Ebiking Reviews and Adventures...
Two people from eastern North Carolina who jumped into the world of e-bikes during the pandemic in search of adventure and a new journey, that's us. My wife decided to purchase the first e-bike in our household and soon convinced me to join the experience. Growing up avidly racing motorcycles in Pennsylvania, e-bikes have revived that same spirit of my younger years. Now, we are searching out new bike trails and adventures in the Southern states, some local some not and want to share them with you! we'll share things from our perspective that we hope will keep us all learning. I actually race other bikes in a greenway (Minnesota)
It’s these idiot kids doing their wheelies in the middle of the road. They mess things up for the rest of us.
Nice video, good explanation!
@@edulloalf thank you very much. I do appreciate it and thank you for watching.
Too much planning for me I like to wing it ❤
@@GarysE-BikeAdventures thank you for watching Gary. It’s quite all right to wing it if you’re in someplace that you’re somewhat familiar with or can revisit often. But when it’s someplace like, for example, when we e-biked Washington DC. We know we will probably never go back again and so the extra planning was well worth it. We try to do a trip like that every few months and that’s where this really comes in handy.
Hello to a fellow rider on the Danville, Va Riverwalk trail !
@@randybarrett6167 thanks for watching. It is a really nice trail. Hopefully, I can get up there and take a look at the MTB trails at that one end. I am actually from about two and a half hours away.

@@IMBruceECLECTIC thank you much, Bruce. We appreciate it.
Are you a full time rv'er? If so...I am jealous!
@@IMBruceECLECTIC nope. Don’t even have an RV. We’re full-time in our own business. The e-biking is for our relaxation and TH-cam channel was just to take some folks along. That’s why you very rarely see any reviews here. I decided a while ago that I’m really not looking for another job. so when somebody wants me to get a bike, I send them a letter that tells them, I’d be happy to review it, but it’s on my terms. That usually frees me from the idea that I have to sell something for them. Thanks much for watching.
@@southernebiking ....very nice. Yes....me too with the biking. The TH-cam was to Preach to get out and "LIVE LIFE" with an electric bike and it has turned into something I never dreamed of....but I do not want it to be like work.....
Too hard for this old man...
@@IMBruceECLECTIC it’s really pretty easy. Heck I was over 40 before I ever even used a computer. Spent the first month or two trying to figure out how to set reins onto the keyboard. Lol. Thanks for watching.
@@southernebiking ...maybe I need to devote time to learn.....many times I just "wing it." ha ha ha
It’s not the destination but the journey we desire 🖖🏼🚵🏻
@@georgesinclair1393 one hundred percent correct thanks for watching
If I carried a gun while I ebiked would that make it ok?
I can only comment based on some assumptions, but campuses banning E transportation while not banning automobiles is absolutely insane to me. I would assume that this is because scooters and E bikes are riding on the sidewalk and not bike paths or streets. Why not instead lower the speed limit to 20 miles an hour or even 15 miles an hour and force cars to drive at a speed that is less dangerous for E bike riders and E scooter riders? And then educate students on where they should be riding bikes and E scooters. This seems like the most common sense solution.
E bikes on public access land should have a minimum age limit of 16 years old, per the ADA act any legally disabled person can ride their OPD-MD other power driven mobility devices on ANY government or private land open to the public, I'm starting a coalition of disabled ebike riders please help spread the word to local public officers who write these laws with no exceptions for the disabled..😢😢😢😢😢
@dennisd7451 thank you for watching. I would be glad to spread this information. Please send me an email getting more detail of where people come find out more and I will let them know.
I bought a Moro pro large on Friday. I love it everything's high quality
@@ks-sy3st it is definitely a quality bike. Especially when compared to some of these direct-to-consumer bikes out there. Do you know if you’re getting a free battery with it? And thank you for watching.
@@ks-sy3st I would also guess the very first thing you notice is how solid it feels when going over rough ground
I bought my bike from factory Motorsports out of St George Utah. They're keeping all the second batteries. They're selling them with the battery that comes with a bike but no second battery. I think they're holding on to them because of the 5-year warranty that they're offered with the sale
Which is the most accurate… I think GPStrack seems to place you closer to the tracks you take… what’s you test say
@@GoPro-TV thanks for watching. It really depends on where you were at and how the satellites are situated. I have seen the Komoot do better and other rides. The Ride with GPS did better. That was a conclusion that that I come up with, where the satellites happen to be as you were using either app. I have settled on the Komoot app. I think they are actually extremely comparable. The thing that tips the weight in favor of the Komoot is the one time fee of $29 versus the yearly 59.99 for Ride with GPS. I use the world package on Komoot and the basic on Ride with GPS..
