Totally true about straight razor shaving. The learning curve is precipitous but after a few attempts it is very satisfying to stand in a steamy bathroom with a glass of Knob Creek Kentucky Bourbon and a shaving mug and brush. Here is a tip: unless you are a just post-pubescent young man learning to shave what amount to little more than the soft down of a ripe peach (I.e., if you’re not 12 yo) shave with your normal razor first, then use the straightedge. The stubble your 4-blade disposable leaves behind is more than enough for you to learn to remove. And you will need stiptic to staunch the inevitable nicks. It’s easy to find in the pet store for people who trim their dog’s nails too short. Love the video. ToT, finest kind.
Keep your blades (yes, even disposables) immersed in mineral oil (the kind from a pharmacy) to make them last much, much longer (like 5x or more). They dull because they oxidize, not because your Superman beard hair can dull steel. Congrats Tony!
I began doing that a few years ago. Really helps. Also got me to stop using shaving cream, turns out when your blades are lubricated really well, all you need is a little soap and water after shaving.
Voodoo is not when you stick the tail on the neck of an Ox, or when you go about doing crazy stuff with someone's hand. Voodoo is when you watch all your favourite TH-camrs comment on one of the best machinist TH-camr channel. Love the collab, love your videos Tony, and love this 500K celebration. Congratulations.
I’m glad to see some love for the straight razor. I’m not much for shaving in general, but when I do, I can’t stand doing it with anything but a straight razor. It just makes my skin feel so much better and I get less irritation from regrowth or skin drying out. If anyone out there has never tried it, I highly recommend you take Tony’s advice and find an old timey barber - that’s how I was introduced. My barber while I was stationed in the UK did back of the neck, sideburns, etc. with one, and I never looked back.
Bellissimo Tony, bel video e congratulazioni per il risultato: te lo meriti. I cameo degli altri youtuber sono fantastici e mi immagino il ghigno di Adam mentre recitava...un grande!
Never figured on the shaving part, I've been into straight razors for a while, but restored an old safety razor for the time pressured days too. Keep up the great work, I've learnt so much about what I want to do when I get a bigger shed.
Saw the notification yesterday night, paused the video until today's morning coffee... was well worth the wait! Also, satisfying to see that 95,3% of your plug-in TH-cam channels happen to be in my subscription (thanks for getting Alex French guy there as well!) Keep up the good work, all the others can keep up the bad ones...
I'm jealous, I didn't even think about the "LAYOUT FLUID," which unfortunately only comes in RED. But then again, I'm 65 yr's old, and have shaved only 5 (five) times in my life. Never could embrace the daily self sacrifice every morning, 5 (five) times was more than enough.
Congrats. This old tony. Just wanted to tell you that your channel is awesome. Between the way you teach and a tad bit of your comedy, you make learning a lot easier. Thanks.
I resolved my own analog vs. digital caliper debate while driving to the store at 2am to find an obscure replacement battery so I could finish my project. Congrats on the 500K subs!
LR44 is literally the most common button cell out there. If you need it working in a pinch, you can even "recharge" them with a normal battery charger and some tinfoil.
I decided at 17, after going on a field trip to a local tradeschool to be a machinist. The tipping point was an aluminum light bulb. I remember thinking, "I want to learn how to make that." I love your videos and still find myself rewatching old videos years later. Thank you for the amazing content.
Good to spend the extra cash for a heavier, better handle, IMO. Especially if you tend to shake or twitch. Feather blades are the best. Also, if you get razor bumps the disposables with 5+ blades in them seem to make it worse, just one good pass with safety razor is better.
Nice to be an early, mid- to low-5-digit subscriber. Not to brag or anything, but I’ve been subscribed long enough to remember the drill press video, the shop press build video, and to know to ask “How’s that surface gauge build coming along?”
Man, I was trying to find those videos and other than the Capco caper they are all gone! Edit: He deleted the first subscriber special where he did the face reveal too! I knew he was a secret agent
I know I watched all of the videos up to the surface grinder videos (I was rebuilding one at the same time), imagine my shame when weeks later I found out that Tony was not only dropping knowledge but redefining the game. Needless to say, I subscribed a bit late but I was there from early on, +This Old Tony, I owe you an apology for being noncommittal initially. We'll be here long past the surface gage build, I'm sure (unless of course if that invokes a time paradox).
