Honourable mention to tyler hoechlin, he really brought superman back down to earth. He was so full of hope and I know it sounds cheesy, but he just "felt" like superman
Thanks so much for the incredible effort you put into this video! The way you broke down the evolution of Superman through promotional materials and trailers was fascinating and truly insightful. That said, I feel like the 2006 Superman Returns was given a bit of a disservice in your analysis. It's hard to fully appreciate the context of that film without acknowledging the profound impact 9/11 had on our collective culture. The USA was grappling with a sense of vulnerability and loss that deeply influenced the way we consumed all forms of art and stories. Of course the Superman of 2006 wasn't the bright, confident hero of the prior eras. Instead, there was a clear attempt to reconcile the ideal of Superman with a world that had experienced the trauma of 9/11. I am 40. I was 17 on 9/11 and 22 in 2006 when the film came out. I say that so you know I am not speculating, but rather lived through it as a young/developing adult with younger siblings. I know what we were feeling and talking about. There is a reason the comic The Boys also came out in 2006 with a very different message and perspective on Super Heros, which I feel is interconnected. As an audience, we were more ready for The Homelander as a character than we were for more Superman. I don't think you can truly speak about 2006 Superman while ignoring the then recent post 9/11 world and the 2nd term Bush War on Terror era USA.
That was more reason to make Superman as optimistic as possible, not downbeat and dull. Iron Man came out two years later- a fun, fizzy character in an equally fun film which also acknowledged recent history. It’s nonsense to suggest that an attack that took place five years earlier cast that long a shadow- it didn’t- in terms of pop culture.
@@polyestermammoth740 - I don't know if you didn't live through it, but you are completely wrong with your assessment. To start with, the promotional images talked about in this videp are from 2003 less that two full years after 9/11, not 5+ when the film came out. That detail matters. Even your example completely misses how the themes of Ironman would never have been made as a film without 9/11. Ironman was a part of the military industrial complex while getting caught up in a watered down verson of the movie Lord of War. I don't what film you think you saw, but you should go back and rewatch it. Have you also missed the fact that Marvel Studios went with the hero characyer who was NOT a Super Hero, but a real flawed person who was smart, resourceful, got caught in the mix and was made a victim who had to get out of a mess he got himself into - a parallel to the USA - and so forth. Your example backs up my point far more than it makes yours. Ironman was a movie we were ready for as we were coming to the end of the 2nd Bush Administration. I suggest ypu go back and actually investigate the post-9/11 media in detail. PS. I especially like how you gloss over how correct my example of The Boys is and how they addressed such matters in the first issue that exact same year of 2006. Try again.
@@PaulGaither Indeed. MCU Tony Stark got deep and dirty with the MIC and the terrorists and note how almost nothing in his Mark One Battle Escape was played for laughs.
More than ever, we need that unwavering sense of kindness, hope & compassion, that feeling that even with all the darkness, someone will do the right thing, just because it’s right. We need a hero who stands for the best in all of us-uncompromising in his ideals, always ready with a helping hand, & never losing faith in what we can achieve together. Singer's Superman was about being an outsider. They're almost embarrassed by the look of Superman. Muting the red colors, minimizing the logo. Zach Snyder never understood Superman. For him the appeal was his raw strength and mythological status. He too muted the colors and focused on the world fearing him. But for fans, Superman is the symbol who lifts us up, inspires us, & never gives up on humanity. His clothes are bright. For he brings light to the darkest corners, sets the standard for goodness, & reminds us that there’s something worth striving for: hope, love, kindness, & the unshakable belief that we can be better. We don't want another hero. We don't need another dark brooding character. We need more than a hero. We need a super hero. We need a Super man.
That’s a lot of words to convince yourself that if any superhero with even one of Superman’s litany of powers actually showed up, that you would TOTALLY act like Lois and the other people in 1978 and not like any of the mob in a “Man of Steel” who can be counted on flapping their gums and notify the government… when they are *grateful* to have their children saved.
I really do enjoy how you describe the difference between each superman and each of them portray what superman is. For me, I like when superman is just superman. I enjoy the interpretation of superman like characters but when it comes to the boy in blue I much rather prefer him just being himself.
George Reeves was not in either of the Superman serials, Kirk was the star of both. George appeared in the first theatrical film, 'Superman and the MoleMen', then reprised his role in the tv series, 'The Adventures of Superman'.
