It's really awesome to see Animal put together the candid 'behind-the-scenes' stuff on all of your athletes. As an aspiring 'fan,' it feels good to see the hard work put in (not that we already didn't know). It's deflating just watching guys hoist 7-8-900lbs and much more interesting to see the actual blood, sweat and tears shown in these docu's. Kudos guys, keep up the great work.
I feel like there's always a stigma when looking at guys you admire in the powerlifting community that they're just strong and that's the way it is. It's really awesome to see a video of Dan putting in really hard work and proving that he has to work for what he has accomplished. Makes me want to keep putting in the long days of agony and punishing myself.
Really helpful, hands down the best video on a proper bench tehnique/form on youtube. Started incorpreting this on my paused reps, feeling a big difference in terms of how the weight moves and feels on my arms. THANKS!!
I like that he lets the bar sink in to his rib cage, pauses and then initiates leg drive. That's how I have always trained, and some gurus tried to get me to pause without allowing the bar to sink low. In fact, I have read that training this way is not optimal. When you press raw and even in a shirt, I believe you engage the chest more and get a nice rebound effect if you time the pre stretch from the sinking effect of a heavy load (heavy enough to allow it with some of the modern shirts) with the leg drive. It is not the best for your shoulders in one respect (it allows for a little shoulder rotation and puts wear and tear on the rotator cuffs) but stopping the bar and resisting the downward sink of the bar into your rib cage makes my shoulders feel brittle, like they are going to dislocate and the movement becomes more like a shirted press, with a really tough shirt that require over 400 just to touch the chest. The difference is, when training raw, you don't have the protection that the shirt provides in this position. In a shirt, benching that way engages the lats and the triceps and the chest and front deltoids sort of go along for the ride. With a raw press, you need to engage everything to its maximum and the chest and front deltoids become way more important. That is why I allow the bar to sink into my rib cage. I get a better pre stretch and better rebound out of the hole despite the fact that I use a pause with my work sets. Just make sure your spotter is one of your normal training partners or a powerlifter himself. Otherwise he may think you are getting stapled and grab the bar in an attempt to save you :)))
Honestly, your rest time should be however long you think you need until your next set. If you think you can do a set after 30 seconds, then do it. If it takes 7 minutes, then do that. Its all about in the moment.
I imagine the sinking technique would work better for slightly larger people. Or I guess anyone but I have played around with it and it just seems a little harder to get use to. I think because when I sink it I seem to loosen up too much at the bottom I don't know.
***** Do you guys really train chest 2-3 times a week? Lately I lift once a week, 455 paused and almost got 500 touch and go on Saturday all RAW....always(yes vids are on my page of some lifts). I tried doing chest twice a week and I felt weaker. Got my first comp in the 242lb class at the UPA event in Iowa in April of 2015 doing the tested division. Hey, if it works for you great, just didn't help me.....it actually hurt my lifts.
Yeah. Powerlifting style. Its puts you at a mechanical advantage by arching your back. You just need to keep your "five point stance." Head, shoulders, hips and both feet touch the bench/ground.
tommy vercetti I think hes ranked like 16th in his weight class on bench in the nation. I buddy of mine Matt Phelps is ranked 2nd in that class. Look him up.
Can you please tell me if you are still associated with Derek Kendall and what happened to him? There are multiple videos of Kendall under Animal but they are 2 or 3 years old. After that it seems like he just fell off the face of the earth.
He said in a different interview he has been training for a while just basic bodybuilding. Which laid the foundation. But like the other guys said 07 started training for power. I myself cannot wait for his program to hit the market, I think you can pay for it now 350 for a 10 week commitment.
bar touched his chest, and finished with his arms straight. How much larger of a ROM can he get? Bringing the bar closer to his clavicle would increase his ROM but also vastly increase his chance for a shoulder injury. He could bring his arms closer together but that won't carry over to his geared lift at meets, so why do something that won't carry over? But hey look at your chest, small and weak and that's what larger ROMs do for you?
hmm closer but how much closer do you mean because too close would cause elbow flaring and put an increasing amount of tension on the front delts and away from the chest
And as a powerlifter he wants to hit the sweet spot of using all the muscles in his body yet keep the rom short enough so he isn't wasting any effort. Which you find fault with for some reason. He could actually decrease his rom even further by spreading his hands out a few fingers more. Since in competition the widest you're allowed to grip is when your index fingers on the rings. He has his ring finger on the rings. Being an accomplished powerlifter has given him a large body. Which also limits his rom as he's too large to take the bar down any further. For what he's going for his rom is perfect. Your comment has no baring other than you trying to deal with your own insecurities with your poor form and lack of weight. Powerlifters tuck their elbows as they bench. That gives them the strongest and safest foundation to bench. If he were a bodybuilder he might bring in his hands and lower the bar closer to his clavicle. But he'd also be doing shorter reps to keep constant tension on the muscle. And still deal with the increase chance for tearing a pectoral, deltoid or rotator cuff.
yeh thanks for the story mate, but i think you misunderstood what i wrote in the first place and i agree with all what you said. cool never knew about the index finger rule. But main thing i want you to know is i never proposed his short ROM as a fault, of course it is because he is huge the bar cannot go further. And my lack of weight and increase ROM (compared to his at least) is because i am a novice. Nonetheless i lift approx 70-80% of 1RM 5x a fortnight fullbody routine aka Jason blaha 5x5.
There is a reason he is a top level lifter. If you don't understand why he is doing what he is doing, you don't understand the sport and necessary trianing. You could train to be a runner by running, but you could run faster by also adding other similar movement pattern training.
Love these hard core (no BS) gyms. Show up, focus and train hard.
Dan is a Powerhouse of strength and a super guy.
Damn I love the sound of the iron plates!
I know there's nothing like it

Bravo guys!
pretty impressive to keep that kind of endurance for that many sets with the same amount of heavy weight . what ever he's taking is for sure working
Does 455 for 6 sets, then ups the weight to 460 on set 7! Beast!
I liked that they didn't put any stupid "motivational" music over it, just show the raw lifting as it is
Dan Green is such a nice, humble soft-spoken guy for being so damn strong
I feel like there's always a stigma when looking at guys you admire in the powerlifting community that they're just strong and that's the way it is. Animal doesn't hurt, though!

