Ebiking Reviews and Adventures...
Two people from eastern North Carolina who jumped into the world of e-bikes during the pandemic in search of adventure and a new journey, that's us. My wife decided to purchase the first e-bike in our household and soon convinced me to join the experience. Growing up avidly racing motorcycles in Pennsylvania, e-bikes have revived that same spirit of my younger years. Now, we are searching out new bike trails and adventures in the Southern states, some local some not and want to share them with you! we'll share things from our perspective that we hope will keep us all learning. @@Randywilliams-xy4sj thank you for watching. That is exactly what they did. They are no longer allowed on any town property. Any E bike at all.
Best explanation. Thank you.
I generally don’t ride so much on trails. I do go on the sidewalk for a bit most rides, just along some pretty scary 45 mph roads I wouldn’t feel safe riding out on (people are often going 60+, the absolute fastest I can go on one of my EUCs is 41 or 42, I generally cruise more like 30). Riding on the sidewalk is legal here, I’m generally not going any faster than 15 mph if nobody is around, slower if they are. I do occasionally go on a trail for one of my errand kind of rides, and while none of the ones I go on tend to be that busy, I live on the periphery of a college campus, so 75%+ of pedestrians I encounter are wearing earbuds. Lots of frustrating passes for sure around people walking in the middle of the sidewalk who won’t respond to any bell or calling out to them. There are different apps for your phone where you can actually have it play a tone similar to an electric car backing up that gets louder and changes tone as you speed up. That kind of thing can be nice if you’re going to regularly be on a busy path. If people are hearing enabled, they’ll hear you approach.
They will destroy an industry like the mopeds of the 70s

Was it the accident or the batteries exploding?
Im sure will relax those bans...dor a price of course. Registration, insurance, road tax, trail tax gyou get the point of the ban.
@highseasdrifter7885 of course follow the money. That is always a factor. But I believe the biggest drive in this was the "who" died in an accident. BTW, they have now made the ban permanent. Thanks for watching.
Informative. Thanks for the info on the bike group.
@@ronalddonaghe3674 thank you and thank you for watching
I regularly ride this section of the C&O from Shepherdstown to and from Harpers Ferry or Brunswick. Absolutely a beautiful area to have a peaceful ride. The trail is alot smoother now since a few years ago the new stones have been put down onto the trail. Before then, it was in my opinion more rough than the Greenbrier Rail Trail. Since the C&O is now a part of the Great American Rail trail, there had been a push to have the smoother stones for easier access for everyone. The time 14.30, yes there was a flash flood in 2018 that caused this wash out. I'm doubtful that this will be fixed anytime soon, nor am worried about it since it is a nice detour. Further East of Harpers Ferry, the bridge over the Little Catoctin had just been installed this past summer since the flood in 2018 washed out the old wooden bridge there. It takes some time to complete projects on this trail since the funds are not as easy to come by., even though there are over 1 million visitors to this park each year. This trail is a great historical ride, hope you get to ride more of it some day.
@@travispowers1704 thanks for watching Travis. We would love to get back up there and ride further north as well. The Greenbrier rail trail is another beautiful one that we enjoyed. Much more rural was the biggest difference. Again thanks for watching and the info on the detour area.
Might need to do a video on California and the new ebike happenings
@@JohnBabcock-qy1cs I do intend to do a video on this. Not sure when it will happen as I am kinda laid up with some health issues right now. Hopefully within the next month, but it may be old news by then. Thanks for watching.
@southernebiking I am sorry to hear of your health condition.. I don't think i can go watch previous videos like that. Wish you God's speed in recovery and a great 2025. Be safe!
Great video! I road peddle bikes out west in the 1980's & 1990's. I have been watching massive amounts of TH-cam Videos as I am try to decide which type I need. I appreciate the information on many of those sites but one thing that concerns me is exactly the LACK of road safety and manners you correctly display in your videos. I live in a country farming community and will use my E-bike for manly hunting & trail riding with Grandkids. There are hardly anyone in our riding area. However, what I see on manybof these videos is " an accident waiting to happen". Some of the videos I have seen with people demostrating these bikes on public walking & bike areas are scary. I can definantly see regulations on the horizin for E-Bike as the public " non- bikers" have a Right to these shared recrational areas too. We Bikers have got to do better. As I watched your videos , It brought back many fond memories of riding my Triathlon Bike in Southern Cali. We tried our best to be safe an respectful of others that we shared those beuatiful Bike & Hike areas with. When it was " hammer time" we took took it out in the road, not the Board Walk or Hike & Bike Paths. Many seniors enjoy getting out for nice walk and enjoying the fresh air too. We always slowed down and gave a verbal " on your left or right". Please, People review this video and how this Gentleman demonstrated a great way to share the road with all. I haven't bought my E-Bike yet but as I have reviewed them , the weight & speeds are not like my old Specialized Allez . Since I am a " Large Body, most of the bikes are over 100 pounds and that doesn't include my 215 pounds & gear. That is alot of mass & speed against any human body but I worry about Senior most. Semper Fi
@@rik4369 thank you Rick. And thank you for watching. We just try to treat everybody with respect. If everybody could do that, we would be in a pretty good place. Enjoy the ride.
People in my area are giving E-bikes a pass concerning many rules. For example, my railtrail which has been pedal bikes and hikers for decades is not enforcing any rules relating to powered bikes on the trail in consideration for older people who want to continue to cycle. Thing is E-bikers don't seem to have a clue that they are being judged during this period and in my opinion well on their way to ruining it for others. In the end, all of us will lose access to this trail. I had a home built E-bike that I sold simply because I could tell folks didn't like it much on the trail. Many trails in my area have been granted access to the trails by homeowners who can and will close sections of the trail. We used to worry about dirtbikes but pretty much solved that by posting signs but E-bikers seem to just get a pass on everything. I think E-bikes have gotten past the judgment stage and failed. In short, they never understood they were on trial where the public is concerned.
If you want to ride a mid drive system and not have the threat or the fear of breaking a chain go to an internal gear hub. It's a more expensive set up overall, but they really work out well. Some even have 14 gears internally and you can shift at a standstill. They have a lot of 500 to one ratio change maximum.
If I wish to swim with sharks than I should be allowed to swim with sharks. Same with my bike. I know its more dangerous than a car but I choose that risk as it has its pros such as cost.
Any motorized thing that goes on the roads should be required to have insurance...they are the same as scooters/motorcycles...don't ban them...just treat like scooters...but keep them off bicycle/walking trails...
Great explanation i'm doing this to a gravel bike I have and I was worried about the chain issues but its seems like its not to big of an issue I already shift like this myself and ill just have some master links and an extra chain on me just in case.

