- We’re used to seeing live touring acts stop into CME-but, it’s not often that we get our own private concert! No matter what descriptors one might use to describe Baroness’s music, the way they use classic guitar models equipped with single-coil pickups to paint lush sonic landscapes is a reminder to musical artists of any genre that, often, the best surface upon which to paint-whether recording or in live performances-is a colorless canvas. Check out what we mean, here, in the Baroness CME Session!

More About Baroness:
Baroness formed in mid-2003, founded by former members of the punk/metal band Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. Singer John Dyer Baizley creates the artwork for all Baroness albums, and has done artwork for other bands. Much of their early material was written by John Dyer Baizley and Pete Adams at a music store in Savannah and then later in a small apartment. They recorded 14 hours of two guitars, and Baizley later repurposed this material for Baroness's earliest EP. From 2004 to 2007, Baroness recorded and released three EPs, named First, Second and A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk (aka Third), with the third one being a split album with Unpersons. Baroness started recording their first full-length album in March 2007. Phillip Cope from Kylesa continued to produce Baroness on this album. The Red Album was released on September 4, 2007, and met positive reception. Heavy metal magazine Revolver named it Album of the Year. On December 1, 2007, Baroness performed at New York City's Bowery Ballroom. On September 20, 2008, the band announced via MySpace Brian Blickle would be parting ways with the band, while also introducing a new guitarist named Peter Adams, also of Virginia-based band Valkyrie. Throughout 2007-9, Baroness toured and shared the stage with many bands including Converge, The Red Chord, High on Fire, Opeth, Coheed and Cambria, Coliseum, Mastodon, Minsk and Clutch.

How Baroness isn't a household name baffles me, most underrated band out there.
I recently purchased their Red Album on vinyl... Holy shit was my mind blown.
Because the album mixes are pretty out there....
On the wrong system it sounds like trash.
On the right system it's heaven.
One of the rare bands I collect every thing for.
@@Jept the Jon Congleton records were already something in that regard (I love his work but a lot of it is ear-fatiguing), but their last record with David Fridmann is a huge case of "this would be an incredibly unique and interesting mix if this wasn't mastered like crap". No good record should hurt the ears at low volumes.
Cause people have shorter and shorter attention spans and bands with real musical content dont make it as they used to. Most people cant hear a full song of this type without feeling bored. Its the sad truth. Thats why todays mainstream music is the trash we all know.. sad
One of the most interesting bands out there. Gina was a great addition.
Gina adds incredible depth and range to their sound. What a killer band all around.
I'm in love. 🤣🤣
Gina is an absolute beast! Saw them play an acoustic set a few months back and she was belting out acoustic solos with ease.
Tourniquet really shines live. The whole band is at the top of their game.
My favorite band at the moment. "Tourniquet" is so visceral in this version... FUCKING AMAZING!
Yess, thats the word, they really push energy into their playing.
Wicked good!!! They are using borrowed CME guitars. Because I don't have a life, I looked the guitars up on their website. Gina's tele is a $22,000 1954 W/Fender custom shop 53 in the neck and a Lindy Fralin vintage in the neck. John's is a modest $10,000 Tele. Still in stock if you're interested. ; )
My 100 dollah squier does the same
@@mennofennema3055 100 dollars? Man thats expensive I bet my $20 strat which I stole from my neighbor does way better than yours and these guys.
I hope that this lineup lasts. Gina has become such an essential part of the band.
Fuck yeah! Gina is massive!
Imagine if Pete came back also! The trinity.
@@deywill1234 That sound would be thick as fuck. The three of them have monster sound. Gina was such a great drop in, and fuck if her voice isn't perfect for it all. So, so good.
She’s so good.
Gina rocks but i do miss Pete.
Could listen to Seb and Nick just groove all day.
100%²
fukn groovy. Blend so well on them songs
Gina's vocals are legit ! She's awesome
Se does low vocals the one Doing the hard work is all John
@@audioblastlab8274 nope, she does both higher and lower, +she's doing the hard work on guitar most of the time
@@BlackofAzur guitar yes, not vocals.
