I’m a 61 year-old guitarist who has played for over 45 years. This band’s guitarist has grokked a half-century of soul and R&B, like some kind of mellow, slo-mo Hendrix. Just a pleasure to hear. Bass and drums are so solid!
The bass playing is the same man. Both of them simple but just what's required. I feel like the best musicians are the ones that can shred really fast but know their role. All 3 of these guys seem like they play with no ego, nobody wants to be the star of the show and it makes a beautiful sound.
When youre up at 3am stoned, and flipping through youtube and find this (almost 3yrs ago now)...then you go out and get the album that has these songs (and the remix album); then for your 10th wedding anniversary-its a daily soundtrack for the week long trip I took with my wife...STILL jamming it all TO.THIS.DAY. This clip has carried me through Las Vegas, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. I've walked around through local neighborhoods with it blasting out of my phone in all of them. I look forward to sharing this with Angkor Wat soon.

Oh man! This live session was always played in the car when I used to bring my mom to get her chemeos two hours away from my Hometown to Guatemala city. It helped me to focus driving. It helped me to understand the situation. It helps me to think about good things about life and her. Now that I know that momma is not going to survive, the songs come to me over and over searching my very deep sorrows. But these songs will remind me cherish moments like when I saw the band in Vancouver with my partner right before I came over to see her. Thank you for your music Khruanbin! i simply love how their voices aren't used to overshadow their other talents. it's like the vocals are an extension of their instruments meant only to complement and enhance.
Uh....they can't sing BUT do they have an incredible ear for music. Their vocals provide sustained harmonic layering. "Dearest Alfred" is a good example, and yo, it is fire.
The purity of one guitar, one bass and drums is brilliant. No BS, all 100% real music played before your eyes by humans. Awesome! I need to see this band live.
My dad has been in a ventilator for two weeks affected by the virus that rages the world. He is seriously struggling and it can go either way at this point.. This set has kept me company all through and always puts me in a better mood. Especially August Twelve, when the second half kicks in at 21:35 i feel everything will be alright no matter what happens.. The first time i heard Khruangbin was on a Late Night Tales mix. I was in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I had been there for a year, and had to move back to the US. I put on my headphones and went for one last motorcycle ride through the city, I had never ridden with headphones on before. "A Calf Born in Winter" came on, I joined the flow of constant scooter traffic and took in the beauty of that vibrant, vibrating city one last time, and I cried. It was purely coincidence that it was that song, by a band who's name means "Engine Fly" in Thai, and who were heavily influenced by Thai funk, was my soundtrack for that final ride. I'll never forget it, one of the most bittersweet moments of my life. This band is really something special.
Dustin, my final night in Thailand, I felt the same way. Of course when I took my last scooter ride, if I had heard this music, I might not have left....lol
Good to hear you had some great times in Thailand. By the way, Khruang-bin, word by word , does mean engine-fly like you mentioned. But to clarify it, it actually means airplane. Sort of like butterfly doesn't mean flying butter. PS. That is one of my favourite songs as well.

@@philesq9595 it sounds crisp and clean partly because of the arrangement being so well put together, each instrument has its space, they're probably using some very nice preamps as well as the mics for that vintage sound. The engineers done a great job mixing everything to sound so full and warm but ultimately this band is just great at playing and putting together tunes.
@@philesq9595 They've said it once before in an interview. They play very softly, which allows the engineers to really play with levels to adjust them properly. It really helps capturing dynamic range when you don't clip it at all.

I was just thinking the same thing. Not that I want to but I can't find a single fault with this band. The groove is incredible and the guitar playing is what good lead guitar playing should be. Whilst being badass playing, it is embellishing the track rather than just seeing it as a podium to stand on so everyone can see how great he is. This band really is the complete package. Also, hats off to drippy eye cos the visuals are awesome too!
I discovered this band when I was at a cannabis cafe on a secluded alley in Bangkok. The speaker was playing Two Fish and An Elephant by Khruangbin and I could have never been more happy. It was such a euphoric moment. I ended just vibing with the rest of the other smokers, high AF! LOL

For a lot of their studio recordings (which they record in a barn) they actually aspire to a lo-fi sound. They've said this in an inteview. Genius band.
This is EXACTLY what we are all starving for. Real music played by real people. The more I listen in to this band, the more and more my love grows for them.
I can't think of how many times I have watched/listened to this and their NPR Tiny Desk show in the last few years. They recently did a collaboration with Leon Bridges which I thought would be weird, but was great. Leon Bridges is also one of my favorites. If you like Khruangbin then you might want to check out Thievery Corporation and Songhoy Blues. TC has been around for ages and has an ever changing world music sound and Songhoy are another awesome band out of Mali and just straight rock.
They have such a strong love vibe, paired with deep roots in world music that add skill of drummer n guitarist that the groove of the bass need only be classical amd restrained...it is her heart and joy that is the icing. But, yes, this show gives and gives.

