    I'm 35 years old, starting the chewing gum therapy at 34 and I can swear it works. At 16 I had crooked teeth, my canines were on top of all the other teeth, so I was taken to an orthondontist who extracted a perfectly good tooth to get his job done. I was left with a v shaped palate, an ugly narrow smile and puffy cheeks. My chin was retracted, developed a hook nose. So I stocked up on gum and one year later my face looks completely different: my palate is wider and my teeth look more straight, my lips accomodate my smile nicely without dark gaps at the corners. I started getting hollow cheeks, and the biggest bonus my side view. More prominent and horizontal mandibular bone , less double chin, and less childish. I know my bones didn't change at this age, but the teeth moved to a better position. Thank you Dr Mew!!!

    • @skinnybuddhaboy

      Your bones absolutely CAN move at your age and decades beyond.
      There's a guy who was on the Joe Rogan podcast a couple of years ago who's well into his 50's, and he only started
      using a palatal expander a few months prior, and he has widened his jaw by a huge amount and says that he has added
      a lot of extra bone mass and weight to his skull.

    Fascinating. I’m 39 and I’ve always had a very small mouth and a weak chin. It has gotten much worse with age, and especially during Covid, when I stayed at home with my kids, sitting in a terrible position all day. Because of this I developed bad posture and a forward head position.
    It was recommended that I begin injections to my lower face to correct this cosmetically but I would rather fix the problem as much as possible at the root before I go that route.
    I know I can’t do a ton at this age, bone-wise, but I have downloaded the app and began Mewing, along with the daily exercises.
    One thing I noticed is that my tongue was completely lying on the bottom of my mouth which I’m working to correct. I’ve also realized, by watching this video, that my tongue almost doesn’t move at all when I’m eating. Crazy. No wonder why I have developed these issues 😢

      No. If anything real eating is a better exercise. Two head of romaine lettuce will have a much bigger effect. Chewing a bolus is super ineffective and it doesn’t open up the whole system. Notice his giant jaw but tiny neck? Chewing gum also desensitizes how you perceive food and then slowly it. It’s like your brain wondering what’s up with this piece of food

    Dr. Mew, I couldn’t care any less on what kind of gum a patient will chew. This is a very interesting adjunct to the myofunctional exercises i have patients do. I have some concerns of the continous gum chewing for a long period of time though.
    Isn’t that like moving your knee joints for a long time, any effects on the TMJ . I always tell my patients not to chew gum for more than 5 minutes. Thank you for all your work.

    • @Orthotropics
      @Orthotropics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      Red Mouse,
      I am guessing that you are a dental professional. My concern is that we are all living in a very strange period in human existence. Nothing is normal, if you met a hunte gatherer you would have little in common. And they, not you, are normal!!!!
      I think that you will find most of the answers to your questions here;
      The Cause And Cure Of Bruxism And Clenching
      th-cam.com/video/k3tu7mJePGI/w-d-xo.html
      The main thing to take is that these people wore their teeth almost completely away if they lived to a ripe age (50 yoa), with little signs of any damage. Clearly we could discuss TMD as well, which I do here (th-cam.com/users/Orthotropicsplaylists?shelf_id=3&view=1&sort=dd in one of the play lists) which needs updating, but in general I feel that you need to keep the tongue effect and the mastication effect in balance and this is the modern problem.
      So it is a lack of balance not excess chewing which is the issue, so try Tongue Chewing th-cam.com/video/ZNocCJNicrc/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Dr. Mew, quick question on sleeping posture.
    Is there an optimal sleeping posture that we should try to achieve for proper facial development?
    Seems like this hasn't been a very much talked about topic despite us spending nearly 1/3 of the day sleeping.
    Is it better to sleep on your back, with no pillow, just a little folded shirt to lightly fit between and support the natural curve of your neck, which will make sleeping a lot more comfortable,
    I find that my posture is much better back sleeping and ditching my pillow, I'm going to continue doing this and see if i see any other changes.

      Good question. My hypothesis is sleeping on your side or stomach can cause your face to become narrower. Because then you lay on the side of your face. Think about how much pressure that is (it makes your face all wrinkled too, not nice) and the fact that the pressure of lips and tongue can already have a dramatic difference.

      DJ he diffidently thinks forward posture reduces an involvement. Which makes sense it would put more strain on the back erectors. Forward head posture also reduced forces of the tounge. You can try a little experiment arch your head back far and you’ll find the back of the tounge pull away from the roof of your mouth (assuming you know proper tounge posture). Foward head posture is essential arching the head back otherwise you’d be looking at the floor

    So I’m super confused… Dr. Mike said to never chew with facial expressions. I chew with no facial expressions as much as possible during meal and chewing gums. My question ‘tho is -and since it’s pretty obvious that Mike here is chewing those gums like there’s no tomorrow- can I chew (as in CHEW) gums with facial expressions? Because I find it quite difficult to chew gums whilst restraining expressions. I’m willing to bet it’s fine since Dr. Mike (at least in this video) obviously chews those gums without remorse.

    😂 My dad would always make me spit out gum when I was a kid. I became an expert at hiding and keeping it when I was able to get some. I would buy Bubble Yumm or other similar brands. I would save it in the butter compartment in the refrigerator or put it on the rim of my water glass. I think this would be a good way to do this exercise. Then you wouldn’t be eating all of the sugar from the new gum. And the bubble gum gum tends to hold its texture better. It is made for chewing and blowing bubbles.

    Here's a tip:
    "Classic Bubble" by wrigleys extra.
    Tastes great
    flavor lasts considerably long
    and most imporantly, gets hard in your mouth the fastest (thats what she said). I found that most trident and orbit flavors get soggy and break down from the saliva after awhile. Extra gets rubbery and elastic so it requires more work to chew. Thus giving your jaw muscles a better workout.

    Hi Mike, got a few questions. Is it ok to clench the jaw slightly during the day at times when I don't have gum with me? Also, are there examples of people improving their face as an adult doing your method? I'm in my mid twenties and want to know if improving is still possible? How many hours should I chew gum each day?

    • @Grays_Plays
      @Grays_Plays 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It is possible to change the structure as an adult, it just takes time. The lady in this video at about the 51 minute mark shows significant change within a relatively very short time period, enough to validate the theory, the rest is up to you and your efforts. th-cam.com/video/-pzL3ETuiKc/w-d-xo.html
      As for how long to chew, start with an hour and see how you do. If it's too much cut back, if it's too easy add more time, but lean on the side of caution with how hard you go at it and make sure to work on your tongue posture with just as much focus, as the balance between the two things is important to avoid problems.
      And personally I'd advise against clenching the jaw deliberately as you don't want to damage the teeth and you could possibly run the risk of that by chewing hard without anything between the them to cushion the impact.

If they start feeling weird (not the muscles but the joints) or making sounds when opening/closing your jaw, then either stop or slow it down.