@@audioblastlab8274 Hard work? Bruh they're both singing. It's a compliment, not a competition
They're all working together and sound amazingly, fuckin beautiful 🖤
Gina Gleason is a certified BADASS
Tourniquet is such a great song. Big ups for groovy drums and bass!!
Guess I’m buying a Tele now. Wife’s gonna be pissed. Thanks a lot Baroness.
Cold Blooded Angels : That bit with John and Gina on acoustic brings me to tears. What a fantastic pairing these two voices together !
I guess I've been living under a rock the last decade since I've never heard of this band. What a phenomenal sound. Gonna check out their discography asap
SAME Where the fuck have I been?!?!
Make sure to check the blue and red albums.
Yellow & Green is a great double album. -Dustin
@@MusicTheLifeBlood yes its awesome too 🙂 i think its little different though imo. Its not a bad thing though. Blue is the one that got me hooked instantly when i heard it the first time long time ago 🙂
Red and Yellow albums are my favorite. Blue is also excellent. Shit, they're all good.
Jesus fucking Christ that cold blooded angels rendition has rendered me speechless
This has to be the only band that I click on a TH-cam video of them and am completely captivated for the entire video time and time again!
I have to say, with all they (John) has been through - this is the band he was always looking for. All props to the past folks, this version of the band is going places - while keeping artistic integrity.
As someone who fell out of love with metal/heavier music a while back, it's bands like Baroness (and others like Mastodon, Cave In) who are restoring my love by just writing great songs that happen to be heavy! Such a great session!
Weak
Pure metal has grown dull and boring and its normal to grow out of it. Without a healthy blend of light and heavy, the heavy loses all meaning and impact
I had the same experience. Have you checked ''Gone is Gone'' as well? They blew me away. The bassist of Mastodon plays in it as well + Troy van Leeuwen from QOTSA etc.
@@Tim8tei I was literally listening to them yesterday, they're great!
@@lindsethnittisju797 like you
I wish their studio recordings sounded this good!
How good? This 30:12 good?
@@audioblastlab8274a few missed notes doesn’t really spoil this performance
I like their trajectory these days. Their music has grown so mature. Which is great
Side note: still loving the dual guitar harmonic interludes. Hearkens back to thin Lizzy.
Very Thin Lizzy
The audio quality of this recording and true presence of your live performance is incredible. Great to see acoustics in the mix. Truly well done.
Adding Gina Gleason has brought this band to a whole new level. She is incredible.
Baroness always knee me right in the feels.
Along with YOB, my two go-to bands over the last few tough years 🙏
The best! 🤘🤘
YOB?
Such a fantastic band. I've loved watching them grow. And true artists. Gina fits Baroness like a glove.
Agreed. Her addition to the band seemed to light an even bigger fire within John, allowing the songs to go places they couldn't go before. 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Such an amazing performance! I love Gina and John together. Their vocal harmonies are incredible!
Blast beat on seasons is insane love it
That blast beat on "seasons" kills me everytime, one of my favorite bands
Baroness is a real band. In my head I always tell myself- baroness is like your friends band- if your friends band was actually good.
Baroness kick ass. I just wish they played more of Red and Blue.
Dude, have you seen them recently? They busted out a ton of blue and red.
I want Blue, Yellow and Green in full 🥰
@@danec1384 do you even know how completely unrealistic that is, that would be a 2 and a half out concert... theres no shot they could do that without getting tired
@@ashleymusicx I saw Dream Theater play for 3 hours... I don't think Baroness would want to do it but I can dream 😀
@@danec1384 yeah you can dream but dont exoect them do to it
I found it so funny when they showed video of you guys taking down guitars & just as your about to see how it feels you look at the dreaded price tag 🏷 lol 😂 you know you haven’t quite made it big yet when your still looking at the price tags & i’m still there & most likely will be there until the day i die lol. Anyways love you guys “ Baroness “ 🤘 Cheers From 🇨🇦
Rediscovered Baroness through this video. Went and saw them a couple of days ago. Absolutely fantastic live band!
