Jake Barraclough, aka "Ran To Japan"
⚠️ Train Harder, Not Smarter.
🇬🇧 Documenting my life ‘on the run’ in Japan!
The depth of running talent in Japan is ridiculous, so winning a race here is a monumental challenge! But the reward for doing so is eternal glory… and an all-expenses paid for trip to Singapore, which is the main reason I signed up for this race. This is my third week in a row of racing and I’ve been 1st place loser, aka. silver medalist in the last 2. So let's find out if can I finally break the curse and take my first W in Japan!🥇
Imagine running at a 2:20 marathon pace and the bloke in your group pulls out a GoPro and starts casually vlogging
They were definitely thinking ‘when will this guy stfu?!’ 😂
That was exactly what I was thinking! I don’t think I could have said a single word at that pace.
Sunday is the best day of the week thanks to Ran to Japan vlogs
Got the weekend entertainment on lockdown 🫡
And your long run, right?
You are our window into the Japanese marathon scene Jake, I believe this is your market opportunity.
That’s the niche! 👌
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite channels on TH-cam, quality content
I'm really enjoying your channel. I completed my first marathon this year at the age of 56 and loved every minute of it .Marathon running is the best fun of running 🏃♂️
Brilliant, well done buddy! You can’t complain there… end of a huge training week and you stuck it in there until the end when others dropped back 👊
Ah cheers mate! Was pretty rough out there but yeah glad I got it done 🫡
You need a sponsor big time Jake, you are working so hard to get to the top level...what a machine you are!!!! Going for...GOLD!
Thanks mate! Ay I’ll keep knocking out the miles (& vids) and hopefully one’ll come knocking soon
@@RanToJapan Mizuno UK/US ambassador 🤔
Just absolutely love the positivity, regardless of a hattrick second places! Just found your channel, but I’ll definitely be following along!
Just discovered the channel. Love the energy and Japan.
Cheers from Morocco
"Train harder, not smarter" LOL
Love it man, honestly you did great! Most importantly you're living your dream
Let’s goooo 💪
Best positive vibe channel tbh mate. That’s why you are recognized!
I am loving these vlogs/running vid hybrids. And the captions at the bottom of the videos are so good aswell
Cheers, glad you’re enjoying em! 🙌
日本語で失礼します。
楽しそうに、しかも速く走れるのは凄いです!
コメントくれてありがとうございます!日本人も見ているなんてすごいですね🎌
You are my new Ben Parkes!! How on earth you run with a GoPro at those speeds and talk is insane! Love the videos and please keep them coming.
Incredible how fast you are running and talking as well big respect😊
Ur doing great with the channel so far my guy the editings great etc, just keep the style up you have going and youll explode! In views not off of runnin 🤣
Well I did blow up at the end of this marathon tbf 😂 Thanks mate, the TH-cam train keeps rolling!
I can see that one hurt...we really got a sense of the pain at the end. Well done Jake... The fact that it's a marathon as part of a 250km week is a joke.
Hang on there and don't put yourself under pressure for Fukuoka. If you're not right there's no point killing yourself! 🙏🏼
A good taper (yeah, that’ll be the hardest bit) leading into Fukuoka and you’ll be all good to smash it. 💪🏼
First registered speedaphile and now train harder, not smarter. Love your brand 🤣
Wow, you were in my neck of the woods, shame I missed my chance to see you run!
Yeah, Shizuoka is famous for green tea, best tea in Japan.
You got a bunch of the good stuff by the looks of it.
Hope you go one better next time! Being home the gold!
Was a cool place to visit! I’m not much of a tea man but I’ll give it a try, maybe this new tea set can convert me! Cheers bud, I’ll be back for revenge soon 💪
Love the content. Amazing running!
bro is him. 3 marathons in 3週間はすごい
Only 2 full marathon, 1 little half doesn’t really count! 笑
Thanks for sharing your adventures in Japan! ❤
This is my “here since the early days” card…awesome video btw.
I’ve started training for my first marathon and really love these videos! I’m a performance coach from the uk. I’ve helped multiple Olympic athletes strive towards their goals. I’d love to help you resolve your calf issues.