We don't ban cars for 2 months because of 1 crash, this is ridiculous. Also the people that choose to ride their surron on the street are already breaking the law, making them "extra" illegal won't change that fact, it just hurts people afraid to break the law (by breaking the law that means riding an e-bike)
@Cheezus you are correct unfortunately, they have all ready placed a new ordinance, and made this permanent. Now somebody will have to challenge it in court, and they know nobody's going to end up doing that
Why band anything? Just post speed limits. We have cars and motorcycles that go 100 plus mile per hour, way above the speed limit. We dont band them, we enforce speed limits.
@@priznuruvchrist4549 on the surface I would definitely agree with this. However, it does lead into some issues. Yes, cars can go over the speed limit, and we enforce the speed limit. How do we do that? Well, the car has to be registered and have a license plate. Driver has to be licensed. Typically this will now lead to insurance requirements. And in most states, you have to have an inspection done. Of course, all the taxes that go along with this for our lovely big brother. I’m not sure that would be the route we would want to take as I would prefer to leave my eBike the same as a regular bicycle. Thanks so much for watching.
@southernebiking I understand your point of view. However without making an effort to regulate ebike rider behavior with simple efforts such as sign postings limiting speeds in sensitive areas we are opening ourselves up for unwanted scrutiny by bigger government. It needs to start at a local level with common since. The bike trails where I live post speed signs and people around here are good for honoring them. However in places with zero structure setting expectations, one can only expect chaos. There is nothing wrong with establishing a good rider framework and that can be done without overzelous governing / nannyism. Ebike enthusiasts need to get involved with their local community council to help develop this framework. If they dont I fear others will and it might not end up well. Who knows....
@@priznuruvchrist4549 you are correct. And we do go to Council meetings, etc. In my area, the vast majority of bikes are being ridden by older couples and individuals and so there is not an issue as they are very respectful. Of course, speed limits are posted on all trails. But I do understand in areas that younger people are using e-bikes there could be some issues. You had mentioned getting involved with your local community and I agree 100% with that. I believe a huge start on that would be to educate the councilman of the different types of bikes out there. A very common misconception that I see is the public views bikes as nothing but the suron type. When they hear the word E bike, they are already against it. I believe this happens because as people are out walking on trails. When they get past one of those type of bikes, they know they just encountered an e-bike. when someone comes by and respectfully passes them after giving a warning and making sure that they have plenty of room. They nine times out of 10 do not even connect that to being an ebike.
I enjoyed your video. able to see a little bit of North Carolina beautiful thank you

Great video work!
@@IMBruceECLECTIC thank you for watching Bruce. I’m experimenting with my video stuff a little bit. Trying to find a balance of doing a video versus enjoying the ride.
@@southernebiking ...OMG....me too. I have been thinking about that more and more lately. So much easier to ride and not video and I have even been thinking about NO editing....
@ most of my videos get no editing we just pick a subject and chat about it. Very easy to finish out the video, just run it through da Vinci and it’s done. But I’m looking at maybe doing a bit more editing just to change things up and for the challenge of it. i’m probably going to cut down the amount of videos that I upload just so that I can work on them a little bit more. Making sure I keep this as a hobby. We don’t monetize or anything like that, just trying to get some info out there to people. again thanks for watching.

@@ursuladubrick4434 this is the Komoot app that I have been using as of late. We will be doing some other videos on it as well. Thanks for watching.
@ thank you! Am looking forward to the videos that will follow.
@@southernebikingthanks for clarifying what app. Do you have to build the route on the computer? Then how do you download it to your phone?
@@marcusrawls2125 thanks Marcus. I will be doing a video on just that. But you can build the route on the Komoot website and then it automatically transfers to your phone for navigation. You can also build a route on your phone, but it’s not going to be as detailed.
Do you use a different app to plan your routes?
