    My understanding is that your HR will have been low because your body isn’t repaired enough to push itself harder; it’s sort of like a self defence mechanism. Your body knows it’s cooked, so basically withdraws your ability to push really hard (I think that’s drastically oversimplifying it but the point still stands 😂 it’s the reason that when people “hit the wall” in the marathon at like mile 20 their HR drops alongside the pace, the body just can’t withstand it anymore
    Still a really strong run with your recent mileage being said, but guide yourself a chance to recover where you can bud!

      Yep same like cycling, when I didnt have enough sleep / rest my heart rate stuck around 140-150 even though my leg feel fresh but my core is shutting down so cruising 30k/h is feeling like effort for 40k/h
      After 2 day full rest, my heart able to push max again around 180 and able to chasing the breakaway.

    Love Ekidens. I live in France and they are held pretty regularly, and there is a french championship, the format is 6 runners doing 5, 10, 5, 10, 5, 7.195 km = marathon
    I think I've run one every year for the last 25 years. It's a great thing for getting a team spirit up within a club. In one Ekiden we had 5 teams from our club and spent a long time on the calculations to try and get 5 teams that would finish in the same total time, then we had great fun cheering everybody on !

  • @Martin_Edmondson
    @Martin_Edmondson หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Looks like a great experience entering an Ekiden. You are fortunate for the opportunity (even if their rules are terrible!)
    For the documents, you should have faxed a hand-written hanko-ed copy with a special stamp which you can only buy a specific place (in cash!) to the required place, taking care not to write the number 7 'incorrectly'. With a copy of your grandparent's birth certificates, translated by a registered translator. A copy of your tax returns or for the last 3 years, a police background check report, and photocopy of both sides of your MyNumber card.
    Gotta love Japanese bureaucracy.

    Very cool experience! A common issue with people who have started running hard during the super shoe era is they are not ready for the mental burnout after marathons/half marathons. Physical fatigue used to force breaks but now it’s more of a mental call. Best of luck and hopefully you truly recover mentally for your next big race!

    Insane not to take a break. Recovering is when the body repairs and gets stronger. Exercising every day builds up a lot of damage. In cycling, almost every riders takes Monday off. Runners need even more time off because of the extra stress. Heading for long term injury.

    When they say the university doesnt allow foreigners on the team, what do they mean by that. Would any of these be allowed on the team?:
    - Ethnically Korean born in Japan with a Korean passport. Speaks japanese fluently and has only ever lived in japan.
    - British born person who has naturalised as a japanese citzen. Genetically "British" but is Japanese national?
    What does it take to not be a foreigner?

    • @RanToJapan
      @RanToJapan  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It’s a complicated one! This wasn’t an official rule, just a stance that my uni took so I’m not sure how they would view those scenarios. But in terms of official ekiden races, only Japanese born citizens can compete on the non-foreigner leg of the race

    • @maxxrenn
      @maxxrenn 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@RanToJapan Well as I understand it (based on some random youtube video i saw about this a while back, so whatever that is worth) in Japan it is illegal to discriminate between a Japanese born citizen and a naturalised citizen. So in theory they have to allow you to enter if you naturalise as Japanese.
      (A friend of mine from Ukraine naturalized recently and his only passport is a Japanese one now!)

    • @RanToJapan
      @RanToJapan  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ ah ok, that could be right. I was pretty sure some Kenyan runners have become naturalised citizens though and yet they still can’t compete for Japan. I need to do some more research into this, it’s an interesting topic for sure

      @maxxrenn 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@RanToJapan Well not allowing a Japanese citizen to compete because of their genetics would be controversial to say the least. I mean you can imagine a Japanese born Japanese citizen with 100% ethnically Kenyan parents.... if they barred him from competing based on genetics.... 😬

    Hey Jake, short time viewer here who's binged your videos just chiming in to let you know you're absolutely killing it and really happy that you got rid of the certified paedophile title (it was kind of offputting). Just a thought for you, get yourself treated to a massage/dry cupping it might be what your legs need right now for recovery.

      I’ve got no problem with the rules here… it’s a Japanese event so of course it should be mostly Japanese runners competing! That’s what the general public wanna see so having the 1 ‘foreigner leg’ is fair enough imo