@@mikedrop4421 I don't think he did delete it, you can see tony's beautiful hairy phizog in the video titled "Stress, Strain & DIY Tool Holder" - the 100k special!
How have I NEVER KNOWN about PARALLEL PLIERS!!!! 😮😫 Now.... Off to buy some parallel pliers... +1 for straight razors and safety razors for backup! Love the video.
I'm with Tony, they're one of my favorite tools - but mine have a V groove longitudinally down one jaw, which for me is partly what makes the tool so useful. The Knipex option is sweet but intended for a very different situation - crudely speaking, it's more crescent wrench than plier, an extension of your arm rather than of your hand.
TOT, brother you are as hilarious as you are informative and entertaining . Almost pastout from laughing especially with the voodoo cameo appearances. Congratulations on 500,000 subs. Keep up the great work. Will be eagerly awaiting the next video. Got to go buy more tools now. Can never have too many.
I love these videos, definately one of the best creators on TH-cam at the moment. You dont even need to like machining or metal work to enjoy a T.O.T. video. Congratulations on 500K.
Would you attack AvE unprovoked? Not I. He strikes me as the guy who would know the most painful way to hurt you, build a machine to automate it and then know how to destroy the evidence all while speaking to you in Canadian French. Terrifying.
Every time you make a video I say to myself "Whow this was the best one you ever , no way he can do better than this " And then you make this one , Hats off to you TOD. 👍 THIS WAS THE BEST!!! Now you raised the too high even for you. 😁
I agree on #5. The feather blades are a great value, providing good price and great performance. Some of the vintage safety razors use a twist knob to flap open the top, but they seem to gunk up frequently. The style that unscrews into three pieces (like the one you show) is definitely my favorite. You have to shave slowly and gently to avoid looking like you attempted suicide, but...it's only ten cents a shave. When it's the beard season, I only shave my neck once a week. That means its a heavy scruff to remove, and the safety razor easily does a mow job that would clog a two-blade disposable.
Last year I became an apprentice Fitter and Turner and I have you partially to thank for it, Tony! I love your channel. Thank you for showing me how amazing this trade is.
I've been watching your videos for some time now. I use the exact same disposable razorblades and a pretty similar razor. You using those 'tools' too is like my Dad saying that I did something right. Wow that sounded weird. Well. Keep up the good work Tony. - The son you didn't know you had
Same here! I use the exact same "Feather" Safety Razor Blades. After trying probably over a dozen other razors including much more expensive German made. The system takes a little practice to get good with but well, well worth the effort to learn. The trick I find is to never apply pressure.
Congrats! My modernist take on the Optivisor (8:34), is Clic eye glasses, although their most powerful mag is not as high as optivisors go. They are quite a bit more convenient and a wee bit more discreet
Woah, woah, woah. Did we totally leave AvE out of this because of his shiny new CNC machine? The nerve of you guys! Congratulations on 500,000 subs, Tony! You've made these videos extremely entertaining over the years.
Congrats to 500k. And yes I also shave with a Shavette (Haven't jumped the gun to a proper straight razor ... need to practice) and bought a Safety razor when I was unhappy with the Results of a Mach 3. The Feathers and Astra blades are the best I own. Feathers for special ocasions and Astra for everyday shave. And yes - I shaved my face off when I first used a feather on my safety razor.
Big thanks to the cameos who help make TOT's videos an unexpected belly laugh. P.S., can anyone send me the address of Abom79's restaurant? I hear the food is killer but the wait staff can be a bit gruff. My milling machine is a registered emotional support device thank you very much.
Frank, if you check these comments, Here's 2 for you. Retired Toolmaker, apprenticed in '67 still tinkering with mini shop in my condo basement. I understand the sentiment with the verniers, but now I find the easiest measuring is with the digital calipers. The 4" is more handy than the 6", and they go for $9.99 on sale at (china) Harbor Freight. I have several laying around my shop.. Also if you can find one, the Gladwin indicator is the easiest, fastest way to find the center of a hole, as it reads on both sides as you spin it. They don't make them anymore, but they still pop up on the internet occasionally. Worth their weight in gold.