A great video, the analysis of each movie and promotional material was really interesting. I love the different takes that each director has done on the character. Really great in depth video, I learned a lot. Can’t wait for the new movie!!
Enjoyed thst alot thank you. Also liked how you said 'this guy' rather than using its name when talking about the guy who did a poor Luthor in Returns. That was a good touch.
Thank you for the attention paid to Superman Returns. The trailer for it is still amazing. The film is flawed, but it wasn’t lazy. I’m still very fond of it despite its shortcomings.
I was born in 79. As a kid I didn't get magazines or stuff that would promote movies that were in production and would often miss news articles on them. Often enough seeing a trailer at the cinema or on tv was the first time I knew anything about a movie was coming out.....I sometimes miss that because you would no next to nothing about the movie until you watched it. And sometimes you completely missed any promotional material and completely missed the movie 😂😂
This! We need to appreciate each and every iteration of Superman and not nit pick for the sake of it. Each one brought something different to the table and I'm glad we got and will continue to get a different Superman take👍🏻
you just changed my though entirely about superman. to be honest i always like the darker superheroes like henry but you made me realize that every version was made for each purpose. thanks
I liked your optimism to explain 4 superman s and I get we go from less action hope full family friendly Reeves , routh to Cavill's mythology, more intense action (dragon ball z) epicness to reverting back at start hopeful less intense action kids friendly like Reeves. Very nice man good study like it 👍 I am happy that someone is explaining very nicely
It's nice that there are more than me who gets each Superman. You left out two, though. One whose voice was done by Tim Daly (but George Neuborn succeeded him in "Justice League/Justice League Unlimited", and George MacDonald did a good job in a two-part "Batman Beyond") and one one in "Justice League Action", who didn't have much screen time, but he was enjoyable enough when he did. Most of my life, I just appreciated him for being the inspiration for the term "superhero". Not to mention "superpowers" and the later character, Supergirl, who seems cheap but was an upgrade when it came to going incognito.
Henry was phenomenal and the story was absolutely about Clark trying to find his place in the world. He faced trial by fire and even had to witness death and tragedy. There is a Superman i can relate to. Superman The Movie is kind of a cartoon that has bright colors and a lot of humor but it only winks at adults. Returns was barely about it's lead character, Superman. It seemed more to be about Lois having to deal with his return. MOS was a movie that was, basically, for the older fans hungry for a more nuanced and adult telling of the story. We see Zack sending Clark on a heroes journey to become Superman rather than a quick trip to the fortress where his space dad teaches him science and then he's immediately out saving cats from trees. Chris looked perfect in the costume and i can give it that. I can also give it the Margot, at least in this first installment, was not played for laughs. Everyone else was, though.
Look, I CAN buy a Superman who can act like Chris Reeve’s version, but I can buy the People acting like in those movies way less. Look at the Perry Whites. 1978 movie version has him casually doing nigh-blasphemous remarks “THIS’LL BE THE GREATEST INTERVIEW SECOND ONLY TO WHEN GOD SPOKE TO MOSES!” and whereas the 2013 version has him Inadvertently agree with Pa Kent whom ofc he never would meet that “The world isn’t ready”.
Great video, love the devling into and really examining. Now for my internet comment, obviously this guy has not worn boots once in his entire life, at no point is that how you take boots off. Your hands would never grip like that to take boots off.
Funny how you mentioned King Arthur in regards to Man of Steel Superman. Zack Snyders favorite movie was Exclalibur, which had influenced everything he has worked on. If you watch that movie. You know how Zack Snyders head works.
This was my idea too. I watched all the trailers for the movies to see whether the trailers set up a particular kind of movie and which was the best movie based on the trailer I think guns was the best.
When they first released the Man of Steal still I thought it was telling that they hid the lack of briefs. People were wondering if he was going to wear them or not and how it would look, so I think they hid that on purpose.
I feel like they always get the superman, the greatest interpretation of superman to me and Luthor's greatest interpretation as well was in the superman animated series. Tim Daly and Clancy Brown nailed those roles perfectly. His most memorable quote being I feel like I live in a world made of cardboard. Even the way he walked was like he tiptoed or like he floated slowly on the surface afraid that if he stepped too hard the ground beneath him would crumble. I hope James Gunn's approach try to mimmick this. I'm tired of the usual suspects being his villains, give us someone like Mongol who's near his physical match or Brainiac or maybe superman versus the Elite that would be cool to watch if it's an already established world...