Hi, what map do you use to move around the sugar Creek trail?
Thanks much for watching. We are using the Komoot app. We have done several videos on how to set up routes with it, and we will be doing a few more in the future. I can highly recommend it with getting the world package. Again thanks for watching.
most of the problams with ebikes are coming from kids if any new regulation comes it should just be that you need to be 18 years or older to ride them. kids are too stupid and disrespectful to have the privilege of riding them. in my opinion.
Grew up on 26" but see so much 29" and I'm a free man free thinker so checking everything out and finding that counterintuitively fat tire is better especially for me in my fiftized that's kinda hilarious now tell me about 29
@JohnSmith-tz4on the difference is more in the width of the tire, then in the diameter. I prefer my 29r more, because it's a 2.4 tire, instead of a 4 inch tire. My true eMTB is a 27.5x2.6. But I am also looking for the bike to be very nimble, and I prefer a lighter bike, whether it's an ebike or not. Thanks much for watching.

God bless you my friend. Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing your testimony. Sometimes these things are not easy especially in this type of a forum. So I tip my hat to you, and thank the Lord you are still with us. Blaine, I got a urinary infection in 2019 while visiting our son. I started pissing blood the day before we left to come back home. When we got back home, I drank a small glass of colloidal silver before going to bed. Then next day the blood was gone. My doctor has been after me to get a colonoscopy for some time because she thought I was losing blood and was anemic. I finally agreed and in October 2024 I had one done. They found a cancerous blockage. We talked to a surgeon, but he recommended that we not do surgery; the cancer had already spread into my liver (stage 4). We went to an oncologist, and they wanted to start Kemo right away; I agreed, but at the last minute I changed my mind. They gave me from two months to 2 years. Anyway, I decided to take more of the colloidal silver and to drink celery juice and smoothies as home remedies. It has been two months. I think my bowel movements have improved, and I don't feel sick. So, I am hoping that this will work for me. There are people praying for me also. Prayer is a mighty thing, and miracles do happen. Kemo, generally does nothing but give a little time; but it also makes people sick, and the ending is the same, death. So, in my opinion I have nothing to lose by taking the colloidal silver. I have a machine to make my own for pennies of what it costs to buy colloidal silver at a health food store. My wife and I are both 77 this month; if cancer takes me soon, I will have lived to the average age for a white male person. God bless us all Blaine.

Yeah, they won't force you to do something like wear a helmet but they will happily tell you you can't do something like ride an ebike.
What is the speed of most E-bikes.
@@nighthiker8872 thank you for watching. That can actually be a tricky question. A class 1E bike will only assist when you are peddling it and it stops assisting at 20 mph. A class 2E bike can have something like a throttle on it and will stop assisting at 20 mph. A class 3E bike is pedal assist only and it will go up to 28 mph. Class 3 was originally intended to be something like a road bike. That would be the bike that falls under the legal definition of an electric bicycle in the vast majority of states. Unfortunately, the industry is building a ton of other E bikes that do not fall under these classifications, but they are selling them as E bikes. They are giving them out to TH-camrs, who then show the public how to unlock them and ride them on bike trails, sidewalks, etc. I would say 50% of the E bikes out there today are no more legal on a bike trail than a KTM 450. In other words, they’re not E bikes where the law is concerned. This is where the problem is at.
@@nighthiker8872 by the way, I have no problem if they want to require registration on E bikes that are basically like a little motorcycles. But the ones that are operated like a bicycle, they should leave alone. Again, thank you for watching.