Congratulations on 500K. I always enjoy your videos and they remain entertaining on multiple viewings - the details like Aboms face in the spoon is greatly appreciated :D

Caffienated Chaos yeah I wish I could invest/gamble on TH-cam subscriber stock. I would be rich. Been here for a long time. Seen a lot of growth. All good on this channel.
That’s what happens Tony !!! When you produce this quality of videos. Great work man you deserve it
Tony, you have helped rekindle an interest in making things I've had my whole life with your content. I've been here since about 40k and let's just say you've influenced where I've taken my life past high school.
Keep it up - you're awesome.
"where's your safety tie now Colin?" 😂😂😂
Just found this channel a day ago and im loving it so far. I look forward to future content.
Don't cheat yourself out of yesteryears content. it rocks :-)
Agreed - be sure to go back through all the prior videos. You won't be disappointed.
I love Adam's cameo's
I always get a smile when I hear/see him in TOTs videos. Really wish these guys would collab on a machining project.
I feel like they are the Batman/Joker of the Machinists-YouTouber. Completely different but exactly the same.
i've got enough desiccant, ok
7:37 Cant imagine Abom ever complaining about a mill being somewhere...
"Hey why is there a mill in this operating room. Abom- noice!"
Public service announcement #1: do not handle a razor blade like this (19:06)
Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
I too was a bit scared seeing him holding that razor like that.
Clearly ToT’s skin is as impenetrable as his mythical stubble.
Its okay to handle them that way, just don't sneeze.
That is the robotic hand that runs liquid nitrogen as we saw in the water cooler video.
Calluses! That's part of being a manly man who uses real razors!
So, you can shave and get your daily supply of layout fluid at the same time? Brilliant!
Clickspring
Just watched that Clickspring video.
META!
@@stanwooddave9758 Are you in a ZZ Top Cover Band?
Congratulations TOT. The humor is a great lead in, the content superb, and the viewership, well bud, deserved. Again, congratulations
i just keep coming here because of your nails.
i love your videos!
subbed in about 400 and here you are years later still knocking them outa the park go Tony
@Mr. Morningstar If I can't throw AAs at it or plug it in, I pass.
LR44 is literally the most common button cell out there. If you need it working in a pinch, you can even "recharge" them with a normal battery charger and some tinfoil.
Big congratulation!
Youre worth watching every minute, and from time to time i even learn things!
Ulrik Kaul 👀
You're a very strange person. I admire that
Naaaa..he is Italian..and strange like DeVinci
@@jaxxbrat2634 What? He's Italian? Any source?
What is it they say, birds of a feather........ ! 😊
I decided at 17, after going on a field trip to a local tradeschool to be a machinist. The tipping point was an aluminum light bulb. I remember thinking, "I want to learn how to make that." I love your videos and still find myself rewatching old videos years later. Thank you for the amazing content.
That is brilliant! The references to Colin Furze and all the others is great. How I missed finding it until now I have no idea.
Congratulations Tony! I am so happy you do not have a Skully Voodoo doll, I make enough mistakes already.
Maybe he wore it out already and the replacement was not finished in time for the video ^.^
I also love those safety razors! I get a perfect shave and the blades just cost 10cents a piece vs 3,3€ for Gillette.
Good to spend the extra cash for a heavier, better handle, IMO. Especially if you tend to shake or twitch. Feather blades are the best. Also, if you get razor bumps the disposables with 5+ blades in them seem to make it worse, just one good pass with safety razor is better.
Gillette can go pound sand. ToT is no soyboy!!!
Nice to be an early, mid- to low-5-digit subscriber. Not to brag or anything, but I’ve been subscribed long enough to remember the drill press video, the shop press build video, and to know to ask “How’s that surface gauge build coming along?”
where have they gone to by the way? Loved the drill press video :(
Man, I was trying to find those videos and other than the Capco caper they are all gone!
@@jojoposter Yeah I wanted to actually go back and watch it carefully for hints on fixing MY cheap drill press and it's gone :-(
@@mikedrop4421 I don't think he did delete it, you can see tony's beautiful hairy phizog in the video titled "Stress, Strain & DIY Tool Holder" - the 100k special!
I love the way when you tell a crap joke you cut the end short. Genius!
my fav. tube! Thanx tony! I love your humor! and I learned a lot from you! Thanx from Germany!