@@ThomasBrenneman thanks for watching Thomas. For the most part, I use the Komoot app on the desktop. There are times when I will go to a different app to get a satellite view that is updated. That would be pretty rare and when we are planning road trips and of course Michelle wants to avoid rougher off-road, so I try to get the best satellite app to see if there is a paved trail. You can also import any GPX file from any other app that you can export from. We will be going over some of this in some other videos. Enjoy your upcoming weekend.
What navigation app are you using?
@@ThomasBrenneman this is the Komoot app. I have a long history with them. Let’s just say. Lol. Thanks much for watching.
@@southernebiking Just downloaded Komoot and used it on a 15 mile E-Bike Ride, it worked very well! Thank you for the info! Looking forward to seeing your video on how you plan out your rides!
@ they will probably give you a introductory offer of $19.99 for the world package. This will be well worth it. The voice navigation that you have will be in what is called a region, which is typically one or two counties. The world package is just what it says, you get all the voice in the navigation and routing throughout the world. It is typically $29.99 and even that is a great deal. I used to use the Ride with GPS, which is very comparable as an app. But they also want $60 per year for their basic package which would be similar to what this is. The Komoot app fee is one time only and you get to use it for life.
@@southernebiking I bought the world map package and Premium Service. Thank you for recommending the KoMoot app. I have used it during my last two rides, it works extemely well! Thank you for your advice and great videos. I really enjoy them!
This video made my day. I had a knee repalcement done 4 weeks ago, so I was riding my bike inside on a trianer right along with you. Made me feel like I was almost outside!
Amy, that is great that you enjoyed this video. You truly made my day and we will keep you in our prayers For continued healing. God bless and keep the wheels rolling
It takes years of riding all the time to learn how to handle 20mph+ speed.
Bottom line, there are many cars that can go much faster than the posted speed limit. It's the same with ebikes. Obey the law when on bike trail and there will be no problems. I pedal constanly when riding my Lectric Xpeak. I obey the law and I get a lot of exercize.
@@Slamb68 thank you for watching. Honestly, I used to think the same thing. And if everybody would be responsible, we would not have these issues. But if you look at cars as an example. They have to have a licensed driver, registration, and license plate, insurance, inspection, and of course all the associated taxes. Is that really what we want for our e-bikes? I am a bit concerned if they started speaking about speed limits only that is what we would be facing. again thanks for watching.

I think it is only the US market they are pulling out of at this point. I purchased the YDX Moro 07 two months ago and loving this bike. Range and performance suits my riding style perfectly. 👍🏼
@@JohnMoore-vh5ed I am in the same boat, loving the pro. I believe you are right they’re pulling out of only the US market. May have something to do with all these direct-to-consumer bikes being pushed. It places a manufacture in a very difficult position. Cater to the market or cater to the industry. @@southernebiking I'm in New Zealand, Yamaha NZ did put their Moro's on sale but not the 50% like US around 35% with no offer of 2nd free battery ☹ At this discount they were still an excellent value for your money purchase when you compared to other brands and the component specifications.
@ I agree John, it is a great value. I ended up getting mine just a bit more than 60% off. Supposedly I will be receiving a second battery. There has been some confusion on that as to if it was while supplies last or guaranteed. Even without the second battery, the deal was just too good to beat.
As of right now, and it does make sense, Yamaha is currently leaving the US market for they're complete bikes. Parts are still available, and they will continue to produce them. The market is just crashing to hard and not sustainable. When things decide to stabilize, I bet they'll be back offering complete bikes again.
When I'm on one of my bikes I'm one, when I'm on the other bike I'm the other. Specialization is for insects.
@@ebikeengineer thank you much for watching. I believe I will be doing several videos about the DTC’s.
I hope your trash take scare tactic was worth the hundred views.
@plan-b-cycling it's actually closer to 100,000 views. This town has made their ban permanent and changing the laws in florida because of it. I'm not interested in burying my head in the sand like some.
@4:40 - I keep wondering, Why is it the Ebike? I never hear this about you common 21 speed racer moving at 45 mph. Some of those guys will not slow down for anyone.
Thanks much for watching friend. I think this reputation comes because the majority of the public does not understand that there are actually electric bikes that operate like a bicycle for the most part. Yes, they think every ebike is like the surrons. Of course, they are incorrect about this, but they still completely outnumber. Us folks that are trying to ride like a bicycle. And when authorities want to hear the voice of the people that is the voice that they end up hearing. Not ours.
This looks like a great trail. Where is it located?
