i do believe land rover does magic things, transform owners to mecanics, mecanics to alcoholics, alcoholics to land rover engineers ... the circle never ends
I replaced the shaft on mine at 100,000 miles and 17 years because of all the stories of how they wear. The old one that came out was honestly like new. Could still see the machining marks on the splines. In my case at least, there was no need to worry.
@BritannicaRestorations just from my own observations, there seem to be many cars that suffer no issues, or at least not until very high mileage and some that suffer repeated failures at fairly low mileages. That leads me to think the shaft itself may not be the problem. It could be something to do with the tolerances on the machining of the faces on the gearbox/transfer box/the connector housing bit. If some of those are not spot on, it would misalign those splines slightly and cause them to wear much quicker.
Land Rover, recycling old defects, never! No way I'd buy one of their newer vehicles to go through a different level of pain. At least we know the strengths & weaknesses of the old ones & how to fix them!
got to around 75,000 kms in my 2012 90 before a catastrophic failure of the shaft! Installed a 2 piece Ashcroft unit as the LOF were not available then, 2017 I think it was. I hear the LOF ones are the best and that there is a second version now
Installed the lof one last week. I noticed there is a mistake in the instructions for the torque settings of the 2 bolts..... first bolt has a lower torque than the second (long through bolt), so if you slacken the second bolt it first loosens the first bolt inside the output shaft.... tell me how I know 😢 contacted LOF and there is a typo in the instructions
Sheared all the splines off my output shaft coupling, fortunately it was on my street as I went up the hill to the main road. Replaced it with a LOF single piece shaft, plus swapped LT230 for ashcrofts exchange one. It was like driving a different car entirely, much better power delivery, backlash gone. Such a daft/lazy design to couple MT82 to a LT230 with that 2 piece shaft.

Lol!

You seem to be an exception - so many have failed early

Yeap!

Yep! I only recommend the LOF solid shaft. They are the best and the newer one is even better!

John - thanks for the update - I have never fitted one

Yeap - what were these designers thinking (or drinking)
I'm glad I've got a Disco1if it's stronger than that Puma.