I heard that this new fuperman still changes into his "outfit" in a phone boot, but now it takes him an hour, you know so he be more relatable and totally not freak out kids passing by seeing him in his ......
I think the most annoying thing about the progression of Superman over the years is the constant efforts to make the suit darker and dingier (not counting the real dirt). It will be nice if the new movie is aiming to return to the original comic look for the most part.
08:06 For me, anyone who criticizes Superman Returns with phrases like "HE'S NOT SUPERMAN" or something like that, simply didn't understand anything about the film and must think X-Men is a more honorable film from the director by doing everything different from the comics. 08:45 Man of Steel for me is a UNIQUE film, so it was a big mistake to make a universe around it.
Superman is like James Bond. Every Generation has their own superman. Chris Reeve will be always my superman. Henry Cavill is in the age like If I could play superman and Dave Corenswet is again a different generation.
12:17 I never liked Cavill’s portrayal of Superman. It was always dark, gloomy, and depressing-like, “Oh, I’m so sad.” He definitely looked the part with the physique and appearance of Superman, but he didn’t work as Clark Kent, though that might have been due to the script. I’m hopeful the new Superman will bring back the fun and optimism, showing that Superman doesn’t have to be dark and gloomy for people to connect with him.
WB specifically asked Nolan and Snyder for a darker more serious superman following nolans success with his batman movies with Christian Bale. Cavill did say Man of Steel 2 would have had a lighter tone though.
i’ve been saying all this time….MoS was snyder’s version of “Atlas Shrugged” (he’s an ayn rand fan), and Justice League was him directing the Watchmen again. the guy NEVER UNDERSTOOD Superman or the DC universe in general. and he sucks as a storyteller. 300 and the Watchmen were good BECAUSE material already existed. AND that those two movies perfectly fit his proclivities.
personally, im not a fan of the new suit, it looks like a thick and ill fitting rubber suit. I am curious though how good the movie is going to be. The teaser trailer did not convince me.
Superman didn’t become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he’s Superman. …His outfit with the big red S, that’s the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes.
@@personperson573People won’t be honest DC and Warner Bros has been milking Batman too much and think every character needs to be dark and tragic like him.
I’d love to watch this, but my rule is, if there’s an error within the first 20 seconds, I don’t watch. Kirk Alyn was in theatrical serials, George Reeves was on TV. And Superman and the Mole Men doesn’t count because it was a feature, not a serial. But at least you get this engagement, so you’re still a winner for taking the time and effort to make what I’m sure is a thoughtful and informative video. I just can’t watch it because that’s my rule.
This was hugely insightful, I really appreciate all of the work you put into this. Well done. 😊 I agree entirely about Krypto, and I am very much looking forward to seeing him on-screen. James Gunn took the Guardians of the Galaxy and turned them into a worldwide phenomenon. A bunch of C-listers that nobody had ever heard of, outside of comics diehards. Just imagine what's possible with the most recognizable superhero in the world.
Why do Snyder fans always jump in with their opinion of a film that hasn't been released yet? 🤣🤣🤣. If you like the chracter then tou should be rooting for it to succeed. But of it just a Snyder thing then..... Anyway I think if that is all you guys got out of this then please watch it again.
What some people I guess think is "fun" Superman, to me is just silly tacky cringe Superman. Red briefs and the almost dorkish adherence to a look that might pass in an older era, because people can't grow up is ridiculous. Look, I hope the new movie is good (I'm trying to go in with an open mind) but the trunks on the outside and the little dog with a CAPE? Yeah, it's VERY silly. But it's in the comics right?
1ST SUPES- FUN ,HEARTWARMING & OH YEAH -FUN!! RETURNS - FORGETTABLE,BORING CRAP!! MAN OF STEEL- DARK ,ASTOUNDINGLY GREAT F/X STORY MORE IN DEPTH ALMOST AS FUN AS THE 1ST,LOOKS SILLY,WAAAAY 2 MANY CHRACTERS BUT IM BETTING STILL NOT ENOUGH ACTION MAY CAPTURE SOME OF THE MAGIC OF THE 1ST-MAYBE!!😅😮😀😁
You're going to great lengths to elevate Man of Steel than what it turned out to be - a relentless slog with 0 understanding of the Superman character.