Just got this comment now, sorry I missed it. This is in the raliegh carry area. Several different trails linked together.
This is the same thing I do..Just slow down, ring the bell and pass. The only real problem I have with walkers are those who are not walking at all. 1. Little kids not being attended my parents and they run/walk/jump back and forth on the path. 2. Older people who that come to a complete stop and turn around for some reason. 3. Those strange people that stand in the middle of the trails. 4. Those strange people who lay flat on the Trail. and last.. 5. Those women who huddle up and stop oncoming riders so their friends can urinate. Bonus: Those wearing earbuds/headphone that can't hear you approaching.
I'm speechless what you are running into on the trails. Lol
Bike trails have speed limits. In Illinois to be an ebike it can’t have over 750 watts. Class 1,2,or 3. Over 750 watts it’s a moped and needs a license. Have producers create titles so they can have a plate. My Dads 63 chev 409 with 3 carbs had over 400 hp. Still had to drive 65 except in Montana. Cops don’t have the resources to monitor bikes. Why there are issues. They will want funding to regulate. Guesswhere that $ will come from.
@@garywillhoit thank you for watching Gary. I used to think the speed limit would be a good idea, but the enforcement would be basically impossible without license, plates, insurance, et… one of my major beefs is with these manufacturers making it so easy to restrict these bikes. I really have no problem with the bike, but let’s not sell it as an ebike and say that it is the same legally as a bicycle. This is really something that I have only noticed on the DTC bikes. You walk into a trek store and buy a trek bike, you’re not gonna unrestricted by just pushing a couple buttons on the display. I’m not gonna get into everything but I will be doing another video about this very soon. That expands on this a little bit. Again, thank you for watching and enjoy your weekend.
Great video. I'd love to have a neighborhood like that near by to ride in. But for now I'll stick to trails. Anyway. what worries me about riders not following the 'Rules of Ebike Classification" is America starts doing the that crazy stuff I saw over in Great Britain. There thieves are riding powerful Ebikes and using them to commit crimes. Mainly snatching Cellphones. So Great Britain outlaw the 750 watt and above Ebikes(Not stealing Cellphones). But you only see the Cops stopping and taking these bike from Law Abiding Citizens. They seems to think that by taking these bikes from the Average Joe on his way to work will stop the Criminals. It is the most Ass Backward thing I ever seen. Yet I can imagine Law Enforce in the U.S. doing the same thing as we get more and more Karens complaints. Thanks, once again..Great Video.
@@PlayingInVestapol thank you for watching friend. Absolutely I am right there with you. I see it’s going to be more of e-bikes are going to need to be registered, plated, insured, etc. Of course, along with that that will be the taxes. Because let’s face it law-enforcement would not know a 250 W from a 750 W. so it will be up to the lawmakers and if they make you plate your bike, you end up having to get inspections and that’s where they find these things out. that will also give them reason to stop anybody that is on a bike that is not plated. You can certainly see how easy that would be for a lawmaker. Again, thanks for watching and enjoy your weekend.
Hey there Mr and Mrs southern ebiker! I am not an ebiker at all but…. You guys really have my thoughts on the subject spot on (at least the important parts). For starters, manufacturers and the magazines cater to one thing. Money! (Yep you nailed that too). When e-bikes first popped up on the scene the bike magazines were “no-no-no, this is not bicycling or mountain biking”. But you could have predicted when people wanted pedaling assistance and would PAY for it all of a sudden the periodicals were all in. That being said sales will drive an industry and as we are seeing people will not automatically be sensible. Some people will need to be forced into it! (Laws 😢). So most that you said about ebikes on trails I can be on board with. Surron and the like have no business on any trail with pedestrians and children. It’s just common sense. Here is where we may separate thoughts on the topic…. I am 61 yrs old, live in NC and I’m an avid cyclist and mountain biker. I thought I was all “anti-ebike” and watching your vids and witnessing what an ebike has done for my 58 yr old wife has softened me to the idea. I can’t seem to get past this though; e-bikes on singletrack. I saw your singletrack mountain ebike purchase and I really don’t get the idea of a competition on an ebike. Another component of my feeling of e-bikes on singletrack is a little more refined. A mountain biker (no ebike) goes up to the mountains (or even a local trail to ride). There is a finite amount of time and effort that most people can ride and then it is time to rest, and give others a chance to enjoy the trails. But the ebike allows for over-extended miles and time and adds to trail over-use, crowding, and severe trail degradation. Got swapping batteries adds to the problem. As a 61 yr old cyclist I have seen in myself and my piers that an ebike isn’t necessary to enjoy the ride. (I’m sticking to singletrack here). With the work comes the benefits. Thanks for great videos!! I’m a fan!