Thanks for the comment mate! That sounds awesome, it’s always been a constant battle with my calf so if you could help out that would be legendary! Could you shoot me a message on Instagram @rantojapan and we can chat more?
I am so jealous of all this tasty food you eat for the carbo fuel up. I ran a half marathon in Greece yesterday and in the race I really thought about you around 17-18km of your videos and what would you do at this point by the way I was wearing this hachimaki bandana and everyone thought I was japanese. Great video by the way
What you did was amazing, not only 3 marathons in three weeks but three times podium
Also, would love to see some ultras, although it seems to be you daily training jajajaja
There’s defo some ultras on the cards in the future 📈 (you’re right, basically won’t have to change my training at all!)
Love your videos man
You are amazing not only in running but also in video.
See you again at the Fukuoka International Marathon!
ありがとうございます!一緒に走って楽しかったです!杉山さんもTH-camチャンネルあるね、すごい!Subscribeしたんです👍
@ thank you 😊
I had a MASSIVE calf problem for years, one thing that helped me was cycling between two big chunk af shoes. Swapped one out for the other every day.
Great channel. Would be interesting if you vlogged your training runs around some other parks like Showa Kinen and Nogawa Park. Interested to see what those are like for training runs.
Just out of convenience I usually run locally (to avoid getting the train) but if I ever mix it up with a different park I’ll be sure to film!
Love you Jake (i'm a 40 yo noob) and your videos. Subscribed since your first video.
Thank you for coming to Japan😆😆😆
It is amazing how you can do so much marathon run!
RFA Japan singlet looking real dope 🔥
Well done mate. Congratulations on 2nd.
すごーーーーい!!!おめでとう。
super fun to watch!! too bad for singapore lol
Love the vids keep it up
Ultra arc is going to be crazy
At least there’s a hat trick 😂😂😂
Your time will come, I am sure
Another banger🔥.You never miss man. I want to try out high mileage. How did you get your mileage so high without injuries?
Cheers mate! Just built it up gradually and tbf kept pushing through any aches and pains until my body adapted and the high volume felt normal!
What you are doing is super inspiring, keep it up!
On a side note, do you hit the gym for strenghtening and injury prevention, or what is your secret?
I do a home S&C routine (I’ll show some of it in the next vid) but actually only started that recently. Sounds so basic but the secret is just sleep, fuelling and staying consistent with the mileage so you can gradually build it up and ya body adapts 🦾
Big inspiration jake
About to crank 24 miles this morning, but this video comes first
That’s not what I’m preaching… mileage over everything, get out there! 💪
Man Sunday long run looking laughable in comparison to your Sunday marathon 😭😂 Congrats, 2nd place is amazing, Japan is full of amazing runners!
saving the first w for fukuoka 🤝🏼
I better get in 2:07 shape then!
Mate i raced a 7 miler today at exact the same pace and was absolutely wrote off 😂 madness that you do that for a whole marathon, and its not even close to your all out effort
Shizuoka is famous for tea 😊
your editing is really good, how did you learn so fast?
Cheers, this channel used to be my old music one so had plenty of practice before making vids
you're amazing i like your channel
Nice race man! Back to back marathons looks rough (not to mention recording mid-race). Just curious, what camera do you typically vlog with/record when racing?
Yeah little knackered still! Insta360 go3 for the running vlog parts, GoPro for everything else
well done bro
Have you looked into specifically strengthening the soleus (bent-knee calf raises) and tibialis (tib bar)? Speaking of international audience, cheers from Austria!🇦🇹 ☺
Yeah I’ve been smashing those classics for a while! They’ll be periods where my calf feels great then out of nowhere it always seem to flare up 🙄 Ayyy appreciate the support!
@@RanToJapanHope you find a solution! You got it dude, appreciate your vids! 🏃🍙🍱🍜🍚🍣🍠🍢🍘☕🍪☺
beast mode
great video and well done!
what camera are you using to film your race?