Fela Kuti is like the founder of Afro-beat-funk. And Majek Fashek is the Rain King. Like a mystic shaman that unfortunately moved to the US and got addicted to drugs.
Khruangbin is just like Italian food. Only a few ingredients and very simple, but they are the best and they are prepared to highlight each flavour to perfection. Delicious.

I discovered this performance while I was working as a nurse in NYC near the beginning of the pandemic 4/2020. I had it on repeat for weeks. Honestly it was very supportive to me during that time and I will always be grateful for it. Thank you Khruangbin, Drippy Eye Projections, and Pitchfork.

What is this witchery ? what is this magic? There are specific notes in each song that make my soul FEEL things I didn't know needed feeling. I would recognise them playing anywhere. So unique. so special. so grateful these artists have opened their minds and souls with us to share what is in them and making the world a better place note by note.
I just discovered this band and am blown away by how beautiful this is and by how many other people also love this. I agree, there is still hope in this world.
I would prefer a situation in which I was their sworn enemy, in my own garage-lair, laying down even deeper, cooler tracks, designed to subvert their paradigm, mock them artistically, and prey on their insecurities as a group, and individuals. Soon, they would be unable to listen to their own music, or see themselves in a mirror without breaking down into heaving sobs, rueful and hopeless in their existential failure.

A year has passed once again but this still stands tall among the greatest live performances. I'm grateful to be able to listen to this any day
The first time i heard Khruangbin was on a Late Night Tales mix. I was in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I had been there for a year, and had to move back to the US. I put on my headphones and went for one last motorcycle ride through the city, I had never ridden with headphones on before. "A Calf Born in Winter" came on, I joined the flow of constant scooter traffic and took in the beauty of that vibrant, vibrating city one last time, and I cried. It was purely coincidence that it was that song, by a band who's name means "Engine Fly" in Thai, and who were heavily influenced by Thai funk, was my soundtrack for that final ride. I'll never forget it, one of the most bittersweet moments of my life. This band is really something special.

Good to hear you had some great times in Thailand. By the way, Khruang-bin, word by word , does mean engine-fly like you mentioned. But to clarify it, it actually means airplane. Sort of like butterfly doesn't mean flying butter. PS. That is one of my favourite songs as well.

It's not something I would ever think to appreciate but it came to my mind. Do you know anything about mics and audio? How come all the uploaded live performances of them have noticeably crisp and cleaner quality of sound than other artists?

@@philesq9595 it sounds crisp and clean partly because of the arrangement being so well put together, each instrument has its space, they're probably using some very nice preamps as well as the mics for that vintage sound. The engineers done a great job mixing everything to sound so full and warm but ultimately this band is just great at playing and putting together tunes.

@@philesq9595 They've said it once before in an interview. They play very softly, which allows the engineers to really play with levels to adjust them properly. It really helps capturing dynamic range when you don't clip it at all.

I was just thinking the same thing. Not that I want to but I can't find a single fault with this band. The groove is incredible and the guitar playing is what good lead guitar playing should be. Whilst being badass playing, it is embellishing the track rather than just seeing it as a podium to stand on so everyone can see how great he is. This band really is the complete package. Also, hats off to drippy eye cos the visuals are awesome too!

This might sound odd but the guitarist's playing style reminds me of Ritchie Blackmore. Maybe it's just the natural wood-grain 70s Strat, I dunno.

I discovered this band when I was at a cannabis cafe on a secluded alley in Bangkok. The speaker was playing Two Fish and An Elephant by Khruangbin and I could have never been more happy. It was such a euphoric moment. I ended just vibing with the rest of the other smokers, high AF! LOL

For a lot of their studio recordings (which they record in a barn) they actually aspire to a lo-fi sound. They've said this in an inteview. Genius band.
This is EXACTLY what we are all starving for. Real music played by real people. The more I listen in to this band, the more and more my love grows for them.

I can't think of how many times I have watched/listened to this and their NPR Tiny Desk show in the last few years. They recently did a collaboration with Leon Bridges which I thought would be weird, but was great. Leon Bridges is also one of my favorites. If you like Khruangbin then you might want to check out Thievery Corporation and Songhoy Blues. TC has been around for ages and has an ever changing world music sound and Songhoy are another awesome band out of Mali and just straight rock.

They have such a strong love vibe, paired with deep roots in world music that add skill of drummer n guitarist that the groove of the bass need only be classical amd restrained...it is her heart and joy that is the icing.

@@incognito3862 Check out Songhoy Blues. Not quite the same but infectious world style music. Thievery Corporation are a bit similar and been around forever. Fela Kuti is like the founder of Afro-beat-funk. And Majek Fashek is the Rain King. Like a mystic shaman that unfortunately moved to the US and got addicted to drugs.
Khruangbin is just like Italian food. Only a few ingredients and very simple, but they are the best and they are prepared to highlight each flavour to perfection. Delicious.

3+ years later and this continues to be one of my favorite recorded performances ever. Everything here is just sublime; the blending, DJ's timing, the unbelievable sound engineering / mixing, and those gorgeous visuals? I can't wait to see them live.