I can't lie. I really did not want to accept Gina. I had always loved Pete's place in the band and his sound. Seeing him go kind of hurt so naturally I wanted to reject his replacement. She has proven to be more than just a replacement though and has carved her own space in the bands sound. Much love, Gina. And Pete!
John name dropping the The Fucking Champs, shouldn't be surprised he was a fan of those guys. Great performance, thanks CME!
Baroness is just amazing. Absolutely incredible. Especially live. This one is so great. I first found them on Kerrangs THE PIT live and it’s by miles one of my favorite live recordings of all time. John’s vocals are insanely good.
That recording of The Pit is epic.
Agreed. That’s how I found them too. Killer set. They always seem like they’re on the edge of imploding from the complexity of the playing but they just keep nailing it. Totally
Pushing their own limits.
The kpit shows are awesome, the mastodon one is amazing and so was the baroness one. The Gatecreeper one is awesome too if you’re a death metal fan.
@@puppetmaster8551 Checked out the Gatecreeper set. I’m not a death metal aficionado but there is some wicked riffage in there and they sound massive. Great performance and sound.
@@gnerd99 no doubt man, I’ll always support them because they’re from my home state and they kickass live. They heavily have the classic Swedish death metal sound from the 90s which is awesome. The riffs on “from the ashes” are so great. Anyway their music definitely isn’t for everyone that forsure but I think almost everybody can appreciate how great they sound live, hell of a show to see.
Really loving this band! They cleverly make use of two guitarists to add texture and more depth to every song.
just saw Baroness this week on the Sweet Oblivion tour... wow, what an inspiring band. Every note, every riff is played with such intent, cohesion and emotion. Incredible.
Saw them in Columbus with Spotlights, great show!
JFC I'm watching this again and mind is blown. Sonically unreal.
Absolutely love Baroness, and such a killer set as well. That rendition of Cold Blooded Angels was incredible!! And props to the sound guys and engineers on this; the mix is excellent.
++
I just have to say check 30:12
@@audioblastlab8274 oh yea John didn’t seem happy with that one
I so love this song!🤘
Cheers from 🇨🇦
Thanks for watching! 🤘🤘
these guys make me feel better about playing heavy music with single coils.
Don't forget. Jimmy Page did the whole 1st Led Zep record on the Dragon Tele. 🙌
@@battlewagenStill. I keep my strat for blues/hard rock. Nothing like a hot/or vintage PAF humbucker. These guys sound good but it's a "sludgier" weezery sound that the single coils do good.
If I Have To Wake Up is a fucking beautiful piece of music.
Man, that V John rocks sounds great! Keep on rocking Baroness!
I just saw them today at the Download Fest, they are awesome, I was waiting so much to see them.
Gina🖤🖤🤟🏼
So effin' good I can hardly stand it. 20 years of my life attached to much of their muzik. Whatta band🖤🖤🖤
Baizley’s vibrato just gets richer through the years as evidenced by this performance. But no one is out-shadowed and everyone plays a critical part of the whole sound, expertly. Please come back to Pain in the Grass in Washington Baroness!
One of my favorite bands out there right now.. There is absolutely nothing else like these guys out there at all.. This is something special right here..
I decided to hit up a show in Charleston SC on a whim. Mind you we rarely get any good bands coming through so my expectations were low. Holy crap man! This band blew me away. I found out later they also did an acoustic set a small local music store. So cool. This is by far the best band I’ve heard of since there was good music coming out on the reg. A band this amazing is a rare find these days.
One of the best bands around. They put all their emotions into and you can feel it listening to it. Amazing musicians and performers
Bass player going to paint a house after the gig.
Also, I love this band.
Isn't he amazing? Dude is grooving wild and looks so badass 😊😂
Vocals are raw and awesome
Same for the guitars and tone damn
Extremely raw, I would say 30:12 😂
@@audioblastlab8274 lol
Straight up amazing, goosebumps. I love this band so much
Too powerful!! Love from Brazil 🇧🇷 go baroness
Breathtaking
They were the last show I saw before the pandemic... front row, with tears welling in my eyes.
so glad me and a few other musicians kept playing through your precious plandemic. fuk every musician who sat inside bc the overlords told them to. cowards
i saw them live yesterday in front row, what a great show, they all spread lots of energy, they’re really great live
You took my suggestion OMG! 😄
Perfect...beautiful....music...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
John wearing an Amen Ra shirt makes this video even better!