Hardly ever comment on anything, but these Dan videos are AWESOME. Keep them coming!!!
Incredible speed bench repping.

Your physique and speed on bench is incredible.
Dan is unreal! Loving these vids!
Dude lifted like a BOSS! great videos keep them coming!!!
i absolutely fucking love these videos! just pure, raw, beast.
he make it look so easy !!.. this stuff is just what I need.. thx for the post !!
Thank you for the video, thumbs up.
Does anyone know what his rest time is between working sets?
Enough time so he can perform the next set. Each to his own.
He most likely takes 4-7 min with the amount of weight and rep scheme
Honestly, your rest time should be however long you think you need until your next set. If you think you can do a set after 30 seconds, then do it. If it takes 7 minutes, then do that. Its all about in the moment.
Love the Godsmack in the background!
I hear Metallica in the background! good shit
Yep
Explosive speed reps are incredible 💪🏿💪🦍🦬🤎🔥💣🏋️🏋🏿♂️🤸🤸🏿♂️💥👑
Very motivating for benching
Isn't the bar supposed to be at eye level? I thought that was the correct form of lifting the bar above to avoid the most shoulder use.
Excellent speed on reps.
Now I consider him a true lifter. Much respect :)
To train with that kind of weight set after set for reps is remarkable.
Wow now that's SOLID volume!
Wonder if he gets a sore sternum bouncing off it like that. I use to do that and my sternum would hurt for 2 days after bench.
Does anyone knows what music is playing in 4:34
I miss the sound of steel weights clinging and clanging too.
love these. keep em coming bros.
deads and squat series after this please!
i also want a animal flexfit cap lol, but its not available in sweden...
I imagine the sinking technique would work better for slightly larger people. Or I guess anyone but I have played around with it and it just seems a little harder to get use to. I think because when I sink it I seem to loosen up too much at the bottom I don't know.
About 9 months ago I was so weak. My bench was at 205 now it's stuck at 255 for about 4 weeks now. I can't wait till I can bench 315.
thanks man!!! U just motivated me a lot by sayin that. lol!

Im not dogging you or anyone. Please don't take it that way. Its just my experience. Try both ways and see what works for you.
***** I agree with you. My comp PR is 441. Best gym touch and go is 500. I only train bench once a week.
PunchNuggetFilms SMOLOV JR! And eat lot's, brought my bench from 275 up to the 315 mark, nothing like hitting 3 plates. :)
Was this filmed at Universal Athletics? You won't meet many people as nice as Bobby and Kathy Fields!!
I miss the sound of steel plates clinging sound.
May I suggest that you adjust the audio levels on the video. The audio on the interview parts are much lower than the rest of the vid.
How long of rest does he take between each set?
whats the song he's listening to at the beginning?
Where in Allentown is this. What's it called?
Dope! Didn't know Dan is from Nor. Cal.
what did dan total back in 2007?? I wana see his progression
Whats the song playing at 2:30 ?
Godsmack - No Rest for the Wicked
GET IT!!!!!! 2 thumbs and 2 big toes up! Awesome
Very cool video!
I miss the sound of steel plates too.
Benchpress master

How old is Dan? He is a freak!!
There's a place in California called Mountain Dew?
+Mighty Ravendark Moutain View lol

Can you please tell me if you are still associated with Derek Kendall and what happened to him? There are multiple videos of Kendall under Animal but they are 2 or 3 years old. After that it seems like he just fell off the face of the earth.
That comment was directed at Animal.
4:38 is that Metallica All Nightmare long that I hear? Dan you're fucking awesome!!!
i live in Mountain View TOO!
im not much of a powerlifter. why chalk the bench?
Jeremy Hamilton is going to dominate this guy 2day!
BEASTMODE.
BEAST
How long has this guy been training?
He might have said he has been powerlift training since '07? I would look into it though.
ok I wanted a frame of reference because I'm trying to be more serious about training.
trained quite a while as an oly lifter before he "started powerlifting in '07"
He said in a different interview he has been training for a while just basic bodybuilding. Which laid the foundation. But like the other guys said 07 started training for power. I myself cannot wait for his program to hit the market, I think you can pay for it now 350 for a 10 week commitment.
That is awesome !!!! Holy shit !!!!
Why land the bar on his chest almost on his belly
It lets him push with more power. Engages his back and rear delta along with leg drive more
why did he put chalk on the bench?
So the sweat on his upper back doesn't cause him to slide out of position.
Paul Herlichka word thanks
AHP!! AAHHP!! AAAHHHP!!! AAAAHHHHP!!!!
i want a forza bench....
Good music
When Dan does a video, I grab a pad and pencil. The man has it figured out.
Beast
hell yeah!

why bounce it of himself and why he doesent lay there normal