Insta360 go3 - very handy!
probably need to work in some faster 800m workout reps to help with that kick or properly taper for races
had the same calf issues forever increased cadence to 190 and not had any issues since
Interesting, I’ve not heard anyone really talk about that before. Thanks I’ll look into it!
Love your videos. I started running this year. How long do you think it took you to build up to 50 miles per week plus?
Thanks, I’ve been running since I was a young so it was probably a few years at least, like mid teens maybe
Any tips for blisters after longer runs? Or preventive methods.
Just ran my first HM at 1:50~ such an incredible feeling. Definetly keeping at it
Good job! Size up your shoes… I’ve gone up a couple sizes since getting into running seriously and it made all the difference (plus wearing decent sports socks). Aim for at least a thumb’s width between your big toe and the end of the shoe to allow that room for when your feet expand on the run!
Crazy that your completely buggered and gassed from a marathon yet you still get out for a double after a race 😂
Ah the easy mileage is never a problem, it’s the speed work that kills me! 😂
I'm planning on increasing my mileage from 60K/w to 150K/w. I plan on doing doubles and keeping the intensity pretty low. So threshold workouts on the easier side and skipping the VO2Max workouts as in my opinion it's all about load management + strength training and not some fixed mileage you're able to run without hurting yourself. The 20K/w jogger isn't injured because he increased the mileage too fast.
How did you build up to your 250K/w? There are all these made-up rules like the 10%, or having a rest week every 4 weeks. How do you feel about these?
I ignored all the conventional ideas and basically starting from nothing (had 8 months off for a surgery), I just added on 10km/wk and built it up continuously from there. I decided to just push thru every ache or pain til my body eventually adapted to the high mileage! (which I’m not gonna recommend 😂). At the start I kept it very easy, not worrying about sessions and just got the easy mileage in. And yeah I did lots of injury prevention S&C. Good luck with the increase, just build it very gradually! 💪
just letting you know the heat adn humidity in Singapore is no joke.
Yhh I’d wanna go for a holiday, not for the running!
causally getting 2nd place in a marathon while vlogging and narrating your own dehydration 🤦♂️
I'm obviously not a sub 2:30 runner, but you do need a taper before a marathon (well, if you want peak performance). And the only losers are the people who chicken out of a race.
Can I ask why you chose Fukuoka as your A-goal race? Not criticism, just curiosity.
Yeah of course if I was aiming for peak performance I’d do a proper taper! Was hoping I could get away with it for this one with it being an easier effort but ended up being very tough! Fukuoka is one of the most famous races here with lots of quick runners and a fast course 👌
Post more!
New vid every Sunday - the editing takes up half the week!
Im not sure if you know this already but with your marathon time I think you will have a much better chance of becoming a sponsored athlete in China rather than Japan. Because its a rapidly growing running community. Much like the difference in economy between the two countries. Plus its a short flight from Tokyo to Eastern Chinese cities.
But I’d have to rebrand my whole channel - Ran To China 😂 I’d love to visit there but with all the pollution it just doesn’t looks like the best place to live for running! Plus, the Japanese culture and running scene is just unbeatable 🔥
@ yeah I get what you mean but the idea of air pollution comes from 10+years ago. As an economy we r past the heavy development stage. It’s much better now and it’s only in the northern part for about a month or two of the year. If you go southwest(yunnan/guizhou) you get much better air quality, altitude and low living costs as well. Don’t know much about the visa though might be tricky.
Legend! 10k in 34 mins chatting away to the go pro whilst the locals look around in amazement / bemusement haha
❤
nice one..
lol your 10k time is my 5k time. its absolute bonkers i cant imagine doing double my speed.
and not to mention that was your marathon pace, mine was just purely 5k lol
Discount sushi before a race?!? That’s bold bud but if it works, it works.
I avoided the fish ahah it was just an egg & tofu sushi set to play it safe!
I avoided the fish ahah it was just an egg & tofu sushi set to play it safe!
slay queeeeen
"I'm not known for my speed", runs a sub 2:30 marathon.
Bruh..
Very different to having natural speed over shorter distances… reckon half my viewers would beat me over a 400m 😂
Watching a guy start casually vlogging in your VO2 Max pace... :(