This is killer!
The sound is better here than on the album.
This is how all your albums should sound from now on. Forget the studios and producers... practice your new songs, set up for a concert and record it all in 1 take. This video Sounds so much better than an official studio album.
These guys never cease to amaze me
First saw Baroness live after the Blue album was released, opening for Mastodon. They have been one of my favorites ever since!
They're awesome!!!!!!! Great discover
Amazing performance. Absolutely awesome!!
Why am I only just watching this?! Stunning performance knocked completely out of the park. Finally going to be seeing them live later this year and this has got me hyped.
Not sure how I missed this! Awesome.
That's probably one of my favourite things on YT. Pure gold (or Gold and grey as it happens :D)
Thrilled to have new Baroness to watch and listen to. Not enough live videos out with Gina! Thanks for posting this.
The thing that sets baroness apart from the rest of modern metal is that baisley's an Artist first, Metal musician second.. no matter the medium, he just creates amazing, original, art! Most would be lucky to get one of those adjectives thrown their way.. on one picture, song or album, and he's done it consistently thru their entire catalog.. I try to force people to listen to them whenever possible, to spread the gospel up here in Canada 🤘

Thanks for sharing the session
I absolutely love Baroness. I never wanted a Tele in 30+ years of guitar playing until watching them kill it and those single coils sing.
Also shoutout to Seb for serving up Jose Canseco looks during the interview portions.
Smashing
Dam that performance was amazing! What a powerhouse of a band! Amazing.
Love these guys, happy to see them doing well!
Love the vibes in this video. God bless guitar music
Such a fantastic band! Nick and Sab are an amazing rhythm combo and then with John and Gina both killing it on guitar and vocals, they’re just phenomenal
The combined vocals and harmonies you two create let’s me know this is what Baron😂ss evolved to
Epic! thanks a lot for putting this together!
I have always loved Baroness, but these last two records are on a whole new level of excellence. The songwriting is perfect. Saw them live in a small venue shortly after Gold & Grey was released. It was incredible! They played Tourniquet towards the middle of the set, and it elevated the show to a whole new level of awesome! I can’t wait to hear what’s next from this crew!
Really like the songs, but for me the production makes them a difficult listen sadly
@@adampopeens2728 it ruined both albums. I love hearing the songs live but the albums are unlistenable. I still find it baffling
Being a die hard fans since Blue, it still amazes me how intense they are. Baroness goes through your ears directly to your soul
Just saw them on Tons of Rock, and it was the best show there, in my opinion better than all the other acts, and there were some huge names there too! Didn't listen much before, but they're among my favourites now, truly a remarkable band!
Never heard of them, impressive, definitely getting on my Spotify playlist.
The drummer's OD&D shirt was *chef's kiss*
Such an amazing band, next level for sure!!
Absolutely great!
I’ve listened baroness for at least 15 years, and although their sound is pretty different now, it’s one of my favorite bands ever!
Yes they soy d different 😂 30:12
John is rocking Amenra t-shirt! Another great band. Check them out if you haven't yet.
Seasons gave me goosebumps and a bump in my throat. Nearly brought to tears. So beautiful. ❤❤❤❤❤
Just heard them on Spotify and definitely going to a show.
Great energy and beautiful vibe. Thanks for this!
thats amazing!!!
Watching this, it's even more apparent that while John and Gina get most of the attention, Baz and Nick are the soul. While the guitars are great, I could listen their parts on Fugue for hours. The bass and drums MAKE that song
Fantastic!
Thank you so much for this, Baroness is too rad.
Such an incredible live band. Truly, a stellar performance
How stellar? This stellar 30:12? 😂
Awesome!
Just an amazing American band! Creative and world class musicianship! Thank You
Excellent!
