  • Do you think a klong or clunking noise on a Land Rover Defender Puma 2.2 or 2.4 TDCi is normal? The answer is no! In this video, we share with you how we got rid of this issue by replacing the MT82 output shaft kit. And, today, we upgraded it a second time with the new LOF Clutches EXTREMspec MT82 output shaft kit. The Klong or clunking noise when changing gears is often because of the poor design of the stock output shaft. This is how to fix the clunk sound on your Land Rover Defender Puma. Enjoy!

    Excellent video, many thanks.
    Defender 110 2015 output shaft failure at 32k miles, replaced with the LOF extreme spec one piece shaft. Disgusting the way Land Rover have designed and engineered this critical component. The old shaft was bone dry, worn and incorrectly installed, no ring in the groove provided, unless it had failed and disintegrated. Land Rover should do a recall for this issue.
    once again thanks for informed video.

    This was certainly one of your BEST videos. It is a universal issue for Defender drivers and us having to learn to change gears differently to avoid the shaft noise. I have the Puma 2.4 and it hurts me every time I hear this thump! Land Rover engineers should certainly have put some increased effort to solve this problem, very surprising! I am busy replacing a worn oil seal on my transfer assembly which is leaking and considering the Ashcroft replacement part. Excellent video - subscribed! Just to share some knowledge...Ashcroft recently sent me their latest design (red) part free of charge even though I bought their kit way back in 2016. Have to say the LOF design does look like a step up design wise. That said, the Ashcroft uses oil for lubricant which is always going win over grease.

      Thanks a lot! Happy to count you as a new subscriber :) You were lucky with Ashcroft, we also contacted them about the leak and they also offered to replace part of it with their latest design but... not free of charge ;) But as we weren't too sure if this upgrade would really fix any leaking issue on the long term (even though we were very happy with the part because no clunking noise since it was put in place in 2016), we went for LOF part with a different design.

      Merci du soutien! Et contente que cela vous soit utile. Oui que ce soit avec la pièce Ashcroft ou la pièce LOF ces deux règlent complètement le problème. Par contre comme expliqué dans la vidéo, je ne peux pas me prononcer quant à la 3ème version de la pièce Ashcroft qui règle probablement le problème de fuite que nous avions eu avec la version 2, mais sans certitude. Il faudrait demander aux possesseurs de cette 3ème version. Dans le doute nous avons préféré nous orienter vers la pièce LOF, car elle est d'un seul bloc et la conception nous semble plus simple et plus efficace. En dehors du prix de la pièce, il faut bien compter une bonne journée de main d’œuvre dans un garage qui a la connaissance de ce genre de véhicules sinon peut être un peu plus long je dirai même. C'est un assez gros boulot si on fait l'embrayage en même temps. Mais du fait de devoir tout déposer autant tout remplacer en une fois ça vaut la peine.

      @@marcosavio1020 I've been building LR's for a few years now (10+), been modding vehicles on a engineering and electrical basis for 30 years. LR have a tolerance and to be honest, mechanically there is no real possibility of them being totally in line, there is no alignment features either so the whole point in the circlipped spline is to allow slight movement. For info, the ashcroft attempt fails on the twin O-rings because it isn't directly in line, the vehicle here had that and it was leaking. Now bolt a solid extension to something slightly out of line and what happens? I'm aware that I'm party to a few more bits of info about LOF products and their working or not but I cannot publicise that info as it might prejudice a court case.

    Ultimately it’s a bad design. You have a shaft without enough lubrication. There’s a reason Land Rover had to cross drill the input gear on the transfer box, before they did that, the shaft wore out. Ford just recreated the same problem.

    • @marcosavio1020
      @marcosavio1020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you know if Land Rover ever publicly addressed this as a recommended action or service inspection to prevent failure. It is certainly a bad design all the worse for Land Rover being quiet about the noise in the market place.

    • @Rob-cz7lg
      @Rob-cz7lg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marcosavio1020 if you mean the input gear being cross drilled then yes, that’s why all replacement parts are cross drilled. If you mean the this MT82 adapter shaft, then no, I don’t think so, probably because by the time the fault became apparent, I expect Ford had by then sold Land Rover on, or they may have already stopped production all together.
      Unfortunately there’s no easy solution, a the splines of the shaft need a better supply of oil to stop them wearing. That’s how I see it anyway.
      That’s why the splines in the drive flanges wear, there not supplied with oil.
      That’s why output splines on the early LT77 gearbox wear, the input gear in the transfer box wasn’t drilled, and didn’t have a supply of oil.
      I expect this will just have to be treated as a service item, and just change it when you put in a new clutch.

    Good video but strange you would release this at a time when the product is out of stock...

      Thanks! We received ours few weeks ago but with the restrictions couldn't go to our mechanic to install it before so I don't really understand your point here :)

      she’s not a dealer.
      She’s just telling us what she did. How could she know what they have in stock by now or not!!

      @@pm-s3654 because it's a paid promotion in partnership with the company that makes them ie. She's not promoting this product for free, she's getting paid for it.
      It's like apple promoting a new product exactly at the point when they have no phones available. The whole point of influencer marketing is to promote a product to drive traffic to the site to sell the product, so the fact that the product is actually available is important.

      Can't agree with that, when we bought ours it didn't make any clunks and when it started we found the problem and solved it.