@@pathart2080 thank you for watching Pat. We much appreciate it. I run across regular mountain bikers quite often that will certainly ride further than I do on my bike. I think it boils down to what we are capable of and after six decades, five of which were spent climbing on, let’s just say not real tame horses, the idea of a regular bike would really not be possible for me. As far as the competition. This is a series that I was very involved with when it first was developed over 40 years ago. It is called the grand national cross country, or, GNCC. I found out about five years ago that not only is the series still going, but it has expanded into a worldwide known competition. It is not just for off-road motorcycles now, but they also have some cross-country e-bike races. I guess you could say it is a bucket list for me to show up on the starting line of one of these races after more than 40 years away. Maybe we will run across each other out on the trails one day. Enjoy your weekend.
Great video. We ride both. I do regular bike to get ultra exercise. I would say we bike with assistance. We try to do adventure trips and get as much range pedaling as we can. We have gotten 60 miles before. We live in a really hilly area. It makes it tough on regular bikes to do a long road trip as we are older. Keep up the good work.
@@ericcopass7483 thank you very much Eric we appreciate it and thank you for watching. I know with my knees and back. I would not be able to ride a regular bike and would give it up pretty quickly. Surprisingly enough, when I’m riding my custom built track I rarely am using any power. only when heading up a hill or picking up speed. Maintain rolling very rare. Does the watt meter even kick on.
E bike manufacturers keep pushing the speed limits up to the point where the authorities are gonna have to set up and enforce tougher laws and rules.
@@pedrofernandez8729 the way, the manufacturers are making it so easy to un restrict, the authorities that will step in will be lawmakers not law enforcement. That’s when the real problems will really get rolling.
I seldom use the throttle, so I guess I am a biker. Most of the e bike riders I see around here, don't seem to pedal at all.
@@pedrofernandez8729 thank you for watching Pedro. I think a boils down to are we riding them like bicycles or are we riding them like little motorcycles. I know I will catch a lot of flack for that, but I’ve never really been concerned about stepping on toes. Enjoy your weekend.
Sweet ride! I've been eye'ing these for years!
@@BlueMonkeyBicycles you may be a bit too late. From what I understand they are out of their mountain bikes now. But I have to tell you, it is a sweet ride and I walked out the door at about $2100 with it. no way I could walk away from that. Thanks much for watching.
All roads should have a bike lane in and around city limits, bike riders are required to follow traffic rules as if they are any other vehicle so to keep everyone safe, my city does not allow bikes to be ridden on sidewalks and vehicles are required to pass bikes with a three foot clearance to the cyclist from the vehicle, but not all roads allow this much lane, so bike rider must keep up with traffic speeds if on a trike bike or ride in the curb drainage if on two wheels! Once upon a time there were no curb cuts for wheelchairs, now there are. It is up to us to merge new ideas with the future of biking. Excellent work Southern E-biking!
@@josephwoehlerii2855 thank you Joseph and thank you for watching. I agree with you. Unfortunately, this town has made this band a permanent ordinance. At this point, somebody’s going to have to fight it in court to get rid of it, and of course, nobody wants to go through that hassle. this is what a lot of unconstitutional ordinances are based on that they will do it until they get it thrown out because nobody wants to do the fighting.
this is what we do when we are riding. nice trail your on.. What app do you use for trails, that it tells you which way to go
@@dogmom9928 thank you very much for watching dog mom. And thank you for communicating with other users of the trail. This is the Komoot app. I am using here. It is fabulous and I will be doing several videos on it at some point. Ride with GPS is another good one, but it has an annual subscription. we use the Komoot on just the basic package which is $30 one time fee and it last a lifetime.
No. Because bikes are personal transportation and they can't take away a right to ride a ebike. The accident happens because of rider fault not bike.😂
@@MVz-l3b I understand what you’re saying and thank you for watching. They did in fact ban all electric bikes from this town. It is an ordinance now. now it will mean someone will have to fight that in court. They are relying on the fact that most people will not be interested in going to that length.
