to respect cheaper guitars that sounded great. It made me a better musician and I never forgot those days.
Actually many classical pieces were written (or transcribed) in Drop-D. For instance: Chaconne by Bach, Capricho Arabe, El testament d'Amelia, Choro de Saudade (which is actually tuned this way: EBGDGD) and many others.

I laughed especially hard when Rob made note of the 275,00 price tag and I was waiting for Marshall to jokingly say that it came with a $274,000 case. Everyone here was class act. You can tell and sense their deep rooted love for everything guitar.
I'm in the middle of researching for an assignment into innovations into classical guitar making, and the differences compared to steel string acoustic guitars. Right before I rewatched this, I was reading about all the great luthiers featured here in Making Master Guitars. Ramirez, Hernández, Hauser, Friederich and Torres. This video made me gain a new found appreciation for why these instruments are as special as they are. Putting them into context, they come from a very different time, where you couldn't just make 2 guitars sound similar with post-production tweaks, so players would shop with their ears, picking guitars that suited the way they played and that's definitely something that I need to remember going forward, designing the next 2 instruments that will take me to graduation.
I'm from Almería (where Torres made those guitars) and almost nobody knows who he was. But hey, we also have a saying: Nadie es profeta en su tierra (nobody is a profet on his land). Come visit us sometime in the future. We have a small guitar Museum 😁

I'd pay for that.
Just want to say these luthiers are very generous and kind. I’d never be presumptuous enough to think I could play such amazing instruments.
Hey Rob - this is no doubt going to get buried in the comments but I thought I'd put it out there anyway:
Since you've been doing this series of videos about different and interesting players and instruments, I couldn't help but think of my bass idol - Michael Manring.

I took approximately 3 years of classical guitar lessons and was around a lot of great players during that time period and wonderful guitars too.The torres, the 275k guitar is the most beautiful sounding classical guitar that I have ever heard
Kurt Cobain's guitar, used on Nirvana Unplugged, was sold for 6 million dollars. That's insane.
I wonder how much Lead Belly's guitar that Kurt talks about in that session being offered to him for 500k is worth now?

The amazing part is how the sound depends on the PLAYER. When Rob plays those 100k beauties they sound like classical guitars. But when Brandon pulls the strings...maaan, you can just drift away.
The style of approaching the instrument is crucial to the sound with acoustic instrument and here's the ultimate representation of this statement :)

When Brandon plays harmonics it was so mindblowing
i’m new to guitar and trying to learn basics these days. can u tell me what harmonics are?
google it...but basically there’s certain spots on the fretboard where if u only very very lightly fret the string and then pluck it, a light higher octave note will play. Brandon used those notes extensively in some of his playing, and it’s truly amazing.
Yes, he blew his mind. Poor him.
@@isaiahhha7560 Almost right. It is not only octaves that you hear. Do you see? The octave is half the string, the other ones are some other fraction. You could check wikipedia or ask a music teacher for details. And try them all yourself. It's cool!