Well done Tony!! We all love your content
How have I NEVER KNOWN about PARALLEL PLIERS!!!! 😮😫 Now.... Off to buy some parallel pliers...
+1 for straight razors and safety razors for backup! Love the video.
Lookup the Knipex Pliers Wrench. Expensive but worth it.
I'm off to make some - bigger is better!
Congratulations Tony, It's a funny pleasure to watch your channel and learn useful things. Keep doing this, it is working. Greeting from Bulgaria!
I love these videos, definately one of the best creators on TH-cam at the moment. You dont even need to like machining or metal work to enjoy a T.O.T. video. Congratulations on 500K.
no Ave doll ?
You don't try to fuck with a force of nature.
Would you attack AvE unprovoked? Not I. He strikes me as the guy who would know the most painful way to hurt you, build a machine to automate it and then know how to destroy the evidence all while speaking to you in Canadian French. Terrifying.
I think AvE sent a cease and desist.
What face would you use?
@@capnskiddies a blue haired Canadian? His logo
Thank you for your videos, you managed to pass me the machining bug. Now I'm trying to find it and kill it but no luck so far. Keep it coming Tony.
Every time you make a video I say to myself "Whow this was the best one you ever , no way he can do better than this "
And then you make this one , Hats off to you TOD. 👍
THIS WAS THE BEST!!!
Congrats on 500,000 even though this channel should have 1,000,000!
Watch your tongue, 1 million is way lower than it *SHOULD* be.
10 million I say!
Yeah..but we specialisties
I've been watching your videos for some time now. I use the exact same disposable razorblades and a pretty similar razor. You using those 'tools' too is like my Dad saying that I did something right. Wow that sounded weird. Well. Keep up the good work Tony.
- The son you didn't know you had
Same here! I use the exact same "Feather" Safety Razor Blades.
After trying probably over a dozen other razors including much more expensive German made.
The system takes a little practice to get good with but well, well worth the effort to learn. The trick I find is to never apply pressure.
well deserved and long overdue! Finally my campaigning for you is paying off... XD. But after this video, no more sponsorships from Dollar Sha'...
Well deserved! You're videos are fantastically well put together. Who's the face in the spoon?!
Congrats! My modernist take on the Optivisor (8:34), is Clic eye glasses, although their most powerful mag is not as high as optivisors go. They are quite a bit more convenient and a wee bit more discreet
Matthias Wandel: whoa!
for the parallel jaw pliers... have you looked into Knipex pliers wrench? They come in a large variety of sizes, and are also parallel.
YES. I hate crescent wrenches so much. The pliers wrench is SO much better, and won't mess up facets like channel locks.
Woah, woah, woah. Did we totally leave AvE out of this because of his shiny new CNC machine? The nerve of you guys!
Congratulations on 500,000 subs, Tony! You've made these videos extremely entertaining over the years.
Congrats. Really giggled when you showed your optivisor as I had to raise mine to look up at the screen. Great videos. Great craftsmanship. Thank you.
*deal with that mr. hands channel* i've bursted with laugh. Love your videos This Old Tony !!
I saw you were at 499,999 so I figured I would finally subscribe. Congrats!
so it was you!
Watching this on the 10th December 2019, congratulations on the 700,000. Ask your friend for two more copies of the photograph.
"Quantum leaps to the 4th dimension" Lmao! Just think how many nuts, bolts, and screws are living in THAT place!
not to mention the springs
Ooh i forgot about that place
i'm pretty sure the spring and a few nylon pieces of my tape decks are just out there floating around
Plus they keep the socks lost in the dryer company
I'm fairly certain that's where every E-clip I've ever touched currently resides...
@@Ian_Wallace. Hahaha! Yep! The only E-clips I've ever seen, were either already installed, or new in the package. Take one off and......POOF! Gone for good.
Your top comments are oddly similar to my Subscribe list. Get out of my head Tony. Also, congratulations on 500k... and sweet visor bro (I have the same)
Congratulations TOT, huge thanks for your content that has both made me laugh and taught me so much. Also for introducing me to a number of great youtube channels like Clickspring and Alex FGC. Here's to another 500k (and hopefully an actual bottle of champagne)! : )
Dear Tony. I already did learn so much from you! The quality of your videos is such that you already deserve 1 M subscribers. Impatient as always to see your next video.