I hope James Gunn's approach try to mimmick this. I'm tired of the usual suspects being his villains, give us someone like Mongol who's near his physical match or Brainiac or maybe superman versus the Elite that would be cool to watch if it's an already established world...
Interesting perspective.
I heard that this new fuperman still changes into his "outfit" in a phone boot, but now it takes him an hour, you know so he be more relatable and totally not freak out kids passing by seeing him in his ......
The Adventures of Superman with George Reeves was a TV series, not a movie serial.
Interesting how the 70's flying sequence at 00:15 is much more realistic-looking than the 21st century clips that follow it
Man of Steel is fun.
Love your channel but come on!
@@GummiSosa yes but this is considering non revisionist history and what people thought for a decade it's still there 😅
Nobody removes his boots like that.
My one issue with this, is he had more negative things to say about my 2nd favorite Superman. MOS
4:33 ❤
Yeah a Superman that’s gonna throw a punch. He’s referring to what we get from the image.
Superman is like James Bond. Every Generation has their own superman. Chris Reeve will be always my superman. Henry Cavill is in the age like If I could play superman and Dave Corenswet is again a different generation.
I hope the dog doesn't die.
The dogs basically near invincible lol but valid concern I guess
They'll turn him into "Krypto-currency".
They already did screen testing....it's not looking good.
But I think there's still time to try and do some changes.
WB specifically asked Nolan and Snyder for a darker more serious superman following nolans success with his batman movies with Christian Bale. Cavill did say Man of Steel 2 would have had a lighter tone though.
I’d like to see this for other characters. Batman next?
i’ve been saying all this time….MoS was snyder’s version of “Atlas Shrugged” (he’s an ayn rand fan), and Justice League was him directing the Watchmen again.
the guy NEVER UNDERSTOOD Superman or the DC universe in general.
and he sucks as a storyteller.
300 and the Watchmen were good BECAUSE material already existed. AND that those two movies perfectly fit his proclivities.
TOM WELLING!!!!!!!!! 😅😂😂😂 the G.O.A.T 💯
Fuperman??
FUPERMAN
Christopher Reeve Is The One And Only Superman!
While he's in the armchair, pulling his shit boots, humanity is dying out twice!!!!
This was an awesome breakdown of the vision of each writer, director and the aspect in which they decided to focus on. I enjoyed this a lot
personally, im not a fan of the new suit, it looks like a thick and ill fitting rubber suit. I am curious though how good the movie is going to be. The teaser trailer did not convince me.
Kevin Spacey is just This guy huh😂
cavill was ridiculous bald
Superman didn’t become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he’s Superman. …His outfit with the big red S, that’s the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes.
No, he was born a Kryptonian. He was made the Superman by two loving parents on a farm in Kansas.
Bill spoke facts
nah man, Bill didnt understand Superman at all
"This guy"?
Superman has always been cool. Anyone that thinks otherwise isn’t cool themselves.
Agree but for a while in the mid to late 2010s and early 2020s it was a popular opinion for some reason amongst normies 😅😅
@@personperson573People won’t be honest DC and Warner Bros has been milking Batman too much and think every character needs to be dark and tragic like him.
Question guys
Is there a Superman transformers?
Blackslashma!
Christhoper reeve the best superman ever
Fuperman 😂
We Don't Need Versions of Superman!!!!!
Interesting but I think you are over thinking the character of Superman.
The 70’s were cynical? If only they knew how much worse cynicism would get in terms of today’s world
This guy xD xD xD
What some people I guess think is "fun" Superman, to me is just silly tacky cringe Superman. Red briefs and the almost dorkish adherence to a look that might pass in an older era, because people can't grow up is ridiculous. Look, I hope the new movie is good (I'm trying to go in with an open mind) but the trunks on the outside and the little dog with a CAPE? Yeah, it's VERY silly. But it's in the comics right?
new movie will not work. Wrong actor. an WB Sux.
You read all sorts of weird shit into things. Mostly a lot of bullshit.
Lol! Ok
420th like
I can't wait to see it flop 😂
Why the hell isn’t the image of Henry Cavill accurate?!? He DOES throw a punch in that scene. Did you even see the movie?!?
You didn't pay attention to the video huh? 😅😅
